July 2007 Directors Message Wow!!! The North Cascades Region sure did a good job of putting on this year’s Northwest Meet. Everyone I’ve spo-ken with was impressed with how well it was organized. 119 registrations, the weather was perfect, the tours were great, and the police escort through Toppenish was a special touch. At the banquet our Puget Sound Region won the “Region Par-ticipation Award”. Leigh Wilcox presented an award to Dave Haddock for editing the Tappet Clatter. The VCCA presi-dent (Don Williams) attended the meet, gave a speech on the future of VCCA, and assisted in presenting judging awards. Congratulations to our award winners: Dick Olson, Don Boltz, Jake Jacobs, Gary Barquist, and Jerry Jacobs. See the list of awards in this issue. On Saturday morning during the meet there was a short directors meeting held by Leigh Wilcox and attended by Don Williams. Changes to National and Area 3 policies to make meets, and membership, more attractive were discussed but more time was needed to properly review the issues. Another directors meeting will be scheduled for later this year giving more time to continue the discussion. For Sunday, August 12th, Jerry Brownell and Al Howe have put together a neat summer tour to Crystal Mountain. See details in this issue. Don’t forget our Region’s 40th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, August 25th. A team of volunteers planning the gathering are making sure this will be a memorable event. Previous old time members are being invited to join us for this occasion. A return to Fort Borst Park in Centralia, the original gathering place for the Puget Sound Region will be an ex-perience for our newer members to see where it all started. This is one of our major event for the year, let’s make it a good one, hope to see you there. See details in this issue and past issues. On Monday August 27th is our always fun meeting at the XXX in Issaquah. That should keep us all busy attending at least one, two, or all of these August functions. See you there. Another item of possible interest to some is that the Buick Club of America is having their first National meet held in the Northwest at the Bellevue Hilton this July. Over 250 cars of all vintages are expected. Some cars from the Heritage Mu-seum in Flint Michigan are being trailered here to be on display in the hotel ball room. Some new GM concept cars are be-ing trailered here for display in the ball room also. The best time for public viewing will be Saturday, July 28th 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the Hilton parking Lot. Bill Damm

2007 Northwest Meet (Cont. from page 1) They met National members Jeff and Jonnie Inglis from Boise, ID, who had a ‘31 four door. It was their first meet and our group tried to make them feel welcome. They had water pump problems so Bill Barker and Dick Olson helped fix that while at Ft. Simcoe so they didn’t get to see any of the Fort but did get the ‘31 back on the road. “Going thru Toppenish we were surprised to find police blocking all intersections so we could drive right thru, that was a great touch.” The Meet concluded Saturday evening with a banquet for all attendees. Club Meeting Survey Form Watch For This!

All members with email will receive a message later this month containing an electronic sur-vey form as a PDF file. This form will make it easy for members to indicate what type of pro-gram they would like to see at our General Meetings. Lee and I have put together a list of 25 potential program ideas and would like you to rate them. 1 = Strongly interested, 2 = In-terested, 3 = Somewhat interested, 4 = Not interested. It is best to have the current Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 for reading PDF (Portable Document Format) files. This is available FREE on the Adobe.com website. If you have an older ver-sion such as 6.0 let me know and I can send you another version of the form that should work. If you need any help please let me know. For those that do not have email and would like to participate in the survey contact me by phone and I can mail you the form. Further directions will be included in the email message. The goal is to present program topics that members would like to see. Thanks for your assistance. Our future meeting pro-grams will be based on the results of this survey’s answers and you’ll get what you ask for. Jim Martoza

RSVP 40th Anniversary Tour and Party

Last month’s Tappet Clatter carried an invitation for all members to join in the cele-bration of our Clubs 40th Anniversary. Part of the planning requires a count of peo-ple attending. The invitation letter requested you RSVP Jim Martoza by email or phone by early August. The committee sincerely hopes a large percentage of our members will make the effort to get to this celebration. The club is providing the meal and there will be other incentives. You don’t want to miss this Gala Affair. Forty years is a long time for a group like this to stick together. Jim Farris

Thanks!! “Lee and I have been working with Jim Martoza for quite a while now. I was thinking back to the first time we met Jim when we were needing a new TC editor. He was just new from California and volunteered to take on the Editor job. He proved to do a very fine job, from my observation. It would take volumes to mention all that I recall, but I do know that he has a deep love of our club and does many things for the betterment of it. Most of these are unknown to many of us. He seems tireless as he is always looking for new and better ways to do things for the club. So I want to thank him and let him know he is appreciated. Carol Folsom

