Service + Your Major = ???
Why are we in college? Oh, right—to pursue a path of study that will lead to a career that will hope-fully have some sort of positive im-pact on the world.
As Circle K-ers, this hope of having a positive impact is especially strong. How can you use your major make service not just a hobby or ex-tracurricular activity, but an integral part of your everyday life?
Check out some of these ideas!
Social Work If you’re majoring in social work, you’re pretty much majoring in community service. Social workers are trained to
identify places and people in need and provide the necessary services to them. If the social worker cannot personally
fulfill a need, they have access to an entire network of people, organizations, and programs that could help. Social
workers may work in hospitals, schools, mental health clinics, or any number of service-based places.
Education Education majors will one day be teachers—
and have a whole classroom full of students
to inspire to do service. As a teacher, you
could do hands-on service projects in the
classroom, focus on different organizations
that help other people, or even start a K-
Kids, Builders, or Key Club at your school
to get students passionate about serving oth-
ers all the time.

Non-profits and charities are often run like
businesses—they need just as many business
minded leaders as corporations and also re-
quire a great deal of marketing or advertising.
With a degree in marketing or business, you
could help run a charity organization, adver-
tise its cause, and help raise funds for it. Even
if you chose not to work full time for such a
charity, volunteering your skills in these areas
will make a huge impact.
Business/Marketing Nursing Nursing is another inherently
service-oriented profession—just
working at a hospital while hav-
ing a positive attitude does so
much good for those who are
sick. Aside from the standard
job, however, nurses can work
for health-related charities. They
are often needed internationally
for global health initiatives such
as HIV testing or vaccinations.
