The Epsom Skin Clinic

Laser Liposuction is an innovative concept in laserassisted Liposculpture, which targets areas of fat thatare resistant to diet and exercise.

It is a minor procedure for body contouring which uses a fine cannula to deliver a safe, powerful laser to disrupt the fat cells causing them to break down. The fat deposits can then be removed using light suction. The Laser Liposuction treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, is permanent, safe and gives minimal downtime.

From the PublisherWell that was a pretty abysmal summer was it not? I think I cancount on the fingers of one hand the number of times we actually satout in the garden for dinner in the evening - just too cold, windy orplain wet. Never mind, let’s hang on to the hope of an Indiansummer before we drift into the cooler weather. However, there issomething comforting about the cosiness of the winter, that said, Ido look forward to long summer days by mid January! Ho hum.

1st-31st October sees the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival, whichlaunches with a street party in Leatherhead town centre on Saturday 1st, page 12.There’s a small events listing on pages 16 and 18 which features some of the events takingplace, but it is nowhere near the full listings which can be found at www.arts-alive.co.ukor from a brochure which you can pick up from your local library, Leatherhead Help shop,Dorking Halls or Leatherhead Theatre. I think everyone involved has worked extremelyhard to organise this Festival in order to put together a really interesting and variedselection of events for us to enjoy. Do try and support the Festival by attending one ofthose events. There’s bound to be one that will interest you.

The Infant Club Foot Appeal was set up by Ashtead resident Dr Charlotte Hawkins. Clubfoot affects 2 out of 1000 children in England and treatment means children grow upwithout disability, but in Zanzibar the figures are higher and most children born with the

disability die before the age of 20. Dr Hawkins hasalready treated 400 children but there is still work tobe done. You can help by attending the Follies Show,at Epsom Playhouse, full details on page 48.

Once again Leatherhead town centre will be at themercy of hundreds of kids having fun on their annualHalloween rampage on Monday 31st - with lots ofcharacters, competitions and games organised by LucyHanson and Pat Lawless, the Town Centre & SwanCentre Managers, everything you need to know is onpage 52 - and may the force be with you!

There’s a rather unpleasant bank card scam inoperation in this area at the moment, and the policeare warning local residents to be on their guard, details on page 78.

Apparently the thingy on the top right hand corner ofthis page isn’t an App, it’s a QR (quick response) code.Well there we have it.

Must away, enjoy the start of autumn - hot chocolate, warm slippers and a cosy dressing gown - how sadam I?

Cheerio.

Just as in previous years, the AshteadResidents’ Association is pleased toannounce that we will be holding ourannual Autumn Meeting this month onWednesday 19th October from 19.00 –21.30 at the Ashtead Peace MemorialHall. The meeting will start at 19.00 forrefreshments, with presentationsstarting at 19.30.

Our first speaker is Feras Alshaker,Project Manager, from SouthernRailway. He will be talking about TheNational Stations ImprovementProgramme (NSIP), its background, parameters, and funding arrangementsand then he will talk about the workSouthern has done with Network Rail onNSIP. After that he will move on toAshtead specifically, the work that hasgone into the station so far and what isto come. Then Feras will talk throughthe designs and talk about the period oftime between beginning building workand all the work being completed. Therevised station includes some 60additional car parking spaces andadditional disabled spaces. In additionthere will be new cycle racks with anincreased cycle capacity of 110 cycles. The enlarged station will offer muchbetter facilities for travellers. This is agood chance for residents to hear aboutthe new developments planned forAshtead and how it will affect us. Inaddition Mark Epsom, local Manager forSouthern will be there to answerquestions, as will a representative fromNetwork Rail. There will be ample timeto ask questions of all three, and weknow the station, the level crossing and

the footbridge are all areas of localinterest and concern.

With the Olympic Cycle Race due totake place through Leatherhead andDorking, we have invited SurriyaSubramaniam, Cultural DevelopmentOfficer, Surrey County Council, to talkabout the race and how the Council feltabout the test race and any issues thatmight have arisen. The local press hasbeen filled with comments, bothpositive and negative, so, if you areinterested in finding out more about therace, where to watch, what effects itwill have on local transport, roads andshops, this is a great opportunity for youto come along.

