In this open lecture, Professor Jan Bremmer proceeds from this general observation in order to further scrutinize the idea that sacrificial killing developed from the hunt. Special attention will be paid to sacrificial practices in the last centuries of the Roman Empire. About the lecturer Jan Bremmer was Chair of Religious Studies at the University of Groningen between 1990-2009. He has held numerous fellowships and guest professorships at renowned universities and research centers, most recently at the University of Munich, Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York, and the Max-Weber-Kolleg in Erfurt.
