ROCHELLE – It’s OK to scream. That was just one tip Dorothy Morris received Sun-
day before jumping out of a plane over Rochelle at 14,000 feet.
Turns out the 91-year-old great-grandmother didn’t need it, anyway.
“I forgot to scream,” she said. “I was too busy look-ing around. I think I wanted to, but it was so thrilling I forgot.”
The Mount Morris resident described her jump short-ly after landing with her tandem skydiving instructor, Paul Piccolo.
Surrounded by nearly 50 family members and friends on a hot and humid afternoon, Morris jumped with Piccolo at the Chicagoland Skydiving Center in Rochelle.
‘It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Dorothy!’

The Review
She decided to try sky-diving after hearing her niece, Kathy Qualkinbush of DeKalb, talk about how much she enjoyed her “jumps.”
“She kept bringing it up and finally I said, ‘OK, I will arrange it,’” said Qualkin-bush, who has made hun-dreds of jumps. “Initially, I was surprised, but knowing her, it made sense. I mean, she’s on Facebook. … I’m sure she’ll put this on, too.”
This was not Morris’ first visit to the skydiving cen-ter. She had watched other skydivers jump while eat-ing at the Flight Deck Bar & Grill, next to the landing area.
“I just love watching them jump,” she said. “We’ve come over for the evening meals, so I’ve seen them over and over. I told Kathy I think I could do that.”
After signing the neces-sary forms, Morris made her way into a nearby room where she watched a video about her upcoming expe-rience.
One of the tips encour-aged screaming because “it actually helps” combat the anxiety. Another urged jumpers to let their jump-ing partner know if they felt nauseated, so the pro-
fessional could “take eva-sive action” and avoid any splash-back.
Asked whether she was afraid of heights, Morris smiled.
“Evidently not,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of encourage-ment and support from everyone who knew I was doing this. Most of them said they wouldn’t do it, but I told them they should do it when they are 91.
“I’ve got one younger brother, but then every-body’s younger than me. I’m excited and a little ner-vous, but I’m ready to go,” she said, bursting into a
hearty laugh. Her next step was head-
ing to the large hangar where she was fitted into her harness under the skill-ful direction of Piccolo. “You are doing great,” he said while going over jump details and answering questions from her extend-ed family.
Morris’ granddaughter, Emily Severson from Elgin, held a sign that said. “Fly-ing Granny.” Morris posed earlier with Emily and her daughter Lela Wissing (Emily’s mom) and Emily’s 2-month-old daughter, Bekka, for a four-genera-
tion photo.Dorothy and her niece,
Kathy, who rode along in the plane’s cockpit for support, were the first of a dozen or so people to board the plane that sported “Perfectly Good Airplane” on its side. Mor-ris waved to her family and friends from the airplane door.
As the plane climbed along with temperatures nearing the 90s, Morris’ younger brother and last remaining sibling, Frank Stomberg, 77, of Rockford, watched. He, too, was not surprised by his sister’s decision to try skydiving.
“She has a mind of her
own,” he said. “If our mother, Lela Mae, was here today, she’d say,
‘Wait for me.’ Dorothy is cut from the same cloth.”
Lela May lived to be 105, another family member pointed out.
Stomberg said his only real concern was whether his sister was going to try to top this when she turns 92 in January.
“She read about the buck-et list, and I don’t know if this is it or not,” he said. “If not, it scares me on what may be next. There were nine of us growing up, and now there’s only two left.”
Most of the skydivers rid-ing in the plane with Mor-
ris jumped at 9,000 feet. The plane then circled again and, at 14,000 feet, Michael Squires, a videog-rapher and instructor who was filming Morris’ feat, exited the plane closely fol-lowed by Morris and Picco-lo, a bright teal parachute trailing behind them.
Morris ’ “entourage” watched from the view-ing tent as their matriarch made soft spirals in the sunny blue sky. Carolyn and Doreen White, two of Dorothy’s Mount Mor-ris buddies, held a sign that read: “It’s a Bird. It’s a Plane. It’s Dorothy!”
Cheers could be heard as the pair landed.
“When I come in for a landing, I really show them how to do it,” Morris said while sitting in the grass.
“Now you know why the birds sing!” exclaimed another skydiver, who landed after Morris.
“It was ice cold and then suddenly warm,” Mor-ris said as she prepared to meet her entourage.
“I made it, Frank,” she said before giving her brother a big hug.
“What’s next, deep sea diving?” asked another friend.
“No, nothing with water,” Morris shot back.

At 91, not the oldest to skydiveDorothy Morris isn’t the oldest person to skydive at
Chicagoland Skydiving Center in Rochelle.Douglas Smith, CEO and president of the company,
said the center had a 99-year-old skydiver.“He started skydiving at 90 and wanted to jump
every year on his birthday, and he made it to 99,” Smith said. “He didn’t make 100 because he died – but not from skydiving.”
Smith said weekends are the busiest times for the center. “We have a hundred people today,” he said Sunday. “You really need reservations if you want to jump on a weekend.”
The skydiving season runs 7 days a week, April 1 to mid-November, and is always dependent on weather.
Jumpers can choose to skydive from three heights – 9,000 feet, 14,000 feet, and 18,000 feet. Tandem skydiving prices from 14,000 feet are around $200, with additional costs for photos and/or video.

