January 3, 2021 3 St. Joseph Catholic Church

We started another year looking forward and expecting and praying for best things to happen. As we

move forward this year, God does have a lot of plans for us, too. Fixing our gaze on Him as the Magi

moved toward guided by the star to find the new born king and to adore him, let us too, surrender

ourselves with a new resolution in this New Year to do His will in our lives.

Ephiphany (Epiphaneia in Greek means appearance or manifestation) has been defined as the

manifestation of the divine nature of Jesus to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. The choice of

the Gospel text today for the feast of the Epiphany underscores the truth that Jesus is God’s

revelation to the whole world. The Magi in Matthew are guided not only by astrology but also by the

Scriptures. Revelation outside the Scriptures motivates them to obey the one God; yet, they do not

find their way to Jesus without the Scriptures. This means that God is the source of our light. It

teaches that openness and humility are necessary if we wish to read correctly the “signs of the times”.

The light has come, and we are invited to live in it. This feast challenges us today to be like the star

which guided Magi to the Christ child. It invites us to shine to others who have not yet en-

countered God in Christ that they will be motivated to come and encounter him who in his love,

continues to sustain the world.

The Magi are the highly respected religious leaders, representing non-Jewish religions. The Persian

Magi had a reputation for astrology. The homage they pay Jesus contrasts strikingly with the

indifference shown him by the people and the religious leaders of his own nation and by the hostility

displayed by Herod. St. Matthew in his Gospel clearly tells us that Jesus is the Messiah, rejected by the

Jews but accepted by the Gentiles, so that it is the new Christian community that is the true Israel,

heir to the promises made in the Old Testament.

The star at the birth of Jesus announces to the Magi the birth of the king of the Jews and then leads

them to his home. This star reminds us of the star announced in the prophecy of Balaam (Num

24:17). Here the star which comes out of Judah stands for a conquering Jewish king. Originally this

meant King David, but later the prophecy was applied to Messiah. It is telling us that Jesus is the

expected Messiah, the true ‘King of the Jews’.

St. Gregory Nazianzen has commented as follows: “Let us remain in adoration; and to him, who, in

order to save us, humbled himself to such a degree of poverty as to take our flesh, let us offer him

not only incense, gold and myrrh (the first as God, the second as King, and the third as one who

sought death for our sake), but also spiritual gifts, more sublime than those which can be seen with

the eyes”(Oratio,19).

The involvement of the wise men in the events at Bethlehem ends with yet another act of respectful

obedience and cooperation with God’s plans. Christians also should be receptive to the specific grace

and mission God has given them and should persevere in fulfilling this mission.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Thomas Theneth CMI

Joliet Diocese Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal

We are pleased that so many parishioners have already pledged a gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA).

Your support will allow us to Be Kind and Merciful as, together, we do God’s work here on earth.

Every gift brings us closer to our parish’s 2020 CMAA goal of $30,500. If we raise more than our goal, 70 percent of the amount

over goal will be returned to us for our needs. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish.

Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA and make your gift today. You can also return the pledge card you

received in the mail from the diocese, make a gift online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or text “Donate” to (815) 205-1949 from your

mobile phone.
