PRESENTACIÓNINTRODUCTION

La muestra «Tesoros de las culturas del mundo» continúa la serie de exposiciones que la Comunidad de Madrid y el Canal de Isabel II organizan en el Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal con el propósito de acercar la cultura y el arte a todos los madrileños, ofreciendo los contenidos más didácticos, sin perder de vista el mayor rigor científico y artístico.

Desde su inauguración en 2004 con «Guerreros de Xi’an», y tras las producciones de «Faraón» (2005), «M. C. Escher» (2006), «Roma SPQR» (2007), «Madrid, 2 de mayo 1808-2008» (2008) y «Star Wars, the exhibition» (2008), el Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal ha recibido más de un millón y medio de visitantes.

Esta exposición, creada por el British Museum de Londres, considerado museo de museos, es la primera vez que se organiza en Europa y viaja a España después de un periplo por diversos países de Asia y América, como Japón, China y Canadá, en los que ha tenido un gran éxito de público. Con ella, recala en Madrid el prestigio de una institución única en el mundo, la posibilidad de acercar al público español un patrimonio artístico sin par. Después de más de 250 años desde su fundación, sus colecciones permiten conocer lo que el hombre ha creado y acercarle a su propia historia a través de unos objetos de gran belleza y honda riqueza antropológica.

Asimismo, los selectos fondos del British se completan con la aportación de piezas procedentes del Museo de América de Madrid.

Las más de 280 piezas seleccionadas (desde objetos de la Edad de Piedra y esculturas clásicas de tamaño natural hasta lujosas joyas obtenidas en las excavaciones de la antigua

Mesopotamia; desde dibujos realizados por maestros del Renacimiento hasta piezas contemporáneas de Irán, Japón y otros países) abarcan todas las partes del orbe y los distintos períodos históricos y permiten ofrecer a sus visitantes la historia de las culturas del mundo en un solo recorrido, un paseo o viaje en el tiempo y por todos los rincones del planeta.

Pero, por encima de todo, estas piezas muestran lo ilimitado de la creatividad humana. No es casual su descripción como «tesoros». Cada pieza lo es por un motivo distinto: unas responden al concepto de «tesoros desenterrados», como por ejemplo, las espléndidas joyas obtenidas en las excavaciones de la ciudad antigua de Ur; otras constituyen grandes símbolos, como la escultura contemporánea realizada por la nigeriana Sokari Douglas Camp, muestra de la simbiosis entre la tecnología occidental y la espiritualidad africana.

La presentación de los contenidos se realiza en 7 ámbitos, precedidos por una introducción: «África», «Oriente Medio», «Europa», «Asia», «Oceanía», «Las Américas» y «El mundo moderno». En la línea de las ya realizadas en este Centro, se ha contado con un amplio despliegue escenográfico y visual.

Paralelamente, el Canal de Isabel II presenta un corpus de actividades didácticas dirigidas a niños y adultos, y se edita un importante catálogo donde están recogidas las piezas y en el que se aporta amplia información de las distintas culturas del mundo.

“Treasures of the world’s cultures” continues the series of exhibitions organised by the Community of Madrid and the Canal de Isabel II at the Arte Canal Exhibition Centre with the aim of bringing culture and art to all residents of Madrid, giving the content a more educational focus without losing sight of greater scientific and artistic rigor.

Since its inauguration in 2004 with “Xi’an Warriors”, and after the productions of “Pharaoh” (2005), “M. C. Escher” (2006), “Rome SPQR” (2007), “Madrid, 2nd May 1808-2008” (2008) and “Star Wars, the exhibition” (2008), the Arte Canal Exhibition Centre has welcomed over one and a half million visitors.

It is the first time that this exhibition, created by the British Museum in London, considered as the museum of museums, has been organised in Europe and it has travelled to Spain after a tour of several countries in Asia and America, such as Japan, China and Canada, where it has had great public acclaim. With this exhibition, the prestige of an institution that is unique in the world comes to Madrid, and with it the chance to bring peerless artistic heritage to the Spanish people. Over 250 years after it was founded, the museum’s collections allow visitors to see what man has created and to learn about their own history through objects of great beauty and profound anthropological wealth.

In turn, the exclusive British Museum collection is complemented with pieces from state museums like the Museum of the Americas in Madrid.

