Turkey is steeped in history and almost every road you travel hassites and ruins whose names feature boldly in the histories of theRoman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The highest mountain peakin Turkey is Mount Ararat which, according to the Old Testament,was where Noah’s ark came to rest as the great flood subsided.

Turkish is the official and predominant language but most peoplewho work in the service and tourism sectors in the main resortsand cities speak English. The vast majority of Turks are Muslim bybirth but you will find that only a small number of people in thecities and resorts are fervent practitioners.

Accommodation andInfrastructureThe general standard of touristaccommodation in Turkey has improvedin recent years and is now generally on apar with similar accommodation inwestern Mediterranean destinations.However the public infrastructure such asroads and footpaths in many areas fallshort of what you would find in Ireland.Public utilities such as electricity supplycan also be erratic at times and someservices in your selected property suchas air conditioning and lifts may beaffected by low voltage or power cuts.Many, but not all, of the properties wefeature have their own back-upgenerators. Marble and ceramic tiling areused extensively both indoors andoutdoors for flooring and paving andbecome extremely slippery when wet soextreme caution is needed especiallyaround swimming pools.

Currency and ShoppingThe local currency is the Turkish Lira YTLand at the time of writing €1 isequivalent to 2.10 YTL. All major creditcards are widely accepted as are manydebit cards such as Laser. Turkey is ashopping paradise and best buys includebranded fashion wear, leather goods, gold,jewellery, rugs and spices.

Getting AroundIn all towns and resorts there is awonderful local minibus service called the“Dolmus”. They provide a frequent andcheap transport service from every areaof the resort to the centre and the mainbeaches and apart from its marvellousefficiency travelling on the Dolmus affordsan opportunity to mix with the localpeople as they go about their daily lives.For those who want to explore rural lifein Turkey there is also a Dolmus servicefrom the resorts to all outlying villages.Turkey also has an excellent intercity busservice which is relatively cheap and onthe longer journeys on board stewardsserve tea, coffee and other refreshments.There is also a very good domestic airservice with a number of low costoperators on most routes.

Turkish Food and Choiceof Restaurants Most resorts have a wide choice ofrestaurants and cafes offering anextensive selection of international dishesincluding European, Chinese, Mexican etc.The local Turkish cuisine is really excellentand is based around the best localproduce including beef, lamb, fish, freshvegetables, fruit, olive oil and a greatrange of different mouth watering breads.We recommend you try it at least once

The ancient city of Ephesus was visited and patronised byAlexander the Great in 334 BC because of its importance asthe Shrine of Artemis, the Greek Goddess of Moon andHunting. Over the following centuries it passed through varioushands, reaching its peak under the control of the Romans, whobuilt it up to become their Asian Capital. The Temple ofArtemis was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Thesilting of its harbour in the 3rd century spelled the end forEphesus and over time the city became completely coveredover until 1869 when it was discovered by a Britisharchaeologist. Even now the city is still being excavated andexperts say that 75 per cent of the city still remains buried. Theamphitheatre in Ephesus is one of the worlds biggest, whichheld up to 25,000 people. Other impressive sites at Ephesusinclude ‘The Latrines’, ‘The Temple of Hadrian’ and ‘The Houseof Love’.

Virgin Mary’s House

After the death of Christ, His Mother Mary came to live inTurkey close to Ephesus. Her house is in the mountains and sheremained there in prayer and solitude until her assumption intoheaven to join her son, Jesus Christ. Mary’s House is an officialand important Catholic shrine and has been visited by anumber of Popes including a visit by Pope Benedict XVI inNovember 2006. Mass is celebrated there every Sundaymorning.

Pamukkale

Pamukkale meaning ‘Cotton Castle’ was formed thousands ofyears ago when a calcium rich spring cascaded over the hillsideto form this brilliant white snowy chalky mountain and terraces.Visitors will also get a chance to swim in Cleopatra’s Pool andvisit the ancient city of Hierapolis.

