Joshua 10 Lectio Divina Verses 1 - 6

Event 1 ~ Five Kings Attack Gibeon, Israel Called To Defend The Gibeonites ~

1 Now it came to pass,

 when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai,  and had utterly destroyed it;  as he had done to Jericho and her king,  so he had done to Ai and her king;  and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel,  and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities,

and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 Wherefore Adonizedek king of Jerusalem

sent unto Hoham king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachish, and unto Debir king of Eglon, saying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may smite Gibeon:

for it hath made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amorites,

the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war against it.

6 And the men of Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to Gilgal, saying,

Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.

Joshua 10 Lectio Divina Verses 7 - 14

Event 2 ~ The LORD Enters The War Against The Five Kings’ Armies ~

7 So Joshua ascended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the LORD (Jehovah) said unto Joshua,

Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 Joshua therefore came unto them suddenly,

and went up from Gilgal all night. 10 And the LORD (Jehovah) discomfited them before Israel,

and slew them with a great slaughter at Gibeon, and chased them along the way that goeth up to Bethhoron, and smote them to Azekah, and unto Makkedah.

11And it came to pass,

as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD (Jehovah) cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword.

12 Then spake Joshua to the LORD (Jehovah) in the day when the LORD (Jehovah)

delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the sun stood still,

and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

14 And there was no day like that before it or after it,

that the LORD (Jehovah) hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD (Jehovah) fought for Israel.

Joshua 10 Lectio Divina Verses 15 - 19

15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But these five kings fled,

and hid themselves in a cave at Makkedah. 17 And it was told Joshua, saying,

The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. 18 And Joshua said,

Roll great stones upon the mouth of the cave, and set men by it for to keep them:

19 And stay ye not,

but pursue after your enemies, and smite the hindmost of them; suffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

Event 3 ~ Joshua Repeats The LORD’S Command; The Five King’s Are Slain ~

20 And it came to pass,

when Joshua and the children of Israel had made an end of slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed, that the rest which remained of them entered into fenced cities.

21 And all the people returned to the camp

to Joshua at Makkedah in peace: none moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel.

22 Then said Joshua,

Open the mouth of the cave, and bring out those five kings unto me out of the cave.

23 And they did so,

and brought forth those five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pass,

when they brought out those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the captains of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Joshua said unto them,

Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

Joshua 10 Lectio Divina Verses 26 - 27 26 And afterward Joshua smote them,

and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pass at the time of the going down of the sun,

that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and cast them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great stones in the cave’s mouth, which remain until this very day.

Event 4 ~ The LORD God of Israel Wars, ~

28 And that day Joshua took Makkedah, and smote it with the edge of the sword,

and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 Then Joshua passed from Makkedah,

and all Israel with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 And the LORD (Jehovah) delivered it also,

and the king thereof, into the hand of Israel; and he smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein; he let none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 And Joshua passed from Libnah,

and all Israel with him, unto Lachish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:

32 And the LORD (Jehovah) delivered Lachish

into the hand of Israel, which took it on the second day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of Gezer

came up to help Lachish; and Joshua smote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

Biblical Observations The Book of Joshua has been referenced by the Hebrew as ‘The Wars of the LORD’. Herein, Joshua 10, we have a Biblical visual of Exodus 15: 3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name As Joshua is about to begin his military engagement against Jericho, ‘Jesus Christ’, ‘God’s Prince, appears to Joshua, sword in Hand, declaring He is the captain of the host (armies) of ‘GOD’ - Joshua 5: 13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship Three men have been named ‘ a man of war’ in the Bible: Joshua 17:1 There was also a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead: because he was a man of war 1Sam 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse (David) the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. 1Sam 17:33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine (Goliath) to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. The entire Hebrew army backs away in fear from confronting Goliath in battle. David declares one Biblical Truth that ensures ‘God’s soldiers will be victorious, 1Samuel 17: 47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands. 48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet (Goliath) the Philistine. And king David reveals in Psalm 144 how he attained his military prowess, A Psalm of David - 1 Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: 2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

Biblical Observations

Event 2: The LORD Enters The War Against The Five Kings’ Armies. And the LORD (Jehovah) said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. Verse 10: And the LORD (Jehovah) discomfited them (the armies of the 5 kings) before Israel, Using the Hebrew etymology of discomfited means made an uproar, to agitate, to broke and substituting the meaning into verse 10 tells us what our LORD did to the 5 kings armies - And the LORD (Jehovah) made an uproar, agitated, broke them (the armies of the 5 kings) before Israel, The consequence Israel slew them with a great slaughter, and chased them, and smote them… ~~~~~ Our LORD used the force of His Creation, hailstones, to destroy the fleeing soldiers of the 5 kings armies, Verse 11: And it came to pass, as they fled from before Israel, and were in the going down to Bethhoron, that the LORD (Jehovah) cast down great stones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hailstones than they whom the children of Israel slew with the sword. More enemy soldiers were killed with ‘God’s hailstones than those slain by His Hebrew soldiers. ~~~~~ Our ‘LORD manifested His Omnipotence against Pharaoh and the Egyptian peoples with hailstones, Exodus 9: 22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven, that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man, and upon beast, and upon every herb of the field, throughout the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, s uch as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast. What weapons of war has ‘God’ provided you?

