President's Report

Last season saw lots of racers and quite a lot ofrecreational sailors getting into wide-style boardsand bigger sails. There were plenty of goodseabreezes in the south that allowed wave-sailorsto regularly sail goats and clifton. Slalom andfreeride sailors also benefited with the onslaughtof sou-easters, with great conditions regularly atCremourne and also off Sandy Bay and kites tookoff, literally, in a big way. Getting down to WT business, the AnnualGeneral Meeting was held at Stanley on Saturday10th March 2001. A summary by the President ofWT's activities over the past 12 months wasfollowed by a Treasurer's report, and officebearers were elected.

It was unanimously decided that the new FormulaWindsurfing (FW) concept would replace thecurrent Formula 42 regulations for racing.However, when the wind allowed, a change toslalom boards would be permitted. The venuesfor FW in 2001-2002 will be Swansea, PortSorell, Sandy Bay and Stanley.

Membership was up last year, with 42 members,while the mailing list has been fairly static at

around 80. Membership will remain at $20 for2001-2002, despite the included third partyinsurance premium increasing from $8 to $12.

It was suggested that WT puts up its hand to hosta back-to-back National Wavesailing andFormula Windsurfing title in January 2003. Thissuggestion will be followed up with the relevantorganisations through the Australian WindsurfingAssociation (AWA).

It was also suggested and agreed by all present atthe AGM, including a number of kitesurfers, thatkitesurfing should fall within the umbrella of WT.However, in line with the other states, the thirdparty insurance will not cover kitesurfers.

About the AWA

For those of you who have heard about the AWA,but aren’t quite sure who ‘they’ are, thenhopefully this will make it a bit clearer.

The Australian Windsurfing Association (AWA)is the peak National body that coordinates mostof the National events, organises the third partyinsurance that’s provided to members, manages aNational website and sail registry, and generallypromotes the sport at a state, national andinternational level.

Recently, all state AWA representatives took partin a phone conference and the topics fordiscussion were as follows:

implementable objectives for the near andmedium term” and the question posed was: Whatinitiatives should the AWA take on board asitems to be actioned?

The phone conference lasted two and a half hoursand was extremely constructive in identifying thestrengths and weaknesses of the AWA as itcurrently stands and there will be furtherdiscussion focussing on these issues.

What’s the Formula?

Just a few years ago, well, even last year in a lotof places, anyone pulling a state-of-the-art“formula” board out of their van would likelyhave been laughed off the beach by other sailors.Most windsurf enthusiasts just couldn’t considerthat something looking more like a door couldpossibly be a performance board, after all, short,wide designs were done away with years ago andeveryone knew that thin was fast….

Fast Forward: December, 2000 Pattaya Beach,Thailand. Barely a whitecap in sight, yet planingin winds from only 7 knots, 140 of the World’s

best racers fly over the tropical waters in pursuitof the 2000 Formula Windsurfing WorldChampionship.What makes this possible? The rapid evolutionof new early planing boards, sails and fins hasrekindled interest and opportunity in windsurfingaround the World. Countries previously onlyable to dream of regular planing conditions nowhave large fleets of Formula sailors, whoregularly compete in conditions that only a fewyears ago meant longboards or nothing.

The ability to plane in less than optimalconditions has attracted many others to the sport,and the advent of Formula has resulted in anunprecedented regrowth of windsurfing as a sportand pastime in many countries throughoutEurope, Asia and the Americas.

Formula Windsurfing evolved from olderversions of Formula 42 class racing, where racerswere required to use only a pre-selected 4 sailsand 2 boards (4-2) to compete in racing, therebyattempting to limit the “gear wars” trend that hadrapidly grown to afflict slalom and course racers.

Today’s Formula is an even simpler concept: 1production board together with 3 sails / 3 fins arenominated by each rider for each contest and,within the wind range of 7 to 35 knots, courseraces are conducted around upwind/downwindcourses to test riders and equipment to theirlimits.

