Due to the poor economy, people have lost their jobs and homes, and the family pet often gets left behind. The shelter has, when possible, even bent the rules on our owner relinquish program when accepting animals, knowing the sadness and hardship people are going through in these difficult times. To be faced with euthanizing a beloved family dog or dropping it off at the pound where it will likely suffer a similar fate is unbearable for all of us pet lovers and owners. So this is where we appeal to you, our supporters. We need your help in placing some of these dogs featured on our front page. Spring 2011

Pet Project and the shelter find ourselves in a real dilemma. Sadly ourdog population in particular is higher than it’s ever been.

Do you know of a friend or a relative who might find room in their hearts for an older dog or one that needs to be in a home without kids or even other dogs? Maybe your household is ready to welcome another pet.

CASH is such a handsome, easy going fellow that needs so desperately to go home. You see he’s terrified by the bombing practices at Camp Pendleton and cowers in his run for the duration. Even though we try to bring him in the office when it’s really bad, that’s not always possible.

FRANK, our adorable Dachshund, appears nervous initially, but once you get to know him, he’ll steal your heart, and he’s great with other dogs.

LEXI is a black dog, which for some reason seems to be a mark against her and other black dogs, but she’s friendly, very energetic and would make a great jogging partner.

BUD is our big old couch potato, who likes nothing better than to cuddle up, although not with another canine companion.

DYLAN is always on the go with toy in mouth and eagerly awaiting his new home with you. Such a sweet fellow.

WILMA is a very strong girl requiring an experienced but loving owner.

PIGLET has been with us way too long and we can’t figure out why. She’s such a little love.

OLIVE, as sweet as she can be, would prefer to be an only dog.

ALI, what a sweet little girl. Why is she still here?

Helga Udvardy recently painted this wonderful picture of Mason that now hangs prominently in the Shelter lobby. Helga has volunteered in many capacities with PPF and the Shelter over the years, and as you can see, her talents are many.

Mason is a favorite of Helga’s and he is one of our longest residents. It is likely that he will live out his life at the Shelter, loved by all.

Loving bequest comes through for the cat room! By Paula Becker

We have the most exciting news to tell you. PPF has received a bequest from the estate of Jeanne Lockett for $100,000 for the Purr-fect Shelter Campaign. Jeanne adopted a cat from our shelter a number of years ago, and she and Mr. Cat developed a special relationship. Her successor trustee Lou Hagenbuch saw the article in the Sun Post about our pro-ject and decided the money would go towards that, knowing that Jeanne wanted to do something to show her love of cats and to honor Mr. Cat.

So are we done fund-raising? Heck, no. The money raised thus far, we hope, will cover the construction costs. But we’ll still need to furnish the kitty suites with appropriate, fun, and safe amenities. And where will we house our kitties while construction goes on? This is another expense we need to address. We will need to be sure rescues and adoptions continue.

We want our supporters to know that it’s not too late to participate in this amazing improvement to the shelter. The kitty kitchen and cat care island are available for naming sponsorships, as are commemorative tiles and kitty cottages. To find out more, call us at (949) 595-8899, email me at [email protected], or check out our Website www.ppfcatroom.org. Look for groundbreaking news this summer!

Rabbits are wonderful pets that can be a great addition to any family – due to a Hoarding situation in San Clemente we have rather a lot to choose from!

When Tripod came into Pacific Coast Vet Clinic in Talega a few months ago, he had an open fracture (bone exposed) and an infection. It was necessary to perform an amputation halfway at his knee joint. A plastic jewel, flat on one side with ridges on the other, was used as a prosthetic and placed on the underside of his shell to help him get around and prevent his shell from dragging on the ground. Tripod was adopted by Christina, a vet tech at the clinic, and here’s what she has to say about him:

Tripod loves coming to work with me and watching all the animals we get in at the clinic. He likes to poke his head through the kennel bars and look all around at all the excitement. At home, his favorite things to do are take warm baths and stare at his reflection in the mirror. I’m not sure if he is checking out his good looks or if he thinks his reflection is another turtle. He also loves playing in his “turtle oasis” we built him and dig-ging for insects and sunbathing. He loves to lay out and tan when it’s nice out. His favorite foods are bananas, earthworms and snails.

The animals at the Shelter thought they’d won the lot-tery when these 3rd graders showed up for a tour, bring-ing all sorts of good treats and supplies for the dogs, cats & rabbits – PPF thanks you for your kindness and generosity!

Kids Helping PPFMatthew, Katie and Allie Reuter walked into the shelter 3 days before Christ-mas and said they wanted to donate money they had saved for the shelter animals. They reached up to the coun-ter and set down an envelope with their savings. They exemplify the thoughtful-ness and caring that children can have for animals waiting at the shelter for their forever home. For the volunteers present when they walked into the shelter and made their announcement, it was a very heart warming event and reinforced the idea that the holidays are all about giving, not just getting. The Reuter children are to be admired for their generosity and caring.

This is Chance Filbeck. We adopted him from your shelter about 2 months ago. We took him to Salt Lake City for the holiday and heloved the snow. We just wanted you to know he is doing well. He is healthy and happy. Thank you for saving him for us. Russ and CarolFilbeck, San Diego, CA

Attached are a couple of picturesof Buddy and Daisy who we adopted on Nov. 13th. Thank you so much for pairing them up with us. They are adorable and sweet companions. They became a won-derful part of our family instantly.