Over 280 pieces have been selected (from Stone Age objects and life-sized classic sculptures to splendid jewels found during the excavations of the ancient Mesopotamia; from drawings made by masters of the Renaissance to contemporary pieces from Iran, Japan and other countries), covering all parts of the globe and different historic periods and allowing visitors to trace the history of the world’s cultures in a single journey, tour or trip through time and to all corners of the planet.

Above all, however, these pieces show the limitless nature of human creativity. The description of these objects as “treasures” is no coincidence. Each piece can be described as such for a different reason: some reflect the concept of “unearthed treasures”, like the splendid jewels found during the excavations of the ancient city of Ur; others are important symbols, like the contemporary sculpture created by Nigerian-born Sokari Douglas Camp, which shows the symbiosis between western technology and African spirituality.

The contents are organised into seven sections, preceded by an introduction: “Africa”, “The Middle East”, “Europe”, “Asia”, “Oceania”, “The Americas” and “The modern world”. As to be expected from other exhibitions held at the Centre, there will be impressive set design and visual displays.

Parallel to this, the Canal de Isabel II offers a range of educational activities designed for children and adults, and has written an important catalogue that includes all of the pieces and provides extensive information on the different cultures of the world.

Los selectos fondos del British se completan con la aportación de piezas procedentes de museos de ámbito estatal, como por ejemplo el Museo de América de Madrid.

El objetivo del Canal de Isabel II es ensalzar, prestigiar y completar el discurso científico original y mostrar los «tesoros» de ámbito español, su rico patrimonio, contando cuál es su aportación en un discurso artístico e histórico de carácter universal.

El Canal de Isabel II pretende conferir una personalidad única y singular a la muestra original. Asimismo, la exposición se ha rediseñado y se han adecuado los contenidos a las características de un espacio de personalidad única como el Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal y a la línea en los singulares proyectos expositivos acometidos por el Canal de Isabel II.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE CANAL DE ISABEL II

The exclusive British Museum collection is complemented by pieces from state museums like the Museum of the Americas in Madrid.

The objective of the Canal de Isabel II is to extol, give prestige to and complement the original scientific discourse and to show the rich heritage of “treasures” from Spain, explaining their contribution within a global artistic and historical discourse.

The Canal de Isabel II aims to give a unique and singular personality to the original exhibition. The exhibition has therefore been redesigned and the content has been adapted to the characteristics of a space with its own unique personality like that of the Arte Canal Exhibition Centre and in line with the exceptional productions tackled by the Canal de Isabel II.I.

LA EXPOSICIÓNConcepto expositivo

La exposición presenta, juntas, más de 250 excepcionales piezas pertenecientes a todos los períodos históricos y a los distintos ámbitos geográficos del planeta.

La incomparable colección de piezas que posee el British Museum permite plantear un discurso expositivo que, cronológicamente, se remonta a la Edad de Piedra y finaliza en el mundo actual. Asimismo, desde el punto de vista espacial, permite abarcar el arte realizado por las diversas culturas del mundo.

LA MEMORIA DE LA HUMANIDAD

La amplitud y variedad de la colección de objetos que se muestran aquí es impresionante e incluye algunas de las piezas más famosas del Museo Británico. La exposición refleja las ideas que se esconden detrás de estas piezas sin olvidarse del significado que tenían para quienes las crearon y usaron. A través de estos objetos, podemos ver cómo diferentes pueblos que vivían en distintas partes del mundo en distintos momentos estaban conectados por unas ideas y preocupaciones comunes, como el poder y la política, las creencias religiosas, el comercio y la guerra, la tecnología, el arte y la búsqueda de su identidad.

Las obras reunidas, únicas por su valor artístico y significación histórica, se describen como «tesoros». Cada pieza lo es por un motivo distinto: unas responden al concepto de «tesoros desenterrados», como las espléndidas joyas obtenidas en las excavaciones de la antigua ciudad de Ur; otras constituyen grandes símbolos, como la escultura contemporánea realizada por la nigeriana Sokari Douglas Camp, que conmemora el bicentenario de la abolición de la trata de esclavos en Gran Bretaña.

THE EXHIBITIONThe exhibition concept

The exhibition brings together over 250 exceptional pieces from all historic periods and from different geographical areas from around the globe.

The incomparable collection of pieces held by the British Museum allows an exhibition discourse to be set out chronologically, dating back to the Stone Age and ending in the modern world. Likewise, from a spatial point of view, it covers art forms created by the world’s diverse cultures.

