President’s Report

As we are well into the New Year things have been rolling along in the tennis scene.

The Australian Summer of tennis certainly gives a much needed boost to the tennis movement with increased exposure.

The challenge we are currently facing is to expand our membership base to keep providing tennis and social opportunities in a friendly healthy environment. One initiative we have taken for a trial period is to offer free membership to TSV for new members at social tournaments for the current membership period. We would encourage players to take up this offer and for members to make aware this offer to friends and bring them to any of the social tournaments to experience many of the benefits of senior tennis.

At TSV we have been quite busy the last few months with the Australian team’s carnival and individual event and many ongoing social events held throughout the year.

Thank you to all involved in the preparation and participation of the team’s event which was held in Canberra in January. Victoria came out with the trophy on aggregate after a week of social but competitive tennis. Congratulations to all players who participated. We would like to encourage all members to consider joining us at

Shepparton next January for the team’s championship on some of the best grass courts anywhere in the world. I would also like to encourage members if they have not entered to come and watch the Oceania Championship at Kooyong next month which is certainly one of the showcase tournaments in the area at the most prestigious venue.

As always I welcome any feedback from members in relation to suggestions, concerns and constructive criticism on how we can serve members better moving forward. Please contact me ASAP if you are interested or would like more information on helping out the committee at ITF or social events throughout the year with our next ITF tournament later in the year at Dingley Tennis Club.

Along with our regular social tournaments throughout the state I would also like players to consider entering any of the events throughout Victoria and Australia but also consider planning for Shepparton in 2016 as we would love to have a strong Victorian contingent participating and enjoying the week with us.

A reminder to all members that our website is www.tennisseniorsvictoria.com.au all upcoming events, contact details, membership forms and results can be accessed via this site. See you on the courts.

The Three Musketeers Travel to Spain …..by Leanne Scott

For those who are entering the seniors Level of ITF Tennis Tournaments, look no further than Spain.

We three girls (Leanne, Julie & Sue) travelled from Melbourne to Malaga in October 2014 to play three tournaments in Spain over three weeks, Grades 4, 3 and 1.

Malaga (Costa Del Sol) was a visual delight. Situated on the Mediterranean, the clay courts overlooking the Sea. What more could us girls ask for? At that time of year it is balmy and humid, making any long matches a tough workout. There were many! The staff, players and locals were all delightful, and keen to include us in all social events. Needless to say it would have been better if our Spanish were a little more extensive than “Hola”.

Our good friend Rafa, welcomed us with open arms (he does with all the Aussies). The eight courts and Clubhouse in Malaga are situated at a five star resort. Yes, you might get a night match under lights, with not all lights working but that is all part of playing in Spain! You can then sit and have a drink or meander down to the beach and have a massage at a negotiated price. Barter over a skirt, shirt or bag. All of us girls like to contribute to the local economy and partake in some retail experiences.

So onto Mallorca. Spain’s largest island, which belongs to the archipelago of Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. A short flight from Malaga. Just a most relaxed holiday atmosphere on this historic island.

The matches are spread around three neighbouring Clubs, all offering a bistro, clay

courts in good condition and some tasty sangria. There is a large entry

list on this most popular ITF Grade 1 tournament, restrictions apply to play two events only. An extremely relaxed atmosphere makes this an annual holiday for the end of European summer. We were a little out numbered by Germans, Austrians and locals until we saw a glimpse of the

grey and gold Aussie tracksuit. Hola, Guten Tag went to “Go Aussies”.

Our travels are adventurous and throughout the three weeks, we played tennis everyday in hot conditions but were treated to some incredible Spanish hospitality. I highly recommend this tour for those who wish to improve their tennis, Spanish and love of travelling.

“Disfrute de su tennis, Adios Hasta luego.”

TSV SOCIAL TOURNAMENTS

You all have received the current program for this year. Please note we do have to amend this schedule from time to time but not often. Eildon Park Tennis Club (not near the dam but in Rowville) will be hosting a tournament on October 4 which is an amendment to the program. Our next seniors tournament is a Kooyong on the grass on Sunday March 22nd. It is always a great day so bring along your friends. We start at 1.00 .North East Vets This group of clubs run a social tournament every 2 weeks over the summer period. The day starts with morning tea when you get there at 10-10.30 then 2 -8 game sets before a great sit down lunch in the club house followed by more tennis and afternoon tea. It is really a most enjoyable day. On Sunday February 1st a number of "city" players made the trip to Benalla. We all enjoyed the tennis on the grass, the food and the company. Thanks to Wendy Maxwell and the folk at Benalla Tennis Club who do a great job.

Glen Waverley Xmas Break-up

It was a great twilight tournament in December for our final social tournament for the 2014 year. Glen Waverley had a tremendous spread – bbq and salads etc Thank you Glen Waverley for a wonderful night.

2015 Teams' Championships in Canberra – 4 – 9 January 2015

Overnight rain did nothing to prevent all of the finals being completed on schedule. Some magnificent tennis was played despite a few tired legs at the end of the week-long event. The atmosphere at the Lyneham courts was electric, with some matches coming down to the last game.

The Presentation night was at the Hellenic Club in Canberra, where it was announced that Victoria came out on top of the other 7 competing States and Countries in the National Tennis Seniors Australia teams' event in Canberra as winners of the Teams Carnival Trophy. It has been many years since Victoria has taken out the title of the top State, and the Victorian players (along with others) celebrated long into the night after formal presentations had been finalised.

In other great news for Victoria, Glenn Busby won Player of the Year after a fantastic year which saw him ranked No 1 in the World in both singles and doubles in his age group and Nola Collins was named winner of the Player Recognition Award - coming back from adversity to have a great year on the court after 30 years of playing National, State and local tennis. Both outstanding performances.

Wendy Harrison, the TSV Secretary, received the awards on behalf of the teams, Glenn and Nola, and stated that it was a very proud day for Victorian Seniors Tennis.
