Getting a “God’s Eye View”Getting a “God’s Eye View”Getting a “God’s Eye View”Getting a “God’s Eye View” Well, it’s been a month since my knee surgery and I now find myself even attempting “solo” flights without crutches (don’t tell my Dr.) but I still walk like Chester, in the old Gunsmoke series. My apologies if you have never seen an episode. In spite of my complaining and having to put off a summer of planned projects, I must admit that healing is coming---slowly! This launches me into the spiritual awareness that there is a big difference between seeing things from a human point of view and God’s point of view. From a human perspective we are mostly results ori-ented. We want what we want and we want it now! I have been tempted to say to my knee, “Heal, Heal, al-ready!” in my wanting things to move along more quickly. Yet, isn’t that a deep problem in our world. We all lack the real understanding needed, the deep way of seeing, if you will, into all aspects of life. The way things really work, the realm where God works, is mostly a vague mystery we can only approach but never fully know. Over the last 50 years there has been a profound shift towards the human way of seeing. It’s a preference and a valuing of all things human, and for too many I am afraid it’s the only important thing or the only thing that actually exists for them. What really matters now is what we care about, what we want, what we feel and what we experience. Almost gone is the patience to learn, grow, reflect, work towards a better future, plan, and even to pray. We just live in the fast lane 24-7 driven by some unknown force that would have us jam as much living into each moment as we can. There is almost no time left for God, faith, family, church, neighborhood or world. By the way, there is a relationship to what I am saying and how we relate to the world’s environment! So, let us remember the “higher things,” the things of God in the midst of living. I think that is what Jesus calls us to. The real life we want and need is a life filled with the good things of God. What we all need is a “God’s Eye View.” That’s why we worship; that’s the promise of being part of a community of seekers, believers, and learners in Christ. It’s the gift of salvation and faith. I hope to see you in worship. Pastor Randy

Confirmation Class of 2007Confirmation Class of 2007Confirmation Class of 2007Confirmation Class of 2007

Our 2007 Confirmation class members will join the church on Sunday, August 19 at the 10:30 a.m. service. Our final class session will take place on August 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the Music Room. At the August 19 service, Katie Hanson, Matt McCullough, Peter Peterson, Kathy and Natasha Turnblad will stand before the congregation, profess their Christian faith, and take the vows of membership in the United Methodist Church and become full professing members of TUMC. This group of youth met with Pastor Randy for several weeks in the spring and early summer. A variety of topics were discussed at length about Christian history, theology, and what it means to be a Christian. This is a high moment for each of these youth, and we hope you are present in worship to welcome and encourage them in their faith journey.

We have invited two other choirs to join us in a special afternoon of choral music. The program will end with the combined choirs, (including TUMC) singing a work entitled, Gospel Mass by Robert Ray. The Mass is an attempt to combine two thousand years of liturgical tradition with the much more recent contemporary music of the African American Church. The work is broken into six distinct parts: Kyrie (Lord Have Mercy); Gloria (Glory to God in the Highest); Credo (I Believe in God); Acclamation (Hallelujah, Praise The Lord); Sanctus (Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts); Agnus Dei (Lamb Of God). Robert Ray is a composer, arranger, and pianist who has served as Associate Professor of Music at the University of Illinois, choral conductor, music clinician, and accompanist to numerous na-tionally recognized groups such as the Walden String Quartet, and the Contemporary Chamber Players. Reserve the date now. You will not want to miss this afternoon of an extraordinary choral experi-ence. Watch for more information in the coming months.

Many of our members use scrip on a regular basis, which has generated revenue of over $40,000 over the past several years. For our scrip fundrais-ing program to be the success it could be, we need more of our members to make a commitment to use scrip for their regular monthly purchases. Buy-ing groceries with scrip is a great way for us to support the scrip program,

since grocery purchases are a major expense for us all each month. In the last Messenger, it was shown that $12,000 a year could be raised with a commitment from more families to use scrip to buy their groceries. Another way our members can and do partici-pate in this fundraiser is by linking their grocery club rewards cards to our church. We can actu-ally raise funds two ways: by swiping our linked club card and by using scrip at checkout. We hope that each family will link their club cards in order to have every purchase count towards TUMC’s quarterly rebate check. That will make a big difference. Here are the specific steps to take to register your club card for each grocery store offering a community rewards card pro-gram: A l b e r t s o n s : G o o n l i n e a t www.albertsons.com and register your blue Preferred Savings Card that you got at the store. First, click on “In The Commu-nity,” click on “Albertsons Community Part-ners” (on the right), click on “shoppers login or register with your card,” fill in your card number and the phone number that you signed up with, then click on “Find Partners.” Enter our church name, city and state, click on the magnifying glass to find the name of our church, and once found, check the box next to our church name with ID #49000108839. This will link TUMC with your Preferred Savings Card, and you will begin earning contributions on purchases immediately. Scrip is also available in $25 and $100 denomina-tions. TUMC earns 4% of each card sold. Food 4 Less: Please stop by the scrip table and pick up a Food 4 Less Rewards Card and fill out the Food 4 Less registration sheet and your scrip coordinator will acti-vate your card for you. Ralphs scrip can be used for purchases at Food 4 Less and $25 cards are available for purchase.

