We will be using the book by Rabbi Rachel Cowan and Dr. Linda Thal as a basis for discussion. The introduction to the book contains a few jokes that have been circulating in the media. “Inside every senior there is an 18-year-old wondering, ‘What the hell happened?’” “Grandma, my teacher says little girls can grow up to be anything they choose. Why did you choose to be an old lady?” “There are three ages of man: youth, middle age, and ‘You look good!’” While illness and loss go along with aging, we can redefine our approach to life. We will be using the book by Bruce Feiler as a basis for discussion and learning. The Bible is thousands of years old and sometimes the practices we read about seem ancient, foreign and difficult to relate to. Author and journalist, Bruce Feiler, wanted to find a way to better connect to these ancient words. He traveled through three continents and five countries to trace the steps that our Biblical ancestors traveled. In this class we will take the journey with the author. From the PBS special of the same name, we have access to photos and video clips of the different areas he visited. These will help us get a better sense of where our ancestors lived and traveled. Also, the pictures will help to clarify the meaning of the texts we so value, and make them come alive and become more relevant in our lives. Please purchase the book for the course. If you are interested in taking either or both of these courses, please fill out the registration form on page 3 and return it to the temple office no later than June 21, to avoid the registration fee. The first class is Tuesday, June 25, and runs through August 20.

Shavuot HistoryShavuot, known as the Festival of the Giving of the Torah, is reflected in the Bible, which

recounts how, after the Exodus from Egypt, the Children of Israel proceeded to Mount Sinai in the desert. Moses ascended the mountain to meet God, who gave him the Ten Commandments, which were written on two tablets to be delivered to the Children of Israel.

According to the Torah, it took precisely 49 days, or seven weeks, for the ancient Israelites to travel from Egypt to the foot of Mount Sinai. The Torah commands: "And you shall proclaim that day (the 50th day) to be a holy convocation!" (Leviticus 23:21). The name Shavuot, "Weeks," symbolizes the completion of this seven-week journey. The rabbis tightened this connection by associating Shavuot with Moses’ receiving the Torah from God atop Mount Sinai.

Shavuot also is a harvest holiday. In the time of the Temple, the ancient Israelites brought their first fruits to the Temple to offer to God at Shavuot. Along with Sukkot and Passover, it is one of the Shalosh Regalim (Three Pilgrimage Festivals), during which people gathered in Jerusalem with their agricultural offerings.

Shavuot Customs and RitualsIn modern times, Jews can no longer bring the first fruits of their

harvest to the Temple in Jerusalem, and thus there are no particular mitzvot, or commandments, associated with Shavuot. There are, however, several rituals that are traditional components of celebrating the holiday.

Many people stay up all night studying Torah. This custom evolved from the story that says that when the Israelites were at Sinai, they overslept and had to be awakened by Moses. As a result, many modern Jews stay up all night to study and celebrate receiving the Torah. These events, known as Tikkun Leil Shavuot, which literally means “Rectification for Shavuot Night,” are understood as the custom of studying with a community in order to re-experience standing at Mount Sinai, where the Jewish people received the Torah. The Tikkun Leil Shavuot was developed by 16th century mystics in Safed, who believed that by studying on Shavuot, they were symbolically preparing Israel to enter into a sacred relationship with God. Modern interpretations and versions of this practice include study on a wide range of topics.

It also is customary to eat dairy foods on Shavuot because Jewish tradition compares the words of Torah to the sweetness of milk and honey. Blintzes and cheesecake are among the popular foods to make and enjoy for the holiday.

Traditionally, the Book of Ruth, part of the section of the Bible known as Writings, is read during services on Shavuot. Ruth is a young Moabite woman who married an Israelite man. When her husband died, she followed her mother-in-law, Naomi, back to Israel and adopted the Jewish faith and people as her own. To feed herself and Naomi, she gleaned in the field of Boaz, a rich man. Boaz is taken with her, and eventually they marry. Among their descendants is the famed King David.

The theme of Ruth’s conversion to Judaism is central to this story. In Ruth 1:16–17, she states: “Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following after you. For wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. Thus and more may God do to me if anything but death parts me from you.” Ruth is often considered to be the archetype of all who “choose” or convert to Judaism—accepting the Torah, just as Jews accepted the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

Dear Temple Member:

This year, we Jews will begin our year 5,780.  We lasted this long despite 400 years as slaves in Egypt and 40 years of wandering in the desert. We survived the Romans who nailed us to ten thousand crosses, the efforts of the Crusaders, the Spanish Inquisition, Hitler’s third Reich, Stalin’s gulags, the Arab attempts of annihilation, and hundreds of hate-filled UN  resolutions. We were able to survive by concentrating our efforts on education, love of family, and a passionate  dedication to temple life. As we approach the New Year, our Temple again asks for your financial support. Therefore I am urging each of you to renew your Century Club membership or, if not a member, to please join with us at our annual rate of $100 or more. The names and messages of all members are inscribed each year on the Century Club plaque in the lobby. In order to ensure your inscription, we must have your commitment by the first week in July so that it can be displayed before the High Holy Days beginning September 30.

Very truly yours,      Joel Lerner, Chairperson

PRIMETIMERS Next meeting: Monday, June 10, 1:00 PM

They say time flies when you’re having fun, and here we are back in the Catskills from our winter residences. June is busting out all over and the Primetimers are busy planning a great summer and fall season.

We still have seats available for our day-on-your-own in New York City. For only $30 round trip you can go to the theater, museums, meet a friend, walk around the beautiful city, or do whatever you wish. We are taking reservations for these two (2) trips, the first on June 19 and the second on August 14.

On July 17, we have a docent who will give us a bus and walking tour of the meat packing district, Hi Line Park, Chelsea, and art galleries. We end up in Chinatown for a lunch on your own. This trip is only $50 including bus, tip, guide, and any admissions. We still have some seats left.

Our next meeting is Monday, June 10, at 1 PM. David Sager will speak about the many new things happening in Monticello.

Mark your calendars for our gambling trips which are almost free. Wednesday, July 24, to the Sands Casino and outlet mall and Wednesday, August 29, to the Mohegan Sun. Details and packages will be announced shortly.

Looking forward to our June 10 meeting and to seeing all of our members again.