The challenge for single board performance overa very wide wind range immediately pushedboard (and sail) development for this equipmentinto overdrive, with obvious and practical spin-offs for the sport at all levels. The advent andimmediate success of short/wide beginner/intermediate boards (such as the Starboard Startand GO) are excellent examples of this trend.

Where does Australia stand in Formula at themoment? Notably, two top internationals (PhilMcGain and Steve Allen) have competed withgreat success in recent international events; ex-pat McGain coming very close to winning the2000 Worlds at Pattaya last December. Otherscompeting in the class internationally includeWA’s Robbie Radis, NSW’s Mike Nelson (2nd

2001 Asian Windsurf Tour) and VIC’s Ian Fox.

At a National level, the inaugural AustralianFormula Windsurfing Championships will beheld January 6-10, 2002 at Elwood Sailing Clubin Melbourne as part of the 2002 InternationalSail Melbourne Regatta. The Elwood SailingClub will host 3 preliminary events, inconjunction with “intro to racing” clinics in the 3months prior to the event, aiming to rekindleracing interest through the FW concept.

NSW has an active fleet of FW racers, withsailors racing FW format in low- to mid-wind

conditions, and switching to slalom format whenthe wind is suitable. Many NSW riders areenthusiastic to attend both their own state seriesevents as well as the national titles.

With higher average wind in their summer raceseason, WA has a greater focus on slalom racingrather than FW, although WWA is catering for anFW class in most of the WA summer seriesclassics. QLD, SA and TAS all have riders whoare enthusiastic for the new FW concept, andwith an increase in equipment availability thisseason, the number of riders participating fromthese states will increase.

New generation boards, up to the design limit of1m wide are already on the market here inAustralia, with strong representation from currentmarket leader (& World Champions) Starboard,and challengers AHD, Drops and Seatrend.Other board manufacturers offering dedicated FWboards include Mistral and RRD. Probably thehottest FW sail right now is the Gaastra Nitro 2range, developed by Barry Spanier, with sizes to10.9m. Neil Pryde’s RS-1 sail range has also hadextensive development, and is a worthycompetitor – Pryde’s largest RS-1 is a massive12.2m! North and Sailworks also provide sails indedicated FW sizes and concept.

Mast and boom lengths for these sizes have seenmasts as long as 5.5m (550) and booms to 2.85m– longer even than the boards themselves. Greatemphasis is also placed on fins in FW, withaverage sizes being in the 60-70cm range, leadershere are Curtis, Deboichet and Tectonics.

Season 2001/2002 should be one of good andprogressive growth for the FW concept here inAustralia. Our uptake of the concept has beensomewhat slower than other countries, partly dueto the better wind conditions available here inAustralia than in Europe or Asia.

The practical benefits of both the equipment andthe class are evident. Formula is an exciting andmodern evolution of our sport.

East Coast meant for some grueling and at timesrisky contest conditions. By day 3 we had 20ktsfrom the south on a solid 6-10ft break situated onMain Beach. Wavesailing Titles 2002: The Wavesailing Titlesfor 2002 will be held in Merimbula. Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing has a group of about 10 keenparticipants in the state at the moment. Howeverit is growing in huge numbers around the worldand is the fastest growing extreme sport rightnow. This season will see many of you guysgetting into Kitesurfing with a large ground swellof interest not only from windsurfers but wakeboarders surfers and the general public.

There are no set rules imposed by Local Councilsas to where to enjoy this sport however if weeducate other water users about the potentialdangers of the sport then I feel we can coexistwith many other user groups. The AustralianKitesurfing Association www.aksa.com.au is thebest first stop, or call me Russell Dowd and I willget you the information to help you considerkitesurfing.