Ralphs: Go to www.ralphs.com, click on “Community Contribution”, click on “Participant Sign-Up” and fill out the Par-ticipants Enrollment Form. You will be asked for your club card number and for TUMC’s NPO #, which is #80434. If you do not have a computer, please fill out the Ralphs registration form at the scrip table

TUMC earns 4% for each card sold. Stater Brothers: There are no club cards, as you know. The scrip program offers scrip in $25 and $100 denomina-tions. TUMC earns 5% for every card sold to our members. This merchant gives us the highest percentage of all the grocery scrip sold. Vons: Go to www.escrip.com and click on “Sign-up.” Follow the 6 easy registra-tion steps. In Step 1, you enter our Group ID # 1432727 and click on “Search.” Then, click on “Temecula United Methodist Church,” and click on “Next.” Follow the rest of the easy regis-tration steps. You can register just your Vons grocery club card and in addition one or more of your debit and credit cards for use in the program. It’s up to you. Your purchases are tracked allowing you to see just how much you are earn-ing for TUMC each quarter. Participating merchants make contributions to our church automatically based on the pur-chases you make with the cards you have registered. The participating merchants are listed on the website with Macys be-ing a major one. Vons scrip is also avail-able in $25 and $100 denominations and our church earns 3% for every card sold.

Let’s meet our fundraising goal of raising $10,000 this year by taking advantage of the rebates that are offered to us by most of the grocery stores in town. The merchants offer these rebates because they want to support non-profit organizations like our church, so let’s do all that we can in order to receive these funds. This fundraiser is different than all the rest; it costs you nothing more than your regu-lar purchases and it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort on your part. It may take a little extra planning at home before purchasing scrip, but it is well worth the effort. Remember that scrip is available during the week at the church office for your convenience. Church Council Chairwoman Fall season is approaching and summer will be com-ing to a close. Just as seasons change and new hap-penings begin, TUMC can look forward to our Minis-try Faire to be held Sunday, September 9. This will be a time of renewal and how you can be involved in the work of the church. All ministry areas of our con-gregation will have displays and information to in-form you. Please plan to browse the displays on the patio and speak to a representative. You will be ener-gized when you learn all the work that takes place in our congregation. Reflecting on the past few months, TUMC can be proud of our July 4 celebration. Our church has one of the best viewing spots for the fireworks. A large crowd enjoyed food and games. Proceeds from the food and parking will help our food pantry, which is assisting 50 to 60 families weekly. The Gala dinner and auction at Temeku Hills Country Club in February was co-chaired with Habitat for Hu-manity. Proceeds of approximately $30,000 were distributed equally between the two entities. The Church Council hosted the first church potluck on June 29 following the 10:30 a.m. worship. A rec-ommendation was approved by the Church Council that the fifth Sunday in any month would have only one worship service followed by a potluck luncheon.

Rev. David French

Dear Members of TUMC, Our congregation has a group of people skilled in caring for those facing challenges in their lives. These people, called Stephen Ministers, have undergone exten-sive training to develop and nur-ture their caring skills. Our Stephen Ministers are working with people who are experienc-ing many different kinds of crises and stress in their lives. Who might receive care from a Stephen Minister? Care receivers

A large attendance in June was hailed as a success with delicious food and fellowship. United Methodist Women hosted the July 29 potluck. Any group may volunteer for the next one on September 30. Our yard sale on June 2 netted $1,875. The food pantry received $250 to purchase canned milk. Due to the huge price increase on milk, funds were not available to continue to give milk to the clients for infant feeding. The yard sale could be called a 3 star sale… if you donated – one star, if you donated and bought – 2 stars; if you donated, bought and worked – 3 stars. Many hands made the event possible. Our Missions work area under Hope Zangl’s direction received the California Pacific Conference’s recogni-tion for “Outstanding Missionary Supporting Church in the Riverside District for 2006”. The Church Council welcomed new staff members this year: Earl Fields as Music Director and Rev. David Brostrom, Pastoral Consultant. These new staff members have shown their expertise to the congregation in many ways. Another event this fall will be our annual Craft Faire Saturday, October 13. TUMC has hosted the faire for nine years. We are known for one of the best and most caring faire in Temecula Valley. Our Church Council continues to work on goals and new programs. Your ideas for us could be helpful. This country is full of willing people – those willing to work and those willing to let them. Which one are you?

