HISTORICAL SITES IN ISTANBUL

HIPPODROME (Sultanahmet, Old town)The Hippodrome was a circus that was the sporting and social centre of capital of the Byzantine Empire. Today it is a square named Sultan Ahmet Square with a few fragments of the original structure surviving.

SULTANAHMET MOSQUE (BLUE MOSQUE)More familiarly known as the Blue Mosque due to its interior panelling of blue and white Iznik tiles, it was built for Sultan Ahmet I between 1609 - 1616.

HAGIA SOPHIA (Sultanahmet, Old town)Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum at the Turkish Republic, Hagia Sophia has always been the precious of its time.

EYÜP SULTAN MOSQUE (Eyüp)The Eyüp Sultan Mosque is situated in the dis-trict of Eyüp, near the Golden Horn, outside the Walls of Constantinople. Built in 1458, it was the first mosque constructed by the Ottoman Turks fol-lowing the Conquest of Constantinople in 1453.The mosque rises next to the place where Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, the standard-bearer of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, is said to have been buried during the Arab assault on Constantinople in 670. His tomb is greatly venerated by Muslims, attracting many pil-grims. Some of the personal belongings of Muhammad are preserved in the building that houses the tomb.

GALATA TOWER (Galata, Taksim)The Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, just to the north of the Golden Horn’s junction with the Bosphorus. One of the city’s most striking land-marks, it is a high, cone-capped cylinder that dom-inates the skyline and offers a panoramic vista of Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula and its environs.

MINIATURK (Eyüp)Minimized theme park of a great country. The park contains 122 models done in 1/25th scale. 58 of the structures are from Istanbul, 52 are from Anatolia, and 12 are from the Otto-man territories that today lie outside of Turkey.

MUSEUMS IN ISTANBUL

PANORAMA 1453 HISTORY MUSEUM (Topkapi)The Panorama 1453 Historical Museum is located across from the spot on the Topkapi Edirnekapi ram-parts. The museum is a panorama painting about the conquest of Constantinople. Here the visitor will wit-ness a scene of the Fall of Constantinople, in partic-ularly the moment the Ottoman troops broke the Byz-antine defences of the city. After the fall, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, gained the title of Fatih (conqueror). The painting surrounding measures 38 meters in di-ameter and covers an area of 2,350 square meters.

ISTANBUL MODERNThe Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, Turkey’s first private museum to organize modern and con-temporary art exhibitions, was founded in 2004 and occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus. Istanbul Modern em-braces a global vision to collect, preserve, exhibit and document works of modern and contempo-rary art and make them accessible to art lovers.

GRAND MOSQUE Bursa Grand Mosque or Ulu Cami is a mosque in Bur-sa, Turkey. Built in the Seljuk style, it was ordered by the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I and built between 1396 and 1399. The mosque has 20 domes and 2 minarets.

BURSAKnown as “Green Bursa”, this province stands on the lower slopes of Uludag (Mount Olympos of Mysia, 2543 m) in the Marmara region of Ana-tolia. The title “Green” of Bursa comes from its gardens and parks and of course from its being in the middle of an important fruit growing region.

The Eski Kaplica (Old Spring) of Cekirge district is the oldest in the province. The Karamustafa Pasa Baths are famous, and boast the best hot, mineral waters.

The Ancient Mysian Olympus is a mountain in Bur-sa province with an altitute of 2543 m (8,343 ft)

It is a popular center for winter sports such as skiing and a national park of rich flora. Summer activities such us trekking, camping are very popular for students.

YALOVA

Province Yalova is a province in northwestern Tur-key, along the Sea of Marmara. Its adjacent provinc-es are Bursa to the south, and Kocaeli to the west.

The provincial capital is the city of Yalova. Prior to 1995, Yalova constituted a district of Istanbul Province. The city has a number of tourist attractions such as the Atatürk Pavilion and of course, its famous hot springs in Termal.

At Yalova Thermal, you can enjoy the beautiful flow-ers, visit the museum, have food - drink in one of the restaurants - cafes and more importantly you can enter swimming pool – hamam - sauna to take a bath. Yalova Thermal has many visitors and it is a very cosmopolite place. You can observe many types of people, tourist local people both rich and poor, village or city people.

ABANT Bolu is approximately 200 km from Istanbul and is fa-mous for its verdant black pine and scots pine trees For-ests (also oak, willow, hazelnut trees) and hot springs.Lake Abant is located about 40 km from Bolu cen-ter and is at an altitude of around 1320 meters. The lake is a fresh water lake with an area of about 1.28 square kilometers formed as a result of a great land-slide. The lake is under environmental protection. Another place of interest in the Bolu/Abant area is the Yedigoller (Seven Lakes) National Park, and Golcuk, an artifi cial lake 11 kms south of this. You may also visit Kartalkaya in the KorogluMountains which is a winter ski resort in Turkey, but also beautiful in the summer. 53 kilometers from Bolu is a place called Konuralp, which was an ancient city, where you can see Roman and Byzantine art and ruins.

SAPANCA Lake Sapanca is one of the few lakes in Turkey, which provides drinking water, but it is exposed to heavy urbanization because of its natural beau-ty and its proximity to the metropolitan Istanbul.

Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast of north-east-ern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province.

Trabzon, located on the historical Silk Road, be-came a melting pot of religions, languages and culture for centuries and a trade gateway to Iran in the southeast and the Caucasus to the northeast.

It is a popular tourist destination. Uzungöl is located in the province of Trabzon, about 90km from the city of Tra-bzon and 70km southeast of Rize. On its shore is Uzu-ngöl village with traditional wooden houses as well as modern hotels, restaurants and recreational facilities.
