Trust bounds onto the dance floor propelled by some pulsating synthesis.

Frank and the Mothers of Invention played three nights on December 8th, 9th & 10th and these shows formed the basis of the “Roxy & Elsewhere” album that was released in 1974. However the performances were also filmed in 16mm and this footage has been sitting in the Zappa vault ever since. It’s Great to be Alive!

Once upon a time my dream was to play in a Rock and Roll Band. Not just any Rock and Roll Band, but a very specific one. An idealized version of my teenaged rock fantasy with air guitars replaced by well-worn battle-axes and a devoted following that treated us like we were the greatest band on Earth. It’s the kind of lofty ideal that set the hearts all ablaze in millions of little boys my age back in the era when dinosaurs did indeed roam the Earth.

I met Mike Cooley thirty years ago this summer. He was the roommate of someone I knew in college who needed another roommate. I met Cooley the day I moved in. I noticed he had a guitar leaning against the corner. He noticed I had a rusty-stringed old guitar amongst my only possessions when I moved my stuff in. Our apartment was a hellish dump of mildew and moss and we were flat broke so we spent many an evening sitting around drinking cheap beer and playing songs we didn’t really know. Neither one of us was very good but we clicked.

On June 10, 1996, I talked Cooley into coming to play on a single I planned to record one afternoon and Drive-By Truckers was born. We’ve since played somewhere around 2,000 shows, made ten studio albums (so far), backed up Bettye Lavette and Booker T. Jones; and have had the adventures of several lifetimes. As we head into our twentieth year this year, I feel that in many ways we are just beginning.

Last fall, we ended our very successful year of touring behind our album “English Oceans” with a three-night stand at our favorite room in the world. The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco had always held a special place in our history and imaginations. We had long wanted to make a definitive live album and we decided that this was our chance.

As a band, we have always considered ourselves first and foremost a songwriter’s band and always said that “song is king” should be the basis of all artistic decisions. That said, we also built our reputation as a ‘Live’ band and as proud as I’ve always been of our records, we’ve also always been aware that there’s an element of our stage show that the records just cannot quite capture or parlay. 2014 turned out to be a sort of new peak in the life of this band. The latest lineup had really gelled into a powerful live act and the show had taken on some new levels musically and personally. We were ready to try to capture it into a live album.

Our long-time Producer, David Barbe, acquired the necessary mobile gear to record us and flew out to San Francisco to capture our three-night stand. We hired some horns, sold some tickets and played three special and unique shows. From those shows we have sequenced a sort of ultimate live DBT collection, one that hopefully captures the essence of our life’s work into one cohesive whole.

The deluxe boxset version will include 5 LPs, 3 CDs, a 16 page LP sized booklet plus 6 mini posters with art from longtime DTB illustrator Wes Freed. The standalone 3 CD set will include all 35 tracks plus a 24 page booklet. Additionally, there will also be a condensed, 13 track highlights edition titled “This Weekend’s The Night” available on 2 LPs. All formats will be in store October 30th.

This Weekend’s The Night!

It all started as an inside joke. That’s what bands do on the road to break up the monotony and rigors. They have inside jokes. Lots of them. The better bands begin to have so many inside jokes that they take on a sort of alternate language that only they understand. Inside jokes have played a particularly large part in our band’s story. Our most famous record began as an inside joke that we cultivated until it took on a life of its own, something to talk about for thousands of miles driving from one show to another. “Tonight’s The Night”. “Betamax Guillotine”. “The List”. “The Movie Version”. It goes on and on.

For years we were devoutly unsigned, playing hundreds of shows a year and often joking as we were about to go on stage in some dive bar in Ames, Iowa or Columbia, Missouri or Fort Worth, Texas that ‘Tonight we were going to get signed’. Just the ridiculousness of that statement would be enough to fuel a round of laughter and make the night a little better. Some years later, we actually did get signed after a show in Fort Worth. I guess be careful what you joke about.

“Tonight’s The Night”: in the early days it probably referred to some sort of debauchery but the expression lasted long after we had settled down from all of that. It definitely more to do with Neil Young than Rod Stewart but nonetheless a great way of signifying the importance of every single show, no matter where they might be. “Tonight’s The Night”. Every night is important. Every show should be played like it’s the most important show we’ll ever perform. Play it like we might get signed. Play it like we might die before morning. Play it like it’s the last show we’ll ever get to play. It just might be.

Life can be a fleeting thing, but a life well lived is one where each night is played for keeps. Played loud and with wild abandon. This Weekend’s The Night!

Named after the legend painted on Paul Weller’s amp, ‘Fire And Skill’ is a superb six disc boxed set – featuring six previously unreleased concerts, one from each year of The Jam’s major-label career.