MG and I had discussed the trip to the picnic and wondered if we could make it in the old ‘26 touring. MG mapped out a coarse that would get us there on the back roads except for a few blocks on Bothell Way. We decided we would give it a try realizing we might be stuck along the way with no way to get the car home again. So we left home with the Member-ship Roster and a cell phone in hand figuring we could possibly get help if we really broke down. Well, other than a lot of shaking and shimmying, there was no issue getting to the party and home again. This was a test in working our way up to making a 100 mile tour. The route was 19.11 miles each way. MG did say she felt like she just got off a plane when we got home. We arrived in our ‘26 touring just after Tom and Sharon Lauderback so we parked right next to them providing a great opportunity to compare their ‘25 touring with our ‘26. Others joined in this discussion. To top it off, Tom and Sharon invited MG and I for a ride in their car. It was like driving on a cloud compared to our ‘26. Very Nice!! Guess I have a lot of work to do yet. The picnic was very relaxed. After a great lunch and friendly conversation, Jim Lewis, a new member, played the guitar and sang songs. Jim was accompanied by Lee and Carol Folsom playing Ukuleles. Lee’s and Carol’s playing was a great surprise to some of us. Many others joined in singing old car tunes along with the many other songs Jim Lewis was so able to come up with. Attendees included Jerry and Mary Brownell, Matt Dickinson in his ‘36, Dave and Betty Roberts in the ‘41 coupe, Rod and Evie Schein in their ‘40 business coupe, MG and I in the ‘26 touring, Jim Lewis and Linda Wheeler in their ‘30 coupe, Dave and Diane Haddock in their ‘51 convertible, Dave Folsom, Lee and Carol Folsom, Marty Folsom, and Lee and Carol's daughter, Sharon. Bill and Ann Damm came at the end of the day. It was great to see so many members cars. In all there were 27 people at the picnic. The Folsoms have a great place with the field, walking paths, and the beautiful picnic shelter that provided cover from the sun with a cool breeze through the trees on such a hot day. The Folsom’s are such gracious hosts. Thank you for having us.

Puget Sound News bits Dave and Diane Haddock were in NYC last month for the graduation of their daughter, Alison from Cornell University Medical School. The ceremonies were at Carnegie Hall, so the joke now should go "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?.... Study, study , study!!" So their daughter can now be called Dr. Alison Haddock. She has just started her four-year resi-dency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center, in Ann Arbor. Bill Barker was towed by Jim Seiber on The Cloverleaf Tour to get the ‘31 started in Thorp. On that Tour a farmer volun-teered and took a participants ‘28 back to Yakima on his trailer. Fran Olson and Lynn Boltz compared Do’s and Don’ts re-garding getting in and out of their husbands ‘31 and ‘32 Coupes at the Northwest Meet. Dick Jones showed up at the Agricultural Museum on his Gull Wing Honda to say hello. He was on his way to Boise to work on his Model A. Don Boltz shined Dick Olson’s ‘31 tires with his miracle tire stuff in the parking lot of the motel at the NW Meet. He also shined Jim Farris’ roadster. It was so glossy people at the Four Cylinder Tour in Montana asked if it had been recently painted. Bob Helgeson was first on the scene at a spectacular trailer fire adjacent to the motel. His pictures were used on TV that evening. Bob Stamnes rode with Jim Farris on the Cloverleaf Tour. Bob Helgeson showed his ‘64 Corvette at The Mill Creek Show. There were 125 of them on display. Gerri & Dennis Johnson in their ‘32, Rod McCarthy in his ‘52, & Jim Farris in his ‘32 went to Harrison Hot Springs with the Seattle HCCA in July. Gerri Johnson’s daughter Theresa called her while in Can-ada to let her know the ‘runt’ bald eagle had fallen from its nest on their property in Poulsbo.

Tulsarama and the ‘57 Plymouth By George & Ana Maria Haley

I was working at Boeing in Wichita, KS, 50 years ago when I heard about a 1957 Plymouth Belve-dere (Miss Belvedere) that was going to be buried for 50 years in the Tulsa Court House lawn. I thought at that time “If I’m still around I would like to be there for the unearthing and unveiling of Miss Belvedere”. The golden moment finally came. We were there on June 15, 2007 to witness one of the most exciting moments of the car’s history. Tulsa hotels were fully booked for the event. Our hotel was only 3 blocks from the “gravesite”. At 12:30 PM sharp, Miss Belvedere was lifted from the bunker completely covered with original wrap-pings. The cover looked very rusty and dirty. Things didn’t look too good. The time capsule bur-ied with her was also lifted from the vault and appeared to be in the same condition. The ’57 Ply-mouth and the time capsule were loaded onto a truck and transported to the nearby Convention Cen-ter where she was going to be unveiled to the public at 7 PM.

