The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors World Championships is the most coveted event on the ITF Seniors circuit, and the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre is thrilled to be hosting a number of games for this prestigious event.

Ashburton is hosting three divisions of the ITF championships as a satellite venue for Canterbury Tennis, with Timaru also hosting some divisions.

The Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre will be host to doubles competition play in the Austria Cup for men over 55, Maria Esther Bueno Cup for women over 50, and the Maureen Connolly Cup

for women over 55. This is an opportunity for the Mid-Canterbury public to see world class tennis players, battle it out for world titles.

Competing in these coveted cups are competitors from 17 different countries, with 129 competitors taking to the courts in Ashburton. The New Zealand selected players have a strong line-up, including a number of former Davis Cup representatives, including Alistair Hunt, James Greenhalgh, Glen Wilson, David Mustard, Steve Harley, Ruth Seeman and Robyn Legge Hunt.

Onny Parun, a former New Zealand tennis great, has been named as the official ambassador for these championships. It is hoped that he will make an appearance at all three venues, to give Mid-Canterbury the chance to meet a former Grand Slam star.

Since its inception in 1981, the number of competitors attracted to this event has increased year on year. Rising from four age categories to 15 by 1993, with more than 700 competitors, the ITF took the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups, Seniors for the younger veterans and Super-Seniors for the older players. The tournament is held yearly, at a different location all over the world. Last year the World Championships were held in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in April, with 2009 being hosted at the Beach Club Font de Sa Cala, Mallorca, Spain.

In announcing Canterbury as the location for the 2011 Championships, Francesco Ricci Bitti, President of the International Tennis Federation, said that Canterbury was an excellent destination to host this prestigious tournament.

“Canterbury Tennis and the Christchurch City Council with the endorsement of Tennis New Zealand submitted a bid for the 2011 Championships and given Canterbury Tennis’ excellent track record at running, very professionally, previous official championships the ITF has great confidence in awarding the event to Canterbury”.

Today the tournament caters for a range of 20 age categories for both singles and doubles, boasting record entries of more than 1000 players, with more than 700 entries already received for this year’s tournament.

With an impressive array of top class competitors, Mid-Canterbury will be treated to an excellent display of world class tennis, to thrill local tennis fans. A fantastic family day out, this is a world class event not to be missed!

It is with great anticipation and excitement that Onny Parun may make an appearance in Ashburton, after being named as the official ambassador for the 31st Seniors World Championships.

Onny Parun (OBE) is a former New Zealand tennis great, who was among the world’s top 20 for five years. Parun had something of a love affair with Wimbledon, although it would be fair to say the feeling was mutual.

Wellington born, Parun made the quarter finals at Wimbledon in 1971 and 1972, over a lengthy career at the tournament. In 1967, a 20-year-old Parun made his first journey to Wimbledon, but it was the following year that the New Zealander made his first real impact at England’s grand slam. In the second round he faced British number one - Roger Taylor, where a hard fought game resulted in victory for Parun. This helped to establish his fame within the tennis circuit, with one English journalist commenting that it was outrageous that the top British player would lose to a person from a country that had more sheep than people.

Parun had great success in many other grand slam competitions throughout his career.

He made the final of the Australian Open in 1973, losing to John Newcombe in four sets, was a United States Open quarterfinalist in 1973 and also a quarterfinalist at the French Open in 1975.

In 1974 Parun, partnered by Australian Dick Crealy, went on to win the French Open doubles title. Later that same year, Parun competed at the masters, qualifying by finishing in the top eight on the grand prix table.

Parun reached his highest singles ranking on May 3, 1975, when he was ranked 19th in the world.

Parun represented New Zealand in the Davis Cup from 1966 to 1982 and won a string of national titles, including the Benson and Hedges Open three times in four years. Parun won 30 of 32 Davis Cup matches. Over his 15 years he had to contend with some of the world’s best such as Rod Laver, John Newcombe, the great Ken Rosewall as well as the likes of Indian Vijay Armitraj.

A unique feature that Parun will be forever remembered for is standing on the service line, biting a piece of string that was attached to his shoulder. Good old Kiwi ingenuity held his head in place while serving, which was fragile due to a neck injury. Many a Kiwi tennis fan will be grateful, that it enabled the tennis star to continue playing well into his thirties.

