Principal’s Greeting
October was a special month in this, our 75th anniversary year. On
October 15th, we welcomed our new Director, Mr Handrigan, on the
day we were celebrating a mass of memory for the 50th anniversary of
Monsignor Ronan‘s passing. Alumni Donald Wainman and Walter
Ross, who were part of the school when it began in 1937, spoke to
the boys about their experiences as choristers 75 years ago.
It was wonderful to hear the sound of the entire student body singing
together at the conclusion of the Founder‘s Day Concert. For those families new to our
school, it powerfully conveyed a sense of community achieved through music. With stu-
dents from Grade 3 to Grade 12, the school‘s mission, ‗to educate boys to become men
through the service of sacred music‘, was evident for all to see and hear.
Our initial Alumni Homecoming event was a great success – the start of an annual tradi-
tion. It was heartening to see a number of our Grade 12 students join the alumni choir at
mass in the Cathedral and it was wonderful to connect with past students and staff at the
reception that followed the mass.
We head into November looking forward to progress reports, parent interviews, Remem-
brance Day, as well as all of the various extra-curricular activities as we gear up for Massey
Hall with rehearsals and ticket sales. At the end of November, we wrap up the Church
year with the Feast of Christ the King.

Director’s Message—Mr. S. Handrigan
Since my arrival I have been overwhelmed with the warm welcome I have received here at SMCS. Fr. Michael
Busch and Barry White have been outstanding mentors for me thus far, and I can assure you that we are working
as a team to ensure the continued success of the school.
I have had the privilege of being a part of a number of great events since Founder‘s Day. Mr. Walter Ross (SMCS
‘42) and Mr. Donald Wainman (SMCS ‘44), who were among the first students admitted to the school in 1937,
addressed our boys in the Auditorium before the Founder‘s Day Mass and shared their memories of their time at
the Choir School. It was a pleasure to hear them speak of Msgr. Ronan‘s influence on shaping their lives. At the
Founder‘s Day Mass I experienced hearing all of the boys sing together for the first time. It was a musical and spiri-
tual experience I will always remember.
On October 19th, the Founder‘s Day Concert, From Courts on High, featured the original music of Msgr. Ronan,
Msgr. Armstrong (SMCS ‘44) and Tomáš Dušatko (SMCS ‘71), as well as arrangements by Jerzy Cichocki (SMCS
‘77) and Kola Owolabi (SMCS ‘96). The concert was a beautiful tribute to the rich musical legacy of St. Michael‘s
Choir School.
The Remembrance Day Ceremony taking place in the Cathedral on Sunday, November 11th at 2:30 p.m. is being organized and conducted by
our Grade 12 students. I have been so impressed by the dedication, creativity and care
that these young men have brought to the rehearsal process leading up to the ceremony;
and I know you will be all very proud of their work.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Massey Hall Committee for the tireless
work they have done to ensure that every logistic detail for the upcoming Christmas Con-
cert is in place. I am truly grateful for your dedication and support. I have spent my first weeks at SMCS witnessing the unique culture of this outstanding
school, and I am truly amazed by the unwavering dedication of our students, staff and par-
ents. Over the coming months I am looking forward to meeting all of the SMCS parents.
If you are in the neighbourhood, please feel free to drop by my office anytime to introduce
yourself.
Last week I received a beautiful letter from Mr. Levi Malloy. In his letter he expresses his gratitude to St. Michael‘s Choir School. I have scanned
the letter (see below) for all of you to read. This letter reminds us of the profound effect that the power of music can have on one‘s life.
ADMIRER OF ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL
To the Gentlemen of The Saint Michael's Boys Choir!
I am writing you this letter in awe and admiration of the talent and grace in what it is
that you do. I first thought of penning this letter back in July , but perhaps figured it
more fitting for a late October, early November arrival;) As I imagine you all now
preparing yourself and toning up for the annual Christmas concert. Just wanted to let
you know that I had the pleasure years ago to come to one of your Holiday shows,
although many of you today weren't part of the blessings it has bestowed upon me, you
are behind the name just the same.
As a young boy I grew up listening to The St. Michael's Boys Choir- The Heavens Are
Telling" (To name one album), I have listened to. it many times with my Family as we
shared in the joys that the Christmas Season always brings. But it was #12's, Ave Maria
by Franz Biebl, that has always moved me beyond words. So it was to my great pleasure
and amazement many years later to hear it live!!!! It was the most beautiful gift I
received that year © It was as if the skies had opened up and heavens light filled Massey
Hall for six whole minutes, touching the ears of all who were blessed enough to be there
that evening! I couldn't hold the tears back, and still can't when I hear it! One of my
most treasured Christmas moments ever, and to this day the most angelic thing I have
ever heard! I've been coming back almost every year since with my Family.
These words are in thanks and encouragement for you, The St. Michael's Boys Choir
(Past and Present) for it was within your voices I felt Heaven.
So let me be the first to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
Your faithful Fan,
Levi Malloy

