ASHRAE Announces Energy Modeling Conference, Call for Presenters

ATLANTA – An upcoming ASHRAE specialty conference seeks to advance the industry’s ability to moreaccurately model and simulate a building’s energy use.

ASHRAE’s Energy Modeling Conference – Tools for Designing High Performance Buildings is slated forOct. 1-3, 2012 in Atlanta. The conference will guide building design professionals about what does anddoes not work when using currently available modeling tools to design and analyze buildings and theirenergy using systems.

“The conference will provide the design professional with ‘workarounds’ that may be applied toimprove the results of their modeling results when their modeling tool of choice may not be capable ofmodeling some of the more unique or hybrid buildings or energy using systems being used in highperformance buildings today,” Dennis Knight, conference chair, said.

With a focus on case studies and real world examples, the conference will allow an exchange of ideasamong design professionals and software developers to facilitate understanding of current modelingtools and their capabilities and limitations and identify the need for new tools and improvements toexisting modeling and simulation tools. The conference will guide design professionals towarddeveloping in-house modeling checklists and quality control procedures to improve their competenceand confidence in making decisions and recommendations based on modeling in their day-to-daypractices.

Building on the successful Energy Modeling Conference format in April 2011, this conference will beginwith an interactive session with modeling software developers presenting common modeling scenarioson how their specific software can model a scenario, whether there are any limitations and what mightbe the best work around and exceptional modeling practices to obtain acceptable results when the toolcannot model the scenario out-of-the-box.

Call for PresentersASHRAE seeks presentations on case studies and actual projects and how they were analyzed anddesigned using modeling tools as well as integrated and interoperable modeling tools to best optimizebuildings and energy-using systems. Presentation abstracts are requested on the following topics:• HVAC load analysis• Energy modeling• Side-by-side software provider presentations on their ability to address specific modeling

system types and applications and energy simulation programs• Code and standards compliance issues• ENERGY STAR, LEED® and other high performance building guidelines’ impacts on models• Innovative system modeling: chilled beams, water source heat pumps, renewables, variable

refrigerant flow, cogeneration, labyrinths, electronically commutated motors• Integration of analytic modeling tools with building information modeling• Exceptional modeling techniques for when tools just do not work• Simplified and rapid modeling techniques that may be applied for early analysis.• Integration of daylighting, computational fluid dynamics and other exceptional modeling

techniques and results into HVAC simulations• Life cycle cost analysis

O&M Mini-Conference Featured in ASHRAE 2012 Winter Conference Tech Program

ATLANTA—With low and zero energy buildings becoming more prevalent, there are many issues thatarise with installation, startup, commissioning and operations and maintenance. To help ensure that thedesign intent of these more complicated systems is understood, an O&M “mini-conference” is beingoffered as part of ASHRAE’s 2012 Winter Conference, Jan. 21-25.

The mini-conference takes place Jan. 22-23 and is held in conjunction with the Technical Program of theASHRAE Winter Conference, Palmer House Hilton, Chicago, Ill. The mini-conference kicks off with adebate on building operations and several sessions addressing current practices and tools.

“The mini-conference offers an opportunity to have an in-depth conversation for interestedprofessionals in an abbreviated period of time,” Sarah Maston, Technical Program track chair ofOperations & Maintenance, said.

The mini-conference addresses lessons learned, improvement of process and team communications andeffort to improve the installation, startup, O&M of HVAC systems.

In particular, the importance of test procedures for HVAC systems for is addressed on Monday, Jan. 23, in“Air-Handling System Leakage: Benefits and Costs of Field Tests.” Such procedures are necessary becauseas much as one third of a system’s airflow can leach through the air distribution system, which can leadto loss of comfort and heating or cooling capacity; increase air conditioning and heating bills; andcontribute to indoor air quality problems. The session highlights the benefits and costs of performingsystem leakage tests from the perspective of a testing, adjusting and balancing contractor, an associationof sheet metal contractors and researchers, as well as an upcoming standard from ASHRAE and the SheetMetal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) pertaining to testing proceduresand requirements for total HVAC system air leakage in commercial buildings. The session is held 8 a.m.-9:30 p.m. at the Palmer House Hilton.

