We profiled 5 top Nigerian designers taking part in the Native & Vogue Port Harcourt Inter-national Fashion Week. These are designers who have achieved fame and success around the continent and internationally.

Ituen Bassey is a graduate of the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Ife. She designed and tailored costumes for stage productions and beauty pageants during her under-graduate years. Her love for the arts and fashion took her to London to further her studies at the American College in London and London College of Fashion where she majored in Tailoring and Clothing Technology. She went on to excel in sample making for established designers. She continued building her repertoire by moving onto bespoke bridal wear for a variety of clientele. She later introduced her day and formal wear under the Ituen Basi label which she sold directly through selected outlets including concessions at the Chelsea Collection, London.

Ituen Bassey launched her first home-grown collection in Lagos, Nigeria in 2009. Her unique use of ankara produces exceptional but wearable art pieces, which are contemporary expressions of enduring sophistication. This has made her pieces a roaring success in Nigeria. Her fresh design interpretation and fabric treatment have since begun a new era of unique ankara designs. Her ‘Ankara and Beads’ collection earned her “The Most Innovative Designer” award in 2009 whilst her ‘Independence’ collection earned her “Emerging Designer of the Year, Africa” 2010 at the Africa Fashion Week, Johannesburg. In 2011, at the first ever Arise Magazine Fashion Week, her ‘Love Series’ collection earned her the “Most Creative Designer”. Her ‘Double Take’ collection at the 2012 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa in Johannesburg, earned her “Designer of the Year, Africa”.With a distinct signature that is inspired by old couturiers and designs synonymous with the tradition of the finest quality infused with unquestionable creativity, Ituen Basi ranks among the best in the industry.

Godfather of African fashion (according to words on the streets of the United Kingdom), Adebayo Jones knew he was destined to be a famous fashion designer even at an early age of 12. Having pressurized his mother to buy him a t-shirt with bold imprints “I’M REALLY FAMOUS”, it became a fascination for him and led to his making t-shirts for his younger ones with newspapers, forcing them to a mock fashion parade.

The London-based fashion designer and style consultant is synonymous with exquisite fashion. He has long been associated with glamour, elegance, opulence and style and has continued to build a name for himself, at home and abroad. The media and critics of the fashion industry describe him as the KING OF COUTURE – for the individuality of his pieces speaks for him in the international fashion community.

The multi-award winning designer, Adebayo Jones, having completed a Humanities degree at university in 1985, he returned to his first love – Fashion Design. Even while in school, he has always known fashion was his passion. He said: “I knew then that after my degree, this had to be my world,” according to Pan-African Magazine Ventures Africa.

He enrolled in a leading fashion college in London to acquire the requisite skills for his craft. Today, he is renowned for creating his own fabrics and presenting the most lavish and luxurious collections of gowns, ranging from silks to brocades, velvets, chiffons, organzas, crochets and damask while presenting fine, clean and classic lines. His new bridge couture prêt, a porter collection also reflects the style and the elegance that has defined his career over the years while his success has opened doors for others in his field from Africa to Europe.

Frank Osodi prides himself on his dynamic nature. He started his career as a model for fashion houses like Dakova, Supreme Stitches and Nikki Africanna amongst others.

Frank also ventured into choreography and model management before finding his footing in make-up with his label, House of Bunor, and fashion designing. As a make-up artist, he has handled television commercials for a lot of Nigerian products such as Macleans toothpaste, Ultrasheen, Chocolate Eclairs, Indomie Noodles and others.

Frank has been in the fashion industry since 1989 but his

label, House of Bunor, started about 15 years ago and has clothed the most high profile people in Nigeria. His name reached

the household mark when he was selected by Silverbird

to be the make-up artist and designer that finally led Agbani Darego to her reign as Miss World 2001. Since then, the name Frank Osodi has been associated with simple elegance and effortless beauty. He described the Agbani Darego Miss World outfit as “a simple, deep yoked outfit, chosen just for simplicity and the preferred colour – green to portray Nigeria.”

“She (Agbani Darego) was introduced to me by the Pageant Manager of Silverbird Production after she won the Most Beautiful Girl in

Nigeria contest. I was asked to groom her for the Miss World 2001 contest; that is, to handle her make-up, not only for the contest but also for the duration of her reign as the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria,” Frank told an online magazine during an interview. “It has brought me to limelight as everybody is curious to know about my designs.”

He has since spear-headed events that brought Nigerian fashion to the forefront with programmes like the West African Fashion Week 2008. He still remains a force to reckon with in the Nigerian fashion scene, specializing in bride and bridesmaid garments. His pieces are quintessentially African inspired.

