With a presence in the region since 1978, the UAE has evolved into a key player in Thales’ target markets on a global scale. The Group’s vision in the UAE is to bring security, safety and growth; whilst evolving state sovereignty, providing sustainable economic development, and fostering provincial talent.

The Group, a long-term partner of the UAE armed forces, has developed its local presence in the country through numerous joint ventures and partnerships. This has allowed the Group to expand its local footprint, to be able to adapt and meet customer needs and, crucially, to develop talents through the means of high-level professional & academic training programmes.

Local cooperation

Thales’ strategy encompasses strategic topics with the aim of promoting local expansion in emerging countries. This is of paramount importance as it allows the Group to attain its ambitious objectives. Joint ventures and academic partnerships form the core approach for the cooperative relationships in the UAE:

Since 2009, the joint venture Thales Advanced Solutions (TAS) - a subsidiary of Emirates Defence Industries Company (EDIC) - has developed an expertise in four business segments: SATCOM, Radar, Radio / Network and Support.

Leveraging from its shareholders capabilities (C4 Advanced Solutions and Thales), TAS brings a unique capability for local projects execution including offset to the UAE Defence market.

Through these diversified activities, TAS positions itself as an employer of choice for Emirati in the field of Defence Electronics and Security. TAS therefore contributes towards realizing UAE's long-term strategy for developing local industry, providing knowledge and technology transfer, training and local employment opportunities.

CERT Thales Institute: A partnership has been established since 2002 between the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and Thales; the objectives of this agreement are in line with the UAE’s governmental strategy to develop and

Industry focus

Defence

Defence related projects account for roughly 60% of the overall activity in the Middle East, with naval systems, surveillance radars and communications of principal importance. This market is pivotal to the region’s present and future success as it is predicted that defence expenditure in the Middle East will sustain annual growth of 7% from 2015 through to 2017. This significance is clearly reflected within the UAE, with first-class exhibitions and conferences including the IDEX/NAVDEX exhibition in Abu Dhabi and the Dubai Air show.

Products and solutions that Thales supplies for the UAE’s defence market include:

Mirage 2000-9 – Thales supplies on-board electronic systems to the United Arab Emirates Air Force for the Mirage jet fighter, including the Group’s SLAR 2000 radar pod, TV/CT CLDP laser designator pod, Topsight helmet-mounted display and sighting system.

Crotale MK3 – The Crotale short range air defence system, supplied with three Counter Battery Radars (COBRA), is supplied by Thales as a result of its membership to the Euro-Art international EWIV joint venture).

Ground Air Transmit Receive system (GATR) – Ground-to-air communication systems; supplying data links to the UAE Armed Forces.

PR4G F@stnet – A VHF medium distance range tactical radio communication product with simultaneous voice & IP produced by Thales supplied to the UAE.

Through its local joint venture Thales Advanced Solutions (TAS), Thales supplies the UAE Armed Forces with secured communications (Credit – Thales)

Sonar suite – Compromising of one Captas-2 Variable-Depth Sonar (VDS) and a UMS 4110 hull mounted sonar (HMS), this technology equips the Abu Dhabi Class in the naval domain.

Transportation

In service since 2009, the Dubai metro is the longest driverless metro in the world, offering optimal life-cycle costs due to low maintenance overheads and operating costs. It is equipped with an entire package of Thales solutions including:

SelTrac® CBTC signalling solution

An integrated telecommunications, security, passenger information system

An Operation Control and Supervision system

Demonstrating world-class systems integration capabilities, Thales also provides a complete end-to-end fare collection solution, including car park management and an advanced multimodal ticketing system. With up to 250,000 transactions per day, the system manages special fares for students, senior citizens and disabled passengers – all being achieved with a single central processing system. Furthermore, Thales has also bestowed:

160 ticket vending machines

Approximately 400 access gates

30 portable checking machines

More recently, the Group has been awarded a five year service-level agreement with Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Serco to provide maintenance support services to the metro network. In 2014, CERT Thales Institute (CTI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aim of establishing a Rail Academy in the UAE. Dedicated to the creation and deployment of high-level professional & academic programmes, the partnership will support main line rail and urban transport development projects in the region, thus ameliorating the productive capacity of the new generation.

Security

Thales has supplied Dubai and Abu Dhabi with some of the most advanced security and telecommunication systems on the planet, making the UAE a safer place. Significant projects include:

Dubai International airport Terminal 3 concourse 2 and concourse A – In January 2013, Thales delivered an ultra-modern communication and security solution to Concourse A, the new dedicated A380 airside facility in Dubai International Airport. Thales has been responsible for integrating all the systems needed to deliver a fully interlinked and connected 600,000m² building with end-to-end security.

Cybersecurity systems – In 2013, Injazat Data Systems and Thales began their alliance by working on an advanced and innovative cybersecurity system which will be offered to UAE companies. Injazat and Thales are now working together to address the key cyber risks that businesses face on a daily basis, whilst helping strengthen company cybersecurity operations.

More recently, Thales has been able to sign important contracts affecting not only the UAE but the Gulf region itself. Thales Group has partnered with Abu Dhabi Ship Building to provide maintenance, repair services to naval forces across the region as it diversifies away from vessel construction.

Aerospace

This sector exhibits Thales as a market leader in the fields of avionics and Air Traffic Management systems, outlining the Group’s capacity to provide a comprehensive end-to-end response to the challenges of air transport. The impressive and fast development of Emirati airlines Emirates and Etihad have increased aerospace-related sales in the region, boosting demand for the Group’s aerospace related solutions and products. Particular emphasis must be placed on the Group’s In-Flight Entertainment systems and connectivity (IFE) which supplies Etihad Airways’ entire Airbus and Boeing fleets. Thales was awarded a contract, in 2008, to supply the whole of the ATM and navigation systems for Abu Dhabi’s International Airport, in addition to its various air traffic radars previously implemented around the country.

In 2015 Etihad selected Thales for its dual configuration Head Up Displays to equip the first 12 aircraft of its new Airbus A350XWB fleet scheduled to be delivered from December 2017 by Airbus. A total of 62 A350XWBs have been ordered by Etihad.

Space

Although the Middle East has a less powerful stance with regards to space technology in comparison to its western peers, both the UAE & Egypt are the region’s primary representatives. In 2007, the Al Yah Satellite Communications Company “Yahsat” awarded a contract to the joint venture composed of Thales Alenia Space and Astrium, in order to build a dual-satellite communications system. Y1A & Y1B satellites were successfully launched in 2011 and 2012 respectively and the systems are now fully operational.

In 2014, Thales officially signed a contract to develop the very-high-resolution payload for the Falcon Eye program, within the scope of a consortium led by Airbus Defense and Space. The contract includes the construction of two satellites and a training programme for UAE-based engineers who will eventually be controlling and operating the satellites once they are in orbit. Falcon Eye optical observation satellites are meant to provide a new capability to the military and represent the most advanced optics that France has ever sold to another country. The aim for the customer is to have state-of-the-art capabilities in Surveillance, Intelligence, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR). The high-resolution Pleiades-types will monitor the entire globe 24/7. Both satellites, weighing less than 1,500 kg each, are to be launched in late 2017 and 2018.
