II always find the start of a New Year really strange, why? Rememberwhat it’s like to return to work after a summer holiday and how difficultit is to get back into the routine of work? Well, I think it’s the same in

the New Year, but on a nationwide scale. It seems to be days into January beforethe sparkle and excitement of the Christmas break wears off. Hey ho, still gettingto used it after umpteen years of work.

Lots of lovely articles have been sent in to me for the January magazine, one of which is a ‘thankyou’ from Dr Marian Guess for your kind donations towards Dementia Care (p.32); the AshteadPeace Memorial Hall needs help with its refurbishment plans (p.42); the SurreySave Credit Unionbank is going great guns (p.44); I am again running the piece on Stephen Wagland, one of ourfuture Paralympians, please do what you can to help (p.20).

As this magazine starts its distribution slightly before Christmas, I am featuring the ChristmasFestival reports for Leatherhead (p.36), Ashtead (p.14) and Fetcham (p.60), where a great deal offun was had by all. There’s an update from Brian Griffin on all the wonderful support the AshteadRotary Club give to local charities and organisations (p.88).

I was approached by the Mid Surrey Mediation Service to feature a piece about their work in thecommunity and, unfortunately, if you are experiencing some angst with your neighbours, then takea look at the article, they may be able to help (p.72). Surrey Police are looking to put morebobbies on the beat and they are also clamping down on anti-social driving, all is explained on theMole Valley Police Column on page 94.

You may have noticed that some of the SAS retailers areparticipating in a free monthly prize draw and one luckywinner will receive a £100 voucher to spend in a selection ofsome, or all, of the participating retailers. Please pop intoone of the local shops where you see the SAS logo (above) andcomplete your slip to enter the draw. No purchase isnecessary.

Finally, a warm welcome to new and returning advertisers thismonth: Grab-the-lead, a great dog-walking service (p.19);Cairds, the new estate agent in Ashtead village (p.9);Walkabout, a specialist outdoor sports clothing store in Epsom(p.21); M&M Strictly Ballroom, dance teachers (p.63); EpsomCoaches (p.17); Caroline Litman (p.40) and Annabel Parkin(p.53) both Pilates teachers; Exercise Outdoors (p.55); ManorHouse School and MAD Academy for thelittle ones, (p.61); Curves (p.41); FourSeasons Blinds based in Epsom (p.19)and Planters to the right.

Just a reminder that MeredithWorsfold’s collection of stories aboutAshtead village, entitled Meredith’sMemories, is available to purchase fromthe Post Offices in Ashtead Village and Barnett Wood Lane, aswell as Bumbles in The Street and Barton’s in Leatherhead.

Why Cairds? Why Ashtead?Cairds Estate Agents are the proud new tenants of 35 The Street. Anexperienced five-strong team will be led by their Managing Director, PaulAboud.

Having spent the last four years at the coal face in the Epsom market, Paulknows the value of the Cairds brand and his aim will be to replicate thesuccess the brand has had in Epsom.

“Cairds have become the first call for most sellers. The company hasestablished a huge client base for repeat business. High levels of service andmarketing has raised standards. The fresh approach of this company and itsstaff will add new value to Ashtead.”

“Ashtead has been calling”, says Paul. “We havebeen, and currently are, successfully sellingAshtead properties. To meet this growing demandwe have opened a first class office with first classstaff, displays and position.” Cairds (Ashtead) isthe logical expansion of Epsom’s leading estateagent.

Just as Cairds brought a fresh approach to Epsomin 1994, Cairds (Ashtead) will do the same for Ashtead residents and thoseplanning to move to the area.

“Working together within the community will be at the heart of our success”says Paul, “I recognise the importance of property sales in people’s lives.Financially and emotionally this is almost always a memorable moment. Irelish the chance to perform.”

The Ashtead Village late nightshopping evening was a huge success.

Despite the odd shower it was packed withpeople and there was a very festiveatmosphere. As well as the side shows, rides, popcorn and candyfloss we had facepainting free of charge in The FramingWorkshop which was extremely popular, pony and trap rides, Santa's grotto, a BBQ,and a hog roast.

We were delighted to have West Ashteadand Freemans school choirs and the Parishchoir who all put on wonderfulperformances which really enhanced theevening. The traders did a fabulous job ofoffering great hospitality to all customerswith drinks and nibbles as well as luckydips etc. for the children.

The evening ended with the free raffledraw which had excellent prizes donatedby various shops. The 1st prize being a

£300 voucher from Milner Carpets, 2ndprize was a luxury hamper from AshteadFruiterers and 3rd prize a fabulous speakersystem from Ashtead Computer Services. The traders would like to thank all thosewho attended and helped make theevening the success it was.

There has recently been great local interest inTesco’s second application to redevelop theold Esso site. I have the impression that viewshave become somewhat polarised. This isunfortunate and I suspect a consequence ofthe complexity of the issues and uncertaintyon some key concerns.

