Re-Launching of PMI’s Chicagoland chapter Newsletter “PMI Insights” a Success!

The culmination of the relaunch of PMI Chicagoland’s PMI Insights newsletter at the Carlisle Banquets in Lombard during the March 11 dinner meeting produced great results and valuable feedback. Annette Harris, M.S., the chapter’s Director of Communications, polled the audience during the relaunch on both their knowledge and use of the Insights newsletter.

She found the vast majority of the audience – including new chapter members – read Insights and find it a valuable resource. The newsletter data analytics confirm this, added Harris.

The click-through rate - defined as how many unique or individual email addresses click on a link within an e-mail, - averaged 19% for Insights during the 3 month relaunch time period. That’s nearly 10% more than in 2014! The industry average click-through rate for non-profit associations is 8.12%, PMI Insights is averaging well over twice that rate.

In an interview with Lawrence Witham, PMI Chicagoland’s Vice President of Operations, MBA, PMP, Larry described how and why the newsletter is an important benefit for PMI Chicagoland members and outlined his vision for the future of PMI Insights. Here is what he had to say…

Q. Why is the newsletter an important benefit for PMI Chicagoland Chapter members?

A. The Chicagoland chapter newsletter is for anyone in the Chicago area with an interest in the project management (PM) profession and discipline. It is a window into the most current thinking and activities around project, program and portfolio management in the Chicago-area community. If someone wants to know what training or knowledge sharing and network-ing events are going on locally, this is the best place to go. In addition, it communicates the latest concepts and ideas being discussed by thought leaders in the local PM community. For members to have this delivered to them on a regular basis is like an alert or reminder during their busy day, to help them keep cur-rent in their profession.

Q. Why was the relaunch of the newsletter a priority for the chapter board?

A. It is important to provide value to chapter membership, as well as promote the PM profession throughout the Chicagoland Area. We see the relaunch as an important part of our responsibility to members. We want to be sure we are meeting the changing needs of our membership. What was relevant a few years ago may not be as applicable today. In our fast-paced, changing profession, we need to get information. The new newsletter format does just that. In addition, we are interested in taking project management to the next level of professionalism and excellence in the Chicago business community. The new newsletter is a very professional-looking publication that members should feel proud to reference within their organization as an authoritative publication in project management.

"The newsletter is one of the important faces

of the PMI Chicagoland chapter to the business community. We want to

make sure that it does more than just remain "relevant.” We want it to be the

leading edge of Project Management Professionalism in Chicagoland.”

Q. What expectations do you have for the future of the newsletter?

A. “We would like project management professionals in Chicagoland to think of the chapter newsletters as one of their best tools for furthering their career, whether it be for finding the most relevant training they can get locally, keeping them informed of highlighted job opportunities or just helping to keep abreast of what is going on in latest thought leadership in the local PM community. The newsletter is one of the important faces of the PMI Chicagoland chapter to the business community. We want to make sure that it does more than just remain "rel-evant.” We want it to be the leading edge of Project Management Professionalism in Chicagoland.”

As a reminder to both new and long-standing members of the PMI Chicagoland Chapter, PMI Insights is an excellent resource that provides the PMI Chicagoland members with the following:

• The best source for local and global PMI news and events• A leading provider of opportunities to earn free PDUs• A primary networking connection between members, PMI

Global and the Chicagoland chapter• A leading source of project management best practices and

industry trends• An excellent source for Knowledge Sharing events throughout

Chicagoland, and• The leading link to employment resources and volunteer

opportunities

According to Harvard's Shawn Achor, in his book, The Happiness

Advantage, "Happiness is the precursor to success, not merely

the result ... happiness and optimism can actually fuel

performance and achievement". Unfortunately PM professionals

are generally NOT happy at work. It's time to inspire PM

professionals to respond to unrealistic schedules and

inadequate budgets with a new “can do” positive attitude. This

workshop will inspire you by incorporating the "Happiness

PMIEF Educational Foundation Awards Grant to Ladies of Virtue

“This partnership is bigger than titles and awards in professional development and project management…it’s truly about new friendships, growth, sincerity, respect, and love and

commitment to our fellow human beings.”