I will also be happy to introduce you tokitesurfing at or before the Swansea event (seecalendar) which I would encourage all existingkitesurfers to attend. I think this will be a realshowcase event to display how quickly we haveall managed to get into this exciting sport. Nodough, all the windsurfers with the “go for it”mentality will be keen to check it out. Ratherthan talk about brands types and how to do it

right now I would encourage you to give me acall if you have been considering kitesurfing orare still reading.

The Basics: Kitesurfing is the most fun I haveever had on a water craft. It’s simply got hugepotential. Kitesurfing is cheap to get into andextends your sailing time heaps, around $2000 to$3000 dollars. If this seams a lot to you, do notget into kitesurfing.

If you are considering buying 2nd hand equipmentI am more than happy for you to call me andbring it around and I will check it out for youfirst. I would recommend that if you cannotafford good equipment wait until you can as it’ssimply not worth the hassle of poor equipment.

Please get some instruction from someone whoyou feel confident with and who knows yourabilities. Please do not be afraid to ask thedumbest questions of your instructor, it couldsave your life and the lives of others around you.Ask the other Kitesurfers around you, we willhelp and are friendly. There’s probably going tobe a time when we will be grateful for your help,so start asking the questions.

Try to get a buddy to go kiting with you, learntheir ability level and encourage each other.Always keep an eye on your buddy if they look introuble, THEY ARE !!! and require your helpSO ACT NOW. This kind of attitude will ensureyou will have a relatively smooth transition intoKitesurfing.

If you are still keen, I think you have what ittakes to get into kitesurfing. Women of less than50 kg enjoy kitesurfing and its not strength, butskill orientated. The group of guys who got intokitesurfing with me have all found it easy and areprogressing quickly. This sport is every thingyou think it could be and more. If you think itlooks cool, just wait till you’re riding one of thesuckers. Man!! Its fun!!

Finally it’s my hope that kitesurfing in Tassiedevelops a real community sprit amongstparticipants and that we encourage each other toreach our goals in this sport.

Please consider trying kitesurfing but be mindfulof what you are dealing with and I am sure youwill become as addicted as I have. Hope to seeyou at the Swansea event. Come on sea breezesand see you in the water.

State results for 2000-2001

FLINDERS ISLAND WIND FESTIVALThe Flinders Island Wind Festival was held in thelast week of September 2000 with windsurfingevents held on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.SHQ sponsored the event, with Luke Meyersbringing over a large assortment of learnerequipment and racing gear. Ten Tasmanians flewacross for the event which was held at LadyBaron.

Friday was devoted to lessons, with a greatturnout of enthusiastic beginners hitting the waterin very windy conditions (lucky to have those 3

m sails). Saturday morning once again saw an

excellent turnout of beginners taking lessons (10kids and a couple of keen ladies) in windyconditions.

Racing followed that afternoon in gusty 10-30knot NW winds. Sailors rigged 4.5-6.7 m sailsand a figure of 8 course was set. Final placings inrace one were: Luke, Simon, Tom, Anthony,Dave, Rob Gordon and Peter News. Race twoplacings were: Dave, Anthony, Luke, Simon,Rob and Tom.

Conditions were even windier on Sunday and noraces were held. Instead sailors just blasted backand forth across the channel and enjoyed a goodsail.

Many thanks go to Sue Dart, coordinator of theFlinders Island Wind Festival, and SailboardHeadquarters for organising the windsurfingevents and ensuring all had a good time.

FORMULA 42 STATE TITLESThe state Formula 42 titles attracted 17competitors, with racing at Swansea, Port Sorell,Sandy Bay and Stanley. Seventeen races wereheld in winds ranging from zero to over 30 knots,providing sailors with extremely challengingconditions at times.

The first 6 races were held at Swansea in fantasticconditions. The wind was from the south andprovided a relatively calm area inshore, withquite large seas out in Oyster Bay. With windsranging from 10 to 18 knots, this providedextremely good upwind racing conditions. An‘M-shape’ course was set, with the upwind legout in the middle of the bay. The first two racessaw most people use their longboards in about10-12 knots of wind, but when Anthony Perkinsblitzed the field in the second race on his courseboard, a number of sailors did a quick switch,ditching their longboards. It became very evidentthat in the 10-18 knot winds that persisted, thecourse boards were completely outpacing thelongboards.