It seems however that residents haveconcluded that Tesco will have a presence onThe Street, partly because of theGovernment’s continued delay in implementingthe Competition Test recommended by theCompetition Commission.

There remain widespread and variedconcerns about the applications made. Thesecond application, despite showing someimprovements, has the same underlyingproblems as the first one and fails to takesufficient account of the unusual features andlimitations of the site.

It seems to me that there is potential for anacceptable outcome for all concerned. Theobstacles to achieving it however areconsiderable as is the resulting challenge.Where might there be common ground?• Tesco owns the site and is a highlysuccessful retailer. Tesco operating in theStreet could attract more people to theVillage and increase activity generally at atime when trade is increasingly gravitatingto superstores, neighbouring towns and theinternet.

• The Street needs additional investment andtrade. The viability of independentretailers is already under threat.

• Car parking provision in the Village isseverely restricted and has to handle arange of needs, in particular those of APMHusers. There is little scope for more streetparking in the immediate vicinity, which isalready a problem

• The Woodfield Lane/A24 junction is a verylong standing cause of concern, for whichthere is no easy solution.

It seems to me that there could be a “win”for everybody if a smaller store were to be

built and steps were taken to ensure that theneeds of APMH users can continue to be met.Tesco will naturally seek to maximise thereturn on its investment. That is themanagement’s duty to the company’sshareholders.

To achieve this, strong local opposition tothe current proposals is essential. Tescomight then in time be forced to reduce itsrequests to a viable level for this site.

The Councillors who comprise Mole Valley’sDevelopment Control Committee have anonerous responsibility. They are due to makea decision on February 3rd and face manypressures. These include direct pressure tpachieve Government targets and indirectpressures as a consequence of the severefinancial constraints faced by Mole Valley. Many of these Councillors are not local toAshtead and are consequently challenged tounderstand the specific circumstances of thissite. Your views could therefore be veryimportant to help them to reach a balancedand informed decision.

In my opinion there is an opportunity todevelop a solution which can improve theretail environment at the heart of Ashteadwhilst maintaining its essential character andamenities. Achieving that will be challenging.

There is still time to write expressing yourviews. You can do so right up to Feb 3rd. Ifyou have not already done so, I urge you togive your views to Mole Valley Planning andyour local Councillors before it is too late.

The good news first: several kingfishershave been seen on the River Molebetween the Town Bridge andThorncroft Bridge. This welcome pieceof information was given out at theLeatherhead Residents’ Associationsocial evening last Monday. There hadbeen a lot of worry over these birdswhile the River Path and an adjacentoffice block were being built.

Sometime in the New Year, however, many of the town’s roads are due foryellow paint, some for a considerableamount of yellow paint. In some casesthis will be extremely welcome – theEpsom Road must be an example of this, but in other cases many residents areunhappy with the proposals. However, the numbers actually writing in toobject were not sufficient for thecouncil to alter the plans. Conversely,it was noted that even when virtuallythe whole road wrote in to request oneplan, because it was not one of thecouncil’s recommended solutions, it wasnot accepted. It will be veryinteresting, on Day 1, to see how quickly

the other, neighbouring roadsfill up. Homelands, Fortyfoot,Melvinshaw, Daymerslea Ridge, OaksClose all look set to receiveunprecedented numbers of earlyvisitors. Being early will be the keyfactor in obtaining a free parking place;after 6.30 am it will almost certainly beimpossible. Residents of KingstonRoad, Park Rise and Windfield are goingto have to be extremely careful andremove their cars during the “ForbiddenHour” or they are likely to findsummonses attached the windscreens oftheir own cars right outside their ownhomes.

Lastly, hopes for a third lane the wholelength of Station Approach between thebridges have been dashed. This wouldhave involved the dismantling of the oldstaircase access and a costly roadwidening scheme. Instead, just thescaffolding is to be removed revealingthe old brick retaining wall.

Cataracticus - nonsense! There’s no suchword. Ah yes there is, I have just inventedit. A juxtaposition of similar soundingwords with a linked meaning. CACTUS - asucculent plant, from the Latin succus -juicy. CATARACT - a rush of water, well, the eyes do water don’t they? Floods oftears etc., and if that is not sufficient, furtherdrops may be medically subscribed. As forCARACTICUS the British Chieftan whofought the Romans in the 1st Century, I amnot sure about the watery link, but his namedoes provide 10 letters of the 12 whichconstitute this page title. You may well bewondering what all these meanderings areleading up to (and probably not for the firsttime in Meredith’s Memories). If myheading had been CATARACT youperhaps would have read no further. Whowants to read about ophthalmic surgery. Please read on, you may be surprised.

