Our nationally recognized Adjudicators/Clinicians attending this year’s Festival provide participating band students with an invaluable opportunity to improve both their technical and music skills.

Evaluators & Clinicians

The bands performing today will be evaluated by judges using the rating code and judging sheet similar to the practices used by Illinois High School Association’s organizational contest. Several aspects of a band’s performance are scrutinized and given a rating between 1 and 4, with 1 being the highest. A score of 7-10 points places the band in Division I; a score of 11-15 points places the band in Division II; and a score of 16-28 points places the band in Division III. Following is a brief description of each of the seven captions:

General Musicianship and Interpretation Elements such as: tempo, phrasing, dynamics, style, nuance, accent, taste and control of contrasts.

Tone Quality Considers the production of the musical sound: resonance, control, clarity, focus, consistency, warmth. Are the various sections demonstrating the characteristics of the instruments being played?

Balance Considers the likeness of the tonal qualities and intensities and the resultant sound. Do the performers understand and demonstrate an awareness of the ensemble? Did the various instrumental timbres complement each other to create a desirable sound? Was the instrumentation of the group adequate for the proper presentation of the composition?

Expression Did the group properly reflect the spirit of the composition?

Ensemble Considered are such mechanical elements as are required for precision of attacks and releases, proper breathing, articulation, blowing, fingering, fluency, tonguing and embouchure. Also considered are accuracy of note and rest values, duration, pulse, steadiness, correctness of meters, vertical alignment of the ensemble.

Intonation Were the various instrumental sections in tune with themselves and with the other sections of the group? Were the pitch conflicts relatively minor or flagrant? Did the intonation problems occur in pitch areas that are not generally related to such difficulties or could you expect these problems as a matter of the nature of the instrument?

Other Performance Factors Did the group present a satisfactory stage decorum? Do the students understand and demonstrate proper posture and instrument placement? Were there any physical distractions?

Evaluation Guidelines

Dr. Elizabeth PetersonEvaluator/Clinician

Dr. Elizabeth Peterson, clinical professor of music, joined the Illinois faculty in the fall of 2015. Dr. Peterson conducts the Illinois Wind Orchestra, teaches courses in instrumental conducting and supervises student teachers for the music education department. Prior to her appointment at the University of Illinois, Peterson was a tenured professor of music education at the Ithaca College School of Music. During the seventeen years she spent at Ithaca College, Peterson conducted numerous ensembles including the Symphonic Band, Brass Choir and All-Campus Band. She taught courses in conducting, undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, and supervised student teachers. Peterson was the co-conductor of the Ithaca Concert Band (community band) for fifteen

years. Her research interests include the study of first year music teachers and the pursuit of music and life long learning.

Dr. Peterson is active as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and school music consultant in the United States and Canada. She presents clinics at the local, state and national levels in the field of music education. Peterson’s book, “The Music Teachers First Year: Tales of Challenge Joy and Triumph”, is published by Meredith Music.

Prior to her appointment at Ithaca College, Peterson was an arts administrator and director of bands in the public schools of Ohio and Illinois. Dr. Peterson holds a number of professional memberships including the College Band Directors National Association, The National Association for Music Education, Mu Phi Epsilon, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda (an honorary music fraternity). Peterson was recently accepted into the American Bandmasters Association and she is also a member of the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors.

Dr. Shawn VondranAdjudicator/Clinician

Conductor of the Northwestern University Symphonic Band, Shawn Vondran teaches conducting, wind repertoire, and other courses in the music performance and education curricula. Prior to his appointment at Northwestern, he served as the assistant director of bands at Ball State University. Recognized for his excellence in teaching and dedication to students while at Ball State, Vondran received the College of Fine Arts Dean’s Teaching Award in 2013. Vondran also served on the faculties at Western Illinois University and Youngstown State University, respectively. He began his professional teaching career at Mentor High School in Ohio, where his concert, jazz, and marching bands consistently received superior ratings and accolades for their outstanding performances during his four-year tenure.