The Swansea venue was excellent. Sailors wereable to rig up all their gear on a grassy area nextto the beach and the scenery was fantastic, withthe Hazards at Coles Bay ever present in the backdrop.

The next set of races were held at Port Sorell.The wind was 15-18 knots from the NW and theweather was warm and sunny. A figure of 8

slalom course was set and 3 races were held onthe first day.

After racing, most sailors went blasting out at seafor an hour or two. Just when a group of us wereabout to start heading back, after sailing down thecoast, mishap occurred. Fenton Jones’s newcarbon boom snapped on one side. Fentonmanaged to get back up and sailing on the othertack to head home, but then the other armsnapped. Within 45 minutes, we had a rescueboat out to collect Fenton and his gear andeveryone got home safely. Despite Fenton’s badluck, it was a good example of how you must beprepared for emergencies like that. All sailorshad PFD’s and we had a rescue boat on the shore.

The next day brought warmer weather, but verylittle wind. After waiting for a few hours, a fewsailors rigged their biggest gear and mananged toget planing at times in the fickle 6-8 knot winds.Despite the lack of wind on the second day, itwas nice just to relax in the sun.

The third round of the Formula and Slalom titleswas held in Hobart. For the third year in a row,the conditions were not the best, despite havinghad consistent seabreezes nearly every day fortwo months prior to this weekend. Four raceswere held in NW winds that ranged from verylight to strong and gusty. Racing involved a mixof longboards and courseboards competingtogether and often finishing neck and neck in thefickle winds.

The final round of the state titles was held atStanley in the NW of the State. One upwind racewas held in the morning on the Saturday in lightNW winds, followed by three figure of 8 races inthe afternoon in SW winds. The wind wasconsistently 30 knots, with many sailors opting tosail their wave boards on the break near the rivermouth rather than race.

With the overall position still undecided betweenSteve Charles and Dave Morehead, it was a bigdecision for both regarding gear choice. Stevechanged down to a 6.2 while Dave remained withhis 8.3. The bigger sail wasn’t a hindrance withDave managing two firsts and a third.

In the end, Dave Morehead took out the overalltitle on a count back by only 4 points, stopping

Steve Charles from winning it three times in arow. Anthony Perkins finished in third place,which was an excellent effort using only courseand slalom gear. Ron Cook sailed consistently totake out the Masters division ahead of FentonJones and Bernt Genssen. Anthony Perkins alsotook out the Handicap division, followed by RobGordon and Fenton Jones.

SLALOM TITLESThe Slalom titles attracted 12 competitors andincluded seven races. These races were also partof the Formula 42 series, but were sailed withoutan upwind leg in winds above 15 knots. SteveCharles was pleased to take out the top positionahead of Anthony Perkins and Dave Morehead.

KA SAILS “DASH-FOR-CASH”The 2001 Dash-for-Cash attracted 27 competitorsfrom around the state. Winds were light tomoderate from the NE and the weather wasovercast.

A mark was set off Tranmere Point on the EasternShore of the Derwent River and sailors lined upoff Sandy Bay point to start. Sailors were linedup according to their equipment. Board volumemultiplied by sail size gave a number, and highestnumbers were downwind (i.e. 150 L x 8.0 m =1200; 100 L x 6.5 = 650).

TAS WAVESAILINGSHQ West Coast Wave Sailing Classic 2001 washeld from Jan 4th to 7th at Marrawah and was anoutstanding success for participants, spectatorsand the Circular Head Community. Twenty threecontestants and six extra non competingparticipants enjoyed some of Marrawah’s bestwave sailing conditions with a combination ofsunny, windy weather combined with the everreliable swell.

