Welcome to Step 17. In this lesson we’re going to bring the vision and purpose you created in our previous
steps into your daily reality via grounded determination and purposeful action.
You already have some wonderful tools here for getting moving with your purpose, including our robust
goal setting guide, The 10 Principles of Goal Achievement!
So in this lesson we’ll focus on ways you can maintain effortless action through balancing the various
energies of passion.

The reason we title this step “Engage With Passion,”
when it seems we’re talking about action-taking
and setting goals, is that the action is the easy
part—but only if and when you maintain the passion
to consistently step forward into that action... no
matter what.
Many systems teach us that sheer will can be
enough, but as we discussed in our 10 Principles of
Goal Achievement, will power alone can never
quite do the trick for permanent change and true
success. Because success isn’t just monetary.
Even if you’re wealthy and have a perfect life on
paper... if that life doesn’t make you happy, you
haven’t quite succeeded at achieving the destiny
your deepest heart yearned for.
And so one of the master keys that can unlocks your
destiny and purpose for you lies in the vibrant
energies of passion. If you’re a creative like I am, or
you’ve ever been taken over by a whirlwind of
intense feeling or energy, then you know that the
energies of passion (and the things that trigger our
passion) are complex, multilayered and of a
sometimes contradictory nature.
So it is with the vibrant energies you’ll want to call
forth into your life as you begin to engage your pur-
pose. Let’s touch on a few of the main ones...
Devotion
The first energy passion can help us bring to our
purpose is the energy of devotion. When we are
inspired toward devotion we produce a powerful
singular focus that is nearly impossible to maintain
through sheer will power.
You can liken the feeling of devotion to a powerful
gravity or magnetism that draws you in so that you
are in zero effort as you draw close to the object or
subject of your devotion.
Ways to inspire the energy of devotion around your
purpose is to consider what has inspired devotion
for you in the past. For example, if you want to start
a business helping women heal their traumas or
wounds, how can you inspire a strong devotion
there?
In such a case it helps to find a strong positive bright
light as it can be painful to devote yourself to the
pain you wish to heal in others. If you’ve found
yourself inspired toward a religious or spiritual
devotion, look at ways to integrate that into your
business, perhaps by using the symbol of a deity or
saint that you resonate strongly with.
If you have felt more devotion and powerful gravity
toward children, as another example, you could
focus your work with women towards mothers and
healing the mother/daughter dynamic... or you
could work with young girls in their pre-teens to help
them find their own center of gravity at the most
vital time when most young girls fracture their
psyches due to the pressures and dynamics of
teen-hood.
The idea here is to find within your purpose that
which naturally inspires your continued devotion.

Excitement
The next energy passion can awaken for us is
excitement. Where the energy of devotion is intense
and deep, it can also become heavy and create a
stillness. (“I don’t ever want to leave this space right
here where I am!”)
So for inspired action toward purpose, it’s important
to also awaken the movement and verve of
excitement. It balances the somber energy of
devotion with the playfulness, flow and creation
energy we need when we are creating within our
purpose.
If you find that you’re too tired, or no longer
interested in taking the necessary actions to bring
your purpose into fruition, it may be a sign to ignite
more excitement energy. A great way to do this is
to align your purpose and the actions you must take
with themes or activities that naturally excite you.
If you hate being indoors at a desk, but you need
to create a business plan or write your book—things
you imagine must happen in the quietude of a
room at a desk—think outside the box. You can
meld nearly anything together.
For example, if you’re more verbal than tactile,
don’t type out your business plan or book. Instead
carry around a tape recorder and dictate your
book or plan while walking out in nature or sitting at
the beach. Be in the sun. Soak up movement.
Whatever it is that lights you up, add it in to the
duties you must perform as you actualize your
purpose.
Sacrifice
Probably one of the hardest energies to invite into
your daily life is the energy of sacrifice. Yet we would
be remiss and lying to ourselves if we thought
pursuing our purpose would never ask us to sacrifice
old habits, other interests, or our old stories for why
we’ll fail or won’t live up to our purpose.
Sacrifice is a tricky energy to work with – and for
obvious reasons. Many people accidentally move
into martyr energy or victim energy. To balance
within sacrifice energy that supports and mobilizes
passion you’ll want to revisit our Step 3 on Endings.
Sacrifice is really about letting go and releasing
what no longer serves us. This is the destructive (not
necessarily damaging or bad though!) aspect of
sacrifice.
The other aspect is constructive and it asks much of
us as we funnel more time, more energy, more
blood sweat and tears into our new creation.
Conscious acts of creation will always take more
energy and attention than our actions to maintain
those creations. And so in the beginning of your
journey to actualize your purpose you may find
yourself sacrificing time, a sense of balance, and
other positive things you value.
Just be sure to bring yourself back to balance at
proper intervals and to nourish and fill yourself back
up during hyperactive creation stages. Sacrifice
anything too long and it can dismantle you.
Additionally, any negative things you sacrifice and
let go of, such as a bad habit... once truly released
it will no longer feel ‘sacrificed.’ You’ve removed the
charge on it that made you feel like something was
missing – or that you needed that habit for some
purpose or benefit.
If, after a time, you still feel that you’re sacrificing
that habit, this means you’ve only suppressed it but
not truly healed and released it. In these instances I
would take extra time and focus to release at a
deeper level, perhaps with the assistance of a
healer, therapist or other trusted professional.

