From the Publisher

F irstly, I should like to wish my dear friend Meredith Worsfold a belated happy90th birthday. You may remember Meredith wrote for the Ashtead &

Leatherhead Local memories of his life in Ashtead village, from his early years inthe late 1920’s right up to the present and I, for one, very much enjoyed readingabout the village and his life, so bless you Meredith and many happy returns.

It all seems rather flat now that the Olympics and Paralympics have come to anend, but it has been a wonderful summer of sport. I was especially humbled by theathletes taking part in the Paralympics as their achievements seemed even greater due to themobility problems and other issues they had to firstly overcome. To me, their accomplishmentswere awe-inspiring. My sister, who is herself disabled, said that the Paralympics were an inspirationto her.

Karen Goodridge of Wheels for the World charity asked me to run an article about their involvementin the recent Paralympics, it’s a lovely article and the charity does a great deal of good to helpmobilise those people in far off countries who do not have access to a wheelchair. Karen’s heart-warming article can be found on page 58.

I recently had the pleasure of meeting a real-life ‘Gamesmaker’ who helped out at the ParalympicGames. Despite spending over 14 hours a day on her feet, she was absolutely thrilled to have beengiven the opportunity to help out at the Games, what a lovely lady and her passion was infectious.

By the time this magazine begins its distribution no doubt many children will be preparing theirHalloween costumes for the madness that is the HalloweenFestival in Leatherhead town centre on 31st October, thismonth’s front cover gives you just a taste of how much fun thisannual festival is. More details on page 24... and may theforce be with you!

October sees the annual Arts Alive Festival, with lots of diverseshows and events running from 1st-31st October, I have givenyou just a small idea of what has been planned on pages 42, 44and 46.

I’ve just discovered that the Leatherhead Community RecyclingCentre (endearingly called ‘The Tip’) won’t be opening in latesummer due to unforeseen circumstances, but will re-open inNovember, details on page 18. Along similar lines, Mole ValleyDistrict Council have upgraded their recycling services for localresidents, and a statement from the Council on what can andcannot be accepted with your usual recycling bin collection canbe found on page 40.

Oh, and don’t forget, clocks go back one hour on 28th October- doesn’t really feel like we’ve had a proper summer this year, boo hoo.

“Trains and boats and planes are passing by...”

Well perhaps not boats and planes in Ashtead, but atleast there is some good news about our local BusService.

As from September 2nd 2012 there will be 479 busservices on Sundays running between Bookham andEpsom via Ashtead. Going towards Epsom it will be a 2-hourly service, with the 479 towards Epsom reachingAshtead Pond on a Sunday at 09:28. The last bus backfrom Epsom will be at 19.45. This is on trial for a yearso it is important that it is well used if we wish to keepit. In other words “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it!”

During the week the running time of the 479 is to beextended. There will be a bus running half an hourlater towards Epsom and two later buses leaving Epsom, the last reaching Ashtead Pond at 19.32. On Saturdays,a later bus has been added from Epsom.

The 408 is going to run every hour between Epsom andLeatherhead and the 516 is also going to be morefrequent. As a result more buses will serve the villageand those living on the A24 will be able to experience amuch better service.

Those who catch the bus at the top of the village to gotowards Leatherhead will be extremely pleased to learnthat a shelter is being seriously considered.

All the new times of the 479 will be found at the busstops and via the village websitewww.ashteadresidents.org.uk/local-information/travel-information. Hard copies can be picked up at the PostOffices, Ashtead News at the bottom of Woodfield Laneand at the library. Booklets containing all our local busservices will also be available at the above locations.

And even more good news about our station

You will all be aware that Ashtead is to receive a newstation building to replace the present pre-fab which iswell past its ‘sell-by’ date. Following detailed planningand consultation the final stages have now beenreached. The following details have just been releasedby Southern Railway regarding the enlarged car parkand the new station building. The key milestones are:

• Start on site 3/9/12• Car Park Extension Complete 23/10/12• Hoarding goes up in car park for new building24/10/12

• Switch over to new building 22/4/13• Demolition of existing T/O starts 23/4/13• Practical completion 6/6/13

Please bear in mind that these dates are likely tochange as weather conditions and other unforeseenfactors will undoubtedly play a part, but this is theschedule at the moment. The plan is to extend thecurrent car park first so that when the time comes toerect hoarding around the area where the new stationis to be built, the loss of some car parking spaces willnot adversely affect the overall capacity of the carpark.