I am writing these notes just a few days aftermy cataract operation at Epsom hospital on23rd June 2009, and I know that events onthat day will remain vividly in my memoryfor the rest of my days. I had beenreassured so many times of the ease andlack of stress in this particular procedure, and I had no qualms. Zero hour came andI was wheeled through a zig-zag of corridorsto the theatre where I was welcomed by thesurgeon and her team. I was given atranquilising injection and more eye-dropsas a local anaesthetic. I was eased back intoa prone position and told to relax and makemyself comfortable.

Then began my wonderful experience, fantasy is not the word - this was noimaginative fiction. I was fully consciousduring the whole operation. The first stepwas to have a cover placed over my upper

face which produced not darkness but aluminous blue background with little blobsof white like clouds in a blue sky. Therewas a soft soothing background ofmurmuring voices, unintelligible, as the jobproceeded. There was not an iota of painor discomfort during the operation, just anoverall sense of tranquillity ad wellbeing. Finally, the cover was removed from myface, an eye shield fitted and I was wheeledback to the ward. Straight away I was easedoff my trolley, walked to a chair and wasserved with tea and biscuits. My ‘AshteadGood Neighbours’ driver was there, readyfor my return and after a few minutespaperwork checking out, back to Ashtead.

One other extraordinary event in this storyhappened the next morning when I firstremoved the shield covering my repairedeye. I was dumbstruck! The post-opinformation states that eyesight will improveslowly over the next few weeks. Now inthose first few expectant moments theclarity of vision and the richness of colourswere incredible. I had forgotten what myvision had been like years ago. What hadbeen my good left eye was now inferior tomy renovated right eye. Instanttransformation!

I must close before you tire of my eulogyand I am running out of superlatives. Myfinal words are an expression of sinceregratitude to everyone who was involved inmy cataract operation.

I hope Cataracticusconveys to you somethingof my feelings of Joy andExhilaration.

As Ruth and Sam stood at the door, their smileswere genuine enough. They loved their familyand they loved Christmas, but the prospect ofnormality fuelled their enthusiastic waving astheir last guest drove out of sight. They closedthe front door, turned to each other andbreathed a sigh of relief. The house was a messand the carpet was embedded with pineneedles. Empty bottles and black bags ofdetritus lined the garage waiting for absent binmen. An exhausted Ruth collapsed onto thesofa. Christmas was over.

All things considered, they had enjoyed thefestivities. Their presents had been wellreceived, the turkey was moist and the breadsauce had been a success. The children hadn’tfought too much and Sam had been surprisinglyhelpful.

Two presents heading straight to the charityshop were a bizarre wine bottle ‘cosy’ and a2000 piece jigsaw puzzle depicting a plate ofbaked beans. Also, Ruth’s friend Clare delightedin buying her clothes that were several sizes toosmall. Ruth couldn’t decide whether beinggiven a size eight jumper was a compliment or apointed statement from her ‘size eight’ friend.Ruth’s tomboy daughter, Sarah, had been sent adelicate, pink party dress, which was greetedwith the contempt of a child who had to bebribed to wear a denim skirt.

Ruth’s mother in law always considered her giftsvery carefully. She thrived on appreciation andprice tags were often left on display to illustrateher generosity. Barbara was an exactinghouseguest and her ‘well meaning’ householdand catering tips followed Ruth around thehouse.

This year, Barbara gave Ruth a cashmerejumper. It came from a well-known store andshould have been perfect. Unfortunately, it wasa rather unpleasant shade of sage green. Ruthhated the colour and planned a gracious thankyou letter and a prompt visit to exchange thegift. This was a risky strategy as presents fromBarbara were always closely monitored. However, Ruth had no intention of wearing sagegreen and couldn’t bear the thought of thebeautifully soft fabric taunting her from hersweater drawer.Early the following day, she drove to Epsom andjoined the queue of ‘present returners’. Afterhalf an hour, she reached an exhausted salesassistant and optimistically tried to get a refundwithout a receipt. This of course wasn’tpossible but there were several of the jumpersleft in the sale section of the store and if Ruth

could find a colour she preferred, she couldmake a direct exchange.

Ruth raced to join the scrum of cashmerebargain hunters and fought her way to araspberry pink V-neck in a size twelve. Just asshe was about to pounce, a ‘larger than sizetwelve’ lady grabbed the jumper and added it tothe heap of cashmere in her basket. Ruth triedto protest but was greeted by the non-negotiable determination of a seasoned hunter.

Ruth managed to locate one in royal blue but asit was a size twenty, she reluctantly returned itto the scrum. She rummaged through all thesage green jumpers that littered the table andsuddenly spotted the edge of a powder bluesleeve. She grabbed it and weaved the jumperthrough a row of shoppers as she pulled ittowards her. It was V necked and a size twelve.Perfect.

Ruth returned to customer services and afteranother long wait, finally exchanged her sagegreen jumper for the blue one.