During his career as a conductor, Vondran has worked with a number of notable composers in the preparation, performance, and/or recording of their works for the wind band medium. Recent artistic collaborations include John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, David Maslanka, Michael Daugherty, Steven Bryant, and Joel Puckett. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, and Pi Kappa Lambda.

Vondran received his doctor of musical arts degree in instrumental conducting, with an emphasis in music education, from the University of Miami (FL). Vondran completed a master of music degree in instrumental conducting at Youngstown State University and earned a bachelor of music education degree (magna cum laude) at The Ohio State University.

Mr. David W. MaccabeeEvaluator/Clinician

David Maccabee was Director of Bands at United Township High School (UTHS), in East Moline, Illinois from 1986-2016 where he was director of all instrumental music ensembles. Previous positions include Geneseo and Nokomis Illinois school systems, immediate past Director of the Prairie Wind Ensemble, and he currently is Associate Director of Bands at Palo Verde High School, in Las Vegas, NV.

David Maccabee is a frequent guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator throughout the United States. His professional affiliations include the NEA, NAfME, the National Band Association (where he served as Illinois State Chair in 2014-15), and Pi Kappa Lambda. Maccabee has received accolades from the city

of East Moline, East Moline Rotary Club, John Deere and Co., UTHS, Western Illinois University, VanderCook College of Music, and a seven-time recipient of the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence

Under his direction, the UTHS Symphonic Band was selected for a record five featured stage performances at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival. In 1998, the UTHS Symphonic Band performed at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. In 2014, Maccabee was named “Bandmaster of the Year” by the Illinois chapter of Phi Beta Mu. Under his direction, the UTHS Symphonic Band performed at the University of Illinois prestigious Superstate Band Festival on many occasions, and was named Honor Band in 2015. In 2000, he was elected to membership in the prestigious American Bandmasters Association.

Maccabee received his BME from Augustana College (IL) and received his MME from VanderCook College of Music.

Mr. Daniel J. Farris Evaluator/Clinician

Daniel J. Farris is the Director of Athletic Bands and Director of the National High School Music Institute at Northwestern University. He is responsible for conducting the “Wildcat” Marching Band, Concert Band, and Contemporary Music Ensemble, and teaches courses in music education and conducting. He also serves as Assistant Conductor of the Northshore Concert Band.

Prior to moving to Northwestern, Mr. Farris served as Assistant Director of Bands/Marching Band Director at Illinois State University in Normal, IL and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also served as Director/Consultant to the Walt Disney World Collegiate All-Star Band in Orlando, FL, and taught in the

public schools of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Bands under his direction have performed at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Bands of America Regional and National Championships, the Dublin, Ireland St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and the Outback, Ticket City, Alamo, Motor City, and Sun Bowls.

Mr. Farris has been a clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada. He holds degrees in Music Education from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of the National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, and is an honorary member of Tau Beta Sigma/Kappa Kappa Psi.

Mr. Don ShupeEvaluator/Clinician

Mr. Shupe received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1973 and his master’s degree from Northwestern in 1974. He served as the Director of Bands at Libertyville High School from 1974 until 2010.

Mr. Shupe is a member of the American Bandmasters Association. In June of 1995, he received the Chicagoland Music Educator Award sponsored by Quinlan and Fabish Music Company. In 1998 he won the “Mr. Holland’s Opus Award” sponsored by Bob Rogers Travel. Libertyville High School honored Mr. Shupe naming him the “Educator of the Year” for the 2001 - 2002 school year. In 2008, Shupe received the

Outstanding Bandmaster Award from Phi Beta Mu professional Music Fraternity. In 2010 he was inducted into the Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement, he was honored with The John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Quinlan and Fabish Music Company. Under his direction, the L.H.S. Wind Ensemble performed at the Illinois Music Educator’s All-State Conference, and was named the Honor Band at the University of Illinois’ Superstate Band Competition several times. The Wind Ensemble also earned the honor of performing at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1998 and 2004. The L.H.S. Jazz Ensemble has won at least one jazz festival in 30 of his 36 years at Libertyville. Jazz Ensemble I was selected to perform at the National Band Association Convention in June of 1992 and had the honor of performing at the Mid-West International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1982 and again in 1993.