Istanbul, Troy, Gallipoli and Bursa Tour

Weddings made Simple Our local wedding coordinators in Turkey look after all the legal andadministrative arrangements on your behalf. All the bride andgroom have to do is apply to the Department of Foreign Affairs inIreland* for letters of freedom and the wedding coordinators takecare of everything else. The couple only need to be in Turkey fourworking days before the wedding to complete the legal formalitieswhich means it is actually possible to get married while on a oneweek package.* Assuming both are Irish citizens. The Palmin Sunset Plaza HotelThe hotel is situated on an elevated site directly overlooking thesea with idyllic seascape views of the nearby Greek island of Samosand Dilek National Park and is a truly picturesque wedding venue.The hotel boasts two magnificent full sea view terraces both ofwhich are ideal for hosting a wedding ceremony and reception.The upper terrace tends to be more popular with smaller weddinggroups where wedding guests join with the other guests in thehotel for after dinner entertainment. There is a large indoor restaurant at this level which isavailable to the wedding party but most choose to dine and danceon the outside terrace where the lights from the sea and the starscombine to illuminate this romantic setting. Sea Pearl HotelThis hotel has a dedicated Wedding Garden and Restaurant whichhas hosted many Irish weddings over the years. It is a verypicturesque area and the civil ceremony is usually conducted in thegarden area with trees and other greenery as a background. Thereception is held in the open air garden restaurant with its marbledtiled floor and artificial water fall and lagoon to lend atmosphere.The Wedding Garden and Restaurant are reserved exclusively onwedding days. Smaller wedding groups may choose to have thereception in the pool side restaurant where they can join otherguests for after dinner entertainment. There is a children’splayground adjacent to the garden restaurant area where theyounger guests can amuse themselves while the adults are dancing.

Kusadasi is a shoppers paradise. Located in an importantcotton growing area many of the most famous fashionbrands in the world have factories in the locality and youcan get genuine fashion ware at greatly reduced prices.This in turn has spawned a hugh fake fashion industryand typical of Turkish honesty there is no attempt todeceive you as they proudly offer you “genuine fakes” atunbelievely cheap prices. Other good buys include goldand jewellery, leather goods and Turkish carpets.Themain market day for textiles and souvenirs is Wednesdayand we also recommend a visit to the weekly fruit andvegetable market on Friday just to experience theamazing colours and smells of the fresh fruit, vegetablesand spices being offered for sale directly by the growers.

Many of the best known attractions in Turkey arelocated close to Kusadasi including the ancient city ofEphesus and the temple of Artemis, the House of theVirgin Mary and St. John’s Basilica. The famous cottoncastles of Pamukkale and the Greek island of Samos areother popular day trips and there are daily boat tripsand an abundance of water sports.There are two verylarge water parks one of which claims to be the biggestin Europe. In addition to the many rides and slides thereis also a daily Dolphin and Seal show and a Sea Parkwhere visitors can swim with dolphins or tropical fish ordescend in a steel cage in the hugh shark tank. For theeven more adventurous Microlight tours are availableover Ephesus and Kusadasi port.

AccommodationModern, tastefully furnished threebedroom detached villas which sleep up to7 persons. Sleeping accommodationconsists of one double bedroom with ensuite shower room and toilet and two twinbedrooms. The master bedroom has agood sized balcony and one of the twinrooms also has a small balcony. All threerooms have individual air conditioning andbuilt in wardrobes. The main bathroom isat the same level as the bedrooms and hasa full bath with shower. A seventh personcan be accommodated on a fold awaycamp bed in the lounge. Cesme [pronounced chesh-may] is a popular holiday resort and spa centre. It is located80 Km west of Izmir city on the westernmost tip of the Cesme peninsula. The GreekIsland of Chios is less than 3 Km offshore. Cesme has a long and rich history havingbeen an important centre down through the ages under Ionian and Ottoman rule andthat Greek influence is still evident in the town today. There are many sulphurous

Cesme and Ilica.

thermal springs around Cesme with some of themspringing from the sea with source temperatures inexcess of 60° C as can be seen in the nearby beachresort of Ilica. The therapeutic and curative qualitiesof these springs have made Cesme a renowned spaand thalassotherapy centre. The town itself isdominated by Cesme Castle and the nearbycaravansary. The harbour is at the very centre of theresort where traditional fishing boats mingle withluxury yachts. There is a regular ferry service to thenearby Greek Island of Chios and the Italian ports ofBari and Brindisi. There are many bars andrestaurants around the resort centre and a couple oflarger night clubs on the outskirts.

There is no actual beach in Cesme town but thenearby satellite resort of Ilica [pronounced il-ig-a]more than compensates with its 3.5 Km long whitepowdered sand beach. The name Ilica means spa orhot spring and the best examples of the underseasulphurous hot springs which made Cesme famousare actually located in Ilica. Although much smaller

than Cesme, Ilica has developed as a resort in its ownright with a good choice of shops, bars andrestaurants. Some of the best hotels in the Cesmeregion are located in and around Ilica.