Sam had been very nervous of her decision toswap his mother’s present, but acknowledgedthat its replacement suited her far better. However, just as Ruth was admiring herself inthe bedroom mirror, the phone rang. It wasBarbara.

“Hello, dear. Thank you so much for having meyesterday. I think we put on quite a goodspread, don’t you? It was my pleasure to helpyou so much, dear. I know you struggle. Now,the real reason for my telephone call is to talkabout that beautiful jumper I bought you. I didactually buy one for myself, in a lovely shade ofbeige. However, I think the sage green colourwould suit me much better and I’m sure thebeige would look better on you. The greencolour made you look a bit ‘shadow eyed’, don’tyou think? Anyway, I thought I would pop overthis afternoon and swap the jumpers over. I’llbe with you at about four o’clock, in time fortea and one of those lovely mince pies we made.Bye dear, see you then.”

As I grabbed my coat and headed for the door, Icalled out to Sam. “Just going back to Epsom, back by three thirty... You better tidy up, yourmother’s coming...”

A big thank you from Dr Marian GuessI have just returned from an amazing five days of trekking and camping in themountains of the Sinai Desert in Egypt in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. You may remember my ‘name the camel’ stall at Ashtead Village Day in June and myphotographic exhibition in September both in aid of this sponsored trek.

I was trekking with 47 other people all of whom had raised money for the Alzheimer’sSociety. It was a wonderful group and we were well supported by the local teamincluding our six camels.

The trek was quite a challenge and I thought of all my sponsors at times to keep megoing! We climbed Mount Sinai, a three hour climb in the dark after just 2 hours sleep,to see a vibrant sunrise. The scenery generally was mountainous and spectacular and Ifelt very privileged to be there. I was elated to find I was fit enough to reach the finishfit and well!

I am enormously grateful to everyone who supported meincluding Ashtead Rotary who helped with my Village Day stalland publicity for my exhibitions.

Dementia is a devastating disease on the increase. If you would like to support me, please visitwww.justgiving.com/marianguess or phone 01372273680 for information about how to donate.

This year’s Leatherhead Christmas Festival wasonce again a huge success. Hundreds turnedout on Saturday 5th December to enjoy thefestivities. Children and adults alike wereenthralled by the antics of Jack Frost and theSnow Queen as she towered above the crowds.Balloonatic also kept the children amused withclose up balloon modelling and plenty of fun.Live music was provided by talented localartists Allan Bailey and Natalie Keel who sanghits from the 60’s right through to the presentday. The Ewell St Mary Morris Dancers broughta splash of colour to the day with fourenergetic performances and Pantastic steel

pans warmed up proceedings by bringing thesound of the Caribbean to Leatherhead. As theevening started to draw in the Mole ValleySilver Band was the perfect accompaniment tothe Traditional Carol Concert and this year thetree lights were switched on by the cast ofRobinson Crusoe Leatherhead theatre’sPantomime.

Santa and his elves were kept extremely busyin his grotto, located in the Theatre. Lots ofchildren came to see him, told him exactlywhat they would like for Christmas andreceived a little something direct from Santahimself. The animals of Mill Cottage FarmExperience proved a huge hit with plenty offamilies taking pictures of the various animalsincluding sheep, goats, turkeys, piglets andrabbits to name but a few and asking lots ofquestions.

The Leatherhead Festival Committee wouldlike to thank all those who took part andhelped out to make the Christmas Festival thesuccess it was and especially the traders whopurchased Christmas Trees!

W A M‘Where Ashtead Meets’

Ashtead Peace Memorial HallRegistered Charity Number 304968

Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall is more than 80 years old, there have been many changes andadditions to make it into the successful Hall we have today.

The history of the Hall by Meredith Worsfold, a long time resident of Ashtead, shows what avaluable asset the Hall has been over the years to the residents of Ashtead, truly a place

WHERE ASHTEAD MEETS

Now the Trustees feel the time is right to bring the Hall into the 21st century for the benefitof present residents and the generations of the future.

The plan is to improve the toilet facilities, storage and the office, and to enlarge the size oftwo of the meeting rooms and the Bar. The approved plans are on display in the foyer of theHall for all to see.

This of course will cost money and this is where the residents can help and contribute toyour own Village Hall.

We have approximately 5000 homes in Ashtead and if each gave £5.00 it would go a longway towards the funds we need for the improvements.

If you would like to help with this exciting project your donation will be invaluable.Whatever the size of your gift it will help to maintain the Hall to a high standard, a buildingAshtead can be proud of for the 21st century.

If you would like to donate, please complete the slip at the bottom of this page send yourdonation to: The APMH, Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, KT21 2BEThank you.

Members of the SurreySave steeringgroup have taken another stepforward yesterday, by publishing

their Investment Prospectus. This isdesigned to show the advantages ofinvesting in the Credit Union, for localauthorities, housing associations, privatecompanies and, of course, individuals. Thesavings from the SurreySave Credit Unionwill provide a pool of funds from which low-cost, flexible loans can be maderesponsibly.

