The past three years saw the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War,during which many new studies and reports offered revelations and refinements to our knowledgeof the conflict. Reflecting that, a number of films in this year’s program are set during the Civil Waror immediately thereafter, and even if they are not concerned directly with conflict, the Civil Warvery much informs the atmosphere, the characters, and the way they act. Alex de la Iglesia’s The Last Circus, for example, begins with a powerful Civil War scene, thenmoves to another era while detailing the lingering influence of that first scene. With no longer aneed to rehash the issues or declare a stand, filmmakers feel a freedom to explore lesser-known,more offbeat aspects of the conflict. This year Spanish Cinema Now also includes a tribute to Agustí Villaronga, one of Spanish cine-ma’s most affecting (and darkest) filmmakers, as well as a rare opportunity to see a masterpieceof the “exiled” Spanish cinema, On the Empty Balcony, courtesy of the Filmoteca Española.

For the ninth installment ofthe Performance ExhibitionSeries: Stop, Repair,Prepare: Variations on Odeto Joy for a PreparedPiano (2008). The piece, which wasacquired by MoMA in 2009and is being publicly per-formed in the Museum forthe first time, was created bythe artist duo Jennifer Allora(b. 1974) and GuillermoCalzadilla (b. 1971), whohave been named the UnitedStates representatives forthe 2011 Venice Biennale.Blending sculpture and per-formance, the artists havecarved a hole in the center ofan early twentieth-centuryBechstein piano, creating avoid in which the performerstands to play the FourthMovement of Beethoven’sNinth Symphony, usuallyreferred to as “Ode to Joy.”For each 30-minute perform-ance, the pianist will leanover the piano’s keyboard, playing upside down andbackwards, while moving theinstrument around theAtrium. The result is a structurallyincomplete version of theode—the hole in the pianorenders two octaves inopera-tive—that fundamentallytransforms both theplayer/instrument dynamicand the signature melody, underlining the contradictionsand ambiguities of a songthat has long been invokedas a symbol of humanist val-ues and national pride.