THE MEMORY OF MANKIND

The breadth and range of the artefacts displayed here is stunning and includes some of the British Museum’s most famous objects. The exhibition explores the ideas that lie behind these works and considers the meanings they held for those who made and used them. Through them we can see how diverse peoples living in different parts of the world at different times are connected by common ideas and concerns such as power and politics, religious belief, trade and war, technology, art, and the quest for identity.

OBJECTS TO MARVEL OVER AND LEARN FROM These artworks, unique in terms of their artistic value and historical significance, are described as “treasures”. Each piece can be described as such for a different reason: some reflect the concept of “unearthed treasures”, like the splendid jewels found during the excavations of the ancient city of Ur; others are important symbols, like the contemporary sculpture created by Nigerian-born Sokari Douglas Camp, which commemorates the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in Britain.

Recorrido expositivoVisiting the exhibition

La exposición se divide en 7 ámbitos, en los cuales las obras se organizan siguiendo un criterio geográfico y al mismo tiempo cronológico.

Las descripciones de los objetos y los textos introductorios animarán a los visitantes a comparar y contrastar las experiencias humanas y los logros culturales a lo largo del tiempo y del espacio.

Asimismo, a parte del mapa de la zona geográfica en cuestión, cada ámbito presenta un cronograma específico de la cultura correspondiente. Al final del recorrido, se incluye un cronograma de alcance general que sitúa en el tiempo y el espacio los hechos históricos y las obras de arte fundamentales de las distintas culturas del mundo.

A todo ello cabe añadir que la exposición, en la línea de las ya realizadas en este Centro, cuenta con un amplio despliegue escenográfico y visual.

Cada ámbito, excepto el último, cuenta con una pantalla de proyección en la que se podrán ver imágenes del continente, mapas, paisajes, así como algunas de las piezas. El montaje y tratamiento de las imágenes responden a un criterio gráfico que darán una armonía estética que se repetirá en todas las zonas geográficas. En la sala de proyección, se exhibe un vídeo del British Museum.

A continuación, y de forma esquemática, presentamos la distribución de los ámbitos y subámbitos de la exposición.

The exhibition is divided into 7 sections, into which the artworks are organised following both geographical and chronological criteria.

The descriptions of the objects and the introductory texts will encourage visitors to compare and contrast human experiences and cultural achievements over time and space.

As well as the map of the geographical area concerned, each section presents a specific timeline of the corresponding culture. At the end of the visit, a general timeline is included which offers a comparison of historic events and key artworks from the different cultures of the world.

It should be added that as to be expected from other exhibitions held at the Centre, there will be impressive set design and visual displays.

There is a projector screen in every section, other than the last one, in which images of the continent, maps and landscapes can be seen, as well as some of the pieces. The images have been put together following graphic criteria which lend aesthetic harmony that is repeated throughout the geographical areas. A video of the British Museum will be shown in the projection room.

Next, the distribution of the sections and sub-sections of the exhibition will be presented schematically.

1.1. La evolución humanaEl ser humano comenzó a trabajar la piedra y fabricó las primeras herramientas. Los objetos empezaron a adquirir un significado que surge de la preocupación del hombre por su propia existencia.

1.2. Antiguo Egipto La cultura, la religión y el arte del Antiguo Egipto siempre han sido una fuente constante de asombro y fascinación. Esta magnífica selección de obras de arte y objetos muestra a los dioses y faraones de Egipto y refleja la búsqueda de la inmortalidad por parte de los antiguos egipcios..

1.3. Reinos de ÁfricaDesde tiempos antiguos, la diversa vida cultural de África se ha expresado a través de objetos cotidianos y obras de arte únicas. Mucho antes de que se produjeran los primeros contactos con Europa, una serie de poderosos estados emer-gieron por todo el continente y reflejaron sus creencias y su forma de entender la vida en sofisticados objetos de metal, tejidos, esculturas de madera y obras de otro tipo.

1.1. Becoming Human Human beings started to work stone and made the first tools. Objects started to acquire significance that arose with man’s concern with his own existence.

1.2. Ancient Egypt The culture, religion and art of Ancient Egypt have always been an enduring source of wonder and fascination. This superb selection of artworks and objects explores the gods and pharaohs of Egypt, as well as the Egyptian quest for immortality.