A task force comprising localrepresentatives from Guildford, Waverleyand Woking Borough Councils, Mole ValleyHousing Association, the Co-operativeFund, the CAB and voluntary services meetregularly to work on setting up the CreditUnion.

Cllr David Wright, Chair of the SteeringGroup, says: “SurreySave Credit Union willbe a competitive, convenient and safe wayfor everyone in Surrey to save and borrowas an alternative to traditional banking. Aswell as encouraging saving, it will keepmoney circulating within the local area, provide advice and support to members andit will have no private shareholders”.

Heather Ward from Leatherhead says, “Thisis a good time to be setting up a creditunion. For those able to save, a creditunion, which is a not-for-profitorganisation, is an ethical and safe homefor their money. We know that some localpeople, on the other hand, are in theclutches of home credit companies, loansharks and money shops that charge aminimum of 183% APR, and SurreySave willhelp them organise their finances betterand have access to secure bankingservices.”

Regulated by the Financial ServicesAuthority (FSA), a credit union is run as afinancial, self-help co-operative that isowned and controlled by its members, whoboth save and borrow from it. Any profitsthat are left over after running costs havebeen covered are paid to its saving

members in the form of a dividend orinterest on their savings.

Permaculture –Earth Care, People Care and Fair SharesIt’s not often you get to meet a real enthusiast but I did this week. It was atthe most recent Transition Ashtead Open meeting, where the topic wasPermaculture. The enthusiastic speaker was Phil Howard, a communityoutreach consultant for Emerson College in Forest Row, East Sussex and also afriend of Barry, our Chairman. Phil enjoys travelling around south-east Englandto spread the word about Permaculture. One of the phraseshe used in his talk stuck in my mind – that we are ‘robbing our

grand children to feed our children’. An odd idea, you may think, but I know what he means. If we don’t become good stewards of theworld, even though we are all rushing around doing what we think needsto be done to keep the wheels of our lives turning, we are in danger ofleaving a real mess behind for future generations. This idea of caring forthe land is the core idea of Permaculture. Phil explained that theprinciples of permaculture have developed into a philosophy, where‘careful thought is followed by minimal action, rather than hasty actionfollowed by long-term regrets’. Not a bad modus operandi! The firstthing to do is stand back, observe and then interact with your garden. He talked about compost being ‘good for the soul’, being consistentwith a no-waste approach to horticulture, where all rubbish is recycledback into the soil, to enrich it, aiding water retention and holding nutrients where plantscan use them. The soil should never be left bare, so when crops have been harvested, ifthere is no follow-on crop to plant immediately, you can sow “green manure”, which areplants that can catch and store energy and nutrients, and be dug back into the soil beforeplanting the next crop. Permaculture values the diversity of nature and aims to mimic themixed planting that arises in nature, to maximise the use of the land area and reduce theimpact of pests and diseases; so plant your fruit bushes around fruit trees, grow tomatoeson your patio and nasturtiums near the broad beans to lure the black flies away! Mix it allup and integrate your veg patch with the rest of the garden. Phil has offered to organise a‘hands on’ Permaculture training day or weekend to get you started, either here inAshtead or in Sussex, so let us know if that would appeal to you and we’ll get it organised.

It was good to be able to welcome Graeme Kane, the Sustainability Manager for MoleValley, to the meeting, as well as people from Leatherhead, Epsom and Ashtead. Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? NO! It’s Kapilan!“As the newest member I am excited to be adding a new dimension to an already incredibleteam at the RJ Osteopathic Clinic.

My interest in osteopathy had grown from benefiting myself from osteopathic treatment, whilst playing sport at a representative level. So it is no surprise that I have homed theskills I acquired, in my degree from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, to assist inreturning individuals to the best shape to tackle whatever physical demands they place onthemselves.

Sport can be involvement in teams in a competitive arena to playing with the kids in theback garden. Either way it is important to feel comfortable and capable of taking the stressand strains in these situations. With my experience in physically demanding situations I amable to incorporate my understanding of anatomy and diagnosis toensure movement is restored and performance enhanced.

I would say my success would lie in my ability to recognise each andeveryone’s limits and encourage the body to function at its optimumlevel. I have a very direct structural approach, whilst incorporatingsoft tissue, hydrotherapy and body mechanics to treat each caseeffectively.

I look forward to the challenges each patient presents at the clinic, but am further looking forward helping each and everyone return todoing what they love to do the most.”

1. Preheat oven to 150ºC/300ºF/gas 2. Toss the meatinto the well-seasoned flour, ensuring that it is wellcoated. Shake off any excess and brown the meat invegetable oil in batches, frying in a single layer in aheavy bottom pan. Remove each batch to a plate asyou go, adding more oil if you need to.