By the time you are reading this article the car parkextension should be well under way, though judging bythis summer’s unusual weather, they may have alreadybeen delayed by heavy snow!

Oh yes … and apologies to Burt Bacharach too!

I've worked in Ashtead for over 25 years andam still looking for a castle anywhere in thevillage! However for nearly all of us ourhomes are our biggest asset. So why do somany of us fail to insure our homes properlyand at the same time why do so many of uspay far more than we need to?

The Internet is a very good source of cheapinsurance and I'm sure many of you havebenefited from cheaper premiums from thissource BUT how do you know that you havethe right cover? Tapping figures into acomputer screen will not give you advice onwhat you should be insuring and just asimportantly for how much.

So what are the alternatives, you can always stay with people you've been with for years andcross your fingers, or you can pick up the phone or wander into our office where we will takethe time to talk to you and discuss your insurance needs in detail, at the end of the day if wecannot improve on your existing cover you will at least go away with the knowledge that youhave the right cover at the right price.

When looking for buildings and contents insurance for your home there are a number ofconsiderations to take into account:

• What is my actual sum insured? How do I work it out?• Do I need accidental damage cover for my buildings and contents?• Should I have a large excess to reduce the premium?• What cover do I need for valuables that I take outside of the home?• Are my children's possessions covered whilst they are at university?• Do they need to know about that claim a few years ago?

For these and a host of other questions we are happy to talk through themwith you on01372 277271.

Whilst there may not be anything somomentous ever again, we are still spoilt for choicewith special activities on the horizon, some of whichneed willing hands.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMN

Towards the end of 2011and at the start of 2012there was a series ofCriminal Damage offencesin the Bookham,Leatherhead, Ashtead and

Epsom areas. The damage was causedby the tag ‘BEK’ or ‘BEKO’ beingsprayed on property in the abovementioned areas. The prevalence ofthe tag caused considerable upsetamongst the local community.

In January, images of the personresponsible were captured on CCTV inEpsom. The images were of a verypoor quality and, whilst the facecould not be recognised, the suspectwas wearing distinctive clothing. Theimages were distributed to localSurrey officers.

Later in January, a PCSO carried outa stop and check on two people inEpsom and took their details. He laterrealised that one of those stoppedwas wearing similar clothing to themale in the CCTV. Local officers thenarrested two people on suspicion ofthe various Criminal Damageoffences. One of the two wasreleased with no further action beingtaken. The other, Perri Kaye, a malewith connections in both Bookhamand Epsom, was bailed whilst furtherenquiries were carried out.

In July of this year, Kaye attendedGuildford Crown Court where hepleaded guilty to a string of CriminalDamage offences. He was placedunder a 12 month Community Orderwhich requires him to complete 150

hours of unpaid work. He was alsoordered to pay a total of £1,826.50 incompensation to the various victims.

This was a good result. Whilst graffitimay not seem like a serious offence,it has a strong impact on the localcommunity. We will always do ourbest to track down and pursue thoseresponsible for Criminal Damage.

In the last few weeks a new tag hasstarted to appear in Bookham. Thetag is ‘PATS’. Given past experience, this may well start to appear acrossin other areas. If you are see anyother examples of this, or may beaware of who is responsible, pleasecontact us by calling 101.Alternatively, you can call CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Leatherhead Community Recycling Centrereopening November 2012

SITA Surrey is extending and redeveloping Leatherhead community recyclingcentre and waste transfer station, Randalls Road, on behalf of Surrey CountyCouncil.

Work started in early January 2012 and it was anticipated that it would takearound eight months, finishing in mid-September.

Unfortunately the work is now likely to take longer than first expected, as SITA experienced someunforeseen issues when moving a power substation across the site and had to carry out someadditional work to the site drainage system.

