GRADUATING CLASS 2015
As another rewarding year at the Choir School draws to a close, we look back with gratitude for the many blessings that have been bestowed on our school over the past ten months. June, like every other month at the Choir School, was packed with activities including Festival of the Arts, EQAO tests, piano and vocal recitals, High School and RCM exams and our various closing ceremonies. As we look back at what our students have accomplished this year, we are again reminded that we are blessed to be part of a special school community.
The unexpected closure of the Cathedral in June was met with flexibility on the part of all. Greatly appreciated is the work of so many parent volunteers who made the reception after the Closing Ceremonies such a success, adapting quite smoothly to the last minute change of loca-tion. Hats off as well to the parents who helped plan the Grade 8 Graduation celebration. The new location at Li Ka Shing Institute, with a beautiful view of the Cathedral, made for an elegant luncheon. This school would not be what it is without the on-going support and efforts of our School Council and parent volunteers involved with everything from weekend masses, hot lunches, coaching, fundraising, Massey Hall, tour planning and help with our in-take Saturdays through-out the winter. The home school partnership is one of the great strengths of the Choir School. We wish our graduates, featured on the cover of this newsletter outside of St Paul’s Basilica on the night of their graduation, all the very best as they head off to their various post-secondary programs. We thank them for their years of commitment and encourage them to stay connect through the alumni association. Among our recently added Newsletter recipients, we say hello and welcome our new students and their families to the Choir School. May all of you be blessed with health, rest and joy during the summer months that lie ahead of us.
Sincerely yours
Mr. B. White Principal

As I write this final newsletter article for the school year, St. Michael’s Choir School is a series of deserted buildings on Bond Street. What a profoundly strange place this is without students! Reflecting back on this past year I am filled with wonderful memories of the many beautiful Masses and celebrations in the Cathedral, the highly successful tour of Newfoundland, the run-out concert in Kitchener, the triumph we experi-enced at Massey Hall, and the beautiful recitals. Most importantly, I am grateful
for the gift of St. Michael’s Choir School. Msgr. Ronan’s vision remains vibrant and I am grateful to all the members of our SMCS community who have worked hard over the past year to implement much of our Strategic Plan. There is still lots of work to be done; however, I am confident that we will continue to work together to achieve our collective vision for SMCS. In September, we will have an exchange student from the Liebfrauenschule in Cologne, Germany with us at St. Michael’s Choir School for the first semester. Simon Luettmer will be in Grade 10 and will be hosted by Thomas Clifford and his family. Simon is also a chorister in the Cologne Ca-thedral Boys’ Choir. In late January, both Thomas and Simon will return to Cologne to complete the school year. I am also happy to let you know that SMCS has also developed an exchange pro-gramme with the Regensburger Domspatzen in Regensburg, Germany. The Regensburger Domspatzen, founded in 975, is one of the oldest boys’ choirs in the world. Andrew Buzdon, also in Grade 10, will travel to Regensburg in September and will be hosted for the first semester by Ben-jamin Kunze. Both Andrew and Benjamin will return to SMCS in late January to complete the school year. On behalf of the entire SMCS Community, I warmly welcome Simon and Benjamin to our school. With the temporary closure of St. Michael’s Cathedral, our Choral Masses for much of the 2015-2016 school year will move to St. Paul’s Basilica. Our first Choral Masses for the year begin on the weekend of September 19/20. The Mass times are as follows: Saturday 6:00 pm Senior Choir, Sun-day 9:30 am Junior Choir, Sunday 1:00 pm Senior Choir. Please make note of these Mass times as they are different from our normal Cathedral schedule. To assist with your long-term planning, please note that there will be NO CHORAL DUTIES on the weekend of March 12/13, 2016. This is the first weekend of the March Break. This change in schedule allows boys and their fami-lies to have a full 7 days of uninterrupted March Break. Please note that all boys are expected to sing on the weekend of March 19/20 – Palm Sunday. Thank you all for your support of St. Michael’s Choir School. I wish you all a safe, relaxing and renewing summer ahead. Sincerely,
Stephen Handrigan— Director
Dear Parents, We are happy to announce that we will be implementing three uniform changes for the 2015-16 Aca-demic Year. The process to achieve this took many months and input from all stakeholders. A huge thank you to everyone! The following three changes will come into effect in the 2015-16 Academic Year
The dark shoe policy will be grandfathered in over the next four years. The dark shoe policy will be implemented for incoming Grade 9 students. Students will only be able to wear solid dark black, blue or brown shoes with no colour markings. However, we en-courage all high school grades (10-12) to wear dark shoes beginning September 2015.
A quarter-zip blue (High School) and maroon (Elementary School) sweater will be introduced and added to the uniform for September 2015. This will be in addition to the existing V-neck sweater. The main purpose of the quarter-zip is to keep students warm and in uniform throughout the winter months. With the introduction of the quarter-zip sweater, no hoodies/sweaters etc. will be allowed to be worn in the school, during school hours. The quarter-zip sweater can be purchased online through Entripy or e-mail Mr. Tarascio.
A new maroon tie, embossed with the SMCS logo, will be introduced in the 2015-2016 Academic Year. This tie will replace the maroon tie and every family is being asked to order the new tie by September 30, 2015. To do so, an order form has been added to the newsletter. Please fill in the form and return it with a cheque or money to the main office between August 31 and September 30, 2015. The cost of the tie will be 2 for $40 or 1 for $25. It is our hope that every boy will have their new tie by the end of October 2015.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected] or [email protected] in the first week of July or beginning again in the last week of August. Sincerely, St. Michael’s Choir School Administration