1.3. African kingdomsThe diverse cultural life of Africa has been expressed through everyday objects and unique works of art since ancient times. Long before contact with Europe powerful states developed across the continent that translated their beliefs and unders-tandings into sophisticated metal wares, textiles, wooden sculptures and other works.

2.1. El antiguo Oriente Próximo El antiguo Oriente Próximo ha desempeñado un papel vital en el desarrollo del mundo en el que vivimos hoy en día. El desarrollo de la agricultura condujo a un crecimiento de las ciudades, el comercio, la burocracia, la religión, la política y la tecnología. Los ricos y diversos objetos que se muestran aquí recogen estos logros y avances.

2.2. Bizancio y su legadoEl Imperio bizantino fue el sucesor del Imperio romano en el Mediterráneo oriental. De esta “Nueva Roma” nacieron un arte y una cultura cristianos de gran riqueza que bebían de fuentes paganas, judías y clásicas.

2.3. El Oriente Medio islámicoDesde la aparición del Islam, en el siglo VII a. C., se han desarrollado extensas formas de arte islámico, que incluyen desde objetos para la corte hasta obras de arte religioso, lo que refleja el papel del Islam como religión y sistema político a la vez.

2.1. The Ancient Near East The Ancient Near East has played a vital role in the development of the world we live in today. The development of farming led to growth of cities, trade, bureaucracy, religion, politics and technology. The rich and diverse artefacts displayed here record these achievements and events.

2.3. Byzantium and its LegacyByzantium was the successor to the Roman Empire in the eastern Mediterranean. A rich Christian art and culture emerged in this ‘New Rome’ that was drawn from pagan, Jewish and classical sources.

2.2. The Islamic Middle EastWide-ranging forms of Islamic art have developed since the emergence of Islam in the 7th century AD. These include both court pieces as well as works of religious art, reflecting Islam’s role both as a religion and a political system.

3.1. Antigua Europa Con la aparición de las primeras comunidades agrícolas sedentarias, en Europa surgieron nuevas formas de vida. Se hicieron, mostraron y comercializaron objetos de valor que reflejaban tanto la riqueza personal como el poder político y que también podían ofrecerse como regalos a los dioses.

3.2. Antigua Grecia Las ideas y los avances de los antiguos griegos, en particular durante el siglo V antes de Cristo, han constituido la base de la civilización occidental y han dejado un legado permanente para toda la humanidad. Los objetos excepcionales que se muestran aquí reflejan el arte griego, la mitología y las creencias, la guerra y el comercio.

3.3. Antigua RomaRoma pasó de ser una pequeña ciudad a un estado republicano, antes de convertirse en uno de los imperios más poderosos del mundo antiguo. Los vastos territorios que se encontraban bajo control romano incluían ricas ciudades llenas de arte y sus pueblos estaban unidos por una cultura grecorromana común.

3.4. Alta Edad Media La gradual crisis del Imperio romano de Occidente conllevó cambios económicos, políticos y culturales a lo largo de Europa. Sin embargo, a pesar de la inestabilidad política, las invasiones y el malestar social, el arte siguió floreciendo.

3.5. Baja Edad MediaLas aproximadamente 1.100 nuevas naciones que se formaron hicieron posible el desarrollo de la agricultura y la expansión del comercio por toda Europa. El saber y las artes también progresaron. Los exquisitos objetos que podemos contemplar aquí reflejan la importancia que la iglesia católica tenía en ese momento, así como las habilidades de los artesanos medievales.

3.6. Europa 1500-1900El período comprendido entre los años 1500 y 1900 fue una época de gran evolución artística, intelectual y económica. Se redescubrió el saber de la época clásica y se hicieron grandes avances científicos y tecnológicos. Los exploradores, comerciantes y colonos europeos dominaban gran parte del mundo e imponían sus valores, tecnología y política.

3.1. Early EuropeNew lifestyles emerged in Europe with the appearance of the first settled farming communities. People made, displayed and traded valuable objects which reflected both personal wealth and political power. They could also be given as gifts to the gods.

3.2. Ancient GreeceThe ideas and achievements of the ancient Greeks, particularly during the 5th century BC, have provided the foundation of Western civilisation and left an enduring legacy for all humanity. The exceptional objects shown here explore Greek art, mythology and belief, war and trade.