SITA now anticipate the Leatherhead facility will reopen to the public in November 2012

The Leatherhead facility is being redeveloped to provide residents with a modern, accessible andeasy to use site. The upgrade will include:

• Improved parking and road layout to help the public move around the site more easily and toreduce queuing

• Separate entrances for the public and site service vehicles to help reduce congestion at theentrance

• Drop off area for garden waste carried in trailers• Other alterations planned include -• Redevelopment of the waste transfer station to include a fully enclosed building

for household waste from district and borough councils• Improved traffic management with the complete separation of neighbouring

Grundon and Thames Water vehicle access, as currently they pass through the site

Ruth was having trouble sleeping. She'd argued withSam and was still wallowing in her fury. She was fedup with bickering children and a husband who tookher for granted. Turning away from him she staredat the wall, trying to calm herself down. Her mindwas a torrent of frustration, her eyes darted undertheir lids and her legs twitched with restlessimpatience.

Then the snoring started. The deep relaxed rumbleof a man in the depths of a peaceful slumber. Inthat moment she felt a wave of irritation engulf her.How dare he sleep?! How dare he forget theirargument so easily, be so selfish and insensitive andthen fall into easy dreams, without a care in theworld?

She turned over to watch him. In the soft glow ofthe television standby button she could see hisnostrils, gently flaring to the rhythm of a steadysnore. His mouth was slightly open and his face wassquashed into the pillow.

She stared at him dispassionately. He used to be ahandsome man but his features now had lost theirdefinition and crows' feet were creeping round hiseyes. His hair was thinning and beginning to turngrey at the temples. Even in sleep he looked tired. When she first met him, Sam was vibrant andspontaneous. Ruth remembered the deliciouslurching of her stomach whenever she saw him. Sheloved the sparkle in his eyes when he smiled at herand the private jokes they shared. Life was anadventure and they were keen to experience it tothe full.

After university Ruth and Sam went backpackingaround Europe and loved to take long mountainwalks. She remembered how she felt when heproposed. She felt safe. They were startinganother adventure which would always be full ofexcitement and understanding. Even when Bencame along they still managed to go walking, theirchuckling son bobbing in a baby carrier on Sam'sshoulders. They enjoyed their child and laughedtogether as he bounced his way into toddlerhood.

When Daniel and Sarah were born, life grewcomplicated. Sam's job became more demandingand a mundane routine took over. When Sarahstarted nursery, Ruth went back to work but neverachieved the promotions she'd hoped for and thedays passed in a flurry of routine and multi-tasking.

Things were supposed to ease up once the childrenwere older but school and sport activities then tookover. Ruth became a taxi driver and Samdisappeared into his laptop at every opportunity.

Ruth looked at her husband lying beside her andwondered what had happened. Was this all that wasleft? Friends of theirs had recently separated and

she was worried their relationship was going thesame way.

They didn't have a terrible marriage. She loved itwhen they were out with friends. He would smilewith his eyes and send his love across the room. Headored his children and was enormously proud oftheir achievements. He worked hard, at a stressfuljob he didn't particularly enjoy, simply because itpaid well. Sam could still make her laugh and theyaccepted each other's quirky ways. They had yearsof shared memories which would always bind themtogether.

Ruth thought back to the argument earlier in theevening. Sam had been sitting at his laptop in theliving room. He was wearing earphones and workingon a presentation for following day. Ruth wascooking the evening meal in the kitchen. All wascalm until Daniel and Ben started arguing over a newXbox game belonging to Ben. Daniel had played onit without his older brother's permission and hadcompleted the game. Ben was livid and hadthumped his brother on the back. Daniel retaliatedand lashed out at Ben, just as Sarah was walkingpast. A piercing scream echoed round the house asshe got walloped on the shoulder.

Ruth raced from the kitchen to see what was goingon. Sam continued to stare at his screen, resolutelyignoring the mayhem while Ruth berated her sonsand tried to calm Sarah down. By the time she hadconfiscated the Xbox, comforted her daughter andreturned to her cooking, the chicken was burnt andthe water in the potatoes had run dry, leaving anacrid smell hanging in the air. Sam tried to explainthat he was under pressure to finish his work andthat another person losing their temper would onlyhave made things worse but Ruth was too caught upin her frustration at the spoilt supper.