Determination
So far we’ve looked at energy that brought us
deeply into and toward the object or subject of our
purpose. We’ve also looked at energy that flows
broad and wide... and then we looked at the
energy that cuts away and helps us focus our acts
of destruction in the service of creation.
What makes it all work together is the energy of
determination. This is our forward and rising energy
that gives true passion its tenacity and doggedness.
Many Visionaries will say some variation of this truth:
“Success is just getting up one more time than you
fall down.” It’s that dogged determination that gets
us back on our feet, one foot in front of the other,
every time no matter what.
Determination therefore uses the force of our will
power, which is absolutely necessary in actualizing
purpose and engaging with passion. Yet what fuels
determination is the other energies it coalesces into
that forward rising movement.
We think determination comes first, but actually it is
birthed from the complex and powerful binding of
the other energies of passion. This happens naturally
when all are present. Images: ALice Popkorn

To root this in your everyday life, determination is easiest to maintain when you balance the competing yet
complementary energies described above (tension breeds life and builds energy).
Here’s a great protocol for daily balance and expression of all these energies of passion:
1. First thing in the morning, take 5 minutes to ground and center yourself for the day’s conscious
creation toward your purpose.
2. Look at (or create) your task list for the day. Don’t pile on everything you can think of that has to
get done, but rather really look at what you can get done in a day and what you want to commit
to completing today.
3. Choose the task you least look forward to, and do that one first. This gives a powerful spark of
determination mixed with the energy of sacrifice. It seems that as the day stretches on, calling forth
this kind of energy gets harder and harder as we become more and more exhausted.
So do this first!
4. Next, choose the task you most love and look forward to, and give yourself an infusion of excitement
to replenish some of the energy you expended already.
5. After that, tackling the rest of your to-do list is usually much easier because you’ve already
completed what you dreaded the most and reinforced your sense of completion and drive.
6. I recommend you make time each day to engage in a task or activity that is purely passionate, i.e.
whether it helps your purpose or not, you’d do it anyway. This may be taking a pottery class or
learning a new language. Reading a juicy fiction novel or watching your favorite intellectual sitcom.
It doesn’t have to be work-related, in fact it usually won’t be! But it’s not relaxation either. It’s active,
purposeful play. ☺7. Finally, also make time each day to engage in rejuvenation, relaxation and replenishment. It can
be taking a bath, sitting out in your garden, walking in nature, reading at a café, or devotional study
if it calms and nourishes you.
8. Then, before going to bed, perhaps prepare your task list for the next day and also take 5 minutes
to ground and center yourself. Focus on releasing all the energy of the day and let go of any
unfinished tasks or the tasks waiting for you tomorrow. By writing them down you commit them to
the reality of paper and can release them from the creative mind so that it can rest and relax.
Clearly every day won’t always be able to honor this protocol. However making a healthy habit of
engaging your day and its tasks in this way will help you create incredible momentum. The greatest cities,
businesses, works of art and even nations are all built one brick at a time. One stroke at a time. One act at
a time.
That’s why we can never underestimate the power we hold in every little action we take!