Thank you, The Desmonds

and why we need your support. All of these animals had medical or long term care issues. Please help us to continue our rescue of animals like these.

We adopted the Snowshoe Siamese, Puck, from the San Clemente shelter in December and just wanted to let you know that he has adapted very well to our household and quickly took up the position as “ruler of the roost.” He is a wonderful addition to our family and we enjoy his playful-ness and affection. Here are some pictures of Puck in his new digs. Thank you for all that you do to help these animals. Kimberly Ridge ------- Quote from Paula Becker,Cat room Volunteer I can’t tell you how great this is to hear. Puck came to our shelter and was soon put in a condo. He ruled the condo. Many people came in to see him after seeing him on the Web; he’s very handsome. But as soon as they saw his personality, they would back off. He was just a little too dominant. I remember one guy hearing Puck hiss, and he was appalled! Imagine that, a cat hissing. So it’s terrific that Puck found a home where his dominance is appreciated rather than scorned.

These happy endings are what we all love to see. Casino was rescued from County at least a year ago now, a Dana Point dog that Chris at Paws Pet Resorts was kind enough to take under her wing. It took a while to find him just the right home. He was an active, bouncy but lovable teenager that needed space to run and a buddy to do that with. That’s when Michael & Maggie showed up at Paws and the rest, they say, is history. The picture speaks for itself. Casino was featured in our newsletter last year.

Pet Project thanks Tuffy (formerly a Shelter cat) and Nik of Casanova Italian Restaurant in Dana Point for a wonder-ful Champage Brunch fundraiser.

“Paws for Brunch” raised $3.100.00 on Sunday February 13th!

My husband and I wish to thank you for Miss Phoebe. She was a stray found in a park in San Clemente and you took her in until we were lucky enough to find her. If she could speak, I know she would thank you over and over and over again, since she is quite the talker. She is very happy and the “bell of the ball” here on her new ranch in Fallbrook. She overlooks the land, her vineyard and many groves, but is most happy spending time with her brother Louie, sisters, Claire de Lune, Abbie and now Matilda Mae Mutthound, lounging at the edge of the pond. I also wish to thank whoever loved her before we did. They did a fine job at training her and giving her a home. It is very painful to think of what they lost, yet I am overjoyed at having her in our home. Just know she will be loved forever and is spoiled beyond belief. Thanks again to the wonderful staff at San Clemente Animal Shelter, for the dedication and love you give to so many animals. Sincerely, Leslie & David Hunt, Proud parents of Phoebe

In October of 1997 my husband and I adopted a dog named Dudley from the San Clemente Animal Shelter. Today, we had to have him putdown after 13 wonderful years.

Dudley was a sweet, good boy ev-eryone loved and he loved everyone back. Our constant companion, he traveled to most of the states and got to pee on lots of trees from coast to coast. After adopting Dudley we moved to Idaho where he had many acres to run on, creeks to swim in, green pastures to lie down in and sleep in the warm sun. He was happy right to the end, was well loved and a big part of the family.

Thanks to the San Clemente AnimalShelter and all the volunteers at Pet Project Foundation, an aban-doned dog lived a good long life with people that loved him, and we got Dudley who enhanced our lives every day. There will never be another Dudley ... we will miss him very much.

Sincerely, Carol Weeks

In the fall of 2010 several nonprofit rescue groups traveled to Lancaster and rescued Doc and close to 100 other dogs from the cluttered com-pound of a suspected hoarder. Many were young dogs, puppies and predominately black, like Doc. When they were fed, it was mainly bread and tortillas, and due to the lack and quality of nutrition, there were a variety of health and developmental problems.

When we first met Doc, his rear legs were extremely weak. Because he was under socialized, he was very timid. Now in the loving care of foster mom Nancy, Doc has blossomed, though still wary of those he doesn’t know until he feels he can trust and you will not hurt him.

He will definitely be a special needs boy as his rear legs will never be strong enough to take him on long walks or enable him to chase a ball, but he’ll make up for it by giving you his unconditional love.

Doc is a Cattle dog/Shepherd mix weighing about 30lbs and approxi-mately one year old. He has recently been neutered, is up-to-date on his shots and ready to go to his forever home.

Due to your kind support, Doc was rescued under our Third Chance Program.

To arrange to visit with Doc and find out more about him, please leave a message on PPF’s voice mail (949) 595-8899.

Gifts of Love By Diane Leonard

Each year we send out a card for the holidays to our PPF members asking for donations to help the animals. Also enclosed is a paper ornament to decorate and send back to us for our lobby Christmas tree. Hopefully you received yours this year. In return for a donation you can have a card sent to a loved one acknowledging a gift made in “memory of” or in “honor of” a person or pet. It’s a great gift giving idea.

Not only do we receive much needed donations but we also use the paper ornaments decorated by the donors. These hand decorated ornaments come back to us with names or pic-tures of people or pets that touched theirs lives and how now with their donations it touches the lives of the animals in our care. To all that sup-ported this holiday effort, thank you so much for your support.