Both topics are of great interests toresidents and for this meeting, we havetried to open up the discussions toencourage as many to come along fromall age groups. If you have any ideas forfurther topics, please do get in touchwith us.

For me, August, the traditional holiday monthcame and went very quickly, with only a longweekend away. But looking at last month’scontribution to the Local, it seems that I gave allour news in that. What should have been thecentre of news for this month, namely theLeatherhead Highways Forum will not take placeuntil after the press deadline has passed. But onepiece of news that we are celebrating is that theCounty Council have listened to the various cries, and have decided to abandon their plans to chargefor on-street parking. Thank you SCC.

Looking to the future, there are many matterswhich deserve our attention – not just the LRA, butall of us. The Boundary Commission has suggestedthat the area of Leatherhead on the outside of thebypass, (the A24) should be removed from theCounty Electoral Division of Leatherhead andFetcham East, and added to the Division of DorkingHills. Whilst I have heard little from the residentsaffected, it does seem to be a crazy idea promptedonly by numbers. It has little relevance to thegeography of the area or the nature of theresidential problems and amenities. By this I meanthat those who live in the affected area, considerthat their civic life centres on the Town ofLeatherhead and not the rural area which stretchesto the West Sussex border. I know that there aresome common issues between the 2 divisions, suchas Norbury Park, but in the main it is a question ofchalk and cheese, town and country, etc. So theLRA are writing to the Commissioners and invitingthem to visit the area and meet the people.

Recently I met someone who was brought up inLeatherhead and who now lives in Wimbledon, butwho still visits the Town quite frequently. She toldme how she remembered the busy High Street, and

the congestion. Now she sees it as a pleasant areabut lacking in people. I pointed out that it has farmore life than it had 10 years ago. Progress seemsto be a double edged sword. But in our discussionon the comparisons of life then and now, wequickly drifted into the national changes inretailing and service provision. These changes arenot just local, but extend to most of the smallertowns throughout the country. In recent yearsthere has been an upsurge of petrol filling stationsoffering a wider range of goods throughout longeropening hours. This has now developed into theprovision of late night café services. Out on themain roads this can be seen as a great boon to longdistance lorry drivers and motorists. But when thishappens in the middle of town, what effect will ithave on local trade? I don’t know the answer. ButI do know that when these local petrol stationsbegan to sell newspapers it had a devastatingeffect on the neighbouring newsagents.

The Government’s Draft Planning Framework hascreated a furore in some circles, but having readit, why this outcry I am not sure. Far from openingup a developers’ licence to build anywhere, itemphasises the need for local plans to controldevelopment through local policies. It provides amechanism for Neighbourhood organisations, suchas Parish Councils and Residents Associations to getpolicies adopted which reflect the nature of theareas’ needs. It continues to provide the nationalpolicies of Green Belts for designation of open landbetween built-up areas, and the Areas ofOutstanding Natural Beauty, to protect thecountryside. What it does mean though is thatlocal organisations are to have a greater say inpolicy making – but not in decision making.

Meredith Worsfold and ‘The Tower of Babel’This is the story of the assembly of a very large jigsaw puzzle which was resting quite peacefully inits box for several years. Ravensburger, the manufacturer claims that it is the world’s biggestmanufactured puzzle, made up of 9,120 pieces, and measures 7’6” x 4’6” with 120 pieceshorizontally and 76 vertically. However, this claim was made in 1996, but there is mention now ofa Ravensburger puzzle with 32,000 pieces! I started the puzzle in May 2010 and finished in Junethis year, 13 months in all.

A brief word about the picture by Pieter Bruegel, he lived in the Low Countries in the 16th centuryand had two sons who were also famous artists. The painting is a wonderful imaginative picturewhich reflects in detail the buildings, dress, tools, equipment and builders at work around thattime. The story is the symbolic Tower of Babel taken from Genesis Ch.11 in the era of the flood.