Packaged in mini, lift-off lid box this set includes a separate hard-back book and individual gatefold wallets for the discs, as well as new essay, period photos and rare memorabilia. All audio has been remastered at Abbey Road.

Starting with an incendiary early gig at London’s famous 100 Club from 1977, the show featured took place 10 months after they first played the venue in November 1976, and was recorded for broadcast on American radio ahead of the trio’s inaugural visit to US in October 1977 for a six-date tour.

A Music Machine show from 1978, featuring most of the 2nd album – ‘This Is The Modern World’. The show was The Jam’s sixth live show of the year and one of four low-key shows in the capital to fanfare their new ‘News Of The World’ single under the banner ‘The London Blitz’.

Reading University, February 1979 - playing material from their breakthrough album ‘All Mod Cons’, was The Jam’s first live appearance of 1979, and found the band in a radically different place to their showcase at the Music Machine 12 months before. In that time, their third album, ‘All Mod Cons’, had been released to critical acclaim, and their status as one of the New Wave’s most musically substantial and exciting bands had been secured. And Weller was still only 20 years old...

Newcastle City Hall – October 1980, previewing songs from forthcoming album ‘Sound Affects’. In the time between The Jam’s show at Reading University on Disc 3 and their appearance at Newcastle City Hall 20 months later, there had been more extraordinary developments in the group’s world. ‘Setting Sons’, their fourth album, had given them a Top 3 hit with ‘The Eton Rifles’, which was followed in February 1980 with the stirring Number 1 single, ‘Going Underground’. After three years on Polydor, The Jam had finally become the biggest group in the UK.

London’s legendary Hammersmith Palais – December 1981, part of The Jam’s four consecutive nights, previewing material from the forthcoming final album ‘The Gift’. The shows taking the innovative form of a ‘60s soul revue, showcasing new acts including Bananarama, Department S and TV21.

One of the band’s final ever gigs at Wembley Arena - 1982. Late in 1982 The Jam announced they were splitting up - there would, though, be a final chance for fans to experience The Jam’s astonishing live shows, with a 14-date ‘farewell’ tour announced for late November and December. The centrepiece was a five-night stand at Wembley Arena, the 10,000-capacity shed next to the London football stadium (the recording here is from the second date), the biggest live venue in the capital.

UMe is proud to present a new batch of Back To Black reissues celebrating the catalogue of Elvis Costello. Elvis Costello is an English singer-songwriter. He began his career as part of London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s and later became associated with the first wave of the British punk and new wave movement of the mid-to-late 1970s. His critically acclaimed debut album, My Aim Is True, was recorded in 1977. Shortly after recording his first album he formed the Attractions as his backing band. His second album, This Year's Model, was released in 1978, and was ranked number 11 by Rolling Stone on its list of the best albums from 1967–1987. His first three albums all appeared on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Costello and the Attractions toured and recorded together for the better part of a decade, though differences between them caused a split by 1986. Much of Costello's work since has been as a solo artist, though reunions with members of the Attractions have been credited to the group over the years. Steeped in wordplay, the vocabulary of Costello's lyrics is broader than that of most popular songs Costello’s first autobiography is due to be released in October 2015, a memoir called Unfaithful Music and Disappearing Ink. These 12 titles are all studio albums released between 1977 and 1986, and include Taking Liberties – a compilation of mostly B-sides (77-80) which was previously only available in US and Canada.