3.3. Ancient RomeOriginally a small city, Rome developed into a republican state before becoming one of the mightiest empires of the ancient world. The vast territories brought under Roman control included rich cities filled with art, and its peoples were connected by a common Greco-Roman culture .

3.4. Early Middle Ages Starting from around 1100 new nations formed, agriculture developed and trade expanded across Europe. Learning and the arts also grew. The exquisite artefacts seen here reflect the importance of the Catholic church at this time as well as the skills of Medieval craft workers.

3.6. Europe 1500-1900The period from 1500-1900 was an age of great artistic, intellectual and economic achievement. The learning of the classical era was rediscovered and great scientific and technological advances were made. European explorers, traders and colonists dominated much of the world, imposing their values, technology and politics upon it.

4.1. ChinaChina es la mayor civilización del mundo, y también la más antigua, que ha tenido continuidad. Durante miles de años, su sociedad ha estado unida por un lenguaje escrito único, unas creencias comunes y unos códigos rituales. Famosa por su arte, sus productos manufacturados y sus avances tecnológicos, China es hoy en día una de las mayores potencias económicas del mundo.

4.2. Japón La continuidad y el cambio desde los tiempos antiguos han dejado su impronta en el arte y la artesanía de Japón. Mediante el amplio intercambio cultural que se ha producido durante cientos de años, Japón se ha convertido en un país próspero y altamente tecnológico que, sin embargo, no ha dejado de celebrar muchos elementos de su cultura tradicional.

4.3. Corea Situada entre China, Rusia y Japón, la geografía de Corea ha desempeñado un papel vital en el establecimiento de su patrimonio cultural. La dinastía Koryo (918-1392 d. C.) es considerada como un período de oro de los avances culturales y artísticos, ya que en él se crearon piezas de cerámica de gran originalidad y belleza.

4.4. Sureste de AsiaLos poderes regionales y el contacto con comerciantes y ocupantes extranjeros, especialmente de China y la India, dejaron huella en las ricas tradicionales culturales del Sureste de Asia. En la isla indonesia de Java, la tradición musical del gamelán refleja la interacción de las fuerzas culturales hindúes, islámicas, europeas, chinas y malayas.

4.5. El sur de Asia El sur de Asia es una región de gran diversidad lingüística y regional, pero estuvo unida culturalmente durante más de 2.000 años. El patrimonio artístico de la región refleja su importancia como centro de muchas de las grandes tradiciones religiosas del mundo, sobre todo del budismo, el hinduismo y el jainismo.

4.1. ChinaChina is the largest and oldest continuing civilisation in the world. Over thousands of years its society has been united by a single written language, common beliefs and ritual codes. Famous for its arts, manufactured goods and technological achievements, China today is one of the greatest economic powers in the world.

4.2. Japón The arts and crafts of Japan have been shaped by continuity and change since ancient times.. Through extensive cultural exchange over hundreds of years, Japan has become a thriving modern, high-technology society whilst continuing to celebrate many elements of its traditional culture.

4.3. Korea Positioned between China, Russia and Japan, Korea’s geography has played a vital role in establishing its diverse cultural heritage. The Koryo dynasty (AD 918-1392) is regarded as a golden period of cultural and artistic achievement, when ceramic wares of great originality and beauty were created.

4.4. Southeast AsiaThe rich cultural traditions of Southeast Asia have been shaped both by regional powers and through contact with foreign traders and occupiers, especially from China and India. On the Indonesian island of Java, the musical tradition of gamelan reflects the interaction of Hindu, Islamic, European, Chinese and Malay cultural forces.

6.1. Latinoamérica Antes de que se produjera el contacto europeo en el año 1500, muchas sociedades avanzadas evolucionaron por todo México, Centroamérica y Suramérica. Surgieron reinos e imperios regionales que construyeron grandes ciudades y monumentos y crearon piezas de arte muy sofisticadas de tejidos, cerámica y metales preciosos.

6.2. Norteamérica Los pueblos indígenas de América del Norte han mantenido su identidad cultural desde la antigüedad. Los objetos históricos que se muestran aquí reflejan la historia y las tradiciones de las sociedades indígenas de Canadá y los Estados Unidos, a la vez que ilustran los efectos del contacto con los europeos y la colonización de sus comunidades.

6.1. South and Central America Prior to European contact in the 1500s many advanced societies evolved across Mexico, Central and South America. Regional kingdoms and empires emerged who built great cities and monuments, and crafted sophisticated works of art in textile, ceramic and precious metals.