I learned many things in those 13 months - my desk was out of action for the whole period; therewas need for several cards and ply pieces to accommodate waiting pieces, some even in otherrooms in the early stages. I started by removing all the blue sky pieces and put them in a box, then all the green pieces followed suit, now I could concentrate on the remaining yellow andorange pieces of the tower. I had decided to obtain an 8’ x 4’ sheet of 6mm MDF board (and cutthis down to the size of the puzzle) and I could then ultimately put the four quarters together andfor the first time see the puzzle as a whole; quite exciting as this was the largest I had seen in mylifetime.

My next problem is to make a decision about the future of the puzzle. There are two options: 1)dismantle and return to its four bags in the box; 2) keep in its complete state on the 7’6” x 4’6”board. I think, to be realistic it will have to be the first option as I live in a flat and space islimited, also I will be 90 next year. So I think it will be back in its box, in spite of my love of thelarge picture and perusing its fascinating details. I am making sure that I have a variety of goodphotographs to enjoy, now this wonderful experience is over.

Mr Meredith Worsfold was born in 1922, and still lives in Ashtead and has written two books on the village entitled ‘Ashtead TheStreet in the 1920’s’ and ‘Meredith’s Memories - Recollections of Ashtead Village and Other Stories’

Report on Ashtead Women’s Institute MeetingSeptember 2011

It was a large gathering who met again after our summer break, during which time many of usenjoyed a wonderful afternoon canal boat trip and splendid WI tea. Our President BlancheDouglass told us about the forthcoming WI Emlyn Downs Lunch, and a visit to behind the scenes atHampton Court, and we caught up on news of members since our last meeting in July.

Normal Willis, ex-President of the British and European TUC, was our speaker, his subject was, surprisingly, ‘Still Getting Stitched Up’ because of his hobby over many years - embroidery.

Mr Willis first became interested as he knew his forthcoming meeting would be boring, and a shopin York was selling a sampler with the words The Road to a Friend’s House is Never Long. Hemade this for a friend and never looked back. He was a trustee of the Royal School ofNeedlework, and is a trustee of the Sunbury Millennium Embroidery. Mr Willis gave us all anextremely entertaining evening with many stories to tell of his years in public life.

We also looked at the menus for our Christmas lunch to be held at the Clink Prison. We havearranged a coffee morning, and the many sub-groups are now starting again following thesummer.

Our ‘challenge’ for the evening was to bring along a piece of embroidery, to be judged by MrWillis, and next month will be to show an interesting watch, as our speaker will talk on Old Clocksand Watches.

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, 7.15pm for7.30pm, and would welcome any visitors to come and join us. Details on the ‘what’s on’ page.

Sam would never admit to living vicariouslythrough his children but he couldn't deny thesatisfaction he felt from recounting Ben'ssporting achievements after a particularly goodmatch. The testosterone fuelled fathers wouldstand on the edge of the pitch, punching the airand yelling at the young and often embarrassedsportsmen. They were deeply critical ofreferees from other schools and convinced oftheir own superior tactical expertise. If thematch result was in their favour, fathers wouldpuff out their chests with smug self satisfactionand then 'sportingly' patronise the parents ofthe losing teams. Of course, the level of smugsatisfaction was relative to the performance oftheir offspring. The parent of any child whohad performed badly kept very quiet andreturned home as quickly as possible.

Sam was desperate to share sporting glory withhis younger son, Daniel, but the opportunityrarely presented itself. Daniel wasn't a naturalsportsman and therefore never in a schoolteam. Sam had introduced him to severaldifferent sports but Daniel just wasn'tinterested and his lack of enthusiasm frustratedhis father enormously.

However a surprising opportunity for parentalsmugness arose when Daniel came home oneday with the school chess trophy. Sam tookgreat delight in praising his son and basked inreflected glory. After all, he had introduced hisson to chess and a trophy was a trophy...

Daniel's school victory led to an invitation tocompete in a regional chess tournament andfather and son started a serious trainingprogramme to prepare for this important event.Ruth enjoyed seeing their heads together indeep concentration but soon tired of theendless discussion of tactics over meal times. The chess board was often brought to the table, until Daniel slopped tomato ketchup over thewhite queen, the black knight and severalpawns.