Mr. Shupe retired in June of 2010 and is currently active as a guest conductor and clinician. He conducts the Wind Ensemble at the College of Lake County and works with music education students for De Paul University.

Mr. Steven SchererEvaluator/Clinician

Steven Scherer has been Director of Bands at Geneseo High School since 2002 and is in his 33rd year of teaching. His teaching duties include Honors Band, Marching Band, Fall Symphonic Band (non-marching) A.P. Music Theory, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Musical Pit Orchestra, and Green Steel, a steel drum ensemble.

Mr. Scherer received a B.A. in Music Education from Western Illinois University. He earned his M.M.E. from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He has served as the General Chairman of the NCIC Conference Music Festival, and the Band Division Chairman of ILMEA District 2. He is a

member of the Illinois Music Education Association, NAfME, National Band Association, and Phi Beta Mu. Mr. Scherer also appears occasionally as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. Mr. Scherer has presented twice at the ILMEA Illinois Music Education Conference. He has a long history of involvement with Drum and Bugle Corps as a performer, instructor, judge, and alumni organizer. Mr. Scherer received a nomination and advanced to quarterfinals for The Grammy Foundation Music Educator Award. He is a multiple recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and has received multiple citations for “Most Inspirational Teacher” from Western Illinois University.

Prof. James F. KeeneEvaluator/Clinician

In 2008, Professor James F. Keene retired from the University of Illinois School of Music, where he held the titles of Director of Bands and Brownfield Professor of Music. Appointed in 1985, he was only the fourth person to hold the Director of Bands position since 1905. During his 23-year tenure at Illinois, the U of I Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony, under his direction, were selected to perform for every major music conference in the U.S., toured internationally, and performed in many of America’s most prestigious concert halls, including New York’s legendary Carnegie Hall and several performances in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. The Illinois Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band have produced one of the most extensive bodies of commercial band recordings in the world. These recordings have been

broadcast on National Public Radio in the U.S., as well as radio programs in Asia, Australia, and several European countries.

In addition to membership in several professional and honorary societies, Mr. Keene is an Evans Scholar, Past President of the Champaign Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary International Foundation. In 1993 Professor Keene was named as an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the International Percy Grainger Society in recognition of his devotion to the music of Grainger; he also serves on the Board of Directors of the John Philip Sousa Foundation and the historic Goldman Memorial Band of New York City. In 2002, Professor Keene was named Honorary Life Member of the Texas Bandmasters Association, becoming only the sixth person to be so honored in the 55-year history of that organization. Previous to his appointment at Illinois, Professor Keene taught at all levels, including building nationally recognized programs at East Texas State University (now Texas A and M – Commerce) and at the University of Arizona.

Professor Richard FloydEvaluator/Clinician

Richard Floyd served as State Director of Music Activities for the University Interscholastic League at the University of Texas at Austin from 1984 to 2013. In that position he coordinated all facets of secondary school music competition for some 3500 performing organizations throughout the state. His other professional endeavors include the post of Musical Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphonic Band. Former positions include Professor of Conducting and Wind Ensemble Conductor at the University of South Florida, Director of Bands at Baylor University and 11 years as a member of the music faculty in the nationally acclaimed Richardson, Texas school band program.

Mr. Floyd has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Europe as a clinician, adjudicator and conductor including appearances in 43 states and 10 foreign countries. His work has earned the compliments of numerous composers such as Ron Nelson, Ernst Krenek, Karel Husa, Frank Ticheli, Mark Camphouse and Roger Nixon.

In 2002 he was the single recipient of the prestigious A.A. Harding Award presented by the American School Band Directors Association in recognition of his significant and lasting contributions to the school band movement. The Texas Bandmasters Association named him Texas Bandmaster of the Year in 2006 and also recognized him with the TBA Lifetime Administrative Achievement Award in 2008. Most recently he received the Texas Music Educators Association Distinguished Service Award in 2009 and was inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame and Texas Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame in 2011. In December of the same year he was awarded the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic Medal of Honor for distinguished service and contributions to bands, orchestras and music education.

