THE TRANSITION GENERATION:FROM PROGRAMMABLE SYSTEMS
TO COGNITIVE COMPUTINGMachines capable of learning, deciding, and creating will co-exist with us.
“
”
THOUGH IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE IT, OUR GENERATION IS LIVING THROUGH A GREAT PERIOD OF RAPID TRANSITION FROM CONVENTIONAL COMPUTING TO ARTIFICIALLY INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS.
THIS MOMENT IN TIME IS AKIN TO THE FEW DECADES WHEN THE STEAM ENGINE GAVE RISE TO THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, AND EDISON AND WESTINGHOUSE BROUGHT ELECTRICITY INTO OUR HOMES, OFFICES, SCHOOLS AND FACTORIES.
[ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE] IS THE NEW ELECTRICITY, AND OUR PERSONAL DATA IS WHAT’S GENERATING THE CURRENT.

WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE?What’s changing and how fast is it happening?
• Facebook uses “predictive algorithms” to show you what you are most likely to engage with (Like).
• And excludes information that is not likely to be within your worldview.
• Google uses “machine learning predictive response” to determine the answer to your question or search query.
• 2 years ago, less than 30% of searches were done on mobile devices. In 2018, over 80% of all searches are on mobile devices.
• Now, less than 30% of searches use “voice computing”, by 2020 50% of searches will be voice and 30% will involve no screen at all.
• Google is moving toward providing information before you actually search for it.
TRIPADVISOR
• TripAdvisor is moving away from “user generated content reviews” to “personalized recommendations and curated content”.

ONCE A NEW TECHNOLOGY ROLLS OVER YOU,
IF YOU’RE NOT PART OF THE STEAMROLLER,
YOU’RE PART OF THE ROAD.

WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY BUSINESS?Some specific steps you can take to stay ahead of the changes.
BE UP TO DATE IN THE
DATABASE
Every one of the systems uses a
database.
“Google My Business” is the most
prominent database, used by
most systems.
Download the mobile app and/or claim your business on Google Maps.
Regularly make sure the information
there is up to date and complete.
Operating Hours Contact Information Accurate Photos Check other places where your business is online to be sure
it’s updated at least annually:

LOOK FOR OPPORTUNITIES
In a chaotic world, there are
opportunities for success.
Don’t get overwhelmed. It’s not
rocket science. (Except for space tourism, which is, indeed, rocket
science.)
Take one solid step each week:
1. Update your Google Maps listing (“the database” includes others as well as Google).
2. Analyze your ROI from Facebook and other social marketing. A “Like” is not a dollar in your pocket.
3. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to market your business, but you do need to spend quality time to stay ahead.
4. Don’t be afraid of new markets in the search for new customers.