Ruth now looked again at Sam. His face was asfamiliar as her own. He was still a handsome man,in spite of the greying hair. In fact, it rather suitedhim. She could see now that the crow's feet wereactually laughter lines and his mouth was halfcurved into a smile, even in his sleep.

He opened his eyes and gave his wife a sleepy kiss.

"Are you ok darling? I'm sorry about earlier. I reallyhad to finish that presentation. Don't be cross withme." He snuggled up to her in the bed. "Supper wasgreat. I was in the mood for boiled eggs anyway... "

“Yesterday I was a maggot crawling on the ground -today I am a butterfly.”

Leatherhead Rotary Club is appealing to Mole Valley residents andbusinesses to collect bar codes from packets of Yorkshire tea andteabags to help them provide vital mobility equipment to disabledchildren and adults around the world.

It is estimated that over 100 million people worldwide with physicaldisabilities need wheelchairs, but less than 1% own or have access toone. In many developing countries, the only way for a person withphysical disabilities to be mobile is to crawl along the ground or becarried by family and friends. Since 2003 Rotary Clubs throughout GreatBritain have sponsored thousands of wheelchairs to more than 20countries around the world, as well as participating in their delivery.

By collecting bar codes from packets of Yorkshire tea and teabags, as well as many otherYorkshire Tea products, YOU can help Leatherhead Rotary Club add to this total. The bar codefrom a box of 80 teabags is worth 10p, with the largest catering bag of 1,200 teabags being worth£1.50. Each donation of £75 enables a wheelchair to be delivered to a person in need somewherearound the world. In the words of one beneficiary: “Yesterday I was a maggot crawling on theground. Today I am a butterfly.”

Please send your barcodes to ‘Leatherhead Rotary Club Barcode Appeal, c/o Donovan Hewitt,Leatherhead Theatre, 7 Church Street, Leatherhead KT22 8DN’ – thank you.

On Sunday 2 September the water at LittletonSailing Club reflected the unusual sight of large, black, shaggy working Newfoundland dogspulling volunteers to the safety of the slipway ina graphic demonstration of these dogs’ amazingskills in aquatic rescue. For three of therescues the dog even towed the safety boat tothe shore, one time with two volunteers in thewater. In another rescue the dog towed fivevolunteers to the slipway at one go.

The participants had raised sponsorship, thenafter jumping into the lake from the safety boatthey were rescued by a Newfoundland Dog whohad either also jumped off the boat or swumout from the slipway. Whatever their age, allthe participants who had volunteered to berescued really enjoyed experiencing theintelligence and power of these remarkabledogs.

The dogs are being supplied by SEWN, the SouthEastern Working Newfoundlands club. These14st, (90kg) dogs are wonderful animals andinformation about them can be found onwww.sewn.org. SEWN supplied theknowledgeable dog handlers and full safetycover.

Littleton Sailing Club made a part of theirsailing lake available for the event togetherwith parking and changing facilities – hotshowers being very welcome to the volunteerswimmers! Their details can be found atwww.littletonsc.co.uk.

As part of its commitment to encouragingrecycling, Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) isincreasing the range of recycling services itoffers. With immediate effect, on alternateweeks, residents will be able to recycle theirunwanted textiles and small electricalequipment from the kerbside. They will also beable recycle a greater range of plastics in theirgreen recycling bin.

Textiles will be collected with recycling (greenbin) and small electrical equipment with refuse(black bin) on residents’ normal collection days.

Mole Valley’s waste collection vehicles havebeen adapted so they can collect textiles at thesame time as recycling. Residents just need toput their unwanted, clean and dry, textiles inany tied-up carrier bag and place it next totheir recycling bin. Those who usually take theirunwanted clothes to charity shops should carryon doing so. This is simply an alternative way torecycle them.

All textiles can be recycled, including pairs ofshoes, clothes, curtains, bed sheets, blanketsand towels. Even tatty textiles are welcome, asthey can be shredded and reused in a variety ofways.

The new service will reduce the number ofreusable and recyclable textiles going to landfillwith general waste via black bins, which is bothwasteful and bad for the environment.