We found out that a day earlier, when they removed the cover from the vault, that she was sitting in water half way up the doors and there were water level marks on the walls of the vault that indicated she has been completely submerged. That brought tears to our eyes. That evening we stood in line with our tick-ets at the Convention Center full of curiosity and excitement. The crowd was unbeliev-able, there were reportedly more than 7,000 people from 6 different countries to witness the unveiling. Finally, the big moment arrived and when the covering was rolled back, it was a sad

looking site. She was all in one piece but very rusty and dirty to the point there was no paint or chrome visible. They managed to open the hood and uncover the engine, which was what appeared to be a “ball of rust”. The trunk was also opened and all the artifacts were pretty much destroyed. The artifacts were 12 cans of beer, a jug of gasoline, which was intact, and several other items. The doors would not open but the windows were forced open, which re-vealed a completely destroyed interior. Finally, the time capsule was cut open with a power saw and the contents were in perfect condition. Some of the contents were: a 48- star American Flag, a $100 Savings bond, and the entry ballots where people had guessed what the population of Tulsa would be in 2007. “We had the golden chance and the golden ticket to see Miss Belvedere. She is still beautiful with a great personality. It was our golden day.”

VCCA NORTHWEST CLOVERLEAF TOUR Yakima Washington---June 20, 2007

This was the 6th Annual Northwest VCCA early car tour. They started as Four Cylinder events whose goal was to provide incentive for members to bring and drive their pre ’29 vehicles at the Northwest Meets. Successfully meeting that objective early, Chevrolets made of wood were added to the event, effectively providing a Chevrolet tour for cars made before 1937. Because most of these tours are scheduled one day before the Northwest Meet, at the same venue, interest materi-alized in providing room for any VCCA vehicle attending. At the Bellingham 2005 NW Meet the tour was set up allowing 1938 to 1980 vehicles the opportunity to travel the same route as the early group. This is what was done in Yakima in 2007. Because there are some Corvettes on the event we really had a Wood / Iron / Plastic Tour. A model T friend with a ’50 Chevrolet suggested the title (Cloverleaf) we used for the Tour. There were two groups on tour. The Plastic/Iron element left the Motel first and traveled the same route

as the Wood group only separated by a few minutes. Bob Helgeson in his Red ’64 Corvette lead this group. The leader for the second group was Jim Farris in his ’22 490 Roadster. The Tour was limited to Chevrolet cars or trucks at least 25 years old. The route tour took the two groups North to Ellensburg through the Yakima River canyon. This road was the main access road to the Yakima Valley prior to the development of I-82. It is a much quitter and pictur-

esque road today with a 45 MPH limit. In the Ellensburg area we visited The Olmstead Pioneer Park, A Chevrolet Collection of VCCA member Paul Addleman (the former Ellensburg Chevrolet dealer) and ate lunch at The Red Horse Drive In. The trip back to Yakima took us through downtown Thorp where Passports were stamped and then back south, down the River Road. Thirty-five cars par-ticipated in the event, fourteen from the Puget Sound Region. The morn-ing weather was perfect for touring along the river in the canyon. Paul Addleman’s home was an inviting stop for the group and the Red Horse Drive In treated the group royally. In all it covered 108 miles. Jim Farris, Dick Olson, and Bob Helgeson, all members of the Puget Sound Re-gion, planned and carried out the day for the old cars. Jim Farris

Vapor Lock, Gas, & Oil By Al Howe

Safety Corner

Some times we do, - But not every day, Drive through a field,- Of grass and hay.

Don’t stop too long,- In just one spot,

Just in case, - Your muffler is hot.

In grass that’s tall,- Brown and dryer, There is a chance,- It could catch fire!

DRIVE SAFELY THIS SUMMER

Vapor Lock has been a common problem this summer during hot weather. Cars stop run-ning and won’t start until the gas line is cool enough to let the hot air lock dissipate. This occurs when gas lines are too close to heat sources such as exhaust manifolds, pipes or mufflers. There are a number of ways to shield gas lines from heat sources. Rerouting, covering with a reflecting substance, or placing a baffle between the line and source. You may know of other ways to combat this problem to share with us. While on the subject of gas, a couple of cars at the Northwest Meet needed fuel pump help. Filters were put in them to solve the problem. Talk to Olson or Barker about this. Oil has been in the news the past year. It seems the zinc in it has been removed. The oil is great for roller cam engines in modern vehicles but our older engines with flat lifters may not be getting enough lubrication. The suggestion has been to use diesel engine oil 15-40. It is suppose to have more lubrication qualities. There is a lot of confusion about this issue. It’s been hard to decipher fact from fiction. You may have some real information from an accurate source to share on the subject.
