This booklet introduces all our 37 member festivals from ten municipalites. Tampere Region is a unique hub of festivals in European scale. The events cover all genres of art and cultures - offering experiences to vast member of culture enthusiasts.

Tampere Region festivals gather over half a million visitors annually during the festival season that lasts all year round. Festivals bring together a tightly knit cultural tourism ensemble including accomodation, dining and shopping services. You will fi nd more information on what the festivals have to offer at the festivals websites as well as the ads in this brochures.

Musiikkia! Ruovesi Chamber Music Festival24–28 June 2015Ruovesi

Musiikkia! Ruovesi Chamber Music Festival celebrates its ten-year journey with concerts, directed by Okko Kamu. High-quality concert experiences are on offer in the churches of Ruovesi and Virrat, the stable-turned-concert hall of Pekkala Manor, as well as in Sointula in Ruovesi. The performers include both Finnish and international musicians, as well as the string chamber orchestra Wegelius kamarijouset. Among others, the programme offers music by the composers Sibelius and Nielsen, who are celebrating their anniversaries.www.musiikkiaruovesi.fi

Sääksmäki Soi! Classical Music Festival2–5 July 2015, 6–10 July 2016Valkeakoski

The festival, conducted by artistic director Jukka Iisakkila, hosts a multitude of high-quality classical music concerts given in the Sääksmäki Church, Voipaala Art Centre and Visavuori. In 2015, the theme of the festival is “Jean Sibelius and Carl Nielsen: the 150th anniversary”. The artists at the festival include top musicians, both Finnish and international such as clarinetist Olli Leppäniemi, winner of the Nielsen competition, Swedish star violinist Erik Heide and baritone Markus Nieminen.www.saaksmakisoi.fi

Sastamala Gregoriana – Early Music Festival18–25 July 2015Sastamala

Sastamala Gregoriana is a charming early music festival fi lling Sastamala held for the 20th time. Concerts offer the most festive tunes of Medieval, Baroque and Renaissance music. First-class musicians from Finland and abroad meet their audience in medieval stone churches in the cultural landscapes of Lake Rautavesi. Tammerkosken Sillalla26 June–4 July 2015Tampere

The nine-day city festival Tammerkosken Sillalla will be held in Tampere between late June and early July. The festival tent in the Central Square and clubs around the city center offer more than 30 events, most of which are free of charge. The programme features concerts for children and young people, events for seniors, performances by choirs and dance groups, popular music and rock evenings and entertaining sing-alongs.www.sillalla.net

Tammerfest15–18 July 2015Tampere

Tammerfest fi lls the streets, clubs, restaurants and numerous venues in Tampere in the middle of the most glorious summer. The four-day festival offers the highlights of Finnish music and the most interesting up-and-coming performers. Tammerfest can be heard both indoors and out. It will bring over 200 shows to clubs, the Central Square and the Ratina Stadium – with the festival atmosphere reaching the skies. Tammerfest – four days of fun and play.

POP AND ROCKTapsan Tahdit7–9 August 2015Nokia

The Finnish popular music festival Tapsan Tahdit is held in Nokia in August as a three-day event. The Iskelmä Finlandia popular music award, which has been awarded since 2001, is also part of the festival. The festival tent in Pirkkalaistori Square will host Finnish stars as well as local talent. In addition to the swinging evening programme, the festival also includes plenty of free daytime events.www.tapsantahdit.fi

Blockfest21–22 August 2015Tampere

The urban festival Blockfest has been sold out in advance every year. In a short period of time, it has grown into the largest hip hop event in the Nordic countries. The latest record of a total of 34,000 visitors, including the fringe events, was made in August 2014. Blockfest will once again attract the biggest names of all genres of rhythmical music in Finland as well as the foreign star performers in Tampere city centre in August 2015.www.blockfest.fi

Lost In Music14–17 October 2015Tampere

Lost In Music is an annual urban festival held in downtown Tampere, with over 100 artists performing for an audience of up to 15,000 in the central venues of Tampere. The festival showcases new and current music across genres ranging from pop to world music and from hip-hop to metal. Monsters of Pop is a club festival that has been organised since 2006. MOP features electronic music, indie pop, buzzing guitars and art music. The festival strives to be the fi rst to introduce Tampere audiences to the latest and most interesting indie groups. Over the years, several foreign performers have taken to the MOP stage; some of the most important ones include Alan Braxe (FRA), Martin Rev (US) and Familjen (SWE).www.monstersofpop.net