It is just as easy for residents to recycle theirold or broken small electrical items. They

should go in a tied-up carrierbag, with the plugs and cablesstill attached, and placed nextto the black refuse bin on aresident’s normal collectionday. Batteries should be put ina separate, tied-up bag andplaced on top of the bin.

Mole Valley’s collectionvehicles now have a smallcompartment that can holdelectrical items up to 35cm by40cm. Unfortunately, equipment larger than thiscannot be collected. Pleasetake this to your local bring siteor tip.

Like textiles recycling, this newservice will reduce the amount

of small electrical equipment going to landfillvia black refuse bins. Instead, it will be recycledto make new items.

Improvements at Mole Valley’s MaterialsRecovery Facility (MRF), where recycling isprocessed, mean that as well as plastic bottles, residents can now recycle a range of pots, tubsand trays from around the house. Once cleaned, they can go in the green recycling bin onresidents’ usual collection day. At the moment, plastic films, such as peel-back lids, and plasticbags, such as carrier bags and cereal bags, can’tbe recycled.

Councillor James Friend, Portfolio Holder forEnvironment, said: “We’re thrilled to be able tooffer residents even more opportunities torecycle – it’s exactly what they’ve been askingus for. The new services help us to continue toprotect the environment of Mole Valley anddeliver Value for Money for local council taxpayers.

“We’re aiming for a recycling rate of 64% by2014 – at the moment Mole Valley is just under60%, so we’re well on the way. I’d like to thankresidents for all their help in achieving what wehave so far and encourage them to takeadvantage of the new services – helping toprotect our local environment."

Free Soil SamplingRHS offers free pH testing to gardeners

during September and OctoberFor gardeners planning to carry out planting this autumn, the Royal HorticulturalSociety (RHS) is offering free pH testing to determine whether their soil is acid oralkaline. All that gardeners have to do is to take five representative soil samples,6 inches deep from around their garden, mix them and bring a two-cupful sampleof this mix to any of the four RHS Plant Centres.

The soil-diagnostic service is being run in conjunction with the charity's ‘AutumnPlanting for Year Round Colour' campaign. The RHS wants to promote planting inautumn when the soil is still warm. This gives plants the head start they need toget established in time for spring when growth is at its peak. Once established, aplant's root systems can cope with summer's dry, warm conditions and they areless likely to fail.

"Every five or so years or when designing and planting your garden, you need to know whether thesoil is acid or alkaline, as different plants thrive in different soils," says Guy Barter, RHS ChiefHorticultural Advisor. "Wet summers can increase soil acidity, so this year checking pH isespecially worthwhile. It is also important to check soil pH before making vegetable plots, planting fruit, when growth is disappointing, or where yellowing of foliage occurs."

On 2 October RHS Garden Wisley is also joining forces with the Horticultural Trades Association toplant thousands of pansies and violas, demonstrating how to get colour in your garden now andbenefit from an even better display next spring.

Volunteers needed for new elderly care projectAge UK Surrey are recruiting volunteers to help run a new project called Proactive ElderlyCare, which is being trialled for a year in the north of Surrey and will hopefully go county-wide in the future.

The role will be to visit elderly people (75+) in their home at a pre-arranged time andconduct an interview with them (with a questionnaire at first), in order to get a detailedpicture of their care needs. The completed questionnaire will be sent to their GPsurgery, where a programme of care and support will be drawn up for them. The aim isto keep people out of hospital as long as possible. There will be a half-day trainingsession for all volunteers and a CRB check will be required.

Volunteer visitors will ideally continue to act as good neighbours, being a link betweenthe patient and their surgery and providing information about services available locally.

The surgeries chosen for the pilot are in Fetcham, Ashtead and Worcester Park.

The Life ListReasons to be Kind to Your ParentsWhen You’re a Kid1. They buy your clothes. And however terribleyou think their fashion sense is now, they’redoing that with a sense of care. Just imaginehow awful you’d look if they were dressing youwith a sense of revenge.

2. They feed you. So indirectly, they’reresponsible for deciding whether you grow upwith sugar cravings, obesity, sensible eatinghabits or a perverse fondness for chicken liversmoothies.

3. They could wait until you have a great bunchof friends and then decide to move. You thinksocial services are going to help with yourrelocation problem? Think again.

