Using SLV collections in the classroom

There are lots of ways to incorporate SLV resources into your teaching.

This is an example activity called ‘My Early Melbourne’ that shows how you can use SLV collection items and a free Web 2.0 application to create a classroom activity.

Making a Web 2.0 activity

To build your own Web 2.0 activity:

• gather images for your chosen topic – if you are using images from the SLV catalogue you can just right-click on them and choose ‘Save image as. . .’

• save them to a central folder and resize them if necessary (using your chosen image program – you can just use a simple one, like the software that comes with most digital cameras)

• create a Google account at: https://www.google.com/accounts - this will allow you to sign into Zoho notebook without needing to enter your own email address

Making a Web 2.0 activity (cont’d)

• Give students the ‘picture list’ documents so they can choose the images they want to use in their notebook

• Get students to log on as a group, using the same username and password that you have created, and the images that you have uploaded will all be there

• Remember that students must rename their books when they log on to keep their work separate and saved in their name

• Ask students to add images and then create text boxes to give further information about what the image contains
