March Calendar
Dear Parents,
Read across America will be celebrated on March 17 when the
Penn Delco Education Association and Penn Delco School District
host Dr. Seuss Night at Sun Valley High School. The evening will be
filled with engaging activities for children of all ages. Please see
the district Facebook page for more information.
Last month, Parkside Elementary students enjoyed an engaging
science assembly presented by Science Explorers. The assembly
titled, Crazy Chemistry, focused on exothermic and endothermic
chemical reactions. The students were very intrigued by the
presenter’s experiments. The Science Explorers Program is
currently offered at Parkside Elementary. Please contact the
school office or visit the school web page for more information.
This month all third, fourth and fifth grade students will
participate in the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment.
The reading and math assessments for third, fourth and fifth
grade students will begin the week of March 24 followed by the
fifth grade writing assessment beginning March 31. Next month
the fourth grade students will participate in the science
assessment. For more information regarding testing dates please
see the schedules posted on the school web page.
Parkside Elementary students and staff participated in two
successful charitable efforts last month. Our students collected
approximately $3,700.00 in jump a thon donations to benefit the
American Heart Association. They also succeeded in collecting
contributions for the American Cancer Society during the annual
lolligram sale hosted by the second grade class. Thank you for
your continued support.
Best,

Lolligram Lessons Second grade students hosted the annual Valentine Lolligram Fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Parkside Elementary students had the opportunity to purchase heartwarming Valentine messages for family and friends.
The Lolligram sales took place at school during lunches and were distributed to classrooms on Valentine’s Day. This was
a great lesson in economy for second grade students who had the opportunity to experience real world skills such as
selling lolligrams, counting money, counting and distributing the lolligrams, and assisting younger students with writing
messages.
Thank you to all participants and the second grade class for their hard work on
this project. Also, thank you to Mrs. Clark-Contrady for organizing this event.
Jump for Heart
Parkside Elementary students participated in the third annual Jump-a-thon for the American Heart Association.
Throughout the day, students and staff took part in a variety of activities to get their hearts pumping; they also
learned about the benefits of heart health. This year Parkside students raised approximately $3,700.00 for the
American Heart Association.
Thank you to all who participated and to our parent volunteers who assisted throughout the day.
Also, thank you to Mr. John Clark for organizing this event.
100th Day Celebration Teachers in grades K-2 collaborated to develop a 100th day celebration for their students. Each classroom hosted a
special 100th day, curriculum-based activity in either math or language arts; students were highly engaged as they
rotated classrooms to participate in activities with various teachers. Students had fun dressing up and completing
100th day projects which were displayed during the celebration. This was a fun day of learning at Parkside.
Thank you to the teachers who organized this event: Mr. Bushnell,
Mrs. Irving, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. McHugh, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Polites
.
As part of an ongoing positive behavior support
program, Core Essential traits are introduced to students
each month at Parkside Elementary during school-wide
classroom meetings. The purpose of this and other PBS
programs at Parkside is to ensure a positive school
climate for all students. The students listed below were
selected by Peter for exhibiting the Core Essential trait
of courtesy throughout the previous month. Thank you
to our guidance counselor, Ms. Talbot, for work on this
and other PBS projects at Parkside Elementary.

The Reading Counts program is a tool used to support independent reading at Parkside Elementary that allows
students to self-select books of interest on their independent reading level and monitor progress. The amount of
independent reading a child does has a direct correlation to vocabulary growth, reading comprehension, verbal
fluency, content knowledge and higher levels of achievement. Independent reading happens daily at school and
is assigned nightly. Reinforcement of reading at home will help to increase your child’s achievement levels.

READING COUNTS AT PARKSIDE ELEMENTARY!
Spotlight on the Curriculum
By Anne Dudley Secondary Curriculum Supervisor
1:1 Launch at Sun Valley is a Success
“1:1 has given our students the competitive edge they need to go from good to great.”
-Sun Valley Principal, Pete Donaghy
It’s been just over a month since our 1:1 (One to One) laptop initiative at Sun Valley High School began. Students in grades 9 through 11 have been using their laptops in class and at home since the January 27th launch. Before the students received their laptops, parent meetings were held to provide information and to answer questions about the initiative. Each department has a teacher designated as a Technology Integrator whose job it is to be available to assist teachers with implementation of the laptops into their curriculum. In addition, a group of SVHS students have been trained to provide Help Desk services for students who have any technical issues. Both groups report a smooth transition to this exciting learning opportunity with very few problems. As the district’s goal for this program is to transform the learning process through the personalization of knowledge, we decided to visit SVHS and hear from some of the staff about our progress toward that goal. A visit to a science classroom showed students engaged in accessing their digital textbook and performing virtual labs on their laptops. Social studies teacher and Technology Integrator Kristin Buckmaster reported, “Teachers are finding innovative ways to deliver their material to the students and students seem to be more engaged.” We saw math classes using their laptops to access on-line tools to assist in problem-solving. English teacher and Technology Integrator Tara Young said, “In English classes, students are using Google Drive to share and collaborate on various writing assignments. Peer editing digitally has been beneficial to supporting students during the writing process. Students have also been reading and note-taking digitally and are transitioning well with their devices.” Kerry Smith, SVHS Media Information Specialist and Technology Integrator, tells us that students always have books with them! They have access to the district’s eBook collection, which includes over 600 eBooks. Students can search for books by genre, keyword, lexile range, subject, reading level, Reading Counts, and more. They can also highlight, make notes, and have some books read aloud to them. Many teachers reported they were able to apply the technology in new contexts. Students have responded exceedingly well to using laptops regularly in their classes; they reported frequent use of laptops to take notes, to research, and to organize materials. It appears that our initiative to transform instruction by using technology as a tool to enhance teaching and learning is succeeding. Assistant Principal, Amy Jenkins has been involved in this project from the very beginning. She reports that “1:1 has given our students and teachers an opportunity to explore and interact with the curriculum in more ways than we could imagine. We can now explore inside a cell, take a trip to China, speak to people in Spain, and the list goes on and on.”
