P.E. This term students will be learning large ball skills, including soccer, Futsal, netball and Rippa Rugby. We are lucky enough to have Counties Manukau Tennis teaching our Year 5 and 6 students tennis skills in Weeks 2-4. Students are given the opportunity to try out for interschool sports teams. The Kio-rahi team h a s a l r e a d y b e e n finalised. If your child is in Year 5 or 6 and would like to be in a school soccer and/or rugby team they need to put their name on Mrs Cosford’s whiteboard outside her office. Students are encouraged to bring their P.E. uniform daily, as P.E. lessons are known to change. Our P.E. sessions are scheduled for: Pukeko 1 - Tuesday Ruru 3 - Tuesday Tui 3 - Wednesday Takahe 2 - Wednesday Tui 2 - Wednesday Welcome back to Term 2, we hope you had a relaxing Easter break. In the holidays, our 3 e-Learning classes moved into the relocatables on the field. The students and teachers have all settled into their new rooms. We have a busy term ahead, with assessments being carried out and Wearable Arts design and creating beginning. If you have any concerns and want to talk to your child’s teacher. H O M E W O R K It has been pleasing to see the quality of Homework being submitted each fortnight by students. We love sharing
the children’s efforts in class and occasionally we have time at our team assemblies. Please continue to encourage
your child to complete their homework.
Our homework expectations are:
★ SPELLING - Each week, the student will have a new spelling list of a minimum of 10 words. These need to be practised each night.
★ MATHS – 1000 points or more each week on Mathletics. Teachers will check this on Friday morning. ★ READING - Read for 20 minutes each weeknight. Students may choose from a variety of reading
material e.g. comic book, magazine, website etc. ★ HOW MUCH TO DO? All students will complete all the above plus one activity per week selected from
the grid. Year 4 students may do one activity per fortnight.
Teachers expect students to do the same quality of work at home as is expected at school. Work should follow our Book Standards, which will also be glued into the student’s Homework book. eLearning students turn their Homework in online. Please check their Homework Guidelines if you are unsure. These have been sent home and can be found on their Wikispace.
Our main inquiry topic of “Through the Decades”, has continued in Term 2, morphing into Technology, as students begin to use the knowledge learned about their class’ chosen decade to design and construct a piece of wearable art, to reflect the decade. When working with Mr Fowler, students will be learning skills that will help them construct their art, so it holds together well for performance and display.
In the first 3 weeks of term, students will be assessed as teachers prepare to write the mid-year report. Students are being assessed in areas of Literacy and Maths.
In Maths, students will be learning about Geometry, in particular, position and orientation. This relates to reading maps, co-ordinates, directions etc. Last term in writing, students were exposed to a variety of genre and learned a variety of skills, such as planning, language devices, sentence structure, proof reading and editing. This term students have a focus of “Writing to Entertain”, which is to write narrative and poetry.