Daniel and Sam set off for the chesstournament, confident of success. Thecompetition took place in a Guildford secondaryschool and, as they walked through the doors ofthe vast dining hall, they were presented withseemingly endless rows of tables with chessboards and timers. The stale cooking smells anddisconcerting atmosphere of whisperedsolemnity brought back buried memories ofschool exams which made Sam veryuncomfortable.

The surrounding rooms, designated 'practiceareas' were full of intense young competitors, being schooled by even more intense parents.Sam and Daniel registered and were given namebadges and a results sheet to fill in as theyprogressed though the competition.

Daniel did well. He won his first three gamesbut forgot to press the timer between moves. He was unnerved by the silence in the room andkept trying to strike up a conversation with hisopponent. At one point, he got the gigglesbecause the girl to the side of him scraped herchair and he thought it sounded like a fart. Astern looking adjudicator came over to see whatthe problem was. Being a logical and honestchild, Daniel saw no harm in explaining why hewas laughing. Unfortunately his honestyresulted in a red face for his neighbour and anofficial warning for Daniel.

Sam, meanwhile, was keeping himself goingwith cups of insipid milky coffee and rich teabiscuits. He was sitting on an uncomfortableschool chair in a separate room. Parentsweren't allowed to watch the games in casethey influenced their children so Sam wasgetting extremely bored. There was to be nopunching the air or cheers of support here. Hehad initially struck up a conversation with someof the other parents but chess 'banter' wascompletely alien to him. The competitivenessof parents on the sports field paled intoinsignificance when compared with chessparents. Complex pre-game strategy wascoupled with even more complex post-gameanalysis and Sam was unable to follow theterminology and references to Russian chessmasters.

Glorious sunshine taunted him from behind thesmeared school windows and Sam fidgeted onhis plastic seat. He was due to play footballwith some friends later in the day and the morechess games Daniel won, the less likely this wasto happen. Daniel emerged from his fifth matchwith a victorious grin and Sam's heart sank.

"If I win this match Dad, I get through to thenext regional tournament! And what's evenmore brilliant is that the next tournament is onyour birthday... And it's in Sheffield!

Club Foot - what is it and how you can help?

Club foot is a gene derived birth defect. 2 out ofevery 1,000 children are born with it in England, butit is treated in infancy and children generally growup without disability.

Not so in Zanzibar. There the incidence is about 40times higher as the gene pool is small. Many growdeformed through no treatment or inappropriatetreatment and most of them die before they reachthe age of 20.

Ashtead resident, Dr Charlotte Hawkins heard of thisand decided to do something about it.

She set up the Infant Club Foot Appeal

Already in nine months great progress has beenmade – she has made two visits to Zanzibar, treatedover 400 children for lower limb deformities andtrained local staff in up to date treatment protocols.Great strides – but more to be done.

Charlotte was photographed atAshtead Village Day (above) wherethe new appeal, now successfullyregistered as a charity (No 1142858),was sponsored by the Rotary Club ofAshtead. Christopher Biggins, TVcomedy entertainer and a Patron ofthe appeal opened the Village Dayfestivities. With them is Des Wilbyfrom Epsom Light Opera. (ELOC)

Local students say thank you to Rotary ClubIn early September, two sixth form students fromTherfield School in Leatherhead visited the RotaryClub of Leatherhead’s weekly meeting at thePolice Federation Headquarters to give apresentation about their participation on theRYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) course inApril this year.

The Youth Centre has remained busy as alwaysover the summer months. Gary (The ACCTYouth Worker) has been busy with hisTransition Programme supporting young peoplebetween the Primary and Secondary Schools, and we maintained a full evening programmethroughout the summer holidays.

There were no expeditions to far away placesthis year, but we continue to take the KartingGroup to race events up in Ipswich, and haveworked with two groups on adventureresidentials, the first (with the older group) tothe Brecon Beacons in Wales and the second(with the younger group) to the Coltwolds.