Our amazing Junior Choir Mother Ministry 2012-13: Marilou Gatchalian, Sharon Gittens, Siana Mochocki, and Diane Scaramuzza and our Junior Choir Parent Cof-fee Ministry Coordinator: Chee-Kong Leong. (Photo taken by David Gatchalian, our Sunday Washroom Break Supervisor!) The Junior Choir is a special community within the greater St. Michael's Choir School community. When parents are able to volunteer (I know it is not always easy to do!), I believe they are sending a wonderful message to the boys because they are blessing others through their service... a very Christ-like virtue! Every Sunday, a team of parent volunteers are involved in making the Junior Choir rehearsal and parent coffee time run smoothly. Mr. Leong is coordinating the coffee time this year,
and he has garnered the continued support of two local Starbucks locations. Each week, these Starbucks donate coffee and snacks. A group of parents take turns picking up, setting up, and cleaning up the snacks which are enjoyed by parents and the Junior Choir alike! When the boys arrive between 8:15am and 8:40am, our Choir Mothers are already present. They are ready to help in any way, from last minute soutane adjustments to helping a boy who is feeling unwell, while also maintaining a routine of regular tasks including monitoring attendance, setting up the rehearsal space, supervising the crosswalk, and more. This team of dedicated volunteers make the Junior Choir Sundays run so smoothly. Thanks to all of our Junior Choir volunteers for blessing us through your ongoing service.

RETREAT
This year St. Michael‘s held its third annual grade 9 overnight Retreat from Monday
October 22 through to Wednesday October 24. Twenty grade nines, seven stu-
dent leaders in the upper grades, and three staff made their way up to camp Mus-
koka for three full days of archery, zip lining, high ropes, in line skating, hiking,
team building, and of course, evenings filled with man-hunt.
One of the highlights was the prayer service and commissioning on Tuesday eve-
ning focused around the theme of brotherhood and unity as a school, and unity
within their houses.
The student leaders, Joshua Rossetti, Zachary Crichton, Aaron Groh, Colin Granitto, Joey Jang, Christian Glab, and Michael
DelGrosso provided excellent leadership for the grade 9s during the excursion.
Finally a special thank you to Mme. Abou-Merhi, Mr. Kovacs, and Mr.
Hume for coming up to the three days. Also, thanks goes out to Mr.
White who joined us for the Tuesday evening prayer service and whose
powerful words of wisdom inspired everyone during the commissioning.

Student Council Report – October 2012
With the added rehearsals, masses, and various other activities that happen around the Choir School during the month of October, the Student Council has been working on a number of different events and activities to improve student life in our school and in our community! In last month’s newsletter, we mentioned our annual Thanksgiving Can Drive. The drive wrapped up just before the Thanksgiving long-weekend, and as a school, we were able to raise over 900 cans! Thank you and congratulations to everyone for their support! We are very appreciative of the large efforts we can make together as a school commu-nity to positively impact the lives of those less fortunate than we are, and we look forward to running the Can Drive
again next year. Early in the month of October, we held our first introductory High School House System event. Beginning with an assembly, our incoming Grade 9’s were introduced to the house system, inducted into their new house, and Grade 11 House Captains were elected within each house. Following the assembly, we ran our annual Spartan Dodgeball event where the newly assembled houses battled it out on the gym floor. Despite a three-way tie, the Mann house came out on top to take the lead in the house point standings. For Halloween festivities this year, we decided to integrate the house system by having houses use their artistic and creative talents in a Pumpkin Carving Competition, Halloween Window Decorating Challenge, and of course, a Costume Contest! The hard work of each house paid off as they all received points in each of the events, judged by our three staff judges, Mr. Hume, Mr. Kovacs, and Mr. White. In the end, the Armstrong house took the top spot away from the Mann house in the house point standings! With so much going on for the High School House System, you can rest assured knowing that we are working on establishing the framework for implementing the House System into the Elementary panel within the next year. Finally, because of the impact and effectiveness of last year’s Fall Student Sur-vey, we will be conducting another survey this year to obtain feedback from our students regarding various issues concerning the students and student-life here at the Choir School. More details to come! Patrick Parro President St. Michael’s Choir School Student Council 2012-2013

