Background1st patent was granted in 1888 for an electronic
tablet used for handwriting.In 1915, a patent was granted for a tablet that
recognized handwritten characters by analyzing handwriting motion.
The 1st publicly demonstrated system using a tablet and handwriting text recognition instead of a keyboard for working with a modern digital computer was created in 1956.
In the 1980’s, many companies had commercial tablet products.
DevelopmentTablet computers are an
example of pen computing technology.
In 1968, Alan Kay attempted to create the Dynabook.
The idea was to give children access to digital media.
Motivation and funding came from the military who needed electronic, portable, documentation.
Apple Breaks into the Market
Apple started a tablet project in 1987, with an eventual release of the Apple Newton in 1993.
The Apple Newton had a 6” screen and weighed about 1.76 pounds.
The ipad has a 9.7” screen and weighs 1.33 pounds.
Microsoft Comes AlongIn 1999 Microsoft started a Tablet project.In 2000, they coined the term Microsoft Tablet PC for
tablets made to their specifications and running Microsoft Windows OS.
Targeted to address business needs; such as note taking devices and portable devices for field work.
Used in health care for data capturing.Did not become popular with consumers because of
problems: Too heavy to hold with one hand. Flaws Not enough apps specific to the tablets.
