Dear Friends at St. Louise, All of us have been impacted in one way or another by the current pandemic, and many of us have been impacted financially. We have had two drive-in food giveaways in our St. Louise parking lot – you may have noticed the announcement in the bulletin a few weeks ago. It was heartwarming to see the volunteers in action, and also heart breaking to see so many people in need. Our parish has also seen a significant drop in our Sunday collections. Our Parish Administrator, Jonathan Taasan, and I are keeping a close eye on the finances and we are making adjustments along the way. One of those adjustments has been to postpone the painting of the interior of the church, which we had hoped to do this year as a part of our 60th anniversary celebration. You might recall that we had hoped to be able to cover the estimated $100K cost of the paint job with the rebate from our Annual Catholic Appeal collection. Unfortunately, the rebate was smaller than our hoped-for amount. The Pastoral Council considered either approaching a small group of parishioners for a quiet fundraiser or asking all parishioners to do what they could to cover the cost. However, the Council was concerned that this doesn’t seem like a great time to ask people for money for painting when so many are in need of urgent necessities. Another suggestion was that there might be someone in the parish who has a painting company and might be willing to donate the labor. This option raises questions of accountability (the project is not simple, but we would want to minimize the time that the church would be out of commission) and liability (the job would require the use of lifts, making it more dangerous than most painting jobs). In the end, the Pastoral Council recommended to me that we wait until after the pandemic to paint the interior of our church. I imagine that a number of you are putting off projects at home that you might have otherwise done. The painting of the interior of the church is a rather minor project in comparison with all the needs of our parish and school physical plant that we will one day need to address. I am very grateful for all of you who are contributing to our parish. Thanks to you, we are in much better financial shape than many of the parishes in the Archdiocese. At the same time, as we postpone addressing the needs of our buildings, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind all of us that those realities are not a “wish list” – they are decisions that we need to make about failing buildings. We are also aware that there are many factors that have shifted and continue to shift in our parish; and so our parish needs as envisioned in the master plan when the School and Faith Formation Center were built – already over a decade ago– are not the same as we envision now. For this reason, we will be calling together a new building committee to discuss present and expected future needs and what is realistically possible as we move forward.

Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

The Catholic Survey

To gather insights from the faithful, the Seattle Archdiocese launched CatholicSurvey2020.com. It’s a comprehensive survey for current and former Catholics. It asks about our archdiocese’s strengths, weaknesses and potential priorities for the new pastoral plan, and about a respondent’s own faith history and personal beliefs. Responding should take about 30 minutes.

Since the survey opened the archdiocese has received more than 6,400 completed responses. If you haven’t yet responded, please do so. If you have responded yourself, please encourage others you know to complete it. The archdiocese especially hopes to hear from middle-aged to younger-adult Catholics and from those who were once Catholic but no longer consider themselves to be so.

The survey will remain open throughout 2020 and is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean: English: CatholicSurvey2020.com Spanish: https://survey.cmix.com/0D2AEABF/G10DF6LT/es-US Vietnamese: https://survey.cmix.com/0D2AEABF/G10DF6LT/vi-US Korean: https://survey.cmix.com/0D2AEABF/G10DF6LT/ko-US

St. Louise School News

St. Louise School Is Opening Pre-K for In-Person Schooling We are excited to announce that our Pre-Kindergarten program for 4 year olds is able to open up this September for in-person schooling! We have limited spots remaining before we fill up our Pre-K roster, so if you are interested in having your preschooler come to St. Louise daily for our morning session (8:15-11:45AM) or our extended day session (8:15AM-3PM), please call the School Office at 425-746-4220 or email school secretary Tracy Brown at [email protected]. Also at this time we are accepting applications and securing admissions for new students in selected grade levels in K-8. (Some grade levels have waiting lists.) For those grade levels, the school year begins in September online, but we hope to bring back the students for in-person schooling as soon as the Governor and the Archbishop give us the go-ahead. In the meantime, the online-learning program we have set up at St. Louise for K-8 students is robust and engaging. We would love to welcome new families to receive the benefits of a Catholic school education! Giving your child a Catholic school education is a fundamental way to assure he/she will receive a solid foundation not just in academics, but in morals and faith formation. Graduates of St. Louise Parish School leave us with a strong foundation and go on to do extremely well in high school, in college, and in life. More information on our outstanding parish school may be found at stlouiseschool.org.

Stewardship • La Corresponsabilidad

Called to Serve as Christ As of June 4, we had heard from 616 families and for those that were able to make a finan-cial commitment, they raised a total of $1.6 million. We have reached 71% of our $2.3 million goal! We are so grateful for the gen-erous support and sacrifices many families

have made to be part of this important campaign for our priests, women religious and our faith community – thank you! Overall, for the entire Archdiocese of Seattle, the total amount raised for the campaign so far is $53 million by 17,540 house-holds. The total campaign goal is $100 million. This Fall 71 parishes are lined up for the final and largest wave of the cam-paign. Just a reminder that whatever is our parish total amount paid, St. Louise gets 15% as our parish share, which will go towards our Building Fund. When we reach our goal, that’s a potential of $351K that will help seed our next building pro-ject. If you haven’t had the chance to respond, please visit www.stlouise.org/calledtoserve to learn more about the campaign and to submit your commitment. Thank you.

Annual Catholic Appeal

We are most grateful to everyone who has had the chance to respond and raise a total of $129,000 so far — that’s 40% of our $295,000 Annual Catholic Appeal goal – thank you! Out of our 2,000-plus households, we’ve heard from 256 fami-lies. This is great! If each of the remaining 1,700-plus families made a one-time gift of $100, we would meet and exceed our goal. However, not everyone might be able to make a pledge, so if you’re able to, kindly consider increasing your gift. Re-member, equal sacrifice, not equal gifts. Every amount makes a difference. Please consider making a pledge online by visit-ing our website at www.stlouise.org and clicking on the Annual Catholic Appeal button. Thank you for your generous re-sponse.