Hi, my friend Julius and I (Benedikt) would like to share with you the experiences we made while on our exchange, each
of us talking about their time in the exchange country.
Hi everybody, and Congrat-
ulations for another suc-
ceeded school year! Now, 5
months after leaving Toron-
to, I still have in mind what
a good time I had at SMCS.
When I decided to go to
Canada, I was very scared,
but happy as well. Canada,
the second largest country
in the world; Toronto, three
times bigger than Cologne, and a Canadian high school with school uni-
form, which most of the Germans only know from Hollywood movies; I knew that this trip would be a big journey for
me. The start at SMCS wasn’t easy for me, I didn’t know anybody and I didn’t speak the language very well. Then, after
3 Weeks, I met new friends and I improved my English skills until I could communicate very well. I had so many good
experiences at your school: After school you have school teams, everyday you have the same schedule, choir is included
in daily schedule. Canadians in general seem to be much friendlier and more
helpful than the most people in my home country, and you have those famous
yellow school busses … I enjoyed the time at SMCS so much because you made
it easy for me getting a real school member and I had the possibility meeting a
new culture and you were giving me a new perspective on my own world in Co-
logne. That was actually the best experiences in this exchange program. In Cana-
da, I was reading newspaper articles about my home country and I realized that I
live in an awesome, wonderful organized and strong country (as youJ). I met
new people with exceptional personal stories and I was really in to the Canadian
way of life. I will always be a supporter of the Canadian Hockey Team. Now, I
look back and I can say that this time was the best time in my life. I wish to
come back having the possibility seeing you soon
Kind regards,
Julius Breer
Now I (Benedikt) would like to share with you what it was like returning, if only for half a year, to my beloved Cologne. The time I
have spent here was the best I ever had. I got to attend the LFS
(Liebfrauenschule), which was also the school which my brother attended
while we still lived in Cologne. I had absolutely no problem finding friends, as
everybody was extremely friendly and accepted me immediately.
The exchange was a very positive experience for me, but it wasn't all easy. The
change of school systems, which everybody going on an exchange would have
to endure, is not a simple task. It takes a while to get used to what the teachers
expect of you, but all that is possible with the right support. Other problems
that future exchange students might encounter are, of course, the problem of
not being very fluent in the language, German.
The exchange was definitely an enriching experience for me, and I don't think
that anybody who wants to go on an exchange should be scared. In Germany, people from North America are cool, you don't have to
be afraid of not being accepted. If you’re worried about the language then don't be. Everybody in Germany speaks very good English,
so if you are struggling, you can just ask for help.
All in all, I am very happy that I did this exchange.

Thanks to the Learning Partnership and our BMO squad, this year's grade 7/8 class got the
amazing opportunity to use our academic skills in a real life situation. We turned this year's
annual Festival of the Arts into an entrepreneurial adventure. We made a logo and a new name
for this yearly event, FOTA'15. We had art, talent acts, musical theater, and much more. There
were fundraisers during the event, and, of course, we made some money. To be exact, $800. .
Our charity is St. Michael’s Cathedral Renovation Project. We presented a cheque for $800 to
Father Kwon at the grade 8 graduation. The money will go to the purchase of the statue of St.
Bartholomew, one of the 12 apostles. We can look back years from now and be proud of the
fact that our Entrepreneurial Adventure of 2014-2015 proudly raised money to be part of the
reconstruction of the Cathedral in this historical moment.

This year. the Eco-Club had a very bountiful vermi-composter in room 411. It has produced healthy compost material that we proudly sold at the FOTA15. We thank all those families that purchased a cup full of nutrient-dense vermicompost for their gardens. We thank you and your garden will thank you! Your support is much appreciated. The Eco Club is excited to announce that it has received a grant of $750 from the Toyota Ever-green Foundation that will allow us to begin construction on some raised flowerbeds in front of the playground. Building will begin in September, and will help us kick off the 2015-2016 Eco Club season. Look for a crop of microgreens in autumn, followed by a spring crop of beans, squash, and sunflowers! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer gardener during the next school year, please contact Mme. Locurto at [email protected]. Have a green summer!

Grade 7 and 8 Fishing Trip at Burd’s Family Fishing There’s nothing like a day spent outside in good company to help celebrate the end of the school year. This year, grades 7 and 8, along with Mme. Locurto, Mr. Rubacha, Mr. Tarascio and Ms. Rosser-Davies headed to Whitchurch-Stouffville to enjoy fun in the sun at Burd’s Family Fishing, While Mr. Tarascio fired up the BBQ, students baited their hooks and cast their lines into the two ponds at the trout farm and began to reel in rainbow trout. When everyone had caught a fish, we relaxed in the beautiful sun, played soccer, practiced our cast-ing and enjoyed delicious burgers and hot dogs from the grill. Mme. Locurto stuffed a few fish with fresh dill and lemon, seasoned them and drizzled them with olive oil to cook on the BBQ. What a treat! At the end of the day, the staff at Burd’s packed everyone’s catch on ice and bagged them up. Grade
7 and 8 families were eating well that day! Thanks to the parent volunteers who lent a hand with this excursion, and to the staff at Burd’s Family Fishing, who hosted us for the second year. We
can’t wait to come back next year!