4. They tell Father Christmas what presents toleave. Yep, even that awful jumper from yourspinster aunt that you had to wear onChristmas Day for the family photos. Trust me,they had a hand in that too.

5. Who do you think will insure your first car –and probably pay for the garage to fix it whenyou wreck it? That’s right – those mean folksdownstairs who won’t let you do whatever it isyou think life won’t be worth living unless youdo it.

6. They will demand to see your sweetheart andif you think that's embarrassing, wait until theybring out the photo album with you on a rug, naked, with your bum in the air. (All parentsdo this – experts believe it’s a pay it forwardrevenge tactic.)

7. They’ll pick your schools and they set yourpocket money. Ask any gambler – you can’tbeat the house rules indefinitely. It’s the wayof the world, so get used to it.

8. Bottom line – your inheritance is theirscrimping and saving. So, for every penny theydon’t give you for the latest computer gamethe second it comes out in the shops, aproportion of that saving will one day find itsway to you. It's like a trickle down a mountain, gradually gathering in size.

9. They love you. And the really weird thing isthat’s the reason they do all that crazy stuff toyou. And the more you learn about theirbehaviour, the more you can inflict it on yourown kids and then say, "Blame granddad andgrandma – it’s how they brought me up." That'sprobably what your parents say too.

TT he Bacchus Marathon and half marathonorganised by the local company Events to

Live took place on Sunday 9th September. Now in its third year the event, raising moneyfor the Children’s Trust in Tadworth, hasdoubled in size since its conception in 2010, aresounding local success story! Held atDenbies Wine Estate, England’s largestvineyard in Dorking, the Bacchus is the onlyrace of its kind to be held in the UK. Withbreathtaking scenery, just prior to the grapeharvest, participants have the opportunity tosample Denbies award wining wine as theytraverse the route running through thespectacular scenery of the Surrey Hills andNorth Downs.

After what seems like a year of rain, the sunshone, possibly a little too hot for the widevariety of fancy dress costumes –superheroes, grapes, furry animals, bananas, smurfs, sailors, and an assortment of the bizarre andspectacular running along the North DownsWay – but nobody complained. This great yearof Surrey sporting activity was embraced byall. The atmosphere was happy, relaxed andtranquil with hundreds of spectators enjoyingthe balmy September sun.

Back to the serious challenge, approx. 1,000runners made their way through the stunningSurrey Hills, water and wine stationssupporting them on their route (marathon 26.2miles or half 13.1 miles) Participants crossedthe finishing line to receive a medal, t-shirt,hog roast and a glass of wine to celebrate!

Nicky Donbavand, ManagingDirector of Events to Live sent outhuge thanks to all of theirsupporters and volunteer marshalswho make it possible for the eventto take place. Thanks also go outto sponsors Powerbar UK for onceagain providing gels at the waterstations, Run to Live shop (prizes);Hilly Socks (spot prizes); ShockAbsorber (spot prizes) and Asics UK(marshal bibs and mile markers).

With increased interest fromoverseas entries, the eventcontinues to grow and will becomea significant fixture in the Surrey

Ashtead volunteers were delighted to supportlocal charity, Through the Roof, as part of

their unique Wheels for the World project nearthe Olympic Park, on Tuesday 4 September. Overthe two-day wheelchair distribution the team, including volunteer therapists, administrators, photographers, techies, and pastors, saw 49people from 26 countries – both Paralympicathletes and their team supporters - giving outchairs, crutches and rollators plus repairing andtuning up several damaged chairs. This againhighlighted the desperate need for wheelchairs indeveloping countries.

The gift of a chair improved the independence ofmany of the beneficiaries, including Mary, a Paralympic athlete from Kenya, who competes indiscus, shot-put and javelin. She had polio at the age of 3 and makes her living selling goods at theroadside in Nairobi. Even getting to her training depends on inconsistent transportation, and hernew wheelchair will mean she’s able to work and get to her coaching much more easily.

