The laying of Undersea Optical Fibre Cable Project between Chennai and Port Blair & seven Islands (viz. Little Andaman, Car Nicobar, Havelock, Kamorta, Campbell Bay, Rangat and Long Island) is a long term solution recommended by TRAI. Port Blair, Dec.24 The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has floated Request for Qualification (RFQ) inviting proposals from the potential developers for the Tourism Resort Projects at Long Island (Lalaji Bay), Smith Island and at Aves Island. These projects have been steered by the Island Development Agency (IDA) with the support of NITI Aayog. There will be substantial boost to the economy of these Islands in following ways: About 500 crores rupees will be invested in the Islands through these Public Partnership Projects in the Tourism Sector. Investments will be made primarily by the private developers and the A&N Administration will be providing support infrastructure. There will be paradigm shift in the profile in the hospitality industry in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. There not being even a single Star rated Hotel/Resort in these Islands, within the year 2018, One five Star Resort has already become operational at Havelock. RFQ floated for three Tourism projects under PPP mode at Long, Aves and Smith Islands in A&N Islands Lalaji Bay (Long Island) Smith Island Aves Island Port Blair, Dec.24 The Diglipur Tehsil, North Andaman has a CHC for 60,000 population and above. The CHC, Diglipur has the facility of 80 beds for in-patients, OPD services, Laboratory, Operation Theatre, X-Ray, Pharmacy, Refraction, USG, AYUSH with manpower of 6 General Duty Medical Officers of which 2 are from National Health Mission, besides Nurses, Paramedical staff such as Pharmacist, Lab Technician, Radiographer, Opth Assistant etc. About 400-500 OPD patients visit the CHC Diglipur per day for availing various health related facilities under Allopathy, AYUSH and Dental sections. The presence capacity of infrastructure, facility and manpower are insufficient to cater the need of increasing demand of patients at CHC Diglipur. It is proposed to upgrade CHC Diglipur to Sub District Hospital which shall have facilities viz General Medicine, General Surgery, Accidents and Emergency Services Upgradation of Community Health Centre Diglipur to Sub District Hospital Port Blair, Dec. 24 The UT Administration conceived the Solar based induction cooking to be an alternative to fossil fuels for remotely located villages/hamlets. A project under the aegis of MNRE has been conceived in consultation with IIT Mumbai to provide Solar Based Induction Cooking Stove to such village/ hamlet. Tsunami Shelters Home, Chouldari village, South Andaman District is one of the first hamlet in the country to implement the project. All the 99 households in the hamlet have been provided with Solar Based Induction Cooking Stove under the CSR initiative implemented by EESL. There will be around 1.2 lakh units of energy saved per year with monetary savings of Rs. 22 lakhs per annum besides the reduction of carbon footprint. The salient features of the pilot project includes: Avoided use of conventional fuel by the Alternative to fossil fuels for remotely located villages/hamlets Chouldari Tsunami Shelter is one of the first in the country to implement Solar Based Induction Cooking Stove project Port Blair, Dec.24 Under the 'Look East' policy of Govt. of India, Andaman & Nicobar Administration in active coordination with various line Ministries of Govt. of India has already started exchange of dialogues with the South East Asian Countries, by giving emphasis on trade between A&N Islands and South East Asian Countries. Under the above initiative and as per the direction of Island Development Agency held on 30th June 2018 under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister of India, the A&N Administration was working on the possibilities of directly importing material, specially construction materials in these Islands from the neighbouring countries to make the articles more cost effective in comparison from bringing from mainland India. Accordingly the custom duties on articles viz. Sawn Timber, Wooden logs, Waiver of Customs duty for Import of Products from ASEAN Countries VC Pondicherry University to inaugurate Academic Building Port Blair, Dec.24 Prof. Gurmeet Singh, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University will be on an official visit to these Islands from Dec.26 to 31, 2018. During his stay, he will be inaugurating the new academic building at Pondicherry University Campus, Brookshabad on Dec.26 at 4.30 pm. He will also be visiting all the colleges and institutes affiliated to Pondicherry University in Port Blair. Prof. Singh will also be visiting Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College at Mayabunder, a communication from the Pondycherry University said. A Christmas eve programme

was organized by the St.

Mary's Orthodox Cathedral

(SMOC) Mohanpura at its

premises befittingly here

yesterday. The Secretary

Education, Shri D.

Maniknadan as the chief

guest inaugurated the

programme by lighting the

oil lamp. In his message, the

chief guest said Christmas

is the celebration of the

eternal and omnipresent

values of compassion,

forgiveness and universal

love that Jesus stood for.

While appreciating the

cultural programme

presented by the children,

he also extended his

Christmas greeting to all.

