By the end of this course, all students will have acquired further knowledge and/or skill in the following aspects of a singing ensemble:

~ Training one’s voice in the art of blending with the rest of a choir.~ Hearing other voice parts while singing.~ Proper care and support of the voice through wellness practices and singing technique.~ Reading and navigating musical notation of a choral nature.~ Sight singing familiar and unfamiliar music.~ Understanding a piece of music’s origins, composer, and genre.~ Following a conductor.~ Understanding, preparing, and respecting the rules of a rehearsal process.~ Performance in concert.

MATERIALS:

~ Music Binder, to be borrowed from Choral Room. Must be kept in Choral Room~ College or wide ruled paper for brief note taking. (25 sheets of paper)~ Pencils and excellent erasers (ex. MagicRub erasers)~ Music (Staff) paper, to be provided by instructor~ Journal of your choice, any style, for Collins prompts, to be left in Choral Room~ A Gmail-email address, and DropBox Account for digital online communication (no Facebook)

All students must bring all materials to class. As a rule, Mr. Dietzler does not allow students his permission to return to lockers for forgotten items.

PRACTICING:

~ There will be performance based evaluations. The importance of practicing cannot be overemphasized. The voice uses muscle memory to perform in music, in both tonal placement as well as breath control in the diaphragm and intercostal muscles. The only way to build this muscle memory is through daily practice and repetition. Again: The only way to learn this muscle memory is through daily practice.

RESEARCH, CLASSWORK, AND HOMEWORK:All students are expected to complete assignments neatly, accurately, and on time. Failure to do so will result

in a significantly lower grade, regardless of performance skill.

PATIENCE:Singing requires practice and patience. Knowledge and skills will not appear overnight. Progress will occur

through disciplined practice, patience, and an open mind. Frustration is a natural instinct in learning to sing. One of the greatest benefits of learning a musical skill is in mastering not only a song, but also in developing the self control and discipline to build musical skill.

REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES:Students in Chorus have the opportunity to perform. These performances will account for a majority of the

final grade per semester, and will be viewed as midterm and final exams. These performances include the Winter Concert and Spring Concert, as well as other events, including graduation. Proper attire will be discussed in class for these events. Any student violating proper attire will not be allowed to perform, and this will result in a significantly lowered grade.

PERFORMANCE as ASSESSMENTThe very core of this course is the evaluation and participation of students in

PERFORMANCE, ONSTAGE. There can be no exception made. Every effort will be made to counsel students out of performance anxiety (indeed, that is the main goal of this course), but a student cannot “refuse” to participate, or will receive a failing grade in the course automatically.

DRAMA CLUBIT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT MEMBERS OF THIS COURSE AUDITION

FOR THE WINTER PLAY and/or THE SPRING MUSICAL, or help on stage crew! These experiences are direct, hands on, and the best way to experience theater as an art, outside of the classroom!

PIANO - 0744COURSE SYLLABUS

All Students are expected to respect their agreement with the Teacher when they sign the Student Teacher Contract.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course, all students will have acquired knowledge and/or skill in the following aspects of the keyboard instrument:

~ Identification, playing, writing, and understanding of the keyboard keys and layout, ! ! through terminology, locations, order, and practice.

~ Understanding of, and playing from, written notation for the keyboard, including ! ! treble and bass clefs individually, and then together as they appear in standard piano ! ! repertoire.

~ Proper position, poise, dexterity, and control in the fingers, hands, and arms. Posture for ! ! the pianist will be reviewed as well.

~ Playing individual hands alone, right and left, as well as both hands together.~ The building and playing of Major scales including C, G, F, D, B flat, A, E flat, etc. as far as

! ! time will allow. The building of minor keys will be analyzed as well. The whole tone and ! ! chromatic scale will be studied.

~ The building of simple major and minor triads. ~ Basic accompaniment technique and styles.~ The parts of the keyboard, how sound is produced, tuning, and the history of the

! ! keyboarding instruments.~Famous keyboard players and composers.~ Electronic MIDI interfaces and recording on the computer.~ Improvisation on the keyboard.

RESEARCH, CLASSWORK, AND HOMEWORK:All students are expected to complete assignments neatly, accurately, and on time.

Failure to do so will result in a significantly lower grade, regardless of piano performance skill.

FIELD EXPERIENCEAll students must attend TWO music concerts, one per semester, ideally featuring

the piano. One must be classical in nature. A ticket stub, program, and Collins 4-5 review and critique of the performance must be completed for EACH. This will be your midterm exam grade, and final exam grade. Students can choose where and when.

SSR and COLLINS WRITINGIt is the expectation of Penn Delco School District that all students participate in SSR

(Sustained SIlent Reading) and Collins Writing activities across the curriculum. All students in this course will participate. Please have a book for SSR, which will be every FRIDAY in our course.