Canonization of Kateri Tekakwitha– in Rome –Sunday, October 21, 2012
Up until this summer, I had not heard much about Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. When
visiting my dear old friend Archbishop Pettipas out west, he invited me to join in on
an annual pilgrimage of the native people. While celebrating mass, he preached about
the life of Kateri Tekakwitha an appropriate topic since Kateri was a Canadian Na-
tive. Archbishop Pettipas invited me to attend her canonization. Here is a synopsis of
my knowledge and experience of a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Summary of Kateri Tekakwitha’s Life
Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, was a Mohawk-Algonquin woman who lived from 1656
to 1680 in what is now upstate New York and Kahnawake (near Montreal).
At the very young age of
four, she lost her mother (a Christian), father (non-Christian) and a brother
to a small pox epidemic. Close to death herself, she survived. However, the
disease left her with scars on her face which disfigured her for life. Her eyes
were also weakened that she almost lost her eyesight. Now an orphan, she
moved in with her Uncle and Aunt who were non-Christians. In her late
teens, she was able to flee from family and village persecutions due to her
disfigurement and devotion to Christianity. She refused to engage in local
gossip, young girls‘ amusements which alienated her by the village. She fled to
the Sault Mission. She felt she was living in an earthly paradise. This devout
maiden, dedicated her life to her God. She was a tremendous influence on
the people around her. The Black Robes (Jesuit Missionaries) were touched
by her life of devotion and penance. Finally at the age of 20 she was baptised
which was also followed by her First Holy Communion. At this point in her
life, she felt truly blessed which allowed her to feel closer to God. With her continued personal acts of penance, her body was
weakened even more. It was quite fitting that Kateri Tekakwitha died on April, 17, 1680 - Holy Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
Miracle
On the night before the canonization, there was a vigil of Blessed Kateri Tekak-
witha‘s life that incorporated the most recent miracle. A film documentary was
also shown.
In 2006 at the age of 6 years old, Jake Finkbonner was playing basketball. He
was inadvertently bumped and fell. He split his lip on the base of the basketball
hoop base. Jake picked up bacteria which then progressed into a flesh eating
disease. Within hours his face was extremely swollen that it was difficult to
distinguish his facial features. His scalp was so raw in appearance. After daily
operations, the doctors had no resolution. Jake‘s mom, a woman of extreme
faith, had asked the help of her family, friends and the community to please
pray to Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha for her son Jake. A friend of the family knew
of Sister Kateri Mitchell. Sr. Kateri visited Jake in the hospital. She placed a relic
of Kateri Tekakwitha (a piece of her wrist bone) on his chest. Within minutes
the disease stopped progressing. The doctors were impressively surprised. Even though they were not of the catholic faith there was
no explanation other than it being a miracle.
In the documentary, you see Jake at the worst time of the disease that racked his body. It also features Jake presently as a vibrant 12
year old still playing basketball. His face still has ruminants of the disease but through it all has a brilliant smile. I had the pleasure of
seeing Jake in person. What an exceptional boy. I can‘t imagine what it would be like to have experienced an enormous miracle.

PENNY DRIVE
At SMCS we create the change. In support of Free the Children, we have
launched a penny drive. ―Collect pennies. Make change.‖ Even pennies,
when added together, can have a huge impact. Collect pennies to help us
reach our goal of providing a sustainable source of clean water. Donating
pennies may seem like a small action, but when everyone in our school
chips in, your change amounts to global impact. For every 2500 pennies
we collect, we provide clean water for a person in a developing country
for life.

