The Andean Tunics 400 BCE–1800 CE

The MET MUSEUM is featuring about thirty Andean tunics drawn from the Museum's collection, as well asloans from the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C., and from a private collection, the exhibition willexamine the form of the tunic, which held an important cultural place in Andean South America for cen-turies, particularly in Peru and northern Bolivia. Textiles, a much developed art form there in ancienttimes, were themselves valued as wealth, and tunics were among the most treasured of textiles.

Highlights will include a Paracas-Necropolis tunic in the so-called linear style with distinctive shoulder fringe (100 B.C.E.–200C.E.), a red Pucara tunic with large shoulder patches, perhaps depicting the face of the sun (200 B.C.E.–200 C.E.), and aseventeenth-century tunic that includes both European lions and tocapu, organized fields of discrete Inka-period designs.Visit: MetMuseum.org

La serie FOCOS de EL MUSEO DELBARRIO presenta a Luis CamnitzerLuis Camnitzer was born in Germany in 1937,grew up in Montevideo, Uruguay and has livedand worked in New York since 1964. Hereceived Guggenheim Fellowships in 1961 and1982 and, has made his mark internationallynot only as an artist but as a critic, educatorand art theorist. Formally allied with theAmerican Conceptualists of the 1960s and1970s, over the past 50 years Camnitzer hasdeveloped an essentially autonomous oeuvre.Through his art Camnitzer often plays with therole of audience as silent witness and accom-plice, within the arts as well as politics, oftendrawing on his youth in Montevideo under arepressive government that the internationalcommunity allowed to persist. LAS GUITARRAS DEPICASSO. 1912-1914:This exhibit focuses on Pablo Picasso’s card-board and sheet-metal Guitar sculptures, andthe incandescent period of material and struc-tural innovation these sculptures bracket inthe artist’s long career.The exhibition takes as its point of departurePicasso’s first Guitar construction, a sculp-ture made between October and December1912. Cobbled together from cardboard,paper, string, and wire—materials he cut,folded, threaded, and glued—Picasso’s silentinstrument resembled no sculpture that hadever been seen before. Its creation coincidedwith Picasso’s embrace of a wide range ofwhat were then unconventional materials,including cardboard,newspaper, wallpaper,sheet music, and sand. In 1914 the artist reit-erated his fragile, papery Guitar constructionin more fixed and durable sheet-metal form.In the early 1970s Picasso donated bothworks to The Museum of Modern Art. * SUMMER OF GOLIATH (VERANO DE GOLIAT) (2010,76min). Director: Nicolás Pereda. Country:Mexico/Canada/Netherlands. Pereda’s SUMMER OF GOLIATHcombines documentary and fiction as it intertwines the stories of peo-ple living in a small town in rural Mexico. Those people include: awoman who believes her husband has left her for another woman; hersoldier son, who hopes that one day he and his soldier partner will beissued machine guns so that they may intimidate passing motorists;and three brothers whose father left them many years ago in the careof their mother, who can barely support them.

* EL VELADOR (2011, 72min). Director: Natalia AlmadaCountry: Mexico. Almada’s documentary EL VELADOR displays theworld of "El Jardin,", a cemetery in the drug heartland of Mexico.Since the war on drugs began in 2007, the cemetery has doubled insize and some of its mausoleums have been built to resemble gaudycathedrals, creating a skyline that looks like a fantastical surrealistcity more than a resting place for the deceased. The film introduces usto both the lives of the cemetery workers and families of the victims- in the shadow of an increasingly bloody conflict that has claimednearly 35,000 lives.
