THE BOURNE BUZZ September 2019 Thoughts from the President: “Do Something Today” Today will never come again, so do something special. Be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone. Take Time to care. Let your words heal, not wound. Be kind, be gentle, give love. I hope you all have had a wonderful summer enjoying family and friends! As I sit writing this the weather has changed (maybe just for today) it is beautiful in the 70,s with a wonderful breeze. First I would like to thank Donna Pascarella who hosted a wonderful gathering in August for all her hospitality crew! I think we had at least 35 folks meet at the library for lovely desserts and cool drinks! Her husband Mike was right there helping out! We all spoke about the value of this committee - as you walk into a room not knowing anyone, all of a sudden someone is by your side welcoming, offering for you to sit with them and telling you all about BNN. Kudos Donna and her committee! I can’t believe we are heading into our fourth season of every other month evening events! Our program committee has been very hard at work to present exciting meetings! Our first one is on Sept 10 at the Pocasset Golf Club. Paty Robidoux our Volunteer chair has been hard at work and will be presenting our charity. The two Vannas (Gerri and Paty) will be working the room with the 50/50 raffle! Starting in October, every other month, we will be having daytime meetings, called our lunch and learn programs. BOURNE NEWCOMERS & NEIGHBORS CLUB www.bournenewcomers.org

Thoughts from the President: “Do Something Today” Today will never come again, so do something special.

We all spoke about the value of this committee - as you walk into a room not knowing anyone, all of a sudden someone is by your side welcoming, offeringfor you to sit with them and telling you all about BNN. Kudos Donna and her committee!

September's Special Interest Activity – Spotlight on MariaFitzpatrick – Mushroom Picking

Maria learned to love mushrooms as a child growing up in Sicily. Every Sunday in springtime she woke up to the aroma of mushrooms and garlic being prepared for breakfast by her father. He delighted in going out early on his only day of work to forage for mushrooms, then cooking themto eat at their freshest.

Morel Mushrooms

Maria has never lost her passion for the fungi. Foraging classes have educated her in theidentification of edible and nonedible varieties."Mushrooms are huge!" says Maria on the subject of their popularity here on the Cape. People come from allover looking for their favorites. Cape Cod National Seashore has foragers into December .

Walkers find mushrooms everywhere. In Pocasset, BNN member Elizabeth Ferris calls Maria when the Hen of theWoods appear in her yard. Morels, which look a bit like small pinecones and considered a delicacy, are common in our area. Maria finds the very popular Bolete in October; it's cap resembles a portobello, but are in the Porcini family.

Boletes

Maria's love of mushrooms isn't shared by everyone. She acknowledges that many of us are reluctant to try commonedibles found right around us. "It's like a fairytale, " she explains about the most colorful ones. "If they're prety, they're not good," she laughs.

For additional information see the Cape Cod MycologicalSociety - Facebook page They offer walks on mushroom foraging and classes on how to cultivate mushrooms.

Member Profile: Linda and Ed Fletcher

BNN members are surprising people. Meet the Fletchers, Linda and Ed. It may surprise you to know that one of them appearedon the cover of a popular Massachusets magazine. The other could easily be a cover girl. What's not surprising is that both have accomplishments of far more importance.

Linda, "Peanut", and Ed, "Nev", met each other as teenagers inMarshfield. After high school, Ed served in Viet Nam (Air Force}. The two of them eventually setled into careers as Postmaster and Registered Nurse, centering their livesaround their three children, and now nine grandkids. They are in their 55th year of marriage!

Everywhere they've lived, they were advocates for change. Ed, one of 10children, five boys and five girls, learned early how to stake and hold his position. Neither Ed nor Linda subscribe to the warning: You can't fight City Hall. Here in Bourne, Ed and Linda have worked tirelessly with a handful of others to bring the popular new sport Pickleball to our community. When the Fletchers lived in The Villages, FL, Linda saw a compelling need for her training and experience as a RegisteredNurse. The organization she started - Healthy, Wealthy and Wise -

now has more than 500 members. They meet to hear speakers on health issues, finances, activism, taxes and even sports.

Linda's work as Traveling Nurse led to assignments all over Florida and Leesburg, VA. where she would augment the medical staf during peak tourist season. Prior to nursing Linda owned and operated Carriage Shop Stables in Falmouth. There she taught EnglishHunt Seat Equitation and jumping. Almost every weekend, spring through fall, a bevy ofstudents on ponies and horses traveled the Massachusets and New England circuits. Many became Massachusets, New England, and National Champions.

Ed is no slouch either! A 32 year veteran of the US Postal Service, he served as Postmaster for 20 years in North Falmouth. Ed is a gifted athlete in all sports. In high school Ed played football, basketball, and ran track. He was an All State Baseball player. As a youngster Ed caddied at the Marshfield CC (his family's home was on the third greenof the course!). It wasn't until he turned 50 that he got serious about the sport. Ed won the Massachusets State Amateur Championship at Concord CC in 1995, becoming the oldest (age 53) to win that title. He has won ten Massachusets state titles, two New England titles, and one National title. He was MA Senior Player of the Year five years in a

BOURNE NEWCOMERS & NEIGHBORS CLUB www.bournenewcomers.org

row. He qualified five times for the US Senior Amateur and twice qualified for the BritishSr Open Amateur. Sports Illustrated, Oct 2, 1995 featured Ed in the "Faces in the Crowd". Massachusets Golfer had Ed on the cover. He holds the course record, 65, at Quashnet Valley Golf Course. In December, 2003 both Golfweek and Golf Digest ranked Ed seventh in the country as a senior golfer. Giving back Ed now umpires high school fast pitch girls softball as well as many summer leagues and in the fall Ed referees high school girls volleyball.

Book club, Chinese mah-jong, cards, pickleball - the Fletchers have entered into BNN activities with the same energy they bring to all that they do. Linda just finished a two-year term on our board as Communications Chair: She deserves credit for getng BNN'sFacebook page lookin' sharp! Ed deserves the club's sincere gratitude, as well, for all hisbehind-the-scenes support.

August Highlights:

Open House hosted by Bourne's Recycling Commission was a real eye-opener-fascinating from an engineering perspective and a wake-up call to the necessity of preserving this valuable town asset--one of the states last remaining "dumps".