Mai Atafo launched MAI (Mai Atafo Inspired) in 2007. Mai Atafo specializes in suits for men and glamorous red carpet dresses. In July 2011, Mai Atafo launched “Weddings By MAI”, thereby adding gorgeous wedding dresses to his brand to cater for all clothing needs. Mai Atafo, with his clothing line, has developed a reputation for gorgeous and perfect fitting dresses that translate into the sophisticated and elegant look every bride desires and not to forget his well tailored bespoke suits.Though Mai Atafo continues to strive as a fashion designer, he still consults as a marketing specialist. He also develops concepts and coordinates and produces events and TV shows.

Mai Atafo was born in Ile-Ife, Osun State. An indigene of Edo State, he spent most of his childhood in Benin City, Lagos and London. He holds a Second-Class Upper degree in Agricultural Economics and Extension from Edo State University, Ekpoma. He went on to obtain a post-graduate degree in Information Technology from City University London, England.

Adapted and modified from men’s fashion, the boyfriend look allows women to dress in similar clothes as men but with a soft side to it. Typical of the boy look is the boyfriend blazer or jack-et. The loose pair of trousers also falls into this category.

The boyfriend blazer for example can be worn in interesting ways; either you make the blazer oversized or you roll up the sleeves to create the impression that it is too long for you. The whole idea is to wear something a little too big for you.

So, if you were a boy, what other accessories will you spice your outfit with? Here is a list.

Nothing says sexy more than an off the shoulder dress. This trend has an unintentional appeal, and it’s the perfect way to show some skin without going overboard. Whether completely exposed or covered with transparent lace, wearing those shoulders bare is a sexy trend that nearly everyone can embrace. The seductive look can take any outfit up a notch, exposing the body in a playful way.

“Indeed wine goes with

smooth words and better still when presented over a candle light dinner

or at a picnic with some cheese, it definitely will

You Can Win a Woman with Good Wine

Matome Mbatha is the Market Manager, Wines of South Africa (WAOSA). He is involved in the development of the South African wine industry in the entire African continent and Americas.Penultimate Sunday, WOSA held a one day grand tasting at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. What a tasting ceremony it was!In this chat, Matome spoke about wine in a way only an expert could.

Why did you think of hosting this wine gala tasting in Nigeria?I am glad that I am here today running a second show in Nigeria. And the number of people that we have, is evident enough that Nigerians love good life. You cannot in anyway separate wine from a good lifestyle. Whether it is wine threshing, or wine tourism, it’s all about good living. Through wine, people or families get to sit at table and discuss issues. Above all, as Wines of South Africa (WOSA), we communicate clearly, the responsible use of alcohol. I understand that in Nigeria, the ministry of transport will be running a campaign on drinking and driving. And one of our missions here is to highlight the importance of drinking good quality drink. You don’t over indulge. You respect and appreciate it. Wine is a product that showcases style, and affluence and Nigeria has got plenty of that. We couldn’t have come at a better time.

When you talk about, wine, you make it sound romantic. Is there something romantic about wines?I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s a fact that any man or woman who engages with something as beautiful as wine, will think of quality, character and excellence and that literarily will translate to gorgeous. You can get a beautiful woman over a bottle of wine when you speak to her.

You did say that you can get a beautiful woman over a bottle of wine. Share with me the most romantic thing you have done with wine?Indeed wine goes with smooth words and better still when presented over a candle light dinner or at a picnic with some cheese, it definitely will score you points.

Some people drink but don’t know when to stop. Will you be okay emptying a bottle all by yourself? That is why it is very important for us to communicate that binging is not what we are talking about in terms of drinking. When you drink, you don’t drink all by yourself but with people around. In that way, it is very unlikely for you to get drunk. Wine is to be shared with people.

How is your life in wine?Well, being surrounded with wine, this is a product that I am very passionate about so I take wine in moderation. I don’t abuse it. I appreciate it. Let it be a drink of choice that brings memories. You should know when to stop.

I notice that all the wines have alcohol. Don’t you do fruit wine? The art of wine is that you ferment the grape first. If you want grape juice, we do have an arm that provides grapes. But let me say this is a wine event today so we have wines here.

In what way is this different from what you have back home? Many of these kinds of event take place back home in South Africa. Let me say that we are now a good wine- drinking nation. So, there are plenty of opportunities and platforms like this created for them to showcase their wines. So in a nutshell, this being our second event this year, we are looking at making it an annual event and obviously there are many other wine events that will take place in Nigeria. So it’s an opportunity for everyone.

Do consumers have input in the kinds of wines you produce?Indeed. There is a level you get to and then you begin to tell one wine from another. When you know, then you can choose. When you choose, then the producer knows what the needs of the consumers are so that they can produce wine according their needs.