DIXON – Avez-vous fa im? Wel l , there’s a brand new downtown restaurant with a French flair that can ease your hunger pangs, and it’s worth stepping around the rubble to get there.
Owner Linda Knoll’s 319 Bistro now is serving breakfast, lunch and din-ner at 319 W. First St.
The bistro offers French American cuisine – all kinds of hearty, home-made food, many items
with a French focus, she said Wednesday.
There’s also a full-ser-vice bar – or will be. Knoll hopes to have a liquor license in hand by this weekend, and if not, she will very soon thereafter, she said.
Knoll, a Harmon native who now lives in Dixon, opened her place Friday,
after completely remodel-ing the former Fung Ming building, inside and out.
“It’s beautiful, and homey,” she said. And “the crepes have been selling like hotcakes.”
In addition to patrons’ praise for the crepes – which include variet-ies such as fresh fruit, mushroom, baked apple,
chicken, and meat-lov-ers – several Facebook fans also have posted kudos for her French dip sandwich: two five-star reviews, in fact.
T h e d o w n t o w n streetscape work has been a bit of an inconvenience for the fledgling busi-ness – there’s no parking directly in front of the building at the moment – but the parking lot behind the Telegraph building at 113 S. Peoria, half a block south, is available for public parking until the work is done.
Stop in, grab a bite and wish Knoll and her crew bonne chance.

DIXON – Dixon’s waste-water treatment facility is one of seven municipal operations to be nomi-nated for a state award.
The Illinois Environ-mental Protection Agen-cy’s Division of Water Pol-lution Control nominated Dixon for Best Operated
Wastewater Treatment Works for Group 1, which includes any plant that handles more than 1 mil-lion gallons a day. The group includes 180 plants.
The Dixon plant aver-ages 3 million gallons a day, but was designed to handle up to 4.5 million, said Dan Mahan, super-intendent of the waste-
water treatment facility.“This is a testament to
the pride and dedica-tion that the Wastewa-ter Department – Tim Stover, Tim Love, Josh McNitt and I – have in our careers in the wastewater field,” he said in an email.
The winner will be announced in April, dur-ing the annual conference
of the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Con-trol Operators.
The organizat ion’s inspection teams will pick the winner after on-site reviews of each facil-ity.
In 2007, the Dixon plant was named Plant of the Year.

CLINTON, Iowa (MCT) – Mercy Medical Center initiated a lockdown pro-cedure Tuesday morning after an individual left with-out receiving treatment.
According to a news release, the Clinton Police Department responded at 3:49 a.m. to Mercy Medical Center North, in reference to an individual at the hos-pital saying he was having violent thoughts. The per-son left the hospital without receiving treatment.
Officers arriving at the scene began searching for the individual, eventually locating the person at 4:07 a.m. in the 1700 block of
Roosevelt Street. The indi-vidual was transported to Mercy for treatment.
However, officers were dispatched once again to Mercy at 9:29 a.m. because the individual left before treatment was completed. As a precau-tion, the hospital initiated a lockdown. Officers searching the area locat-ed the individual a short time later and transport-ed the individual back to Mercy for treatment.
The lockdown was lifted after hospital administration re-assessed the event.

MCT News ServiceWait a second. There’s something you can put in a kid’s lunchbox that involves fresh vegetables, sim-ple cooking techniques, and it’s trendy? Direct from the Middle East, hummus made with things besides chickpeas has suddenly become one of the hottest food trends around. In this lunchbox, carrot hummus “sushi” rolls, and hummus made with carrots, avo-cado and beets are paired with pita wedges.

Drop garlic into a food processor with the motor running to chop. Stop pro-cessor and add the drained chickpeas, lemon juice, tahi-ni, cayenne (if using) and 1/4 cup olive oil. Process until smooth. Taste and add salt and pepper if needed (the canned beans may be salty enough). Process again to combine.
Refrigerate in an airtight container up to a week. To serve as a dip, serve at room temperature topped with a little more olive oil and cayenne pepper.
Note: To use dried chick-peas, rinse 1 pound chick-peas and cover with cold water. Let stand 12 hours or overnight. Drain. Place in a cooking pot with enough water to cover. Add 1 tea-spoon salt. (Optional: Add 1 teaspoon baking soda, which will help to remove the skins for smoother hummus.) Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until tender, 1 to 2 hours. Drain and cool. out the bread as thin as you can. Spread each slice with 2 teaspoons hummus. Place 1 tablespoon carrot on one side.
Roll up tightly, then cut into short pieces, about 1 inch wide. Serve, or pack tightly into a lunchbox con-tainer.Yield: 16 to 24 pieces, or
about 2 to 3 servings.
From Catherine McCord on Weelicious.com. Avocados makes a silky smooth hummus. It won’t keep as long as other kinds of hummus, but if you cover the surface
with olive oil and refrig-erate it in an airtight container, it will keep a couple of days before it turns dark.
1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 medium ripe avoca-do, pitted and peeled
1 clove garlic, peeled2 tablespoons lemon
juice! teaspoon kosher
salt, or to taste" cup olive oil, plus
more for covering1 tablespoon tahiniPlace all the ingredients
in a food processor and puree until completely smooth. (Stop the pro-cessor and scrape down the sides if needed to get all the avocado pureed.) Scrape into an airtight container and cover with a little olive oil. Refriger-ate up to 2 days.
Yield: 4 servings.