– Tjuan Smith, PMI Director of Social Outreach

According to Tjuan Smith, Director of Social Outreach, and PMIEF Liaison for PMI Chicagoland, the Chapter is pleased to strengthen its monetary support and partner-ship with Ladies of Virtue (LOV). Under the guidance of Mr. Fred Barrett, the Ladies of Virtue submitted the application and was awarded the PMIEF Educational Foundation Grant in the amount of $6,900 for the LOV Cares initiative.

The initiative utilizes the “Project Management Skills for Life” training course along with different interactive drills to teach project initiation, planning, execution, moni-tor/control and close out, over a 9-month time frame. The program is designed to help young girls ages 10-18, develop life skills that embodies a solid foundation of character, relationships, education, health, confidence, and positive body image consciousness.

“We value volunteering our project management skills to help our youth and have joined forces with LOV to be a part of the LOV Cares team” said Smith. During the month of June, Smith added that LOV project teams will be presenting to a commu-nity panel on the topic ‘Boosting Self Esteem & Promoting Individuality’. The panel will select a winner and the winning team will be awarded a LOV Prize, and also have the opportunity to present their presentation at a future PMI Chicagoland Dinner meeting.

“These opportunities offers tremendous growth…recently at the Cambridge School of Chicago, I was very surprised and proud to see 3 of the 4 LOV girls are now leading project managers this year. This is very exciting," said Smith, "we are looking forward to giving these young women the opportunity to showcase their projects at another event this summer.”

The PMI Chicagoland’s Community Outreach, Social Outreach team states it’s looking forward to another amazing year of partnership with LOV in 2015-2016. Jamila Trimuel, Founder & President, of Ladies of Virtue is said to serve as a ‘beacon of light’ for transforming lives that are destined for greatness. “This partnership is bigger than titles and awards in professional development and project management, says Smith, “it’s truly about new friendships, growth, sincerity, respect, and love and commitment to our fellow human beings.” In addition to support from the PMI Chicagoland Chapter, in the past the LOV program has been supported by Niketown, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rose, and Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jackson. The Advisors for the 2015 LOV’s Care Project are Thomas Warner, Cynthia Cobb, Erwin Hill, Trinia Tabb, and Antione Taylor. We welcome them aboard!

Presentation Abstract:Organizations around the world are introducing Agile values and principles to improve the culture of their workforce and their responsiveness in an ever-demanding market-place. After increasing budgets and spending for outside experts and coaches, many are not achieving the results promised. Based on the book “Becoming a Catalyst: Scrum Master Edition,” this presentation will introduce the importance of finding people in the organization to accelerate sustainable and meaningful change from the inside-out.

During this session, attendees will learn:

• The need to encourage, coach, promote, and reward “catalysts” – people brave enough to resist the status quo and accelerate the change to greater agility and responsiveness.

• What characteristics should we promote, develop and coach with our catalysts. We’ll focus on the Scrum Master but cover other roles as well.

• How to use everyday interactions and ceremonies to accelerate culture change.

• How to use a “values and principles” approach to coaching leaders in an Agile envi-ronment so they can become catalysts in our new culture.

• How do we keep our catalysts healthy while tackling daunting systemic dysfunction and releasing organizational “scar tissue”.

• What real agility “feels” like?

Speakers Bio:Len Lagestee is an experienced software and web development practitioner. In 2004, Len found his passion with Agile methodologies and became a practitioner, coach, and evangelist while performing many roles in the technology field. In 2011 he became a full time Agile Coach, Consultant, and Trainer, and is currently Principal Consultant and Coach for The Illustrated Agile Company.

As an Agile Coach, Len interacts with large organizations to connect people, revolutionize leadership, deliver results, and humanize the workforce. Len has recently authored his first book, Becoming a Catalyst: Scrum Master Edition (www.becomingacatalyst.com) and is also blogging about his experiences and insights into helping companies strive for greater agility at Illustrated Agile (www.illustratedagile.com).