2. Now start frying the onions in more oil, adding alittle salt at the outset so that they begin to releasetheir juices; then add all the vegetables one by onein the given order, sautéing them gently until theonions have begun to soften and turn translucent.

3. Return the meat to the pan and add the wine in twoor three bursts, waiting for it to reach simmeringpoint before you add the next slug.

4. When all the wine has begun to simmer, pour in thetomatoes. The meat and vegetables should bepretty well covered by now. Season with salt andpepper and, when the stew comes back to asimmer, tuck in the bouquet.

5. Cut out a sheet of greaseproof to fit on top of thestew in the pan and cover with a lid. Place in theoven and gently cook for three hours.

6. Prepare parsley and horseradish dumplings (seeoverleaf) in time to cook them on top of the stewfor the last 20 minutes of cooking time.

One of the great Italian classics, paired here an equally greatBritish classic - the dumpling.Flecked with parsley and ahidden hit of hot horseradish, yum. Serve with lovely butterymash. If Barolo is beyond yourpocket, opt for a full-bodied,robust red wine. This stew isalways better the second day,so leave it overnight if you canand reheat the next day.Serves 8Preparation time 30 mins, cooking time 3 hours.

Trouble with your Neighbours? One of the organisations that Mole Valley DistrictCouncil helps to fund is the Mid Surrey MediationService. In these days of rushed, busy lives andfrequent moves it’s not surprising that difficultiessometimes arise in relationships with neighbours. These disputes can escalate and takeover people’s lives causing great distress, sometimes affecting health and well- being.

The Mid-Surrey Mediation Service aims to sort things out before the problems escalate. Ourtrained mediators listen to both sides of the story and chart a path to peace.Boundary disputes, high hedges, noise, parking problems, and children and pets runningamok are among issues which commonly set neighbours at odds. But the group says theinvolvement of an "outsider" can defuse the tensions. By seeing things with a fresh eye, wecan get neighbours talking and help them come to a satisfactory agreement. "We try tonegotiate a way forward that will be beneficial to both parties. We are free, confidential, impartial, and non-judgemental, encouraging people to find their own solutions," said SarahParry of the group, which is staffed by a dedicated band of volunteers

"We are always looking for new recruits with an interest in people, good communicationskills, and a desire to make the community in which they live a safer and pleasanter place."

Volunteers are given training, and anyone interested in joiningcan contact Sarah on [email protected]

or telephone on 07513 524241 for more information.

Downside – Downs Lane, LeatherheadThe house was built in 1860 for William Lee, but it was Alfred Tate who lived therefrom about 1888 who improved and emphasised its Italian aspect. He was from thefamily of sugar merchants, Tate & Lyle. Tate was a gardening enthusiast and hisrose gardens were described at the time as one of the finest in the district. AlfredTate committed suicide during a bout of depression in 1913, shortly after a seriousthroat operation.

In 1919 it was bought by Sir Edward Hulton the British newspaper publisher andthoroughbred racehorse owner. He founded the Daily Sketch in 1909. He was theBritish flat racing Champion Owner in 1916. That year his wins included the fillyFifinella capturing the Epsom Oaks and the Epsom Derby, the last horse to everaccomplish that feat. In 1923 Leatherhead’s Roman Catholic Church in GarlandsRoad was built, thanks to the generosity of Sir Edward. He died at Downside on the23rd May 1925. The next day his body was brought to the gates of "his church", for ashort service of blessing on its way to London. His son, also named Edward, wasraised at Downside. He founded the Hulton Press in 1937. The Hulton Press went onto publish Leader Magazine, Eagle and Girl for childen, Lilliput and the Picture Post.Hulton discontinued the Picture Post in 1957, and sold the Hulton Press to Odhamstwo years later.

In 1934 the house was sold to Major. E. Howard.

Thoughts for the New Year...An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.Don’t just think about that course...do it!

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.Have faith; learn from your falls and keep going...

Be who you are, and say what you feel. Because those who mind, don’t matterand those who matter don’t mind.Being true to who you are is the cornerstone to a happy person.

Goals that are written down are not just wishes.Go on, bring your goals to life, write them down and take action!

Worrying is like a rocking chair; it gives you something to do, but doesn’tactually get you anywhere.Decide how much time something is worth worrying over and refuse to give it more.

Forget about the people in your past; they are not in your future for a reason.Don’t dwell on the past. Learn from it and then move on.

The steeper the mountain, the harder the climb, the better the view from thefinishing line.Do not be put off by a seemingly insurmountable task. The reward will make the effortall the more worthwhile.

People will not remember what you said or how you said it; they will rememberhow you made them feel.A genuine smile will be remembered long after words have been forgotten.

Make 2010 the year in which you choose; to make positive changes to your life, tostop worrying and start living, to work towards achieving your goals and to simplyenjoy who and what you are...