A week of guitar music in the Tampere Region! The 11th Tampere Guitar Festival offers vivid experiences both at festive concerts as well as the free OFFklubi events. The Tampere Region guitar tour brings music close to the listener – concerts will be arranged all around Tampere Region in addition to Tampere. Taking place in the unique milieu of UPM’s Tervasaari paper mill area and the Myllysaari museum in Valkeakoski, Workers’ Music Festival carries long traditions. The four-day event held in late July for the 44th time offers current hits, rhythms, politics and something for the entire family, not forgetting the jewels of working-class music. The festival brings the most captivating performers and productions of Finnish contemporary dance to town. The programme of the six-day annual festival held in the spring features powerful Finnish contemporary dance productions by both young talents and experienced choreographers, dance videos, audience discussions and club nights. Tampereen Flamenco Festival is the largest and oldest fl amenco festival in the Nordic countries. It is internationally acknowledged and highly regarded in the homeland of fl amenco, Spain. The event has also established its place outside the fl amenco world, as a vital part of the Finnish and Tampere cultural summer. Pispala Schottische Dance Mania explores feelings and offers the latest innovations in folk dance! Mania introduces the most interesting titbits of folk dance. Dance theatre professionals and amateur groups alike take the stage. Guest performers arrive from Finland and the other Nordic countries. In the discussions at Tanhujalostamo, people can air out their emotions and loosen up at jam sessions late into the night. Pispalan Schottische, the international folk dance and music event celebrating the jubilee of dance, is an exciting summer festival that fi lls up the streets and markets of Tampere. Tampere Film Festival4–8 March 2015, 9–13 March 2016Tampere

The oldest and grandest short-fi lm festival of Northern Europe was established in 1969, but still offers something new annually in Tampere. Both international and domestic competitions present the latest crème de la crème of short fi lms, and special programmes screen the highlights of all genres. Mänttä Art Festival14 June–31 August 2015Mänttä-Vilppula

Hospitality continues to be present in Mänttä in 2015. The Mänttä Art Festival have been held 19 times since 1993. The statistical average of artists with a foreign background during this time is 5.9 %. Annually, the percentage varies between zero and 24.

In 2015, the curators Kalle Hamm and Dzamil Kamanger turn the statistics upside down, and mainly invite artists with a foreign background working in Finland to the exhibition. www.mantankuvataideviikot.fi

Triennial of Pirkanmaa 12 September–15 October 2015Pirkanmaa

Pirkanmaan Triennaali is a showcase of contemporary art in the Tampere Region, held every three years. The 6th Pirkanmaan Triennaali will be organised in the autumn of 2015 with the theme “Make yourself at home”. The exhibitions and events are on display in Tampere at several art exhibition venues, urban spaces and in residential areas as well as several municipalities in Pirkanmaa. The curator for the event is Curator of Fine Arts Sirpa Joenniemi. VISUAL ARTSBacklight Photo FestivalFall 2017Tampere

Backlight is an international photography event established and organised by the Photographic Centre Nykyaika; it is held in Tampere every three years. The roots of the Backlight photography festival are in documentary photography, while it’s open to diverse forms of artistic and conceptual approaches. Backlight promotes international dialogue, focusing on revealing the hidden, veiled, lost and forgotten.www.backlight.fi

Annikin Runofestivaali, held in a lovely wooden-house milieu, has become one of most renowned poetry events in Finland. The festival’s focus is on poetry, although it has expanded to include prose, music and the visual arts. In addition to Finnish performers, the festival also features signifi cant foreign poets. The Annikki OFF, which has grown around the festival, sprawls all over Tampere. Tampere Kuplii is a fi ve-day comics event held in downtown Tampere full of good spirit, bringing together comic-makers and enthusiasts from around Finland. The festival features exhibitions, sales stands, comics zines, talk shows, a Cosplay competition and comics signings. Every year, Tampere Kuplii awards the Comic Finlandia prize to a distinguished domestic comic album. The festival is free of charge.

LITERATUREThe Days of Old Literature26–27 June 2015, 1–2 July 2016 Sastamala

This national, free-of-charge literature event draws nearly 15,000 visitors each year. The foundation of the event is second-hand book sales. New books and fresh literature news can be found in the booths of publishers and organisations. The programme also features seminars built around an annual theme, a book auction, exhibitions, a concert and children’s book events. Pentinkulma Literature Festival30 July–2 August 2015, 4 July–7 August 2016Urjala

This time, the theme of the national literature festival with a long tradition is “Strangers on their way”. Author interviews, panel discussions and expert statements focus on why the Finnish literature is of interest around the world. Chilifest Finland14–16 August 2015Tampere

Finland’s hottest festival Chilifest Finland is held annually in mid-August on Tampere Central Square. The main focus of the festival was originally on chili pepper and chili derivatives, but over the years, the themes of the event have expanded to feature cooking and other strong fl avours, such as garlic, barbecue and smoke, too. The World of Tango festival is an international cross-artistic urban event held in Tampere in September. The concerts present top-quality domestic and international artists. In addition to concerts, the festival also offers art exhibitions, dance courses, fi lm screenings, theatre, lectures, the Wine and Beer Fiesta, and more. REGIONAL ARTISTBy appointing a Regional Artist, Tampere Region Festivals wishes to showcase fresh art and culture from the Tampere Region and strengthen the region’s cultural identity

The appointed Regional Artist is a distinguished and charismatic artist. The appointment both serves as support for the artist’s career as well as raises awareness on the Tampere Region festival network. Regional Artist is selected annually from the genres represented by Tampere Region festivals.

Regional Artist is involved in developing the activities of Tampere Region Festivals by introducing an artistic viewpoint. The artist participates in building partnership networks and supports communication of Tampere Region Festivals by acting as fi gurehead and performing in the networks’ events.

Furthermore, the Regional Artist participates in composing and developing projects based on artistic functionalities that bolster the co-operation of the various actors in the Tampere region, especially in the ten municipalities in the membership network as well as acts as an cultural ambassador – taking art to areas, people and places lacking accessibility to such experiences.