Ozdere and ClarosThe town of Ozdere is located less than 50 Km fromIzmir airport and 40 Km from Kusadasi in an areawhich is largely undeveloped and unspoilt. With abackdrop of rugged mountains and a coastline thatalternates between rocky, craggy cliffs and beautifulsheltered bays with sandy beaches Ozdere isgenerally favoured by holiday makers looking for aquieter more relaxed holiday. EUpassport holders can purchase an entry visa onarrival in Turkey at a cost of €15. Children who share an adult passport must travelwith named adult. The passport office suggests thatpassports should be valid for at least 6 months afteryour return. Children reaching 16 years of age musthave their own valid passport. The name on thepassport must match the name on the ticket. Sunwayholidays cannot accept any responsibility forincorrect travel documents.

CURRENCY The local currency is the Turkish Lira YTL and at thetime of writing €1 is equivalent to 2.10 YTL . Allmajor credit cards are widely accepted as are manydebit cards such as Laser.

Stomach upsets arefrequently caused due to over exposure to the sun,unusual food, cold drinks, alcohol and too muchfresh fruit (particularly orange juice) and otherfactors which our bodies are unaccustomed to. Thenearer you can adhere to your usual routine the lesschance you have of suffering from stomachcomplaints. Bring simple remedies from home tohelp you in the event of tummy and minordiscomforts. We advise passengers not to putimportant medicines in their checked in luggage. COMFORT AND SAFETY Experiencing a different way of life is part of theenjoyment and intrigue of travelling abroad. MEALS In general where breakfast is included it is Turkishstyle continental breakfast. VACATING ROOMS On the day of departure most hotels require you tovacate your accommodation mid morning or noon sothat it may be prepared for the arriving guests. Someof these hotels do provide courtesy rooms.

TRIPLE / QUAD / SINGLE ROOMSSome accommodations have twin or double roomsthat can facilitate an extra bed or beds, it should benoted that these beds are either convertible sofa bedsor camp beds. Space will be limited in most cases.Single rooms are limited, may be inferior in qualityand may not have balconies and can be smaller thantwin rooms. BAGGAGE It is your responsibility to ensure that all yourbelongings are recovered from the airport on yourarrival and placed on the correct transfer coach ortaxi and also to ensure the same from your hotel onyour return journey home. Unfortunately due to the nature of airtransport, a passenger's luggage may not beultimately delivered. It is important that youunderstand that airlines limit the level ofcompensation, which they will pay you in suchcircumstances; equally Sunway's Travel insurancepolicy contains limits in relation to lost luggage.Clients should bear these limits in mind whenpacking their luggage and should make enquirieswith their home insurers where they believe the valueof their luggage would exceed such limits.We strongly recommend that all money, jewelleryand other valuables be carried with you at all timesand, subject to airport security regulations, you carrya supply of any essential medicines sufficient foryour journey and until you have time to getreplacement supplies in the event of your luggagebeing delayed or lost.

PERSONAL SAFETY Be careful when out and about, watch your handbag,wallet and camera, do not carry passports or morecash than you think you may need. We urge you touse the safe deposit boxes in your hotel/apartmentfor all valuables. Use caution as you would at home.Make sure that you have adequate insurance coverand are familiar with the procedures required.

TICKETS AND TIMINGSTickets are issued approximately 14 days beforedeparture. Please thoroughly check tickets as flighttimings are subject to change. Check in time is 2hours before departure. If you miss your flight as a

result of your late arrival we will do our utmost tooffer you an alternative way of getting to your resort,but all costs incurred will be your responsibility. If weare unable to offer you alternative flights, fullcancellation charges will apply. Please check thatyour passport and/or papers are in order for travel.Seat only passengers must reconfirm their returnflight 48 hours prior to departure. If you choose tobook within 2 weeks of departure a charge is leviedto deliver your tickets to the Airport.

ACCOMMODATION AND RESORTSWe have done our utmost to be accurate in ouraccommodation and resort descriptions but due tomaintenance, refurbishment, low season, badweather, public holidays and religious festivals,sometimes facilities and entertainment may betemporarily withdrawn without notice. Information onpublic holidays and religious festivals are availablefrom the relevant embassy.