Additional sessions include:• ”What is the Right Degree of Automation in Building Operations: A Debate and Discussion”• ”Has Your TRAINing Left the Station?”• ”Fault Detection and Energy Audits”• ”Energy Savings and Performance Improvements through O&M”• ”Maximizing the Benefits of Commissioning: Incorporating Design Reviews and the Building Envelope

into the Commissioning Scope”• “Vibration Induced Noise and Mechanical Equipment Vibration Isolation, Balance and Predictive

Maintenance”• ”YEA for Air Cleaning!”• ”Approaching Net-Zero and Maintaining Your Course: O&M Tools to Maintain Building Performance”• ”The New Age of Water Treatment for Mixed Metal Systems and High Efficiency Aluminum Boilers” – a

free session to be held at the AHR Expo, McCormick Place

Additionally, the Chicago Virtual Conference is included with a paid Conference registration—compand single day registration excluded—and includes on-demand access to all speakers’ audio presenta-tions synced to their presentations. Attendees and speakers can post comments on the presentationsfor a two-week period following the completion of the Conference. Those not attending the ChicagoWinter Conference in person may register for the Virtual Conference only. Register at www.ashrae.org/chicagovirtual.

Student ActivitiesBy: Josh Yeary, 2011-12 Student Activities Chair

This month of December we are hoping to startreceiving scholarship applications for the DallasChapter of ASHRAE scholarship as well as the PNVinther Scholarship. If you know of any localengineering students that may be interestedplease direct them to our Dallas Chapter website,http://www.dallas-ashrae.org/html/scholarships.php , where we have posted thescholarship applications.

Coming up in the month of January I will berecruiting volunteers to help judge the Future City Competition for the North Texas Region at UTArlington. The goal of this program is to offer a fun way for students to learn about different kinds ofengineering by dealing with the real-world problems associated with creating a livable city of thefuture. Students, working in teams with a volunteer-mentor, first generate a computerized design of afuture city, then build a scale model, research and write an essay on the assigned technical topic, andfinally publicly present their projects to a panel of judges. The Dallas Chapter of ASHRAE, along withthe Fort Worth Chapter, will be donating $100 towards the event.

TEGA News UpdatesBy: Matt Short, 2011-2012 TEGA Officer

“Master’s or Equivalent” Movement Threatens Licensure Requirements

Five years ago, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) adopted amodel “masters or equivalent” (MOE) law that, if adopted by state engineering licensure bodies, wouldrequire all individuals seeking professional engineer licensure in 2015 and thereafter to hold a master’sdegree. Because additional educational requirements (and expense) to pursue PE licensure have neverbeen demonstrated to enhance the health, safety, and welfare of the public and will, in fact, choke offthe pipeline of emerging engineering professionals by discouraging their pursuit of professionallicensure, ASHRAE, working in coalition with a vast array of other engineering and technical societies, isworking to push back against such regulation wherever it may crop up.

Although no state has yet adopted the model law, ASHRAE knows of a handful of states – notably, Illinoisand Maryland – are considering putting these provisions into place. In Illinois, for example, the StructuralEngineering Board is looking at implementing MOE, but that could be a precursor of things to come forother state boards – like the State Board of Professional Engineers. In Maryland, the Free State’s StateBoard for Professional Engineers is also said to be seriously examining adoption of the NCEES model law.ASHRAE has also heard rumblings of activity in Georgia, New Jersey, and Rhode Island.

ASHRAE Government Affairs staff is asking you, as advocacy-minded members, to be on the lookout forrelated developments in your state by following the below steps:1. Look up your state’s licensure board via the NCEES website.2. If available, subscribe to electronic or hard-copy updates of board activities.3. Scan the composition of your respective board for names you know and with whom you might

discuss master’s or equivalent-related issues – there might even be ASHRAE members serving onthose licensing bodies.

4. Review materials available – including talking points – at LicensingThatWorks.org, the Website ofthe aforementioned coalition.

5. Coordinate any communication through your local ASHRAE chapter as to not work at crosspurposes with your colleagues.

6. Notify ASHRAE’s Government Affairs staff as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please contact ASHRAE’s Government Affairs office.
