Throughout February the Guarani-Jopara
Institute for Missionaries hosted an
intensive Guarani class for three students.
xxxx and xxxxx xxxxxxx are missionaries
with the International Mission Board of the
Southern Baptist Church. They work in
southern Paraguay. They spent a year in
Costa Rica learning Spanish. Then they
came to Paraguay and began studying
Guarani. Once they have reached a certain
proficiency in that, theyll study another
language, called Mby-Guarani.
The other student was Christie Hagerman.
She and her husband Kenwork in a town
called Carapegu, about 40 minutes from us.
Their primary ministry is to youth. Before
they came to Paraguay they didnt realize
that they needed anything but Spanish to
minister in rural Paraguay. But when they
got to Carapegu, they realized that all of
their neighbors spoke Guarani and that to
relate with them on a personal level, they
were going to need to learn it too.
The xxxxxx and Christie are highly
motivated language learners. They had
already learned a lot of Guarani either
completely on their own or with limited help
from others. They were really enthusiastic
about the opportunity to study the language

On March seventh, just one day after Lucass sixth birthday, we received the latest addition to
our quiver, Joseph Rafael. For those who yearn for the details, he weighed 7 lbs. 9 oz. and was
19 long.
He is named for two people who are very important to us: Joe Henderson is a professor at
Biola University and has been my (Andys) friend since high school. Rafael Flores is Lizets
father and a good and godly man. Both of these men have been a significant influence for goodin our lives and we pray that baby Joe will grow up to be the kind of consecrated servant of God
and others that each of them is in his own way.
Like Lucas and Timothy, Joe was born at the Baptist Medical Center in Asuncin. We went a
couple of weeks before his due date and stayed with our dear friends Tom and Kelly Stout,
SIM missionaries. We were grateful for their kind hospitality and also that Lizets Mom, Daly
Flores, was able to come from Bolivia to be with us during that time. She looked after Lucas
and Timothy and was just generally a help and support.
While doa Daly was with us, Twana, Lizets youngest sister, back in Bolivia, had some
medical tests and it was discovered that she had thyroid problems. Lizets mom did some quick
investigation and found out that she could get much betterand much less
expensivetreatment in Paraguay. Because doa Daly was here in Paraguay, Twana was able
to come and get the treatment done here and then return to Bolivia with her mom. We were
very thankful for the way God worked all of that out!
Were in the process of getting Joe all the
documentation that he needsboth
Paraguayan and U.S.! Its quite a process,
but the Paraguayan aspecthis national
identity card called a cdulahas become
much more streamlined and automated.
Now hes four months old and God has
given him good health and a cheerful
disposition. Lucas and Timothy love him
and are (usually) gentle and affectionate with
him. Thank you for praying for our family!
Welcome

(...contd from p. 1) more formally and figure
out what was going on with the grammar.
We held class for six hours a day, five days a
week, for three and a half weeks. It was tiring
for all of us, but really yielded results in
terms of their language learning. It was a
delight to be able to teach them!
Christies husband, Ken, had open-heart
surgery in January and their vehicle has been
in the shop for a couple of months. So a
f r i e n d
brought her
to class on a
motorcycle.
We prayed
f o r h e r
constantly as
she traveled
t h e f o r t y
minute trip
each day.
The last day
of the third
w e e k , a s
they were
turning off
the highway into our road, a man in a
speeding Land Cruiser tried to pass them.
The car swiped the motorbike and Christie
was thrown to the ground. She broke her left
femur right by the knee and had to have
surgery to implant a plate and several screws.
The whole process was extremely painful
and unpleasant, of course, and she is stilldealing with pain. Please pray for Christie
and Ken as they both continue to recover.
We know that you pray for our health, too.
During the month of May, Lizet had two
episodes of serious abdominal pain. We got
it checked out and discovered she had
gallstones.
The ultrasound showed she also had stones
in her bile duct. Removing these would
require a difficult procedure with an
endoscope (ERCP). We prayed that before
we returned to Asuncin for the operation,
God would remove those stones from her
bile duct.
We re turn ed ea rl y in Jun e for he r
cholecystectomy, or gallbladder removal.
Another ultrasound showed there were no
longer stones in the bile ducta clear and
specific answer to prayer! The operation
went well and we thank the Lord for a quickand thorough recovery. God also provided
us with kind friends to look after the boys
during the time we were both in the hospital.
We loved having a group from Kentucky
Mountain Bible College at the end of
December and the beginning of January.
These six energetic students helped us hold
our first ever VBS in Huguai. They also
partnered with us to construct a house for a
local disabled man named Mariano. Fo
years, this elderly man had been cared for
by his sister Asuncin, our neighbor. Bu
because of health issues compounded by
her age, she just wasnt able to care for him
any longer.
With the help of the KMBC Task Force, wewere able to build Mariano a room with an
attached bathroom, right behind the house
of his niece, Dominga, who is better able to
take care of him. This family are
believersDominga was one of the firs
believers in the areaand they are deeply
grateful for the great difference this has
already brought in the life of Mariano
Because Dominga and her husband
Filemn, can help each other to care fo
him, his quality of life has greatly improved
This has been a great testimony to the
community.
In our last letter I asked you to pray for ou
ministry account, which had dipped a bi
since our return last August. Thank you fo
praying, and thank you for your generosity
Weve been gratefully noticing steady
faithful giving, and our account is staying
stable.
Please pray for us especially this year as we
take on the role of acting Field Directorduring the absence of Larry and Sharon
Carr. We need wisdom and energy!
With love,
Lucas TimothyJoseph