Biblical Observations Our ‘Father God’ unveils to Job, hundreds of years past a future event to this day that His weapon of hailstones will immediately precede ‘Jesus Christ’s 2nd Advent Job 38: 22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, 23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? The Seventh Vial, Revelation 16: 1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. 18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great. Hailstones weighing a talent from 116 lbs. to the talent of the king which is 158 lbs…. there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: For those who have ‘ears to hear’, this 7th Vial is followed by one of the most misused Scriptures of today’s Christians, 1 Thess. 4: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. And 1 Corinthians 15; 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. The last trumpet, the 7th, signals the execution of the 7th Vial… great hail out of heaven, our ‘Lord’s return, Revelation 19: 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Biblical Observations The LORD God of Israel, Jehovah Adonai of Israel enables Joshua and his mighty men of valor to continue warring against the 5 kings armies verses 12-14. Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel. ‘God’l, ‘Elohim’ in His Omnipotence created one entire day for the Hebrew soldier, men of war, to engage ‘God’s enemies in battle. We have to recollect the 1st verse in the Bible, ‘Elohim’s Creation, our beginning, Gen. 1:1

In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heaven and the earth.

And as His children look to forward to our destiny ‘the day of God’, eternally in our ‘Father’s Glorious Presence, Rev. 21:1

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth:

for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

For the meanwhile our daily thought after calling upon ‘Jehovah Adonai’ should be Romans 8:31

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

In Depth Review Question: Joshua Chapter 10

Event 1 ~ Five Kings Attack Gibeon, Israel Called To Defend The Gibeonites ~

Five kings of five cities deploy their armies against the peoples of Gibeon who have a peace pact with Israel. Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua utterly destroyed… Jericho and her king, Ai and her king;… That they (the five kings) feared greatly,… …the kings of the Amorites.. Amorite is a general description of all the inhabitants of Canaan. Why would these five kings seek to destroy another Canaanite city, instead of simply seeking to engage Israel militarily?

Event 2 ~ The LORD Enters the War Against the Five Kings’ Armies ~

Verse 8 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear them not: for I have delivered them into thine hand; there shall not a man of them stand before thee. Question: How may we use Lectio Divina to understand how the LORD Spoke to Joshua? How does our LORD Speak to you? And how do you speak to ‘God’?

Review Question: Joshua Chapter 10

Event 3 ~ Joshua Repeats The LORD’S Command; The Five King’s Are Slain ~

Our LORD in command of Israel’s Army, the mighty men of valor, have now defeated 5 Canaanite kings and their armies…slaying them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed. In retreat, in fear,, some of the Canaanite soldiers pulled back in haste from the battle and returned to their cities. Joshua is set to kill their 5 kings who have hid themselves in a cave and have been trapped there in by the Israelite soldiers. Joshua has gathered his soldiers together, the men of war, calls forth their captains and speaks the command that our LORD Spoke to him - 25 And Joshua said unto them, Fear not, nor be dismayed, be strong and of good courage: for thus shall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight. This ‘God’ Given Command was given to Joshua individually in Joshua chapter 1 and now he repeats it to the entire Hebrew army. It has been spoken twice, and now for the third time for those among us who stand for ‘God our Father’, soldiers of His King-dom.

‘God’ Commands: Joshua 1: 9: Have not I commanded thee (you) ? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: Be strong. - chazaq (Khaw’ zak). A primitive root meaning to behave thyself valiantly; to encourage, strengthen thyself; to become mighty, prevail. Be of good courage- amats (aw-mats’). A primitive root meaning to be alert physically (on foot) and/or mentally (in courage). One who is steadfastly minded, self strengthened. Be not afraid - arats (aw-rats’). To not dread, hence to not be harassed, to not be terribly shaken, not to be terrified. [ removing the not gives the Hebrew meaning of afraid ] neither be thou dismayed - chathath (khaw-thath’). neither breakdown by violence or by confusion or by fear events that are taking place in the world. ‘Knowing God’s Divine Providence rules Question: How can we relate this verse in Joshua with the verse from Ephesians 6:12? As soldiers in ‘Christ’ how do we defeat ‘God’s enemies, spiritual & human?

Review Question: Joshua Chapter 10

It is written… our LORD Spoke to Joshua, and He Speaks to each of us, where we begin -

‘God’ Commands: Joshua 1:8: This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. book of the law is the Pentateuch, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. meditate meaning talk to your-self prosperous to deal wisely. success to occupy, to seize by driving out the occupants. Individual, personal, success may be thought of within three simple parameters, your hearth, your vocation, and your spiritual life - which is more important, more enduring? Question: how do we nurture our spiritual success?