Children of the Cathedral

presented a colourful

cultural show viz. dandiya

dance, choir songs, bible

reading, nativity skit etc.,

during the celebration which

was presided over by the

Vicar St. Mary's Cathedral Fr.

Abey. M. Chacko.

The much awaited

'Andaman Marathon-2019' is all

set to be held on Feb.3, 2019.

All arrangements for organizing

the 8th edition of the Andaman

Marathon by the Andaman

Chamber of Commerce &

Industry (ACCI) are going on

in full swing and more than 1500

participants are expected to

participate in various categories,

this year, said the President,

ACCI, Shri Girish Arora while

addressing the scribes at a press

conference organized by ACCI

at TSG Emerald View here this

evening. The Chairman,

Andaman Marathon, Shri Mohd.

Jadwet, Chairman (Technical

Committee, Andaman

Marathon), Shri G. Bhasker and

Shri Krishna, member of ACCI

were also present on the

occasion.

Shri Arora further informed

that this year too, the Lt.

Governor, A&N Islands has

been requested to flag off the

event from the historic Cellular

Jail and also distribute the prizes

to the winners at Netaji Stadium.

The Commander-in-Chief, A&N

Command and the Chief

Secretary, A&N Administration

have also been requested to

attend the flag off event as well

The Andaman Marathon is

annually organized by the ACCI

in association with the A&N

Administration with the objective

to put the Andaman Islands in

the global arena and to promote

and create awareness for a

healthy life style. The tag line for

the event is 'Swachch Andaman'

aimed at creating awareness

among Islanders to keep the

Islands clean, added the

President ACCI.

Giving details of the event,

the Chairman of the Andaman

Marathon, Shri Jadwet informed

that Shri Rahul Bose, Brand

Ambassador of Andaman

Marathon and a celebrity guest

is expected to attend the event.

He further informed that the

Andaman Marathon has four

events viz. Half Marathon, 10K

(Male& Female), 10K (Seniors)

and 10K (Boys & Girls) with a

total prize money of Rs. 9 lakhs.

The prize for Half Marathon

category - open to all (only

Indian Nationals are eligible for

prize money) is Rs. 60,000, Rs.

40,000, Rs. 25,000 & Rs.

15,000 for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd &

4th positions respectively for

both male and female. In the 10K

Open (Islanders only) Rs. 40,

000, Rs. 30,000, Rs. 25,000 &

Rs 15,000 for the first four

positions (both male & female)

respectively. In the 10K

(Seniors- Islanders only) Rs.

40,000, Rs. 30,000, Rs. 25,000

& Rs. 15,000 for the first four

positions (male & female)

respectively. In the 10K (Boys

& Girls-Islanders only) Rs.

Shri Jadwet also informed

that the prize money has been

restricted to Indian Nationals/

Islanders only. The registrations

for all the events are taking

place in ACCI office besides the

registration forms are also

available at Directorate of Sports

& Youth Affairs, online and

Newspapers cut outs. The

registrat ion fee for Half

Marathon is Rs. 500 while for

the 10 K (open- Islanders only)

is Rs. 300, 10 K (Seniors) is

Rs. 300 and 10K (Boys& Girls)

is Rs. 200. Apart from this, there

will be a 'Run for Fun' event

which will be open to all.

Participants will be provided t-

shirts, refreshments and those

who complete the event will be

given medals & certificates.

The Chairman, Technical

Committee, Andaman Marathon,

Shri G Bhaskar informed that

technical details are being

worked out with Directorate of

Sports & Youth Affairs to ensure

free and fair participation. About

300 people will monitor the

event besides volunteers from

ACCI. He said, last year about

380 youngsters have

participated and this year, the

number is expected to increase

to 500. The categories of the

event has also been increased

and the age for the event 10K

(Boys & Girls) have been

reduced from 15 to 14 years.

Participants in this category

should be 14 years as on 3. 2.

This was perused by A&N Administration at the highest level and accordingly Union

Cabinet under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister approved the project in

September 2016.

The project is anchored by DOT and implemented by BSNL. The total project cost is

around Rs.1232 crores. The BSNL has issued the final work order to Japanese firm on

June 2018. The project will be completed within 24 months.

The Undersea Optical Fibre Cable Project connecting Andaman and Nicobar Islands

with mainland will provide abundant bandwidth which will help A&N Administration to

implement e-Governance initiatives and Developmental schemes till last mile effectively.

In addition the outreach of quality Education and Health care will also improve

substantially by using Tele-education and Tele-medicines for serving last mile. The

A&N Administration has also taken initiatives to create conducive environment for

establishing IT &ITeS Industry for employment generation once the Undersea fibre

cable project is implemented, a communication from the OSD (IT) said here today.

The Prime Minister of India is likely to announce the project during his visit to this
