@ChMSTruckers
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I am proud to share that Churchland Middle School
is “fully” accredited for the 2019-2020 school year, based upon the data gathered during
the 2018-2019 school year by the Virginia Department of Education. I have placed the word
“fully” in quotation marks because officially the Virginia Department of Education has
changed accreditation ratings so that schools earn one of only three possible designations
now: Accredited, Accredited with Conditions, or Accreditation Denied. However, many of
us are accustomed to the old term for Accredited, which was “Fully Accredited”.
In the last four years, Churchland Middle has climbed from Accreditation Denied in 2015-
2016 to earning our new “full” accreditation by committing ourselves to our six core val-
ues: Collaboration, Commitment, Character, Academic achievement, Academic growth,
and a Positive, Safe Learning Environment. We summarize those values in what we call our
GPS, which stands for Give respect, Prioritize responsibilities, and Safety first. Our GPS in-
fuses all we do at Churchland Middle, and we encapsulate our commitment to our values in
our tagline – We are ChMS: My GPS for Success!
At Churchland Middle, we believe that we are here to ensure that every student who enters
our doors reaches his or her FULL potential. We believe in helping our students discover
the possibilities that their education and school involvement can provide in reaching their
goals, and in pushing them to reach heights they may never have envisioned for them-
selves.
We are so proud and honored that our families have entrusted the education of their chil-
dren to us at Churchland Middle, and we look forward to partnering with our families, stu-
dents, and community as we reach even greater heights during the 2019-2020 school year.
Please reach out to us early and often with your ideas, suggestions, and questions. We are
revving our engines for greater destinations in 2020.
Sincerely,
Barbara R. Kimzey, Ed.D.

Additional tests
The Science Team at Churchland Middle is excited to begin the 2019-20 School Year with
our Truckers!!! We have so many FUN things for our students to EXPLORE!!! This week we
will begin with a strong foundation making sure we get our interactive notebooks, Google
Classroom, Gizmos and JASON Learning accounts set up. In 7th and 8th grade classes, stu-
dents will participate in a lab on Thursday and take the pre-test on Friday. There’s no need to
study for the test as it is a tool to identify the specific needs of each student as we continue
throughout the year. Have a wonderful Labor Day, and we look forward to seeing our stu-
dents Tuesday!!!

Morning Arrival and Dismissal
Students may begin arriving at Churchland Middle
at 7:45 am. Early arrivals are not permitted to en-
sure the safety of our students. For those families
who drop-off students in the morning and/or pick
them up in the afternoon, please refer to the map
and follow the traffic pattern we have established. PRIVATE VEHICLES MAY NEVER ENTER THE
FRONT OR BACK BUS LOOPS AT ANY TIME.
Please always follow the direction of the crossing
guard stationed in the parking lot and other staff
who are there to assist you and ensure everyone’s
safety.
Our established traffic pattern ensures the safety of
all students and staff as they arrive and depart. We
understand that especially on the first day of
school and on rainy/very cold days, the drop-off
line may be long and wait times may increase.
PPS Cell Phone Policy
If a student chooses to bring a cell phone to school, the phone must be turned all the way off
and be placed out of sight at all times (i.e. in a
book bag, pocket, etc.). Students may not have a
phone out during the instructional day at any time.
Students may call home by asking for a pass from
their teacher and calling from our main office. In
addition, families may reach students at any time
by calling 686-2512, Option 0, and we will call the
student to talk to you on the phone in the main of-
fice.
If a student has a phone out during the day, an
adult will confiscate the phone and a
parent/guardian must come to the school during
business hours to retrieve the phone. Repeated
offenses will carry additional disciplinary conse-
quences, per the PPS Student Code of Conduct.
PPS Dress Code
We encourage our students to dress for success at
Churchland Middle. As a reminder, students must wear
shorts/skirts that are at least finger-tip length, must wear
clothing that covers the shoulders and cleavage (no tank
tops of any type), and must refrain from wearing any im-
ages or words that disrupt the learning environment or
would offend members of our school community. In ad-
dition, headwear is not permitted inside our building, so
students may not wear hoods, caps, or scarves. For com-
plete rules and policies, please refer to the PPS Student
Code of Conduct.