Dr. Stephen PetersonEvaluator/Clinician

Dr. Stephen G. Peterson was appointed Director of Bands at the University of Illinois in the fall of 2015. As Director of Bands, he conducts the Wind Symphony, leads the graduate wind conducting program, teaches courses in wind literature, and guides all aspects of one of the nation’s oldest, largest, and most storied band programs. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Illinois he served as Director of Bands at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, for seventeen years. From 1988-1998 he served as Associate Director of Bands at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Dr. Peterson was also conductor of the renowned Northshore Concert Band. He held positions as Associate and Interim Director of Bands at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas and has several years of successful teaching experience in the public schools in Arizona.

Peterson maintains a busy schedule as a conductor and clinician, and as such, has appeared on four continents and in forty-two states. He is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the College Band Directors National Association, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and has been honored with membership in the prestigious American Bandmaster’s Association. He is also member of Phi Mu Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Kappa Lambda, and an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota, and Kappa Kappa Psi. He is immediate past president of the College Band Directors National Association.

Dr. Peterson was the first to receive the Doctor of Music degree in wind conducting from Northwestern University and earned Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Arizona State University. In 2012 he was awarded the prestigious Ithaca College Faculty Excellence Award, recognizing his contributions to Ithaca College. His ensembles have appeared before national conventions of the American Bandmaster’s Association, the College Band Director’s National Association, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the American School Band Director’s Association, at Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and at Lincoln Center.

Dr. Anthony C. MarinelloEvaluator/Clinician

Dr. Anthony C. Marinello, III serves as Director of Bands at Illinois State University where he is the conductor and music director of the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and Symphonic Winds. In addition to his conducting responsibilities, he leads the graduate wind conducting program and teaches undergraduate courses in instrumental conducting. He joined the faculty at Illinois State University after serving at The University of Texas at Austin as the Assistant Director of the Longhorn Band and Director of the Longhorn Pep Band. Prior to his appointment at The University of Texas, Marinello served on the faculty of Virginia Tech as Assistant Director of Athletic Bands.

Marinello has previously taught in the public schools of Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas and remains committed to serving the music education community as an active guest conductor and clinician. Marinello previously received invitations to the National Band Association’s 2006 Young Conductor Mentor Project and 2008 International Conductors Symposium in Rome, Italy where he conducted La Banda dell’Esercito (Italian Army Band).

Marinello holds the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Louisiana State University, the Master of Music Degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Michael FanslerEvaluator/Clinician

Mike Fansler is Director of Bands and conductor of the Wind Ensemble and Chamber Winds at Western Illinois University, where he also teaches graduate wind conducting and literature and various undergraduate music education courses. He joined the faculty in 2001 and is currently Professor of Music.

Dr. Fansler has conducted in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Holland, and throughout the United States, where has made guest adjudicating and conducting appearances with numerous high school and honor bands. He has lectured on the music of Percy Grainger at the Midwest Clinic and received a grant to visit the Grainger Museum in Melbourne to further study Grainger’s music and life. During a sabbatical in 2012, Dr. Fansler

taught and lectured at the Universidade Federale de Bahia, the Colégio Militar de Salvador, and the Universidade Católica de Salvador during a month long residency in Brazil.

Under his direction, the Western Illinois Wind Ensemble has performed internationally (Brazil) and been featured at the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Conference, the College Band Directors National Association’s North Central Conference, and twice at the prestigious Armour Stage in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. Together, the wind ensemble and he have released five compact discs: “Live in Chicago” (2006), “Till Eulenspiegel” (2007), “The Promise of Living” (2008) “Words of Love” (2010), and “IV” Maslanka’s fourth symphony (2012).

Dr. Fansler received his education from Schenectady County Community College, James Madison University, Syracuse University, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has held similar teaching positions at Idaho State University, Mars Hill College (NC), and Sullivan East High School (TN). His main musical influences are James F. Keene, Daniel Schmidt, Larry Clark, Ronald Caravan, Gunnar Mossblad, Merry FitzRandolph, and William Meckley.

His professional memberships include the American Bandmasters Association (2012), College Band Directors National Association, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, Illinois Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He resides in Avon, IL with his wife Abby and three kids, Jordan, Jessie, and Juliet.