I am tasked among you to do Pastoral calling of the home-bound, hospitalized, those in re-hab situa-tions and memory loss folks in assisted living institu-tions. I observe the following on how folks in our community cope or fail to cope when things go awry. Most do quite well. We do not all handle life’s problems in a uniform way nor should we expect that we would. We are individually unique and our characters are very dif-ferent. Some of us are as tough as nails and some are very fragile. We must let both types be success-ful. We have as many ideas and ways to cope among us as there are minds and brains to think them. So we all need the space to allow differ-ences to occur and unfold without unkind judg-ment. I meet many who are taking counsel of their fears logically because the fears are there, real or

imagined. Folks resent it when they perceive that life with its surprises, burdens, and trials is not fair, because life isn’t fair. When psychological storms follow one upon the other we feel overwhelmed much like a terrible storm at sea and a sense of helplessness invades our present space. At any given time someone in our commu-nity is going through deep waters and some through the valley of the shadow of death. This gives us the obli-gation of tolerant kindness to allow them to weep, show anger and frustration, verbalize existential pain or per-haps see them reflect peace and serenity amid their tribulation. Folks cope in individualized ways comfortable only to them: some weep, that’s OK; some fight and argue, that’s OK; the cynic emerges, that’s OK; some scream, that’s OK; some rationalize, that’s OK; some resign to circumstances, that’s OK. The range of emotion and feelings can be huge. God understands and tolerates it all and if we really want to help, so should we, it is OK to be honest with God. We live among people who are not all honed to be tolerant, patient and kind to others, even those who are closest to them. Spouses and children often suffer and are victims of cruelty. Too often we are internally hostile to contrary behavior without asking, why is it so? In my older years, I choose more carefully to bathe the problems in understanding and tolerance before verbalizing harsh unkind words that I wish I had not said. If you are better at handling tough times and coping, consider it a true gift from God. Nourish the gift since your future tribulations may some day be put to the acid test. It is never out of style for the believing Christian to practice loving your neighbor or family member as your self. If someone falls, please help him up. Do cast all your care upon Him since this is His invitation to you to help you cope.

may be hospitalized, grieving the death of a loved one, separated or divorcing, homebound, unemployed, adjusting to the birth of a child, or otherwise experi-encing difficulties. Each of us has times when we are lonely, grieving, hurt, or in need of care. In his second letter to the Co-rinthians, Paul tells us that such troubles can bring spiritual growth to the sufferer. But when we who are in Christ suffer, we also find comfort through Christ, and one of the ways we find this comfort is through others who have found Christ’s care and comfort in their sufferings (2 Corinthians 1: 4-6). Our Stephen Ministers offer this Christ like care to those in need. Think about your life and the lives of the people around you. Are you going through a time of crisis or challenge? Do you know someone who is suffering from grief or loneliness? Is one of your friends struggling to find meaning in life after he or she has retired or after all the children have gone? Could you or someone you know benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister? If you have questions about the work of the Stephen Ministers in and around TUMC, feel free to call me or talk to one of our Stephen Ministers. The people who are so generously giving of their time and talents as Stephen Ministers are: Marilyn Barger, Joan Biddle, Cliff Elder, Connie French, Rev. David French (Stephen Minister trainer and contact person), Judy Hernandez, Hazel Hailstone, Todd Hailstone, Joyce Little, Thelma Loud, Diane Martinez, Joy Oh, Debra Potts, Hallie Sebanc, Norma Valle and Claire-Chapman Wright. Please consider whether you know of someone who needs their care. And I ask you to remem-ber them and their ministries in your thoughts and prayers. In Christ’s love, Rev. David French

Heartfelt ThanksHeartfelt ThanksHeartfelt ThanksHeartfelt Thanks Shirley and I want to express our sincere thanks to all of you who took the time to give a call, send a card, drop by for a visit, and even bring us delicious meals and other goodies. In those first days after my surgery, Shirley became my nurse and I be-came her patient. All of that TLC you be-stowed on us was very special, and we will always remember your caring. God bless you all. Pastor Randy

Gloria Harvey writes Gloria Harvey writes Gloria Harvey writes Gloria Harvey writes Dear Church Family, During my recovery from a nasty fall and hip surgery, I have been comforted by all your wonderful heartfelt cards filled with love and concern. When I read them they made me weep. A comforting weep, sort of like when your mom rocked you in the rocking chair and told you everything was going to be all right. Thanks for your prayers and caring. Loving, Gloria Harvey