THE CD: Since 2012, a series of mix-tapes has been used for the music classes. This particular recording, however, was performed and created by the BLACK YO)))GA Meditation Ensemble, an eclectic group of metallic hippies and doomlords, headed up by Kimee’s husband, Scott Massie. This ensemble has created a soundscape tailored to form a heavy meditation space and spread the benefits of yoga to people in their own art and music communities. It’s been the most spectacular of journeys, from a place in time when John Grant feared he’d never make music again or escape a life of addiction, to winning awards, accolades and Top 20 chart positions, and collaborating with Sinead O’Connor, Goldfrapp, Elton John and Hercules & Love Affair. Set in the final days of the Second World War, A TIME TO DIE tells the story of Michael Rogan, a young American revolutionary (Albert) who loses his wife and comrades in a Nazi raid on her village. After being left for dead by the cruel Colonel (Harrison) responsible for the massacre, Rogan goes on a quest for vengeance after the War is over, killing off his former German captors, one at a time. A TIME TO DIE features music composed by the great Ennio Morricone, here continuing a creative relationship with director Matt Cimber that included two other films, BUTTERFLY and HUNDRA. Born in Rome on November 10th, 1928 , Morricone studied at Rome 's Santa Cecilia Conservatory in his formative years, where he specialized in the trumpet and composition. Although his name will always be synonymous with the Spaghetti Western, Morricone has also contributed to a huge range of film genres, making him one of the film world's most versatile artists. He has written nearly 400 scores for films such as THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, BATTLE OF ALGIERS, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, THE MISSION, THE UNTOUCHABLES, BUGSY, CINEMA PARADISO, and many, many others, not to mention his legendary collaboration with Sergio Leone across six films. He has been nominated multiple times for Oscars and Golden Globes. He is the winner of several Golden Globes and finally received an honorary Oscar in 2007 for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music. THE TOUCH tells the story of a Chinese family of martial arts acrobats who are, in secret, the guardians of a holy treasure. Their ingrained acrobatic skills (their unique "touch") allow only them to access the hidden relic. When a ruthless treasure hunter (Roxburgh) kidnaps a member of the family in order to procure the object, the rest of the family, including the eldest daughter's American ex-boyfriend (Chaplin), pursues him in order to rescue their sibling and recover the treasure. Director Peter Pau was looking for a composer to write a large scale orchestral score for the film, along the lines of Jerry Goldsmith or John Williams. Editor Marshall Harvey was an acquaintance of composer Basil Poledouris and after showing him some footage from the climax of the film, the composer became interested in becoming part of the project. While the director wanted a large symphonic musical score, he also asked the composer to incorporate some ethnic instruments - the er-hu (Chinese two-string violin), pipa (Chinese lute), and xiao (an end-blown Chinese flute) - in order for the score to evoke the fictional legends that lay at the heart of the story. Basil Poledouris started taking piano lessons when he was 7 years old. Eventually, he went on to become a student at USC, where he studied directing, cinematography, editing, sound and music. In over two decades of scoring motion pictures, he has proven himself a master of melody and emotional power, forging rewarding creative relationships with directors such as Paul Verhoeven, John Milius, Randal Kleiser, Simon Wincer and John Waters. Basil has composed music for films such as BIG WEDNESDAY, THE BLUE LAGOON, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, RED DAWN, ROBOCOP, FLESH AND BLOOD, QUIGLEY DOWN UNDER, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, and STARSHIP TROOPERS.

Guitarist Ben Monder first recorded for ECM as a member of the Paul Motian Band on “Garden of Eden” in 2004, and Amorphae was originally conceived as a series of duets for Ben and Paul. A first exploratory duo session was recorded in 2010. After Motian’s death the following year it was decided to expand and complete the project with another highly influential and innovative drummer, Andrew Cyrille, adding also Pete Rende on synthesizer on two pieces. So here we hear Monder solo, in duo with Motian, in duo with Cyrille, and in trio with Cyrille and Rende. This range of expressive options casts light upon Monder’s musical concepts and their adaptability. A guitarist’s guitarist, Monder’s also a master of texture and unusual voicings, creating what one reviewer has called “detailed sonic landscapes of mystery and power”. A document of a 2012 Japanese solo recital – not only the last in his homeland but the last anywhere - by idiosyncratic improviser Masabumi Kikuchi (1939-2015). One of the uncategorisable greats, Kikuchi occupied his own musical universe and in his final years was quietly and systematically severing his ties to jazz, drifting instead towards what he called ‘floating sound and harmonies’ , introspective and poetic improvisations. Song forms still sometimes materialized. Kikuchi revisits “Little Abi” , a ballad for his daughter, which the pianist once recorded with Elvin Jones. And there is a surprising and very touching version of the wistfully yearning theme from the 1959 Brazilian film Black Orpheus.

Guitarist Lionel Loueke chose to record GAÏA—his remarkable rock-infused fourth Blue Note album—live in the studio with an intimate audience in attendance. The purpose was to achieve a raw energy and reach a musical essence, and to that end he reunited with the two musicians who accompanied him on his 2008 Blue Note debut Karibu—bassist Massimo Biolcati and drummer Ferenc Nemeth—a simpatico trio that first formed when the three attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston together in the late 1990s.

“I always wanted to record this trio live” says Loueke of the sessions, which were captured at Sear Sound in New York City. “We were all in the same room with a small audience, no headphones, no isolation and no overdubs of course. It has a real live feel. It was a very special event.”

Loueke's compositional mastery is evident in the construction of the 11 original songs presented here and the trio's performances are extraordinary. “I don't think we sound like any other trio on the scene today" says an understated Loueke.

“I have been writing for this trio for a long time. They can handle every metrical challenge in my songs. There is an inside communication between the three of us.”