Working with a Coach provides the support, focus and encouragement tohelp you to keep going and to achieve.

Since Keith Allardyce assumed thepresidency last Summer from Tim Ashton,Rotarians have been as busy as ever withtheir speaker programme, social activitiesand donating to both local andinternational causes.

Most recently there has been support foryoung Ashtead Paralympic Dressagehopeful Stephen Wagland (featured inthis issue and the December magazine),involvement with the young mothers inthe Ashtead Recreation Campaign(helping them fundraise at the ‘Party inthe Park’ with a kiddies slide) and morerecently donating to the Alzheimer’sSociety in response to local doctor MarionGuess completing a gruelling fundraisingwalk in the Sinai Desert.

Another cause helped in response to amoving talk at the Thursday eveningRotary meetings included financialsupport for a local nurse and a teacherwho spent time helping Mumbai streetchildren in a project to give 400 kids onemeal a day from an old bus. A localdental surgeon Nigel Paget gives up histime to work on a ‘Mercy Ship’ moored inWest Africa, providing the only hope forpeople with acute medical and dentalproblems – Ashtead Rotary has supportedthis work along with many other local andinternational projects.

To take two further examples – the clubhas supported the Surrey Association forthe Visually Impaired (SAVI) and‘Crossroads’, a project helping children inSouth Africa.

November found Ashtead Rotary Clubbusy with a Gourmet Evening (no, it’s notjust a dining club – well not all of thetime!). Members were delighted to hearfrom local police officer PC Jason Woodsabout his fundraising work and histhoughts on policing the village ofAshtead.

December found the club busy withparticipation in the Traders’ Evening in

The Street and Rotary street collectionsin Craddocks Parade and Barnett WoodLane and ending the year with aChristmas Party with local band ‘Atlantis’and a President’s Christmas drinksreception. All this and a start has beenmade on planning Ashtead Village Day2010 – to be held on 12th June.

Looking ahead to 2010, a busy Springsocial programme starting with a Scottish‘Burns Evening’ on Thursday 28th Januaryat Tyrrell’s Wood GC (guests welcome),an Italian Evening with the Claudio AllodiBand on Friday 12th February to be heldin the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall andopen to everyone - tickets @ £25 fromRotary (see below) and an “Antiques RoadShow” to be held in the APMH on Monday8th March – bring along your ‘objets’ tobe valued by experts.... (held inconjunction with Rotary Club of Ewell, proceeds to joint charities).

To find out more about any of theseevents or to contact Rotary Club ofAshtead for more information about theclub please contact Keith Allardyce(01372 727573) or Brian Griffin (01372275860). Meetings are held on Thursdaysat Tyrrell’s Wood Golf Club.

An apple a day keeps thedoctor awayApples do contain vitaminsand fibre essential parts of ahealthy diet, but here is no

real medical support for this particularexpression which is believed to be of 19th

century origin. Although it is argued thatBenjamin Franklin used the expression acentury earlier. To be on skid row – to be heading fortroubleIn America where this phrase originates,‘skid row’ refers to the area of townpopulated with tramps, alcoholics etc.Someone said to be ‘on the skids’ wassupposedly heading for this part of town. Theterm ‘skid row’, probably comes from theSeattle timber industry many years ago. Arow of logs was used to slide the fallentimber down, and this row of logs was knownas the ‘skid row’. Towns associated with thetimber industry became prosperous and the

loggers were keen to spend their earnings inbrothels and buy alcohol. To send someone to Coventry – to ignoreor refuse to speak to someoneDuring the English Civil War ( 1642-1649) thecitizens of Coventry were reputed to have sostrong a dislike of the military that anywoman seen speaking to a soldier wasinstantly shunned by all. The city wasstrongly Protestant and pro-Parliament andimportant captured Royalists werefrequently ‘sent to Coventry’ forimprisonment and effectively into exile. To talk nineteen to the dozen – to talkquicklyConsidered to be taken literally from Cornishmines in the 18th century, when pumps wereintroduced to reduce the possibility offlooding. The pumps were ableto pump out 19,000 gallons ofwater for every 12 bushels ofcoal used to operate them.

Keen gardeners gain a great deal of pleasureand use from a greenhouse. Thisconstruction extends the growing season of

your garden and protects your precious pot-grown plants from the winter cold. It can beused for raising bedding plants from seed, rooting cuttings, overwintering semi-hardy andtender perennials or growing exotic fruit andvegetables.

Installing a greenhouse is not something tobe undertaken lightly as a lot of work is involvedin its upkeep. Daily watering, ventilation, insectmanagement, sunlight and temperature controland general maintenance make owning aglasshouse very labour intensive. It’s almost likeowning a pet, a big responsibility; who will beable to look after it during your holidays?