HOTEL CLASSIFICATION IN TURKEYThere are two separate systems of hotel and touristicaccommodation licensing in Turkey. One isadministered by the Ministry of Tourism and is basedon the internationally recognised star system. Theother is administered by the Local Authorities andsimply grants a licence without any rating. Howevereven the Ministry star rating system can not bedirectly compared with those of other countries aseach country applies different criteria. Where aproperty has a ministry of Tourism classification wehave included this for information.

SUNWAY HOLIDAYS OWN ACCOMODATIONRATINGSFor your general information and guidance we haveincluded our own Sun ratings on all properties.These are based on our own knowledge andexperience of the individual properties and onfeedback from our clients and reflect a combinationof accommodation quality, facilities, standard ofservice, atmosphere etc. An individual rating mightnot be considered objective if looked at only in thecontext of one particular aspect and we wouldtherefore invite all prospective customers to read ourproperty and resort descriptions carefully and tocontact us prior to booking if they have any particularquestions or requirements.

OUR CHOICE ACCOMMODATION‘Our choice’ holiday options are ideal for clients whowant the best deal and are flexible. We choose youraccommodation for you and will confirm the gradingand resort on your invoice. Your accommodationmay or may not be featured in our brochure. Uponarrival you will be met by one of out airportrepresentatives who will confirm you holiday details.You will be provided with the usual resort services.If you have particular requirements or a clear idea ofwhere you want to stay we recommend that youchoose one of our names accommodations. If youare happy to leave the choice to us, then this is the ideal holiday for you.

HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONIt is significant to remember that the description ofhotel rooms in this brochure applies to standard twinbedded rooms unless you specifically reserve analternative room type at the time of booking and thisis confirmed on your invoice. The allocation of roomsis at the sole discretion of the hotel. Requests forspecific rooms or positions within the hotel cannotbe guaranteed unless they are subject to an extrasupplement. Priority for the grant of special requests

is generally allocated by the hotels by reference tothe date of booking so early bookers have a betterchance of being facilitated. However, no request canbe guaranteed.

HOTEL FACILITIES Where air conditioning is provided it may either beindividually controlled [you have full control ofoperating times and temperatures in your ownroom/apartment] or centrally controlled [the hoteldecides when it operates for all rooms and thetemperature settings]. Electricity power cuts andperiods of low voltage are not uncommon in Turkeyand certain services such as lifts and air conditioningmay not operate during these periods. Even when ahotel has its own generator which provides normalpower for most items please note air conditioningsystems do not generally work without mainselectricity It must also be noted that some hotel facilities may,at certain times not function fully. This may be due tomany reasons e.g. a pool being emptied or cleaned.These decisions are part of normal hotel running andare at the discretion of the hotel management. If,however, we are made aware of any closure or of anyother alterations to the hotel description, we will passthis on to you as soon as we can. In some hotels TVsmay not receive English channels. Please noteminimum numbers may be required to operatecertain clubs or organised events and entertainmentprogrammes may be curtailed during periods of lowoccupancy.

NOISE/BUILDING WORKNeither the hotel or apartments used, nor Sunwayholidays can accept responsibility for anythingoutside the accommodation's grounds.

TIPPING Tipping is expected in bars and restaurants.

ALCOHOLMost people like to indulge on their holidays howeveryou should not drink alcohol before swimming and itshould be avoided during sunbathing, since it causesdehydration. Never drink if hiring a car, Mopeds,Motorbikes or Jet Skis. Drunken behaviour inaccommodation and on board aircraft can result inyou being asked to leave the accommodation or theaircraft accordingly. In such cases our contract withyou will cease and we will have no further

SUNWAY HOLIDAYS INSURANCEWe insist that our clients are adequately insuredbefore travelling. We have therefore arrangedcomprehensive travel insurance with Viasure TravelInsurance. It is very important that you areadequately insured. If you are not taking outinsurance with Sunway Holidays, you must show usthat you have taken out appropriate holiday insuranceor sign the disclaimer on your booking form. Thisinformation must be passed to your travel agent sothe details can be added to your booking. A policydocument will be sent with your booking invoice ifyour booking is made with one of our sales agentsover the phone. If your booking is made online youwill be able to download your policy by clicking onthe link shown on your einvoice on your eticket or byvisiting www.sunway.ie Please note that it is theresponsibility of each client to ensure that theyreceive an Insurance Policy from us, and acquaintthemselves with the terms and conditions containedtherein. Annual Insurance policies may also bepurchased.

COOLING OFF PERIOD Our insurance cover allows a 14-day cooling offperiod. This affords you an opportunity to peruse thepolicy purchased, should you believe that you have ajustifiable reason for cancelling the cover provided byus we will provide you with a refund of the amountpaid.