At the conclusion of his tennis career, Parun spent a year in Germany, and then spent 13 years in London, before returning to New Zealand in 1998. During his life he has associated with many well known local and international celebrities. He met Elton John and Cliff Richard in Auckland while having a casual game with them, years later they would come to the club in London that Parun was coaching at. Parun describes Elton as being a good friend, and a warm and generous person.

Onny Parun shared a history class at Wellington College with Keith Quinn, and was also childhood friends with ex All Black, Mark Sayers. Parun and Sayers both lived in Wadestown, and would go to the local park to play football every Saturday and Sunday.

Onny’s style and success has been an inspiration to many tennis players world-wide. It is anticipated that he will make an appearance at each of the venues hosting games for these championships, giving local tennis enthusiasts the opportunity to see a great New Zealand tennis legend.

The place

Junior tennis in Mid-Canterbury is thriving, thanks to the expertise and dedication of their coach, Chris Anderson.

Chris has been instrumental in developing the Bank of New Zealand Ace Squad in Mid-Canterbury, a development programme for junior tennis players who show immense potential. It helps to create a pathway for gifted players toward further development, as they enter the senior ranks. Many local juniors that have been through this programme have gone on to represent Canterbury to further their tennis careers.

Chris organises the popular mini tennis competition, where children as young as five can attend to learn the art of tennis, and have a bit of fun. Throughout the local primary schools, Chris runs the Mid Canterbury Tennis in Schools programme, from August to November. It targets students from year three to year six, and with more than 20 primary schools participating last season, more than 1500 children got to experience playing tennis.

As a local, Chris has a passion for helping Mid-Canterbury’s strength increase amongst all ages. She grew up in Lowcliffe, and attended Ashburton College, when her tennis talent started to flourish. She soon become one of Mid-Canterbury’s top tennis players and represented Canterbury for many years. After leaving school, she moved to Christchurch for work, and continued playing senior tennis for over 20 years.

After having children, Chris returned to tennis to play in the Wednesday night social league in Christchurch. Due to her expertise and knowledge, the club she played for asked her to

help teach some of the other social players. The club then later employed her to coach some of their developing juniors, and as her reputation grew for producing great players, the demand for her coaching expertise grew too.

As her family got older, Chris was able to dedicate more time to coaching and soon made her passion for tennis her career. While at Woodham Park in Christchurch, she worked alongside other top coaches, picking up their coaching techniques and tips. After sitting her coaching exam, Chris then extended her coaching to a higher level.

Chris was selected to become the New Zealand coach for the wheelchair team, and travelled extensively for 15 years. She travelled with the team to three Paralympics, and 16 World Team Cup events, which is the disabled version of the World Seniors Championships. This extensive experience of large events has helped Chris to prepare for the World Seniors Championships taking part in Ashburton this February.

Chris is also a New Zealand registered and certified referee, which has given her the opportunity to referee at many national and local events. Mid-Canterbury spectators will get the opportunity to see Chris in action, as she is the venue manager and will liase with the ITF Co-ordinator , here in Ashburton.

Many of Mid-Canterbury’s flourishing juniors can credit their firm grip and strong back-hands to the dedication of Chris, and with the strengthening quality of players evolving from the district, we hope to see some of our rising stars at the New Zealand Open over the next few years.

An important meeting was held at the Oak Grove Tennis Pavilion on 16th August, 1999 at 8pm. This meeting would, in time, create substantial history for Mid Canterbury Tennis.

A committee had been appointed to see if a development, including the upgrade of the current pavilion and the addition of Plexipave courts with lighting was feasible. The chairperson for the meeting was Jack Allan, and each person present gave their opinion on whether they thought the new courts were necessary, or if opting to retain the grass ones was a better solution.

A consensus was reached later that evening, that initially they would try for five or 6 Pexipave courts, to apply for council consent and seek the expertise of an engineer.

The meeting was adjourned at 10pm and had set the foundations for the world class facility that Ashburton treasures today.

A number of meetings took place over the following months, where a dedicated committee discussed the costs associated with the massive project, and brainstormed

various fundraising ideas to make the up-grades attainable.

The committee which had formed into the Mid Canterbury Tennis Charitable Trust, approached various local business in search of sponsorship for individual courts and an overall facility naming right.

A memorable Trans-Tasman fundraising tennis match was held in Ashburton between Victoria, Australia and Canterbury. This was used as a platform to launch the association’s $750,000 fundraising drive, which would later be increased to $850,000. 20 corporate boxes and a grandstand were constructed around a single grass court for the exciting matches to be played. The successful event took place on Thursday 27th January, 2000 at 4:30pm, and was a glorious success for Ashburton.