ECO CLUB: New in November is the eco-literacy section in the library. We want all SMCS readers to know about God's changing world and make choices to im-
prove the health of the planet. For instance you might read about biomimicry, where one looks to nature for solutions. One famous example is velcro,
invented after examining how burrs come stuck fast to a dog's fur.
Also ―NEW‖ is our ―Eco-snack Thursdays‖ as part of SMCS's waste-free lunch. Be sure to bring some coins to buy a treat, while they last. We will even
accept Canadian Tire money! All proceeds will go towards replenishing the mulch for our 3 sturdy trees in our school yards. We will use the Canadian
Tire money to make purchases for our greening project. Please contact Alessia Presotto (parent of Erik Gillis, gr. 8) to help with a greening incentive for
our school yard. We welcome all ideas! [email protected].

A NICE SURPRISE FROM MICHAEL SCHADE TO SELECTED STUDENT OF ST. MICHAEL’S CHOIR SCHOOL: Michael Schade kindly treated the students at the Choir School to the Dress Rehearsal of ‘Die Fledermaus’ .Everyone was thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to meet him and have a photo with him at intermission.
It‘s November and for those of you that have been here for the past few years, you are likely asking yourselves:
where are the chocolates, magazines or books to sell? Don‘t we usually have a fall fundraiser in support of CSAC
initiatives? Over the past few years a shift has been taking place with a focus on more community-based service-
oriented revenue generating activities such as the lunch program, which is having its most successful session ever at
over 150+ hungry students, staff and teachers (big thanks for all the volunteers that come out week after week);
now two uniform exchanges; as well as the annual bake sale (where we always run out). The result of which is
CSAC finds itself in a strong financial position very similar to previous years (without a fall fundraiser). As such, at
the last CSAC meeting a broad discussion was had, the result of which is that the normally planned fall fundraiser
was deferred for this year as we all recognize the extraordinary asks that are being placed on the families of the
Choir School in our 75th year.
That is not to say that we are off the hook as a parent community as the Massey Hall Campaign is just about upon
us and we are looking forward to new and exciting lineups, seasonal favourites, and hopefully two sold-out houses.
The Massey Hall concerts represent a huge opportunity to generate revenues for the school and every empty seat
is 100% lost profit as they the show will go on whether that seat is filled or not. So tell all your families, friends,
business associates, send out e-mails, post it on social media and use the old-fashioned telephone to get out there
and sell-out the hall cause I can tell you from experience singing out in front of a packed house is an electric ex-
perience for the boys.
Finally, with Massey Hall which means extra rehearsals, class piano recitals and athletic events in full swing makes
for a very busy November and with Christmas around the corner, it is easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and
bustle. However, one quiet event that takes place every year is the Remembrance Day service at the Cathedral.
This year it takes place on Monday November the 12th at 10:30am and what makes this special is that the entire
program is usually planned, produced and performed by the Grade 12 graduating class. This is one of the few
times that we will have the opportunity to see these young men perform together as a class. This ceremony is al-
ways that more poignant since these young men are of a similar age and who exemplify through their service and
sacrifice that we also remember.

Semester 1 | Cooking Fun! Phat Le + Alixander Pawluk
Far East Taco + Chili Combat
To mark the school's 75th anniversary, we decided to commence something new, something that hasn't been done at the
choir school before: a cooking club! This is the very first cooking club organized here at SMCS. With the help of Mrs. Mor-
ris, Mrs. Thorne, Mrs. Dunn, and Mrs. Krechkovsky, our goal is to introduce a new skill to the students here - one they can
use whenever they're having a hunger crisis. So instead of reaching into the cupboards for a box of Kraft Dinner or a pack-
age of ramen, they could make a cheap, much healthier meal!
We would like to thank the Hollott-Lo family, the Cheng family, and the Riola family for their generosity and their donations
towards the cooking club.
So for the month of October, the cooking club was able to complete three dishes: a Korean-fusion style taco, a hearty tra-
ditional beef chilli, and a sweet potato vegetarian chilli.