6.2. North AmericaThe indigenous peoples of North America have maintained their cultural identity since ancient times. The historic artefacts displayed here explore the histories and traditions of Native societies of Canada and the United States, while illustrating the effect of European contact and colonisation on their communities.

«Saber más»: en este espacio el visitante tendrá a su alcance las nuevas tecnologías para navegar y buscar información addicional sobre los temas de la exposición. Asimismo, habrá una zona de talleres con material educativo.

Por otro lado, el Canal de Isabel II presenta un corpus de actividades dirigidas a todos los públicos, tanto para niños como para adultos. Los profesores dispondrán de una guía didáctica de la exposición para, previamente a la visita, trabajar en clase las distintas cuestiones que plantea el discurso expositivo. Estas guías siguen los contenidos curriculares establecidos por el Ministerio de Educación.

“Find out more”: in this space visitors have access to new technologies where they can navigate and find additional information on the themes of the exhibition. There will also be a workshop area with educational material.

Parallel to this, the Canal de Isabel II presents a range of activities designed for all members of the public, both children and adults. Teachers will be provided with an educational guide to the exhibition so that they can work on the different issues presented by the exhibition’s discourse in class before the visit. These guides follow the curriculum established by the Ministry of Education.

Arte Canal se inauguró en 2004 con la exposición «Guerreros de Xi’an», con la que el Canal de Isabel II logró conquistar a más de 435.000 personas en poco menos de tres meses.

Tras ella, el Canal de Isabel II ha programado otras exposiciones, con tan buena acogida de crítica y público como la primera. Así, los madrileños han podido disfrutar de las muestras: «Faraón» (2005), «M. C. Escher» (2006), «Roma SPQR» (2007), «Madrid, 2 de mayo 1808-2008» (2008) y «Star Wars, the exhibition» (2008). Con ellas, la sala del Centro de Exposiciones Arte Canal ha conseguido un millón y medio de visitantes, cifras impensables hasta hoy para las exposiciones temporales.

La sala ocupa la mitad de uno de los cuatro módulos del cuarto depósito enterrado del Canal de Isabel II. Una estructura de primera mitad del siglo XX, con capacidad para 141.000 metros cúbicos de agua. Situada a 9 metros de

profundidad con respecto al parque de Plaza de Castilla, y a 5 metros en relación con el paseo de la Castellana, tiene una superficie de más de 4.700 metros cuadrados, distribuidos entre la entreplanta, de 1.200 metros cuadrados, y la planta baja de 3.500 metros cuadrados, de los cuales más de 2.000 m2 corresponden al área expositiva.

Este centro de exposiciones fue acondicionado respetando al máximo la construcción original, similar a los antiguos aljibes romanos y árabes. De hecho, conserva las arcadas del antiguo depósito que le proporcionan el aspecto de una enorme mezquita, con un total de 144 arcos con una altura de más de 7 metros.

Arte Canal was inaugurated in 2004 with the exhibition “Xi’an Warriors”. The Canal de Isabel II received over 435,000 visitors in a little less than three months.

Since this success, the Canal de Isabel II has programmed other exhibitions with equal critical and public acclaim to the first. Residents of Madrid have enjoyed the following exhibitions: “Pharaoh” (2005), “M. C. Escher” (2006), “Rome SPQR” (2007), “Madrid, 2nd May 1808-2008” (2008) and “Star Wars, the exhibition” (2008). With these exhibitions, the Arte Canal Exhibition Centre has welcomed more than one and a half million visitors, previously unimaginable figures for temporary exhibitions.

The hall occupies half of the first of the four modules of the fourth Canal de Isabel II water tank, a structure from the first half of the 20th century, with a 141,000 cubic metre water capacity. It has a depth of 9 metres with respect to the Plaza

de Castilla park, and 5 metres in relation to Paseo de la Castellana. It has a surface area of over 4,700 square metres, distributed in the mezzanine, with 1,200 square metres, and the 3,500 square metre ground floor, of which over 2,000 m² correspond to the exhibition area.

The exhibition centre was fitted out respecting the original construction as far as possible, similar to ancient Roman and Arab wells. In fact, it preserves the arches of the old water tank that give it the appearance of an enormous mosque, with a total of 144 arches with a height of over 7 metres.
