Gown Guide

The Dream DressGown Trends | By Ronda M. Parag

SSearching for the perfect wedding dress should be fun and special.Bring those closest to you that understand your style and vision. Thereare so many options, from classic to modern, that you may feel over-whelmed. When visiting local bridal boutiques, be open to try ongowns that might be out of your comfort zone. The expert staff canhelp guide you in the right direction. If you have your heart set on astrapless gown, don’t be afraid to try on one with sleeves. Each boutiquehas a variety of designers that will showcase a variety of fabrics andsilhouettes. Do a bit of homework, looking through magazines andonline, to discover different designers and trends that will fit your style.

While bridal gown trends don’t change drastically from year toyear, there are several noteworthy trends that local boutiques are seeing.Inspired by Kate Middleton, many of the designers are showingsleeves with accents of lace, sequins and beading for visual interest.“This season we know that straps are here to stay, and lots of designersare even creating gorgeous options with long sleeves,” says AshleyWest, Manager of The White Magnolia Bridal Collection. “I absolutelylove the classic feel of a lace gown with a long sleeve and thrilled thistrend has returned. My mother had a wedding gown like this, and Ithink it’s such a timeless look.”

Gowns embellished with feathers is another trend that will makea statement. Confident and bold in a fluttering dress will certainly turnheads and focus all the attention on the bride. Another trend is thereturn to deep v-necklines. “This is great for a bride who wants a classicfeel with some type of strap or sleeve, with just a hint of sexiness,”West says. Low backs with cutouts and lace overlays are also on trend.

Megan Bubalo stays on top of the trends to carry the latestdesigns in her bridal boutique, Malindy Elene. “This season, we areseeing a ton of overskirt and two-piece options for brides,” Bubalosays. “Overskirts are the perfect way to get two looks in one by addingthem to any fitted gown. Two-piece gowns are a great way for brides tobring a fashion forward trend down the aisle. We are seeing thesetrends more and more and bridal designers are loving it!”

Never out of fashion is the short, white dress. Whether for therehearsal dinner or a reception change, there is always room for aLWD (Little White Dress). From frilly and lacy to sleek and slimming,a LWD is always in style. Several designers for spring werealso showing fitted white tuxedo pant suits and flowing whitechiffon-topped jumpsuits.

When you fall in love with the dress (or pants) of your dreams, youwill feel it. Don’t agonize that there are other options out there.Embrace your feeling and commit to the dress, so you can beginplanning the other details of your big day. TBW

The “Great Daxby” Wedding at the Powel Crosley Estate.

Born out of the bride’s love for 1920s style, the wedding color scheme

was ivory, gold and black, with the flowers adding a soft, feminine touch in

shades of blush and champagne. Tiffany was truly a striking sight in her gold

sequin gown, accented with an array of gold and glam accessories, including

a fur stole. With her timeless beauty, she looked as if she stepped right out of

the Prohibition Era. Michael complimented Tiffany in a dapper, classic

black tuxedo. Each of the bridesmaids had their fashion individually selected

to fit into the Art Deco style. The bride encouraged the guests to embrace

the Roaring 20s, by accenting their attire in period fashion and accessories.

Décor and accents throughout the weddingincluded vintage pieces of furniture and accessories, including church pews, a wooden loveseat, dresser, etc. The first dance tookplace under the glow of a large chandelier, and the guests were treated to signature cocktails that included an Old Fashioned anda Bramble. A typical tiered wedding cake would not do for this wedding, a play on the 1920s speakeasy, the Daxby Sweet Easy wascreated, that featured a variety of desserts. To cap off the night, the bride & groom rode away from the wedding on vintage bicycles.
