The King at War:VelázquezʼsPortrait ofPhilip IV.

Painted at the height of Velázquez'scareer, the Frick's King Philip IV of Spain(1644) is one of the artist's consummateachievements. Contemporary chronicles aswell as bills and invoices in Spanisharchives indicate that it was painted in amakeshift studio only a few miles from thefrontlines of a battle, and that it was com-pleted in just three sittings. The work,which shows its subject dressed in militarycostume, an atypical depiction, was sent toMadrid where it was used during a victorycelebration.