St John's Church, Stratford, kindly hosted the project, welcoming everyone who came. “We werealso joined by two prison officers from the Parkhurst Prison workshop, who came to offer theirhelp where needed and saw how the hard work of the prisoners makes a real difference. I wasimpressed by the quality of the refurbishment!” says Karen Goodridge, Volunteer CommunityFundraiser. “It was both a joyand a great privilege to take partin this extraordinary distribution.I even got a chance to try out myschool French!”

Our next distribution will bebetween 14-24 November toNyeri, Kenya. Please pray for theteam as they prepare for the tripand for the provision of muchneeded children’s wheelchairs.

Walk to D’Feet MNDOn Sunday 2nd September, around two dozen membersand supporters of the East Surrey Branch of the MotorNeurone Disease Association took part in the Branch'sannual 'Walk to D'Feet MND' sponsored walk along thenumerous paths around Box Hill. Despite the slightlyinclement weather (and the numerous cyclists now tryingto complete their own Olympic cycle race!), everyonepresent completed their chosen routes, which variedbetween one mile and six miles, and made it back to basein good time for a hot drink and bacon butty from theNational Trust café!

It is hoped that, once all the sponsor money has beencollected, around £1,500 will have been raised for the Branch, which will help them continuetheir vital support to local people living with Motor Neurone Disease.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive terminal condition that kills five peopleevery day in the UK. It can often leave people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves. Averagelife expectancy from diagnosis is just fourteen months and, as yet, there is no cure or effectivetreatment. The East Surrey Branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association provides care andsupport to around sixty people living with MND throughout the East Surrey area, as well as fundingvital research into the disease itself.

For further information about Motor Neurone Disease and the work of the MND Association pleasevisit www.mndassociation.org or contact Simon Edmands (East Surrey Branch Chairman) on 07753821964 or [email protected]

Enjoy Some Tulip-maniaBy Pippa Greenwood

Tulips are amazingly good value and have thepotential to transform your flower beds andtubs next spring with their silken-petalled,strikingly coloured blooms.

Late PlantingTulip bulbs are best planted from the last halfof October and well in to November. Plant tooearly and the bulbs will be far more prone todamage by the fungal ‘tulip fire’ disease whichwrecks the leaves and flowers.

Gritty BedIf your garden soil is inclined to be clay andrather heavy, tulips may suffer and arecertainly less likely to come back after theirfirst wet winter. A heavy loam works well butanything that isn’t well drained may causeproblems. You can solve this to a good extentby digging an extra large planting hole andputting an inch or two of horticultural gravelor grit in the base of the hole before plantingthe bulb. Don’t use grit or gravel left overfrom the local building site, as this oftencontains salts and other contaminants whichmay harm or kill garden plants.

Contained ColourTulips make great plants for containers such aswindow boxes, tubs and decent-sized pots andplanters. Shorter varieties generally look best(check the front of the pack or catalogue forheights). Good drainage is essential so makesure that there are plenty of crocks in thebase of the container and that it’s wellsupplied with drainage holes. Try either aloam-free multi-purpose compost or mix 50:50a loam-based compost and a bit of added grit.

Fantastic FoliageMany tulips also have good looking foliagewhich can help to bring colour and texture toyour pots and beds. Try the Kaufmannianatypes such as ‘Johann Strauss’(dark redflowers with yellow edges and mottled leaves),or even better the Greigii type tulips which allhave maroon patterning on the leaves, such as‘Red Riding Hood’ (richest red with black).

Tulip PartnersRichest red tulips surrounded by a mist of paleblue forget-me-nots are dreamily pretty. Thiswonderful combination is easy to achieve; youcan sow the forget-me-not seed now, as you

plant the bulbs, or if you prefer sow themearly in the year, just before the bulbsemerge. The display you achieve will bebreathtakingly beautiful.

Long-lived LoveliesIn most gardens tulips are not the longestliving bulbs, however you can always trygrowing the so-called species tulips such asTulipa sprengeri or Tulipa turkestanica. Theyhave smaller, less-showy flowers and will beconsiderably more expensive initially butthey look gorgeous, tend to last longer and, better still, also spread extensively in theright spot. After a few years a carpet ofspecies tulips can be achieved, and will takeyour breath away.