Dr. Mallory Thompson Evaluator/Clinician

Dr. Mallory Thompson is director of bands, professor of music, and coordinator of the conducting program at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university’s history to hold the director of bands position, she conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program. Prior to this appointment, Thompson held similar positions at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, University of South Florida, Oberlin Conservatory and Bucknell University. She has released recordings with the University of Cincinnati Wind Symphony and the Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Thompson received a bachelor of music education degree and master of music degree in conducting from Northwestern University. She received a doctor of musical arts degree in conducting from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Donald Hunsberger. Thompson maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, clinician, and guest lecturer throughout the United States and Canada. She has appeared as a conductor or clinician at College Band Directors National Association regional and national conventions, the Midwest Clinic, the Interlochen Arts Academy, and the Aspen Music Festival, and she has conducted the United States Army Field Band, the United States Air Force Band, the Dallas Wind Symphony, and the Symphony Silicon Valley. Her professional affiliations include Pi Kappa Lambda, the Music Educators National Conference, the College Band Directors Association, and the American Bandmasters Association.

Camilla M. Stasa Master of Ceremonies, Performance A - Featured Venue - Carter Gym

Camilla Stasa is currently the Director of Participant Relations & Special Projects at Music for All (Bands of America). She was most recently the Associate Director of Admissions at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.

A graduate of Eastern Michigan University, she taught in secondary schools prior to her arrival at Bands of America in 1989. Originally hired as Director of Operations for BOA, her job description evolved into the “sales” director of Music for All which she held until April 2010.

Cam has been the Master of Ceremonies at the Chicagoland Invitational Concert Band Festival since 2003. For over 20 years, she has announced the Lake Park Lancer Joust, a high school marching band competition held annually on the campus of Lake Park High School in Roselle, IL. In fall of 2016, Cam had the privilege to announce the 51st Annual State of Illinois Invitational High School Marching Band Championship at Illinois State University.

In March 2014, Cam was inducted into the Bands of America Hall of Fame joining the ranks of William Revelli, John Paynter, Gary Green, Greg Bimm, Kenneth Snoeck, and others that have been recognized for their impact on Bands of America, the nation’s largest and most influential national music education organization in support of active music making.

Illinois State University Symphonic WindsThe mission of the Illinois State University Bands is to promote and foster the highest artistic achievement in music-making, music learning, and musical experience for our student musicians and our patrons. We will create a diverse educational environment that addresses the needs of our future performers, educators, and scholars with a commitment to the growth of each individual as an artist.

We will promote the growth of the wind band medium by carefully creating concert experiences for our students and audiences that uphold essential histories and traditions, but also innovatively look to future possibilities. We will support recognized and promising composers and seek out new opportunities for creative collaborations.

The Illinois State University Bands will strive to become a cultural destination for the university and its surrounding community by maintaining a welcoming environment for students across campus and the community at large. We will expand the impact of Illinois State University through outreach, service, and leadership at the community, state, national, and international levels.

Anthony MarinelloDirector of Bands—Illinois State University

Anthony C. Marinello, III serves as Director of Bands at Illinois State University where he is the conductor and music director of the Illinois State University Wind Symphony and Symphonic Winds. In addition to his conducting responsibilities, he leads the graduate wind conducting program and teaches courses in instrumental conducting. He joins the faculty at Illinois State University

from The University of Texas at Austin, where he is currently completing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting. Before pursuing his graduate studies at The University of Texas, he served on the faculty of the Butler School of Music as Assistant Director of the Longhorn Band, Director of the Longhorn Pep Band, and Assistant to the Director of Bands. Prior to his appointment at The University of Texas, Marinello served on the faculty of Virginia Tech as Assistant Director of Athletic Bands.

