SUNDAY REFLECTION The word of the day is rejoice! We hear it mul- ple mes in the readings for this weekend, which is referred to as “Gaudete Sunday.” We rejoice be- cause the Lord is near! Spend some me this week reflecng on the Re- sponsorial Psalm (Lk 1:46- 54). Here we have the Magnificat…Mary’s hymn of praise. In this passage, you can see Mary’s Fiat… not only is she willingly cooperang with God’s plan, but she is rejoicing in her complete surrender. She is not grieving her loss of self; rather she has found her true identy. We are called into a similar discipleship. Our hearts should be filled with gra- tude and praise. We should rejoice in our Sav- ior, who looks upon His lowly servants with deep and merciful love. Perhaps it is cliché, but an “atude of gratude” will cause us to give of ourselves in new and generous ways! Catholic Diocese of Wichita

Christmas Gifts for Father Matt Many of you have been very generous to me (Fr Matt) on past Christmases. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and

generosity. Receiving a personal gift from you means a lot. Even more, I am grateful for the notes you have sent me about how my ministry has touched your life and helped you in your faith journey. This year I would ask you to consid-er something different.

First, let me be clear, I am not asking for anything. I do not expect any gifts. However, I know many of you will WANT to give me something or insist on it. This year, would you consider a gift to the Rectory, the parish house in which I live, instead of directly to me? We are working to update it. We have some funds set aside for the project, but we could use a more financial assistance to get us across the finish line. We have a couple more restrooms (with mold) to renovate, and I would like to pay for new furniture in the basement. If you would like to make a donation to this cause, simply write “Rectory” on the envelope or check and we will make sure it is designated. Make the check paya-ble to Church of the Holy Spirit. Your gifts will be recorded as donations and be tax deductible, but will be separate from your regular tithe. A gift to the renovation of the rectory will benefit our parish and your priests for years to come.

Second, please consider being generous to others during this time of the year. Many of you know people who may have lost a job, or are worried about it, due to Covid. Please consider being generous to them directly, or, alternative-ly, making a gift to our Saint Vincent DePaul Society who helps out people in our area who are in need. The Church teaches a principle of “subsidiarity.” This principle challenges us to take care of our needs on the most local level possi-ble. It can be tempting to turn to large organizations or the government for assistance first (and there are certainly times when we can or should), but we need to first ask ourselves if we are helping the person right in front of us. The people we know, work with, have regular contact with, or our neighbors.

Lastly, would you consider writing a note to one fellow parishioner who has touched your life this year? We need to encourage one another as we make this journey together. Often, we do not know how we may have touched anoth-er person’s life. Is there a Lector who proclamation of scripture has moved you? Is there a fellow Knight, Altar Society, or Small group member who has said something that helped you? If so, would you let them know?

Blessings Friends! Fr Matt

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — As a garden makes its growth spring up, so will God make justice spring up before all the nations (Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11).

Psalm—My soul rejoices in my God (Luke 1:46-50, 53-54).

Second Reading —Do not quench the Spirit. Do not des-pise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24).

In the renewal of the liturgy that followed the Second Vatican Council, the full, conscious, and active partici-pation of the assembly was the primary consideration. By participation, the Council Fathers did not mean just joining in the singing and the spoken responses, but active engagement and prayerful understanding of the rites. They envisioned a transparent liturgy, a worship that spoke so directly to the hearts and minds of the faithful that it would require no explanation at all. The liturgy itself is the best possible catechesis on the litur-gy. What does the liturgy teach us? It shows us the ministry of Jesus continuing in the present. He gathers a community. He calls us to prayer and repentance and praise. He teaches us with the very word of God. He does not send us away empty, but sets before us a marvelous banquet, feeding us with his very body and blood. Then he sends us forth to do what he has done—to give ourselves for others, not just in words, but in deeds. The Mass is the pattern of our Christian lives. – Corinna Laughlin

CHRISTMAS BREAK EXTENSION The Diocesan Catholic Schools Office has an-nounced an extension of Christmas break. While we will still break for Christmas at noon on Tues-day, December 22, students will not return to school until Tuesday, January 12. This is one week later than our original return date of Tuesday, January 5. This extension will not impact the re-mainder of the second semester.

This delayed start will provide a buffer of time from the Christmas holiday as we attempt to miti-gate the spread of COVID-19. Additionally, it will allow for a much-needed and much-deserved rest for our teachers and staff.

Know that each decision we make, whether as a school or as a diocese, is meant to keep our stu-dents and staff safe and healthy. Thank you for your patience and cooperation with this very strange year!

God bless, Mrs. Bright

Mary: the New Eve Family of Faith Formation (December

2020 Vol. 1) At creation, Adam and Eve were filled with sanctifying grace. Because of Eve’s disobedience, humanity lost its sanctifying grace. Mary’s obedience to God’s will brings sanctifying grace back to the world. Her obedience is what Eve’s should have looked like.

This image is called Mary Consoles Eve. As you study this image, consider why Eve might need consolation.

FIAT! This is the Theme for our Steward-ship Renewal. Will you say YES as Mary and Joseph did?
