No Regrets: The Basics of Performing Is your child a triple threat? Would they like the opportunity to become one? Look no further. No Regrets is a performance based group that will focus on dancing and singing numbers. Even if the student isn’t the strongest vocalist or dancer, there is a place they belong. You will have the opportunity to learn jazz, character, hip-hop, modern, elements of lyrical and tap dancing styles. There will be large group numbers as well as smaller ensembles. My approach to dance is to teach as many styles of dance as I can as well as to blend styles to make the students more versatile performers. This is a great way for your child or self to gain self-confidence and have fun while doing so. By the end of the season you will have learned enough routines to perform the show. Intermediate Digital Photography This offering picks up where the Beginning class leaves off. In this class students will go beyond the basic understanding and workings of pointing and shooting a digital camera (single-lens reflex, “dSLR,” models preferred). Using classroom discussions and working with the camera in the varied locations around the Grand Theatre, students will explore.

Instructor: Richard Beebe Location: Visual Arts 1 Note: Students will need to bring their own camera with adjustable controls (no cell phone cameras), the camera manual, and film rolls or media cards.

Advanced Digital Photography This offering will be driven by students’ specific questions and issues with where they are with their photography. The issues may hinge of technical aspects, or difficulty getting a grasp of something with lighting. There might be “aesthetics” issues in getting a photo to better tell a story, or involve different styles – landscapes, portraits, nature, documentary, etc. This will be a hands-on focused 4-weeks session, working on your questions you most want to tackle.

Instructor: Richard BeebeLocation: Musco Music RoomNote: Students need to have ownership of a familiarity with a “dSLR” camera (no cell-phone or point-and-shoot cameras); past enrollment in one of the Beginning and/or Intermediate Photography classes offered at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

Capture a Moment on Camera: Beginning Digital PhotographyThis class will explore the creative controls on the modern digital camera. Involving both classroom instruction and time out exploring the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts, we will learn some of the basic concepts of working with an adjustable camera including f-stops, shutter speeds, “ISO” speed, lens’ focus and focal length. Class meets once a week for 4 weeks.

Instructor: Richard Beebe Location: Visual Arts 1Note: Students will need to bring their own camera with adjustable controls (no cell phone cameras), the camera manual, and film rolls or media cards; past enrollment in one of the Beginning and/or Intermediate Photography classes offered at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts.

CAMPS

This Summer the Grand is proud to introduce a NEW Theatre camp experience. Directed by the Performing Arts Program Manager with the professional staff of the Grand, theatre teachers and professionals from around the area. We will have the expertise to provide a safe educationally dynamic and engaging environment. There will be two sessions; one for youth and one for teens. For more information or complete curriculum and schedule, please visit www.atthegrand.org/camp.

Youth CampThis three-week youth camp is designed to inspire confidence and creativity in young theatre enthusiasts while encouraging the exploration and development of both skill and interest. Students will start each day with warm-ups and theatre games, followed by short skits presented by fellow campers and staff that relate to the previous or current day’s lessons. Students will then work on acting skills, focusing on establishing the “building blocks” of acting and creating characters.

After a lunch break, students will have supervised recreational time before heading into the art studios. Students will explore artistic interpretation and create theatre related projects such as props, masks and puppets. On alternating days, campers will participate in singing or dance movement. A curriculum-related movie will be shown on the big screen on Fridays.

Before the end of the day, campers will break into groups and work with staff members on skits and acting exercises that explore the lessons of the day. During the last week, campers will take what they have learned and create an invitational showcase for friends and family and perform on the evening of the last Friday.

Teen CampThe four-week teen camp has an curriculum designed to build on the campers’ current interest and experience level. The morning will start with warm-ups, theatre games and improv exercises. Afterwards a they will have a guest speaker or workshop in general topics like audition techniques, performance art, analyzing scripts, staging, stage makeup and more.

Lunch will be followed by supervised free time where campers can work on current projects. Unlike the youth camp, the rest of the day will be broken into a selection of “electives” that allow campers to focus on the areas in which they are most interested. These areas will include advanced acting techniques, stage movement and dance, stage combat, sound and lighting design, stage management, directing, and musical theatre.

This camp will include two Friday night showcases (halfway and final) for campers to show off their completed projects to family and friends. This camp will also include a field trip into San Francisco on a Wednesday to tour a theatre and see an afternoon performance of “Les Miserables”.

Pastel Drawing WorkshopCulinary Mischief Our domestic critters are up to no good in this three-day pastel workshop! We’ll use pastels to create amazing, “can’t believe-I-drew-this” masterpieces. Day 1, we draw a pattern-rich, poster-sized ice cream cone, triumphantly carried by a troop of ants. On Day 2, we catch (and draw) mice in the act of making the soup, and on Day 3, we discover a spaghetti thief in our very own drawing! Pastels are an amazing medium-that with good direction can make an artist out of any rookie. You won’t believe the results from this fun-for-all, skill-enhancing workshop.