Karting is a great way for young people to learntechnical and driving skills which arerecognised by Open College Networkaccreditations. The programme develops socialand leadership skills, improving confidence andthe ability to work in a team. All of whichmakes young people very attractive to collegesand employers. We often see our young peoplego on to work in the motor industry and relatedfields.

The Adventure Trip to the Brecon Beacons(sponsored by County Councillor ChrisTownsend), is quite a tough week of individualand team challenges mixed in with some timeto relax and have fun with friends. In thepicture you can see two of our group sittinginside an underground cave network that wehad been exploring. Other activities includedsurvival skills (building camp and sleeping inthe outdoors overnight), canoeing, archery andabseiling. The young people are moreindependent and have to cook for each otherthroughout the week.

The Coltswold trip takes place in a fullycatered activity centre and is more about funactivities and team building.

There are opportunities for personal challengesuch as the climbing tower you can see in thepicture below. Other activities will haveincluded, raft building, trust games, sailing andlots of team games.

The summerhas beenvery hardwork butgreat fun atthe sametime. As wego into theautumn weare nowdealing headon with thechanges

happening in the way that the Youth Centresare going to be managed and staffed. In theshort term there is of course the predictabletension and anxiety whilst the details are beingworked out. In the long term I am hopeful thiswill mean that there will be the opportunity tofurther improve what is already a great serviceto our local young people.

This home-made fudgeis a delicious sweet treat

that kids will love and isgreat for a Hallowe’en

treat. You can replace thecherries with raisins, chopped stem ginger orchopped nuts.

1. Place the sugar in a large heavy-based pan with the butter, milk and evaporated milk. Heat gently, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Bring the mixture to the boil, without stirring, and continue to boil until the mixture reaches 116°C/240°F on a sugar thermometer. (If you don’t have a sugar thermometer, place a jug of verycold water by the hob. After boiling the fudge mixture for about 5 minutes, drop a teaspoonfulof the hot syrup into the water. If the syrup forms a ball which you can roll between your fingersthen its ready – if not, boil for a further few minutes then test again.)

3. Stir the boiling mixture occasionally to prevent it from sticking.

4. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla essence and chopped glace cherries. Beat witha wooden spoon until the mixture is stiff, grainy and paler in colour.

5. Quickly pour the mixture into a greased 18cm (7in) square shallow cake tin. Leave until almost setthen mark into squares. When completely cold, cut or break into the squares. Store the fudge in anairtight container.

DDOS present the spine-chilling world premier of ‘Dracula’Tuesday 25th-Saturday 29th October - 7.45pm

A thrilling and electrifying production, this new play adaptation utilises much ofthe original 1897 novel, with extracts of its original dialogue, yet effortlesslycombines this with the cinematic images and situations popular culture has cometo associate with the legendary character and genre, particularly in films such asthose of ‘Hammer’ Horror.

Set in 1930’s Yorkshire, Dracula has enslaved Lucy, daughter of Doctor Seward, the owner of the local mental asylum. Having lost his daughter, Seward sees thesame illness overtaking Lucy’s friend Mina and when her condition is beyond hismedical knowledge, he sends for his old Dutch friend Abraham Van Helsing tohelp. But can Van Helsing defeat the evil of Dracula before he takes Mina too tothe world of the undead?

A spine-tingling and entertaining production, ‘Dracula’ will capture theimagination and offer an evening cloaked in suspense and seduction. Drama toreally sink your teeth into!

Halloween & Bonfire Night

As Halloween and Bonfire Night approach, local officers will be out visiting shopsand licensed premises to ask for their co-operation in minimising the risks ofpeople buying fireworks or alcoholunderage, as well as other items such asflour and eggs which may not be intendedfor cooking!

Although the majority of people enjoythese festivities in a pleasant and friendlyatmosphere, some people use theopportunity to target vulnerable residentsand cause criminal damage. Please speakto your children to ensure that they donot throw anything at other people’shouses or, for their own safety, knock ondoors of people they do not know. As inrecent years, police will be out in forceon the evening of Halloween and will takea very dim view of anyone causingdamage or intimidating residents. If youlive near someone you considervulnerable to this type of targeting, please visit them and if you think it isnecessary then let your local officersknow of your concerns.

