These Motels were built some year* ago - i n fact forward planning i s still proceeding to build more in localities where holiday accommodation is favourable - from a very wise investment of Army's allocation of Wharf Funds from the 1951 Strike. We come under Category 2, "Retired Army R.F." I t is appreciated that Serving people and their young families under Category 1, have that priority during school holidays etc., but Eetired folk can always get in during the *off season"$ and during this period of course they are Interested In keeping them occupied, thus paying their way. From conversation I gather that the Welfare Section is genuinely inter- ested in the welfare of Retired Old Soldiers. Having stayed at several of them myself, I can ce r t a i n l y v e r i f y that they are up to the standard of any c i v i l i a n Motel' - and at j u s t $8.00 a day -that's great value.

Other venues were also looked a t , hut recommen-dationwould be Spa, to be considered by your Committeeat t h i s Sat's Meeting, 24 Mar - more of t h i s l a t e r i n next Newsletter. We are working to get a l l the guff i n hand as early as possible.

G.A.(Hookey STUART - also r e t i r e d for the second time, a f t e r some years with HZBC, now l i v i n g i n a cosy Unit in^Mosgiel, writes i n t e r e s t i n g l y of the old days of horses and men on the range at Sutton,. Central Otago -much water under the bridge since then Hookey - a grand l e t t e r and only sorry space does'nt allow f u l l publication. Recently overseas - Pat HALL to Hawaii and Reg NUTSFORD on walkabout i n A u s t r a l i a . We hope both your journeys were enjoyable. I t I s int e r e s t i n g to note from the present R o l l , the variety of Appointments being carried out by a l l Ranks - eighteen overseas, mainly i n Singapore, and numerous within KZ. - i f you remember, E.R.E. appointments for Gunners were few and f a r between i n the old days — but i t c l e a r l y shows, now as always, - the v e r s a t i l i t y of the Gunner. Maj-Gen HASSETT, one of our distinguished Members, now plunged deeply into the Commercial world, has taken h i s bowler hat to Kuala Lumpur, representing several important NZ Firms i n that area, a b i t close to the world's hot spots, but we wish you w e l l . Our congratulations to E r i c AUTRIDGE on his election to President, Takapuna RSA. Two other Members, Eddie (Red) RYAN - a stalwart of many years with them, and C y r i l HAYDEN, a previous Vice President, remain with the Executive.

6. WAIOURU GUNNERS CLUB BALL ss The Annual Event held near Gunners Bay i n May, at Chateau Tongariro. Unfortunately, firm date at present i s not known, but they assure us that Members are most welcome. I f you wishto attend please contact,

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS ss I t has been pointed out, that i n addition to past attachments of RNZEME and RNZSigs personnel, that other Corps, RNZE, RNZASC, and RNZMC, were attached to 16 Ed Regt I n Vietnam. A study of the Rules showed that these people could be e l i g i b l e as Associate Members. Any Member who proposes one who wishes to j o i n us, give us a few details - Regt No. , Rank, length of Service, length of attachment, etc. Such a proposal w i l l be vetted by Committee on the normal way.

8. FINANCIAL MATTERS ss (a) ANNUAL SUB. With t h i s Newsletter you w i l l f i nd a small billet-dous reminding you of your Sub, position. A great many Members are well i n Credit - they na t u r a l l y won't get one. But post i t i n , or a l t e r n a t i v e l y give i t to a Dlst . Rep. who w i l l forward i t on. (b) INVESTMENT OF FUNDS ss We are i n a reasonably sound Financial state however, and as directed by . the A.G.M, to invest some of i t at a more favourable rate % on your behalf we bought $700.00 I n Govt. COMING EVENTS ss ANZAC DAY s We hope to be as well represented as usual at the Takapuna RSA Ceremony - Auckland Members please note, l e t ' s have a good turnout again i GUNNERS DAY ss 16 Fd Regt w i l l parade at Auckland Cenotaph at 1030 hrs Sat. 26 May, and are at the moment drafting t h e i r Movement Order, and l e t t e r to us, asking for our attendance. Once again, Auckland Members, we hope as many as possible can be there. Keep i n touch - see our "Newsbits", don't you agree that i t i s nice to read even a republished 'Newsbit' from an old mate.