Significant pledges of support from individuals and organisations, including large pledges from the Ashburton Trust, Ashburton District Council and New Zealand Tennis helped to get the initial construction stages underway.

The Ashburton Guardian donated advertising space to keep the momentum going over the following months, with constant up-dates on the fundraising effort.

On 14th August 2000, The Mid Canterbury Tennis Charitable Trust then deliberated on tenders received to undertake the construction. G&D Russell were awarded the contract to build the pavilion, while Ashburton Contracting Limited was awarded the substantial contract for constructing the new tennis courts, including the surrounding gates and fencing.

August 26 and 27 saw rapid changes emerging on the grounds, with the beloved grass courts being cut, lifted and rolled to be sold as turf. This was the start of the dramatic changes taking place within Mid Canterbury Tennis.

The Mid Canterbury Tennis Charitable Trust kept momentum rolling, with more sponsorship being sought and a number of fundraising activities, such as the sale of lambs, bake sales, fashion parades and local tennis club fundraising efforts. One of

the major events held was the “Wimbledon with a twist” fundraiser, where Mark Hadlow was the celebrity presenter. It was described as another success, with the crowd enjoying Hadlow’s humour.

A year to the day after the $850,000 project was launched, the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre was triumphantly opened. Mid Canterbury tennis patron Mona Reddecliffe, and Eric Bryant who had contributed a significant donation to start the fundraising cut the grand opening ribbon to declare the complex open.

The substantial efforts of Phil Crozier and Jack Allan allowed this fantastic facility to be here today, along with the combined efforts of the Mid Canterbury Tennis Charitable Trust with their tireless commitment to fundraising.

G&D Russell and Ashburton Contracting Limited can be proud in the high standard of construction, which has allowed a magnificent event such as the World Seniors Tennis Championships to be held in Ashburton.

The Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre will be host to doubles competition play in the Austria Cup for men over 55, Maria Esther Bueno Cup for women over 50, and the Maureen Connolly Cup for women over 55.

The Austria CupMen 55

The Austria Cup is presented annually to the winning team of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors World Team Championships for men in the 55 age group.

In 1976, Dr Walter Spiess, a member of the International Veterans Tennis Association, proposed a new Cup for men in the fifty-five age category on behalf of the Austrian Tennis Association.

The inaugural event was played in Baden b. Wien, Austria in 1977.

The 2010 event took place from 29 March - 3 April in Mexico City, Mexico. Australia won the title beating Great Britain in the final.

The 2011 competition will be hotly contended by 15 countries. The names and country of origin of these players is listed.

A multi-cultural extravaganza of talent

Brazilian captured the championship at Wimbledon in 1959, ‘60 and ‘64 and at Forest Hills in 1959, ‘63, ‘64 and ‘66, and achieved a doubles Grand Slam in 1960 with Christine Truman in Australia and with Darlene Hard in the French, Wimbledon and US Championships. She collected a total of 63 titles during a career which spanned 20 years but was effectively cut short by an elbow injury in 1967.

In 1983, the Brazilian Tennis Federation donated the Maria Esther Bueno Cup for women players in the fifty age category. This was the first Women’s Team Competition the inaugural event was held in Pörtschach, Austria.

The 2010 event took place from 29 March - 3 April in Mexico City, Mexico, where the United States team were victorious over Great Britain.

Maureen Connolly CupWomen 55

Maureen Connolly, known as “Little Mo”, was one of the most remarkably successful champions the game has known. Extremely determined and with a high degree of concentration, she won the US singles title at the age of 16 in 1951 and thereafter lost only four singles matches -- two to Doris Hart, one to Shirley Fry and one to Beverley Fleitz before she broke her leg in a riding accident in 1954. The first woman to achieve a Grand Slam of the four major championships in a calendar year, a feat she achieved in 1953.

The Maureen Connolly Brinker Foundation donated the Maureen Connolly Cup through the United States Tennis Association for women players in the 55 age category.

The inaugural event was played in 1992 in Tyler, Texas.

The 2010 event took place from 29 March - 3 April in Mexico City, Mexico. The United States of America won the title for the fourth consecutive year, beating the Netherlands in the final.The 2011 competition will prove to be