Local Safer NeighbourhoodTeam Newsletters

During the coming months, all homesshould be receiving a copy of our twice-yearly newsletter, which provides localcommunities with an update about keyincidents, issues and results that havebeen tackled by your Safer NeighbourhoodTeams and partner agencies.

newsletters, fast-time updates are alsoposted on our Facebook page and viaTwitter – look for Mole Valley Beat!! Wealso send email updates to those of you inthe community who have registered withus as “Active Citizens”. We are also, ofcourse, very grateful to local publications– such as The Ashtead & LeatherheadLocal – for giving us this regularopportunity to get key messages across topeople. All of this is in addition toregular police panel meetings, surgeriesand “Street Meets” which are beingdeveloped by your local SaferNeighbourhood Teams. This involvesletting people know that your localofficers will be in a particular street orlocation between specified times and areavailable for you to come and speak withthem about any issues or concerns youmay have.

Although we try to provide as manydifferent ways for people to contact andspeak with us, we appreciate that somepeople simply do not have access to orwish to embrace “modern technology”wholeheartedly. For this reason, wewould always encourage members of thecommunity to speak to officers wheneverthey are out on patrol or at “StreetMeets”. Of you can telephone your localteam on 01483 639635.

Autumn colour has the ability to makeme go weak at the knees. I love it....justas the temperatures are dropping andthings can become dull and gloomy, yourgarden develops a new potential – to bepositively glowing with fantastic foliagecolour. Autumn is a great time to planttrees and shrubs and as the plants areshowing their beautiful colours, you’llknow exactly what you’re getting.

Plants for vertical surfaces:Vitis coignetiae – a rampant grower, theheart-shaped leaves may measure 25-30cm across and their splendid scarletand crimson colours are un-missable.This vine can be grown through large trees andover sturdier supports. Colours are especiallygood if the soil is miserable or the root runrestricted.

Parthenocissus quinquefolia - commonlyknown as the Virginia creeper, it’s anothersizeable climber, and this also offers a gooddegree of self-clinging ability, so it can beused on walls without a support system. Inautumn the leaves are numerous shades ofscarlet, orange and red. It can grow tall somay need trimming.Parthenocissus henryana - a relative of theVirginia creeper, but much more restrained. Inautumn the leaves turn from a dark green tobronzy colour with pretty silvery white veiningto rich shades of red.

Shrubs:Fothergilla major or Witch Alder is a gorgeoussmallish to medium-sized shrub, covered withscented creamy white spiky flower clustersearly in the year, before the leaves appear. The foliage turns shades of yellow and orangein the autumn. Fothergilla needs a lime-freesoil.

Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as thesnowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a largeshrub or small tree and produces lovelywhitish blossom in spring. The leaves changefrom a coppery colour to bright green to onehuge mass of fiery colours in autumn.

Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn

show stoppers, and for smaller gardens youfind it hard to beat one of the Japanesemaples with their stunning divided leavesturning rich purples, reds, oranges andyellows. They do well in large tubs, perfectfor a sheltered back yard.

Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub withattractively rounded leaves that come inshades of green, pinkish–orange or purple witha bright display in autumn. The fluffy seedheads that are left after flowering look justlike little clouds or plumes of smoke.

If your garden soil is waterlogged now, thenwait a week or more until it is in bettercondition before planting. If the soil is dry, itwill still need watering well, and the soilaround the roots will need to be kept moist.Always check the potential height and spreadof trees or shrubs you’re considering. Then sitback and enjoy your own bit of autumnalmagic!

Roaring HouseFarm(pictured left)is a grade IIlistedbuilding. It ison FetchamDowns not farfrom NorburyPark, with afarmhouse ofparticularinterest. It isa two bay,

almost square, timber framed building, probably datingfrom the early 17th century with many changes to itsince then. In about 1790 the house was refronted inbrick and this is a likely date of the barn and thegranary. The old part of the house next to the chimneyend retains a timber-framed gable end to the tie butabove the framing there are modern timbers. Thefront of the building is clad in a dark, red brick withseams of gritty mortar. The central door opens directlyinto the hearth room with service rooms adjoining, paved with large tiles. The back door out to the well is by the hearth leading to apantiled outshot. This little area outside the back door, with timber framing, dull bricknoggin and the flint wall of the outshot, is typical of the scenes so loved by GertrudeJekyll some of which she pictured in her book Old West Surrey.