APRIL 2015PMI Insights

Volunteering is the backbone of the PMI organization. The PMI Chicagoland Chapter values and appreciates each volunteer for their time, efforts and expertise. The Chapter Volunteer team will be running a series of Volunteer Spotlights to acknowledge and share individual’s perspective on volunteering with the Chapter and giving back to the profession. This month’s Spotlight is on Louisa J. Kim (VP Membership) who has served for 4 years in different volunteer leadership roles (Mentor - Fall 2011, Mentor – Spring 2012, Director Mentoring and PMI Chicagoland Director of the Year 2012-2013, Director Mentorship 2013-2014, VP of Membership and Group Lead Mentorship 2014-2015).

The team had the opportunity to interview Louisa about her volunteer service, and here are the highlights of the conversation…

PMI Chicagoland Volunteer Services

Louisa Kim

Volunteer Team: Why do you choose to volunteer?Louisa: Initially, I became a volunteer with PMI Chicagoland to be a mentor. I have a passion for mentoring and when I learned the chapter was looking for volunteer mentors, I signed up. Combining activities I was already committing my time to, namely project management and mentoring, fueled my desire to see where combining these efforts together would take me.

Volunteer Team: Why is it so important to you to be a volunteer leader? Louisa: Having the position and authority to create opportunities for others and to see other volunteers serving in a capacity that enriches their experience, in some way large or small, is a phenomenal experience! By serving in a leadership role, I can help open doors for others who are discovering their passions, pursuing goals or even experimenting with new ideas.

Volunteer Team: What is your most rewarding volunteer experience?Louisa: Enabling and supporting an environment of play and creativity, providing a place for people to feel free and be inspired, empowering others to test and prove themselves and their ideas. These are hugely rewarding experiences for me. There is alsothe reciprocal effect of widening my views and opening my mind to see more possibilities. I cherish every experience that allows me to follow the best advice about living life that I ever received, which was from my father: “Keep a wide open mind and keep a wide open heart. If you do this, you will find your way.”

Volunteer Team: What suggestions would you offer volunteers new to the Chapter?Louisa: There are opportunities galore, but these are not always well defined or well communicated. This is not by design – we’re not trying to make it difficult! If our leadership tried to define, list and post every *possible* volunteer opportunity, we would not be able to tend to our main duties and responsibilities. We need volunteers to help us with this, too!

There are many activities, programs and events. There are even just operational functions of the chapter that need volunteer support. Some areas are ready to take their programs to the next level, but lack the volunteers to make it happen. Thehe best way to experience the chapter and find volunteer opportunities is to explore. All of our leaders are volunteers..

Prospective volunteers should start exploring by talking to leaders and other volunteers personally and find out about what they do and why they do it. In most cases, a simple email is all that is needed to get started. The key to getting connected as a volunteer is to find a place where you can contribute. Do you share a common understanding or desire to do something you see being done? Something not being done that you want to do?

“common” + “compatible” = “connection”

Those not sure where to start can begin by emailing our Director of Volunteers, Ura Puranda ([email protected]).

Volunteer Team: If you had one volunteer wish; what would it be?Louisa: Volunteers to lead and support a Group Mentorship program! My vision for this program is for it to create a wide variety of special interest groups and focus groups for people to connect with at the Chapter. Our Chapter is very large, and it can be a daunting challenge for those who are not familiar with how to navigate it. I think Groups would be a fantastic way to make it easier to network and learn from each other as professionals with the added benefit of a more personable and accessible way to connect with and be recognized at PMI Chicagoland. Who wants to be a part of creating this opportunity at our Chapter? Anyone? You? Email me at [email protected].

To find out more about the Chicagoland Chapter volunteer opportunities, please contact the Director of Volunteers at [email protected]

Chapter LeadershipThe Leadership Team consists of two groups. There is an elected Executive Board made up of the President, Past President and Vice Presidents. The primary function of this board is to set the strategic plan for the chapter and to oversee the execution of that plan by the Directors and their volunteers. The Directors are appointed by the Executive Board and are responsible for the execution of the strategic plan through the tactical day to day operation of the chapter. The Directors coordinate the efforts of chapter member volunteers to accomplish the activities of the chapter. If you are interested in serving your PMI Chicagoland Chapter, contact our Director of Volunteers for more information.
