“God bless America, Land that I love. Stand beside her,

and guide her through the night with a light from

above.”

God Bless America, that great patriotic tune, was originally composed by

the great Irving Berlin in 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army at Camp

Upton in Yaphank, New York. The lyrics to the song took several chang-

es in its first couple of decades of existence, most notably, it was original-

ly written as a victory song which included the lyrics, “Make her victori-

ous on land and foam...” as well as, “Stand beside her and guide her, to the

right with a light from above.”

When Hitler came to power in Germany in 1938, Irving Berlin – who was

a first-generation European immigrant and Jewish-American (born Israel

Baline) – re-worked the song into what he felt was a much needed peace

song. The lines, “Make her victorious on land and foam” was taken out

and the line “to the right” was replaced with the line, “through the night”

so as not to be taken as a political suggestive – though politics was not

what he had in mind with that line. Furthermore, Berlin added that beauti-

ful, not quite as well known introductory line which was the final piece in

completely transforming the piece from a song of victory to a song of

prayer, “While the storm clouds gather/ far across the sea/ let us swear al-

legiance/ to a land that’s free,/ let us all be grateful/ for a land so fair/ as

we raise our voices/ in a solemn prayer.”

This updated version of God Bless America made its first public appear-

ance on Armistice Day (today better known as Veteran’s Day) 1938. The

song was such a big hit and became so popular that it even made a bid at

replacing The Star Spangled Banner as the national anthem.

Throughout the generations, God has indeed blessed our fair country. He

has raised up many a selfless men and women to defend not only the free-

doms we enjoy in our own country but to defend those same, ‘self-evident’

freedoms so that others may enjoy them in their countries as well. He has

raised up many a godly people to fear and love Him, to teach His holy

word to their children and their children’s children. He has made us a gen-

erous nation always ready to reach out and help our neighbors – both for-

eign and domestic – in times of great need.

Throughout the course of Holy Scripture, we see God’s faithfulness in an-

Easton Y’s Men Sell Fireworks

To Send Kids To Camp!

There is a wonderful campsite owned by the

YMCA in the Sequoia National Forrest. Children

and adults have enjoyed the facility for many

years. It is a non-profit campground supported by

groups like the Easton Y’s Men. They hold fund

raisers and work days and keep the campground

clean and functional for our children to enjoy the

benefits of the beauty of nature.

They raise funds for camp scholarships by selling fireworks every year.

Please remember their fund raiser this year starting on July 1st. Their

stand is across the street for Immanuel in the park. They sell beautiful fire-

works!!!

Immanuel is

happy to

introduce:

Women’s Ministries

All women are invited to our summer salad potluck on Thursday July

31st at 6:30 P.M. in the social hall. Come and cool off and enjoy great

food and fellowship around the table. Marcia Hollenbeck will lead us in

a Bible study on Mary’s song of praise after supper. Our August gather-

ing will take place on Thursday August 28th and will be led by Betty

Moore.

Don’t forget!!! July 1st is the deadline for registration for the fall retreat

being held September 26-28 at St. Anthony’s Retreat Center in Three

Rivers. News anchorwoman Liz Harrison is the guest speaker. Registra-

tion forms are available in the church entry. A deposit of $95 is due with

the registration with the balance due at the time of retreat. St. Anthony’s

is a peaceful place to rest, relax, and be refreshed. Glenn Nielsen contin-

ues to collect aluminum cans for our scholarship fund. Please contact

him if you have cans to contribute.

The Thursday morning weekly Bible study continues to meet during the

summer. The group is beginning a new book Having a Mary Spirit: Al-

lowing God to Change us From the Inside Out this month. If you are in

need of a soul-deep makeover, author Joanna Weaver will lead you on a

spiritual journey that will help you begin the process of deepening your

relationship with Christ. Her down-to-earth style is easy to read and yet

challenging. The group meets in the church library at 10:00 A.M. on

Thursdays.

Family Camp

Immanuel campers are heading out this month.

There is plenty of room, pack up and go camping!

The campsite is available on Wednesday July 23 and

we check out on Sunday July 27th at Loggers Flat

Group Campground in the Sequoia National Forrest. Please sign up on

the bulletin board in the church entryway if you are planning on at-

tending so that we know when to expect you. Everyone is welcome,

it’ s not too late and it is a wonderful way to build friendships. If you

would like more information about the campsite log on to the website at:

www.recreation.gov and search for Logger Flat Group Sequoia National

Forrest. It’s always tricky to reserve the space for the fol-

lowing year. If you are interested in helping with that task

please call Victoria in the church office at 237-7909.

MARIE JOHANSEN’S family has a lot to celebrate in 2014. Kevin and Deb-

bie Johansen and Sharon and John Reynolds celebrated their 25th wedding

anniversaries in February and April. Twenty-eight immediate family mem-

bers honored them at a dinner on May 18th at the Ramada Inn. Dinner was

hosted by Marie Johansen. Other milestones this year, Sharon and John have

a grandson and granddaughter who each turned 18 and graduated from high

school. Brandon Johansen turns 21 in July and Aaron was 30 in April and

Meghan will be 30 in September. The celebration at the Ramada Inn was fun

and the food was delicious and everyone had a good time but the three two

year olds, Kendal, Micah and Mckenzie, stole the show.

Thank You

Thank you for all of your prayers, I am on the road to recovery which

will be a long slow process. I prefer speedy.

Thanks again

Juanita Pasma

We at Lord of Life Lutheran want very much to thank you and mem-

bers of your congregation for supporting our Restore Garage Sale on

May 17th. Your participation was especially meaningful to us and to

Habitat for Humanity. It’s wonderful to see the Central Valley Lu-

theran congregations come together for such a worthy cause. Togeth-

er you donated a total of $6150 worth of merchandise which we used

to generate $3283 in sales. The remainder was turned over to Habitat

for them to sell in the future. When combined with the grant from

Thrivent we estimate that we will contribute a total of $4604 to Habi-

tat for Humanity and their efforts to provide housing for needy fami-

lies in our county. The next Habitat building project is scheduled for

Orange Cove. Congratulations and THANK YOU!!!”

The following congregations contributed: Lord of Life, Trinity, Im-

manuel in Easton, St Paul in Selma, Christ in Reedley, Concordia,

Bethel, and Our Savior.

AARP Driver Safety Course

A unique driver refresher course for drivers aged 50 and over is being of-

fered at Immanuel Lutheran Church on July 16 & 17, 2014 from 9:00AM-

1:00PM. (Both days are required). Younger family members are allowed

to take the course with you, if they also sign up.

CA law requires car insurance companies to give a discount to each driver

age 55 or over who completes this course and has a clean driving record.

(Some insurance companies start the discount at age 50) The completion

certificate and discount lasts for three years.

The course takes 8 hours of classroom instruction, in two days. The cost is

twenty dollars ($20) per person ($15 for AARP members). The class in-

cludes all course materials (bring your driver’s license, checkbook, AARP

membership number, and a writing pen).

To reserve a seat in class, sign up on the bulletin board in the church entry-

way or call the church office at 237-7909. The first twenty five people to

sign up and pay for the class will be admitted. The checks should be made

payable to AARP. If paying by cash place the money into an envelope

with your name on it.