Good CompanionsTulips look great with each other. Trycombining the richly purple-black leavedPittosporum ‘Tom Thumb’ with any purpletulip such as ‘Passionale’, or for a wackiereffect chose one of the frilly petalled parrot-tulips with green streaks on their petals, orthe green ‘spring green’ tulip, combinedwith any low-growing shrub.

Now is the best time of year to think tulips -start planting and transform your garden forspring.

Today the premises known asRentwood derives its namefrom its previous occupiersRentokil Limited, specialists inthe manufacture of WoodPreservatives and Insecticides, who were there from 1946 to1964.

In 1924 Harold Maxwell-Lefroy,Professor of entomology atImperial College, London, whohad been investigating ways tokill death watch beetles thathad infested Westminster Hall, next door to the Houses ofParliament. Lefroy and hisassistant produced an anti-woodworm fluid called Ento-

Kill Fluids from a small factory in Hatton Garden, “ento” came from the Latin name forinsect. In 1925 he tried to register the name Entokill, but had to choose Rentokil Limitedinstead. On 14 October 1925, Lefroy was killed in a laboratory when an experimentproduced poisonous fumes. His assistant, Elizabeth Eades, took over the running of thecompany.

In 1944 Dr Norman Hickin joinedRentokil Limited as an entomologist; helived at Home Farm, The Street,Fetcham for many years. He started aservicing section which becameWoodworm and Dry Rot Control Ltd in1952. The Company was bought in1957 by British Ratin, and in 1960British Ratin became Rentokil Group.

The factory was damaged by fire in1963 and in 1964 it was announced thatRentokil were to close their factorywhich employs about 70 people andmove it to Liverpool. LUDC acquired

the freehold of the land for £47,000 and extinguished the industrial use of the site. Thepremises were then sold to the Surrey County Council for use by their Social ServicesDepartment and also to house an office for the Surrey Voluntary Association for the Blind.

Transition AshteadWorking towards sustainable consumption

Transport yourself to a greener world

Someone told me recently that in America ifyou are walking in your neighbourhood,

people will stop their cars and ask if you areOK – because nobody walks in the States, everybody drives everywhere. Back in the UK,there was a report that said 10% of childrenliving within 500m of school are taken by carand a third of children who get a lift toschool live less than a mile away. I don’tknow if these things are true but it made mewonder how far the ‘journey’ has to be for usto jump in the car rather than onto Shank’s

pony. A common reason for driving is pressure of time…but times change, don’tthey? When I was at school, it was really rare to do anything other than walk or cycle,

no-one was driven to school. There has been a gradual increase in the use of cars for yearsand now it’s the new ‘norm’ to use them for even the shortest journeys.

But times are changing again – and there are three major things that are prompting us tothink again about our transport habits – we are gaining weight and losing fitness; the planetis struggling to cope with our polluting ways and thirdly, financial - the ever rising cost offuel. These things are connected! Simply adding some walking or cycling into your dailyroutine gives huge benefits to all of these. The government is also recognising the benefitsand is offering financial incentives to cycle to work by backing a company cycle loanscheme. There are about 4 million people who commute less than 3 miles by car to work sothere is a lot of potential for getting cars off the roads in the rush hour.

Most of us use cars and will continue to do so but there are many ways to minimise thecarbon footprint of driving. A big one is to hang on to your car for longer. Producing amedium-sized new car costing £24,000 may generate more than 17 tonnes of CO2 – almostas much as three years' worth of gas and electricity in the typical UK home. This ‘embeddedfootprint’ incurred during manufacture is a hidden but very real part of a car’s total lifeemissions. It makes a lot of sense financially too - drivers who buy a car new and then tradeit in after three years incur a cost of as much as 50% in depreciation. Years ago, carsbecame very unreliable as they got older but modern cars last much longer before they givemuch trouble. We have an ancient VW estate car with over 220,000 miles on the clock andit still drives very nicely! The manner of driving can also cut fuel consumption – smoothacceleration, good anticipation, minimising junk (ie weight) in the boot , switching off theengine in traffic jams etc all help to keep down the cost and emissions of motoring.

…But the easiest way to cut down on emissions is to take a walk or cycle to a greener worldwhenever you can...

Our next meeting will have a transport theme with a speaker and short film. Thursday 11thOctober. Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, 7:30pm.