EQUIPMENT:The pianos and computers are sensitive instruments, and therefore are to be treated

gently and correctly. Any damage done to equipment as a result of blatant negligence on the part of the student will result in disciplinary action and financial compensation to SVHS for the repair or replacement of the equipment.

PATIENCE:Playing an instrument requires practice and patience. Knowledge and skills will not

appear overnight. Progress will occur through disciplined practice, patience, and an open mind. Frustration is a natural instinct in learning a musical instrument. One of the greatest benefits of learning a musical instrument is in mastering not only a song or chord, but also in developing the self control and discipline to build musical skill.

ADVANCED:Students with experience beyond the instruction of this course will be given special

assignment with advanced expectations in performance and written theory. These students will also aid their peers, as well as perform duets with teacher and fellow students.

~ Defining music through sharing opinions on and favorite types of music.~ Identifying different quadrants of music such as culture, music as a language, ! expression of feelings, cross curricular connections, etc.~ Identifying and describing different aspects of music, including: Pitch, Rhythm,

! ! Timbre, Tempo (or Beat), Dynamics, Expression, Theme, and Message/Story. ~ Basic theory skills.~ Basic composition and arranging, through the computer.~ Basic study of the timbre of instruments and ensembles.~ Study of composers within music history.~ The role of the soundtrack within a film.~ American Musical Theater.

MATERIALS:

All Students are expected to respect their agreement with the Teacher when they sign the Student Teacher Contract.

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this course, all students will have acquired knowledge and/or skill in the following aspects of creating digital music:

~Proficiency in the Apple Mac OS X operating system. (Apple is the standard for music production) ~Proficiency in becoming a cross-platform user (PC and Apple).~Understanding how MIDI works in the creation of music. Composing works in MIDI format, and also studying

! ! previously professionally composed MIDI works.~Understanding in the different uses of digital music, such as film, video game, television, etc.~Basic study of the timbre and abilities of each musical instrument. Basic study of the instrument families:

! ! Percussion, String, Brass, Woodwind, Electric, Vocal, etc.~Basic study of the keyboard as an instrument, both as a piano and using pitch bend and pedal.~Proficiency in choosing proper instrumentations and styles for specific artistic needs ~Proficiency in time management, efficiency, and planning through creating an entire project

! ! ! composed of multiple tracks recorded to CD. ~Proficiency in music and recording applications, specifically iTunes, GarageBand, Finale, Audacity, iMovie,

! ! Pages, and iDVD. ~Understanding of compression of a musical recording, specifically MP3, AIFF, WAV formats.~ Ability to arrange loops to accompany original compositions, and build sound effects ~Basic recording studies - Microphone types, setups, Stereo vs. Surround, etc. ~Proficiency in podcasting and use of iPod, building of a blog or wiki using audio mixing techniques

INDEPENDENT WORK:

~ There will be considerable independent work. The importance of efficient time planning cannot be overemphasized. Professionals in the recording field have limited times to produce their works, and must organize their time and efforts accordingly.

Students will have time in class to work on projects. Students also may work during study halls, or after school (until 3 PM). Access to a computer, (preferably an Apple) and piano or keyboard at home would be ideal.

RESEARCH, CLASSWORK, AND HOMEWORK:All students are expected to complete assignments neatly, accurately, and on time. Failure to do so will

result in a significantly lower grade, regardless of piano performance skill.

FIELD EXPERIENCE - MIDTERM EXAM and FINAL EXAMAll students must attend TWO music concerts, one per semester. One must be classical in

nature. A ticket stub, program, and Collins 4-5 review and critique of the performance must be completed for EACH. This will be your midterm exam grade, and final exam grade. Students can choose where and when.

SSR and COLLINS WRITINGIt is the expectation of Penn Delco School District that all students participate in SSR

(Sustained SIlent Reading) and Collins Writing activities across the curriculum. All students in this course will participate. Please have a book for SSR, which will be every FRIDAY in our course.

EQUIPMENT:The computers, pianos, keyboards, headphones, etc are fragile equipment, and therefore are to be

PATIENCE:Composing or arranging any piece of music requires practice and patience. Knowledge and skills will

not appear overnight. Progress will occur through disciplined practice, patience, and an open mind. Frustration is a natural instinct in learning new skills. One of the greatest benefits of studying music is in not only in composing worthwhile pieces, but also in developing the self control and discipline to be productive, and build musical skill.

ADVANCED:Students with experience beyond the instruction of this course will be given special assignment with

advanced expectations in composition, project depth, and number of projects. Students taking this course “again” will learn to navigate the program Logic Pro.