HEALTHCHECK If you have availed of Sunway Holidays Insuranceyou will note that it contains conditions that relate toyour health and the health of others who might notbe travelling with you but whose well being your tripmay depend on. In particular it may not covermedical problems which you or they had before thecover started. However by declaring these conditionsto Viasure Health check screening telephone number(091 560 627) your insurance may be extended tofully cover you. If you have any doubts about thecover provided by Viasure or would like moreinformation please contact Viasure Insurance on 01639 6000.If you do not have Sunway insurance, please checkyour policy carefully.

INFANTS A set charge of €39 is levied for infants and on theaircraft and transfer coach they must sit on an adultslap. To qualify as an infant your child must be under2 years old on the day you are due to return fromholiday. Some hotels charge for cots.

OUR CHILDREN

The safety of our children is considered paramount.Parents should check that they are happy withoperated clubs, playgrounds and facilities providedby the accommodation of residence. Alwaysfamiliarise yourself with the pool areas and depths.Most pools and beaches in Turkey have no lifeguardson duty and in general beaches do not have any ormeaningful flag systems. Our child sharing pricesare based on children that have not reached their16th birthday in apartments (unless otherwise stated)and 12th birthday in hotels before the date ofdeparture. To qualify as an infant your child must beunder 2 years old on the day of return.

PREGNANCY If you are more than 28 weeks pregnant at the timeof your return flight, most airlines may insist on amedical certificate stating you are fit to fly and manyairlines do not accept passengers who are more than32 weeks pregnant in any circumstances.

OTHER INFORMATION Licensed as a Tour Operator by the Minister ofTourism and Transport. Licence No. T.O. 101. In theevent of legislation by any government to imposeVAT duty or any taxes whatsoever which have theeffect of increasing holiday costs, we will regretfullyhave to pass these on to our customers. CHARTER FLIGHTS Some flights may touch down at different airports onthe inbound and/or outbound flight. This issometimes at the discretion of the Airline / Captainand we may not necessarily have been notifiedbeforehand. Please call for details. All passengers onour charter flights must comply with the followingconditions: a) Each passenger shall ensure that he isin normal health, capable of undertaking the flightcontemplated and is in possession of all documents,etc. enabling him to comply with all formalities,regulations etc. whatsoever and whosoever both inrespect of himself and his baggage and isresponsible for all dues and charges in thisconnection. b) Each passenger shall ensure that theirbaggage does not contain anything of a hazardousnature or of a nature prohibited by any country orstate involved and that animals of any kind do notaccompany them. It should be noted that all charterflight timings are subject to alteration and maychange prior to your departure. The final timings

shall be confirmed upon receipt of your tickets. Flightdelays are the responsibility of the airline and subjectto their conditions of carriage. Please note that alltimes are based on the 24-hour clock system.

FLIGHT ONLY PASSENGERSFlight only passengers should reconfirm their flightswith our resort representatives 24hrs beforedeparture.

DATA PROTECTION The organiser is committed to protecting yourprivacy and information. A copy of our privacy policyis available on request from Marina House, ClarenceStreet, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The informationthat we use is for the purpose of fulfilling ourcontract as an organiser. Information that youprovide us will be held on Sunway Holidays systems(and in other ways) for use by us for the followingpurposes:

(a) Booking information; (b) information about you(and your travelling party) may be passed ontoholiday providers and others and may include thingssuch as age, religious beliefs, dietary requirements,your (and your travelling party) physical or mentalhealth. This information may also be transferredabroad; (c) If you apply for insurance, we mayprocess information (including medical information)about you (and your travelling party) and pass it onto insurers; (d) Information supplied by you may beprocessed for statistical analysis and or marketresearch and may in certain instances be disclosed toour agents for the purposes of fraud prevention and/or debt collection.(e) To contact you via e-mail, letter or phone withdetails of Sunway Holidays, or selected suppliersproducts and services including financial services,which may be of interest to you. By entering into acontract with us you agree to the use and disclosureof information by Sunway Holidays as described. Acopy of your personal information can be providedon request.You have the right to have any inaccurate personalinformation rectified or erased. Please note thatairlines are required by laws introduced in the UnitedStates and other countries to give border controlagencies access to passenger data. Accordingly anyinformation we hold about you and your travelarrangements may be disclosed to the customs andimmigration authorities of any country in youritinerary.