Four interstate competitor’s including Pro SailorWes Greene attended the competition whichprovided enormous interest to spectators andincentive to Tasmanian sailors by demonstratingthe elite level of the sport.

The attendance of Wes Greene was made possibleby a grant from the Circular Head Council.These participant’s combined with theiraccompanying friends and family provided anenormous boost to the circular Head Community.

This was clearly the best attended and mostsuccessful Classic held for the last 20 year’sresulting in a full camping ground and car park.The competition got under way immediately onThursday 4th at Green Point Beach in a fresh Nor’

Day 3 was sailed at Green Point Beach inmarginal, off- shore wind conditions and a 3 ftswell. Sailor prepared to attempt to sail theseconditions impressed the judges. These beingJulian Glover and Dave Morehead.

Day 4 started with light winds and competitorsattending an informative wave sailing instructionclinic with Wes Greene. As the clinic drew to aclose, the wind gradually strengthened, withsailors taking to the water for the final session ofthe competition in brilliant sunshine, fresheningwind and rising swell .

Stand out sailors on Day 4 were Steve Charles,Kaleb Smith, Dave Morehead and Ken Woolfordwith the interstate continuing their tight tusslewith Julian Glover emerging on top.

The overall results, based on consistency andpreparedness to sail all conditions were asfollows:

He had it all worked out. Although he wasonly relatively young, he planned to retire verysoon, travel around Australia with his wife Cathyfor a year and build a house at Hawley where hecould spend long hours hanging in the harness offone of his three boards on the waters at Hawley.

In memory of Ron, and with the permission of hiswife Cathy, members of WT have developed aPerpetual Masters Trophy to be known as the RonCook memorial trophy. As Ron dominated thisclass it is particularly appropriate that this trophybe in his name.

Although many of us will front for the start of theseason with a tinge of sadness, the PerpetualTrophy will be important to honour the memoryof Ron and his particular contribution to the sport– an emphasis on enjoyment, a desire to learn andimprove, windsurfing with friends and happytimes at all the events, both on and off the water.

John asked whatconstraints he had: “well it should haveWindsurfing Tasmania in full and should have awindsurfing or ocean feel to it with a Tassieflavour”. WT will be posting out a ‘second hand sailingand kitesurfing gear’ flyer in late October. Forthose interested in advertising any gear, it willcost $1 a line with a minimum cost of $5. Allcurrent members and new members will receivethe first 5 lines free of charge (a free ad!). So ifyou’re not a member, but would like to advertisesome gear, then pay $20 (or $15 for kitesurfers)and get your ad for free.

Last year WT had 42 members. The moresupport WT has, the more WT can promote thesport and organise racing events, newsletters andfunctions. The WT membership form is attachedto this newsletter. Benefits for windsurfersinclude:• 12 Months membership with WT and AWA affiliation;

• 24 hr National Third Party Liability Insurance;• Free application for WT/AWA registered Sail Numbers.Fee: $20 (Includes Insurance Premium)

This represents fantastic value. The collectivepremium provides up to $10 million third partycover against public/products liability. There is a$500 excess claim.

This scheme has great merit and puts the onus oncompetitors to have cover rather than thecompetition organisers (who would have to raisethe $5 000, or thereabouts, premium required tohave similar cover). Cover is 24 hrs a dayanywhere in the world (excluding the US, itsterritories and Canada). So it’s not just whencompeting in an event!

Membership cover is from June to July each year.Cover provides you insurance in the event thatyou injure someone, or their equipment. Makethe most of the third party insurance and becomea member now.

Members can also nominate to receive thenewsletter by email, by stating this on theirmembership form. If they would also like toreceive information that WT receives during theyear (i.e. mainland shop specials, updates ofcompetitions, flyers etc), just place a tick under‘send information electronically’. You will onlyreceive information sent to you by WT, not fromshops or any other source.