A little way outside the back door of the farmhouse, but on the other side of the trackway passing through the farm, is a large almost square granary (above). This stands onnine stone staddles, (Staddlestones are used to stop rats getting in the barns) and ispossibly of 18th century date. Its roof is tiled and gabled at both ends, the cladding isof black-tarred weatherboarding.

Police warn residents to be wary of bank card scamSurrey Police is warning residents about an emerging scam in which fraudsters usefalse pretences to try and get people’s bank cards. The scam works by the victiminitially receiving a phone call, or number of phone calls, from someone claimingto be from their bank. The caller checks the victim’s details, including asking fortheir pin number, then informs them that they need a new bank card. The victimis advised that someone will be visiting them shortly to collect their old card. Aperson, dressed to look like a courier, then arrives at the door to take the card.

Surrey Police urges householders never to give out bank details or other personalinformation over the phone whatever the reason behind the request. Banks wouldnever operate in this way either by phoning or turning up out of the blue. Theywould write to customers and would expect them to cut up cards personally whenthey expired. This is a worrying scam which is clearly being aimed at the mostvulnerable members of our community. Families, friends and carers are urged toexplain to others who may be at risk what they should do to protect themselves. Ifat anytime a resident feels suspicious they should contact Surrey Police as soon aspossible.

Anyone with any information about these incidents is asked to call Surrey Policeon 101, quoting reference MV/11/3469. Alternatively, information can be passedto Crimestoppers, anonymously and free of charge, by calling 0800 555 111.

What grew well in your garden this year? I hope you have been enjoying copiousamounts of summer veg – we have been wildly exceeding our 5-a-day, eating loads ofbeans, courgettes, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, raspberries, blueberries, plums, apples - don’t you just love the summer? - although it has been a funny year weather-wise, with gardeners having to contend with an early drought followed by a cool wetsummer.

We have been delighted with the successof the “Village Veg” project this year.

Transition Ashtead liaised with the council to usethe planters on The Street , on Craddocks Paradeand outside the library to grow veg, with residentsinvited to help themselves when the crops areready. The traders on the Street and at CraddocksParade and staff at the library have taken it totheir hearts, watering and feeding the planters andreally making Village Veg work. Without their helpand enthusiasm, it would have been very difficultto keep an eye on it all. Many thanks to all whohave been involved! Our MP Chris Grayling wasin the Street recently to see how it was going andhe is very pleased to see the community beingbrought together in such a positive way by thisveg-growing initiative.

Transition Ashtead is planning to continue theproject next year, learning from this year’sexperience about what crops are most suitable.Herbs are a real winner, as they are the ultimate in cut-and-come again plants, so we’ll retain therosemary, mint, thyme chives and coriander. Chillies also work well, as you don’t need many toreally spice up a meal. We will probably add spinach and chard next year as you can harvest abunch of leaves, leaving plant to grow some more. “Rainbow Chard” has the additional bonus ofbeing a really attractive vegetable collection, with red and white stems and leaves of variousgreens. Have you any suggestions for veg or salad?

We have endeavoured to make the planters look attractive by using long-flowering Frenchmarigolds and trailing lobelia. The feedback from passers-by when we have been weeding andwatering has been unanimously positive and the project has been very successful in putting a smileon shoppers faces! We’ve had some problems with pests - slugs, which had a good go at theFrench beans and the cabbages, and vandals, which made off with the runner beans plants andtheir poles.

We are hoping that the project will inspire more Ashtead folk to “grow their own” and get curiousabout where their food comes from – let us know if you have been inspired!

Stop press! Transition Ashtead are planning to hold the Apple pressing event at APMHon 15th October – watch the web site for details!