What tips would you give to help identify a good wine? It’s simple. You have to taste the wine. You can’t know the difference from one to another if you don’t explore. It doesn’t have to be very expensive. All you need do is to train your palette to know one wine from the other.

When you become knowledgeable, then you’ll be able to pick up which one you like best. You

could have five different bottles of wine with different price points. You have

to know what you like and what you don’t like because you might get an expensive wine that you don’t like. So the key is, exploring and training your palette and knowing how to differentiate one wine from another.

How do you preserve your wine when you don’t finish a

bottle? Wine can be kept closed in a fridge for

TREATMENTS

We all know the rules; cleanse tone and moisturize! Do your body scrubs, facials, manicures, pedicures and all the works. The rules haven’t changed, but the methods have gotten more sophisticated and more effective. Check out three basic treatments and their much better variants.

YOU

BEAUTY

When you get a body scrub, hands or a machine are combined with a body scrub to blitz off dead skin cells and get you a lovely glow. In comes the hammam. This treatment trounces the regular body scrub. The process includes getting rubbed down with herbs, a steam treatment, a vigorous full body rub down with a hammam sponge( you actually see dead skin rolling off!) . This wonderful treatment ends with Argan oil being rubbed all over your skin for that luxurious feel. The result: an instant glow with reduced blemish action. Keep it up and flawlessness becomes a possibility.

During a facial, your face is thoroughly cleansed, steamed and blemishes are extracted. An oxygen facial however, does you one better. It delivers a mixture of hyperbaric oxygen, or pure oxygen at a high pressure, and anti-aging serum through an airbrush to the face. It’s almost as though someone is using a tiny power washer to pump oxygen and moisturizer into the skin. People who get oxygen facials say the process helps also aids makeup application because it gives the skin a smooth and moisturized surface. Makeup can be applied right after the oxygen facial, as opposed to traditional facials, which often require a 12-hour waiting period before you can apply any makeup.

THE RESULT: Super soft paws and nail polish that lasts two whole weeks!

After your regular manicure, you get a change of polish. With the gel manicure, a paraffin treatment is thrown in, then the gel nail polish is applied and cured under a Uv light.

UNSEEN TO THE WORLD

RÉFLEXION OPTIQUE:

The key behind this new campaign is that any woman adorned in the new collection

Réflexion Optique is able to reflect and unveil every side of her personality – ensuring she will never be unseen to those around her. The model expresses every side of her spirit with Vlisco. Playfulness, nonchalance, flamboyance, empowerment

EYE-CATCHING. Every fabric of Réflexion Optique is alive with angular forms unveiling layer after layer of shape, form and complexityHYPNOTIC ILLUSIONS. The new collection brings many fabrics to life with the trompe l’oeil effect. Two-dimensional shapes appear to be three-dimensional. What appears to have physical depth, is in fact flat – bringing a wonderful dynamism to every design.

A FRESH COLOUR EXPRESSION. This collection introduced a brand new colour palette for Vlisco – romantic pastels. This ensures Réflexion Optique is all the more exciting, all the more ‘unseen’. The experience can be likened to the visual joy of the Hortensia flower. One time you gaze upon it and it

appears to be purple, another time and it’s pink and again it’s

blue. This delightful perplexity ensures the colourful beauty of the fabrics never give rise to boredom. They are a unique joy time and again.

They are always unseen.

LIMITED EDITIONS., unlimited potential. To add to the selection of irresistible textiles, Vlisco created new Limited Edition fabrics providing a new design signature to classic patterns: a dazzling shimmer, an embellishment that sharpens the attraction of the geometric nature of the patterns and lures the eye like never before. ORIGINAL SCARVES. The striking Réflexion Optique inspired scarves are fashioned from the finest, ethereal silk fabric creating a soft, alluring handle and the most refined finish. Created using extra large fabric sizing, the multi-dimensional scarves are perfect as an accessory or a glorious statement as part of an outfit.

How do you preserve your wine when you don’t finish a

bottle? Wine can be kept closed in a fridge for

up to 3 days.

What was your experience in Nigeria like?

Nigeria is an exciting market with a growing thirst for wine knowledge and Wines of South Africa is just as ready to provide this information. MATOME MBATHA

NEWWe all know the rules; cleanse tone and moisturize! Do your body scrubs, facials, manicures, pedicures and all the works. The rules haven’t changed, but the methods have gotten more sophisticated and more effective. Check out three basic treatments and their much better variants.

YOU

THE FULL BODY SCRUB VERSUS THE MOROCCAN HAMMAM...

TRADITIONAL MANICURE VERSUS THE GEL MANICURE...

After your regular manicure, you get a change of polish. With the gel manicure, a paraffin treatment is thrown in, then the gel nail polish is applied and cured under a Uv light.