As tempting as it is to build one yourself, it ishighly recommended that you get a professionalin to erect it for you. It may seem like an easy,meccano-esque job, but you will regret it almostas soon as you start.

Choose the largest greenhouse you can affordand fit into your garden. Smaller greenhouses aremore difficult to maintain than larger ones as it’smuch harder to control temperature in aconfined area.

Wooden frames are the most attractive but

wood warps and rots after some years. Cheapsoft woods may only last five years whilehardwoods, such as teak, last longer but aren’tecologically sound and are very expensive.Galvanised steel is strong and durable, but doesrust eventually. PVC is a cheaper framingmaterial but it’s not very strong and deterioratesin sunlight. There is a special UV protected PVCwhich should last for around 20 years. Fibreglassframes are also available.

Aluminium is the most popular choice as it’slow maintenance and durable. Watch out forsteel screws and bolts though, as these will rust.

Glazing materials are the next option.Basically you choose between glass and plastic. The main drawbacks of plastics are their lack oftotal transparency and tendency to scratch. Theydiffuse light more than glass, so there’s lesschance of your plants being scorched. Plasticalso retains heat more efficiently and is lighterthan glass. Glass is great, but fragile, so if youhave children buy strengthened safety glass. It’salso heavy so you may need a foundation for alarge greenhouse. This is another reason fordealing with professional greenhouse companieswho will advise you which materials are best foryou.

Summer sun sends the temperature insideyour greenhouse soaring to amazing levels, soventilation and temporary shading are essential.Plan how to soften the sun’s glare during thesummer months as too much concentratedsunlight damages plants beyond rescue. Thecheapest method is to use a special windowpaint which you wipe off in the autumn.

Good ventilation is paramount to preventingmould and mildew building up in yourgreenhouse, so get many opening windows inthe roof and along the sides. Proper gutteringwill prevent dampness.

Heating your greenhouse is anotherconsideration. Most people have a coldgreenhouse with no heating. Once you startheating it, costs rocket but the range of plantsyou can grow increases. Again, this is somethingyou will need to research yourself depending onyour planting requirements. If you do decide toheat your greenhouse, then an electric fanheater is the best choice as it will circulate theair.

This is by no means a definitive article onchoosing a greenhouse but hopefully will giveyou the incentive to research your needs morefully and select a new installation withconfidence.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMNMore Police on our Streets

Surrey Police is developing plans to put largenumbers of frontline police officers on the

streets of Surrey, focused on tackling vitalissues which mean the most to the public, suchas anti-social behaviour and organised crimegangs.

I am very keen that as many local people aspossible are made aware of our plans frommyself, rather than through reporting in thelocal media, which is likely to only give aninterpretation of our plans hence this email foryour information. In summary, we want to:

• Create up to 200 new police constable poststo improve the service we deliver. There willbe more officers working in neighbourhoodpolicing teams tackling anti-social behaviour, and more officers tackling cross bordercriminality and organised crime groups.

• There will be a greater range of places tomeet neighbourhood policing teams (e.g.from libraries, shopping centres, counciloffices).

• We will be exploring replacing a number ofpolice stations with better ways to accessour services. Many of our police stations areold, costly to maintain and not particularlyaccessible to the vast majority of localcommunities - borne out by very lownumbers of people visiting them.

• In order to invest in 200 additionalconstables we will be reducing the number ofsenior managers within Surrey Police.

It will take a number of months to make thechanges, and we want to work withcommunities to review the best way of meetingand engaging with neighbourhood policingteams.

We need your help to tackleAnti-Social Driving…

Most people know about the main legalrequirements associated with driving a

motor vehicle, such as having current and validinsurance, a current MOT certificate andvehicle excise license and of course a validDriving Licence covering the vehicle beingdriven. We also hope that road users are awareof the consequences and penalties for drivingwithout a seatbelt (apart from very specificexemptions) and the use of hand-held mobilephones.

The penalty if an officer stops a driver for notwearing a seatbelt is a fixed penalty whichcarries a fine of £60. If an officer stopssomeone driving when using a hand-held mobilephone, this can result in a fixed penalty noticewhich incurs a fine of £60 and a minimum ofthree points on the driver’s licence.

What constitutes “anti-social driving”? This isnot just driving in an “anti-social” manner, butcan also include aggressive driving, including“tailgating”, wheel spinning, bad or dangerousparking, illegal off-road riding or driving ordriving in a manner which causes alarm ordistress to other road users or members of thepublic.

Police have powers to tackle anti-social drivingand these include issuing formal warningsagainst named drivers, if any further offencesare committed, can result in the vehicle beingseized by police.

It is very important, therefore, for members ofthe public to let us know if they experience anti-social driving as we can actually take robustaction to tackle persistent offenders. Ideally,we would like to know dates, days and timeswhen problems occur, together with a vehicledescription and registration details. You canreport incidents on 0845 125 2222 or by emailto [email protected]
