The collection of threatened Zurbaran paintings at Auckland Castle have been saved thanks to a £15million donation from a locally-born millionaire. The Church Commissioners announced on Wednesday 30th March that they are working towards a new future for Auckland Castle. The proposals have been made possible thanks to the donation from investment manager, Jonathan Ruffer, via The Zurbaran Trust - a new charitable trust set up to ensure the 17th century paintings remain in the town.It is intended that Auckland Castle shall become a leading public heritage site, bringing tourism and economic regenera-tion to the North East. In addition, early conversa-tions are taking place involving the National Trust and Durham County
Council regarding opening up the historic castle and its grounds to provide much greater public access - although further funding needs to be found in order to achieve this. Discussions are also taking place with the Department for Media, Culture & Sport and The Art Fund, as well as the
National Gallery regarding possible loans from the National Collection.Welcoming the Commis-sioners’ public statement Durham County Council leader Cllr Simon Henig said, “In recent months we have been in discussion with the Commissioners and the National Trust to consider a future for Auckland Castle which would put this fabulous asset at the heart of regen-eration proposals for the county. “I believe we now have a once in a lifetime chance to secure a future for the Zurbarans at Auckland Castle and ensure both can be enjoyed by a wider public audience.”The council is currently leading on two important pieces of work involving Auckland Castle. The first is a ‘Statement of Significance,’ which will establish what is special about the castle; it’s importance as an historic and cultural centre. The second is an ‘options study’ of the castle and its grounds. This is being undertaken to establish the possibilities these assets may offer in the future. Both are to be completed before the summer.

system and those concerned with the effect recent budget cuts will have on them. She said, “I want to give people the chance to find out exactly how they will be affected by the sweeping changes that the government have made to welfare benefits. “I also want to help people in debt or worried that they may fall into debt. This is a difficult time for people, with support being taken away from people who need it most.“This session will offer free and impartial advice on a confidential basis for anyone attending.”For more information contact the office of local MP Helen Goodman on 01388 603075, email [email protected] or write to Constitu-ency Office, 1 Cockton Hill Road, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, DL14 6EN.

When a student, at Bishop Barrington School recently asked her teacher, Charlotte Thompson what she thought of Pink Floyd’s song “Another brick in the wall”, it gave some of the staff a great idea for raising money for Comic Relief. Bishop Barrington students, like many schools, have been very generous when it comes to raising money, so this song led to a novel way of expressing interest in a musical legend in a modern day setting.Students at the school all paid £1 to “buy” a brick. A member of the school site team, Bret Osborne is a qualifi ed bricklayer and he built a wall using the bricks bought by the pupils. By the end of the day, the school had raised a mag-
nifi cent £1,100.Charlotte said,” I was quite stunned when I was asked about the Pink Floyd song, as it was clearly not the most complimentary assessment of education. However, it turned out to
have a very positive effect by leading to this fantastic contribution by our young people. Building the wall not only supports Comic Relief, it provides a work of art that the school can be proud of.”

As spring approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is encouraging blood donors old and new to make use of the longer days and help save lives.Easter is a time to celebrate new life and what better way to breathe new life into those who need your help the most than by giving just an hour of your time to give blood? Darren Bowen, Lead Donor Relations Manager
at NHSBT said, “With this year’s Royal Wedding taking place as well as the normal Easter holidays, we need to make sure blood stocks remain healthy over both bank holiday weekends. “So what better way to celebrate than by offering patients in local hospitals life saving blood?”Anyone aged over 17, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12 lbs) and in
general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. A session is to be held at the Scout Centre on Kingsway, Bishop Auckland, on Thursday 14th April between 2.30pm and 3.45pm - and again from 4.30pm to 7pm.To book an appointment call the Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk .

Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Part-nership is offering support to a project which will get people to think smarter about their finances. The AAP is helping to develop the Durham County Credit Union which offers financial services as an alternative to door step lending or loan sharks. The project will be delivered by a dedicated team of volunteers supported by a develop-ment worker and will benefit all members of the local community. It’s hoped the project, which will concentrate on the Woodhouse Close community, will
support people in need of immediate help and could see savings schemes set up in local primary schools to hit the message home at an early age. Councillors June Lee and John Lethbridge are supporting the Credit Union with £2,500 via the AAP.Michele Armstrong, chair of the AAP board, said, “In these difficult times we need to ensure credit unions get our full support and the more people know about this valuable service the better.”For information and advice contact Durham County Credit Union on 0191 375 7677 or email [email protected].

Double award for BATH
Five young actors from Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (BATH) have been awarded the Durham County High Sheriff’s Award for their part in an award-winning short film.Jake Jarratt, Jordan Hymas, Michael Webstell, Katie Rewcastle and Grace Davidson starred in the production ‘But It’s Legal’ - a film about the dangers of lethal highs. The short movie, which was produced by Teeny Tiny Films, won
the prestigious Royal Television Society Award for Best Non-Broadcast Factual Film on Saturday, March 12th.The film was up against some other powerfully emotional films, and it was a surprise to the production team when they were announced as winners, but the film, which highlights the conse-quences of selling and using drugs, was a hit with the judges. They commented
that the film was “A very effective myth busting film for a young audience.” Stephen Elliott, founder and leader of BATH said, “BATH rarely enter awards or their work into compe-titions. Without the lead from Teeny Tiny Films, our young people would not have received this tremendous accolade.“We are always grateful to perform work that represents real issues that affect our community.”

Fundraiser on a mission!Julie Nisbet, a Fundraiser for Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland, is well and truly on a mission to help support the hospice that she has come to know and love.Julie is pushing herself to the absolute limit this year in aid of the Hospice. In April she is taking part in the Paris Marathon and only a few days later will be hitting the pavements again; this time as a runner in the Virgin London Marathon.Julie is keeping up the pace planning to take part in a skydive and a bungee jump later this year, and in September she has signed up as part of the team trekking in Peru! If that wasn’t enough to deserve a well-earned rest; the fearless fundraiser has signed herself up to top off her mammoth year of fundraising by doing yet another marathon.Julie said, “I’ve been running for a couple of years since entering the Great North Run in 2008. By 2010, I felt like I needed to challenge myself more, and decided to enter the first Kielder Marathon which took place in October 2010. It was
my first marathon, and despite being a difficult run, it was exhilarating. “After this, I decided to push myself to the limit in 2011. I wanted to raise the profile of Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland, a cause I am very passionate about.”
Julie has set up a JustGiving page on which she hopes to raise £3,000 or more. Visit http://www.justgiv ing.com/butter-wickbigone/ for Julie’s own story and to donate to her epic adventures this year!
Talented art teacher Jonathon Carney has landed himself with a labour of love in Bishop Auckland. Jonathon, who teaches at Bishop Barrington School has been commissioned to design a wide range of art work for the new 2000 capacity stadium at Bishop Auckland Football Club.“The Heritage Project,” as it is known, will see specific art work produced for three different areas. General collage and detailed work will be produced for the Function Room and a range of posters will be wall-mounted in the tunnel. But the most exciting display will be in the directors’
room. Here, all of the history of the club will be on show ranging back through the years and the successes that the club has seen. Posters, England amateur football caps, shirts programmes and other memorabilia will be gracing the walls of the roomJonathon said, “When club chairman Terry Jackson asked me if I would like to take on this project, I was both elated and honoured. There is a fantastic history to this club which has always been judged as one of the best amateur clubs in the country. I am determined that the final displays will show how great this club really is.”