Marinello has previously taught in the public schools of Louisiana, Ohio, and Texas. Marinello received invitations to the National Band Association’s 2006 Young Conductor Mentor Project and 2008 International Conductors Symposium in Rome, Italy where he conducted La Banda dell’Esercito (Italian Army Band). In 2011, he received an invitation to the West Point Conducting Workshop where he conducted the West Point Band. Marinello holds the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Louisiana State University and the Master of Music Degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

On a Personal Note…

I would like to extend my personal thanks to each of you for your support and participation in the Festival. My heart is filled with appreciation for the outpouring from vthe parents in the band program. I know that many of you worked more than one shift, or all day--with a smile and willingness to help, for which we are always so grateful. I hope you found the day to be fun! It’s a great way to get to know the students, other band parents, plus other band programs. Please know that every helping hand that you offered was a positive reflection toward the good of this festival.

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the dedicated members of the Festival Committee who have given many hours of their time since November to make this event run like a well oiled machine. It is the fortitude of each person and the careful attention to their jobs which makes the difference. It has been my honor to serve with you. Thanks to our amazing students and parents who contributed to make the festival run smoothly. We needed all of you and are very appreciative of all that you continually do for the band program. Thank you, Mr. C, for your numerous hours of organization and preparation for the festival, in addition, for your dedication to our students and a high quality band program. • John Hersey Symphonic Band has been accepted to perform at the Illinois Superstate Concert Band Festival every year since 2001, including the achievement of ‘Honor Band’ in 2004, 2012, and 2017. Symphonic Band performed as Superstate Honor Band last May 2018

• Symphonic Band featured at the Illinois Music Educators Association Convention in 2003

• Jazz Ensembles named Grand Champions at the Jazz in the Meadows Festival in 2003 and 2005

• Purdue University Jazz Festival Honor Bands 2002-2004, 2006-2014

• Performances at the 2004 and 2007 Bands of America National Concert Band Festival

• John Philip Sousa Foundation Sudler Flag of Honor Recipient

• Grammy Signature School

• Symphonic Band performed at the 61st Annual Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic in 2007

• University of Illinois Marching Illini Festival Parade, Field, Grand Champions 2006, 2008, 2009

• In 2009, first high school band from the U.S. invited to perform at the Festival des Anches d’Azur in La Croix Valmer, France

• Performances at Orchestra Hall in Chicago Symphony Center 2010, 2012, and 2017

• In 2011, Hersey bands performed in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall

• In 2013, Hersey bands toured Italy, performing outdoors in Piazza San Biagio in Sacrofano; Chiostro del Buon Pastore in Rome; and Piazza del Popolo in Vittorio Veneto, hometown of Mr. C’s family.

• Participation in the Chamber Music National Festival in Indianapolis by our Woodwind Quintet and Saxophone Quintet March 2015

• National Winner in the Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence National Wind Band Honors Competition, Summer 2015.

• On April 1, 2016, the Hersey Band performed in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage in Carnegie Hall, New York City. The band was joined on stage by the Hersey choirs and Orchestra. This remarkable event was a first for all of Hersey’s musical groups to travel together.

• Symphonic Band performed at College Band Directors National Association, North Central Conference held at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI on February 23, 2018. John Hersey was the only High School band invited to perform.

• In June, 2018, the John Hersey Band Program toured Italy performing 4 concerts at venues in local towns including Sacrofano and Vittorio Veneto, the hometown of Mr. C’s family

• On March 5, 2020, the JHHS bands performed on the stage of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Hersey played along with the Woodson HS bands in an incredible musical tribute to the legacy of John Casagrande..

One Last Note

In 1999, Scott J. Casagrande became Director of Bands at Hersey High school. Mr. Casagrande (“Mr. C.” as he is known by the students) was previously Director of Bands at Plainfield High School (1991 to 1999) and also at Stephen Decatur High School (1988 to 1991). Mr. C., a native of Fairfax County, Virginia, received his B.S. and M.S. in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has completed additional coursework at North Central College, University of Miami and VanderCook College of Music, and has earned numerous awards and honors during his distinguished career. Mr. Casagrande was inducted into the prestigious American Bandmasters Association in 2009. He has been published in The Instrumentalist and the National Band Association Journal.

Mr. Casagrande is currently the Music For All Educational Consultant and The National Band Association President. Mr. Casagrande was named the Phi Beta Mu Illinois Outstanding Bandmaster of 2017.
