OFF ON AN ADVENTURE This week our Year 6 students and teachers head off for their 3 day camping trip to The Basin. The logistics are challenging, as they have to carry everything they need for the 3 days on and off buses and the ferry, and it’s not just camping gear and food supplies, but art supplies, sporting equipment and medical supplies etc

CONGRATULATIONS !

Ride 2 School Once again Forestville Public School will be participating in the National Ride2School program. Last year we had 94% of our students ride, scooter, skateboard or walk on the day, 94% is going to be tough to beat! The program aims to increase the children's level of physical activity and awareness of road and bicycle safety through riding, scootering or walking to school. Students are encouraged to ride their bike, scooter or walk safely to school on Friday the 23rd of March. Students who participate in riding must wear a helmet and everyone who participates will be given a sticker upon arrival.

Please clearly label your mode of transportation and be patient at the end of the day when we try to clear all of the bikes and scooters out of the parking areas. The students will be told where to park their bikes as each stage will have a separate parking area. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Ellis. Happy riding!

Junior and Senior Choir Next week Junior Choir and Senior Choir will be swapping rehearsal times due to a Year 5 excursion and a tight schedule to record an audition video with Senior Choir.

o Monday 12th March - Senior Choir at lunchtime o Wednesday 14th March - Junior Choir at lunchtime

Harmony Day We will celebrate Harmony Day on Wednesday 21 March. Our diversity makes Australia a great place to live. Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

It’s held every year on 21 March to coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, the Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone, and we encourage everyone to wear orange on that day.

Why orange?

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

Facts and figures

There are some fascinating statistics about Australia’s diversity that can be good conversation-starters:

• nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was

• we identify with over 300 ancestries

• since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia

• 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia

• apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

• more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia.

These facts are taken from ABS 2016 Census Data.

Does your child struggle with Learning? Parents Support Group Disabilities or difficulties. Its aim is to offer friendship and support and where possible, share appropriate knowledge and experiences. Although there are Sydney-based support groups out there and there is a lot of information available online, this is an opportunity to connect on a personal level, confidentially, within the school community. If you'd like further information, please contact the School Office.

Clean Up Day

Where do the Run Forest Run funds go? Money raised from the 2017 event helped fund important projects including; air conditioning in our kids’ classrooms, STEAM learning space and synthetic turf outside the school office. If we equal our 2017 result, we will be able to finish the air conditioning installation across all classrooms – great for summer, but also winter.

P&C News AGM – MONDAY 26 MARCH P&C AGM A reminder that Forestville Public School’s P&C Association will be holding our AGM on Monday 26th March 2018, 7pm in the Staff room.

Whilst all positions become vacant, some of the existing committee members are intending to stand for their current positions again. Of course this does not mean that anyone else can stand for those positions as well.

The positions of the P&C are: President – Not standing Vice President - Continuing Treasurer - Continuing Secretary – Not standing Canteen Co-ordinator – Not standing Canteen Treasurer - Continuing Class Parent Co-ordinator - Continuing Fun Run Co-ordinator(s) - Vacant

There is also committee positons on the Band and String committees which are elected at a separate AGM. I know they really need some new committee members this year.

In order to nominate or be nominated, as well as to be eligible to vote at the meeting you need to be a financial member. If you were not at our February meeting to be eligible please arrange to drop off $2 (in an envelope with your name on it) to the P&C box in the school office by Friday 23rd March 2018.

It would be really great to see some new faces to our P&C. We have a small group of hard working parents but it would be great to share that load with more families. The sense of pride and achievement of giving back to your children’s school really is fantastic. To be able to say we helped make that happen or we helped the school access those resources makes you feel warm and fuzzy.

There may be areas you feel could be improved, so why not come along and participate in making that improvement happen.

If you cannot make the meeting but wish to stand for one of the positions please email the below address, stating your name and the position you are standing for, by Friday 23rd March 2018.

Can’t make the meetings? If you still want to be involved then email [email protected] and we can arrange for you to conference in so you can be a part of the meeting from the comfort of your own home.

I hope to see lots of new and familiar faces on the 26th March.
