NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE for SUMMER CAMPThe Friends Foundation has been providing the funds to send deserving young students to the Arts, Adventures & Academics (AAA) summer program for the past six years. This fi ve-week enrichment program provides children from kindergarten through their middle school years a unique opportunity for exploration, creativity and hands-on learning during the summer months.
Did you know? For over 25 years, AAA has provided a comfortable, supportive environment where young people can inspire one another, where collaboration, experimentation and self-expression are encouraged, and where lifelong friendships are made. “Our Planet: Keeping It Clean and
Healthy” is the inspiration for this year’s summer camp, held at Walnut Creek Intermediate School from June 20th through July 22nd. Check out: www.arts-ed.org and go to Arts, Academics and Adventures for all the details.
The scholarship program is entirely dependent upon the fundraising efforts of the Friends of Civic Arts Education Foundation. Through your generous donations, as many as 25 children from fi nancially disadvantaged homes might be able to experience this wonderful program with full or partial scholarships. We could use your help. A contribution in the amount of $475 will sponsor one deserving child; however, any gift will be truly appreciated. Please consider a tax deductible donation today. Makeyour check payable to the Friends of CAE Foundation and send to The Friends Foundation, 111 N. Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, 94598. More information on the nonprofi t 501 (c) (3) foundation is available by going to www.friendsartsed.org

JUNE BOWENInterviewed by Mary Leigh Miller
June Bowen joined the Friends Foundation Board in 2007. An active Clay Arts Guild member since the early 2000s (she served on the board as its treasurer for two years), June is known for her whimsical, colorful sculptures, which are often assembled and sometimes have moveable parts. She also loves oil painting and recently returned from a one-week trip to Costa Rica, led by a CAE instructor Jody Mattison, where the group found inspiration along the beaches.
Her fi rst career was teaching fi rst graders in Fort Lauderdale Florida, probably explaining, June told me, her love of creating child-like sculptures, such as the jack-in-a-box you see in the photo. I asked her how she found her way to California. “I had never been this far west,” she said, which led her to SF State where she earned a Masters in Education. Upon graduation, June – along with many other teachers – faced a hiring freeze in the CA school system, the aftermath of the passage of Prop 13. “I had fallen in love with California,” she confessed, “so I went looking for a second career and ended up in the fi eld of Employee Benefi ts. June retired in 2002 as an Assistant VP and Employee Benefi ts Manager at Robertson Stevens, an investment banking fi rm. Another big accomplishment in California: meeting the man who would become her husband shortly after moving out here. June and Bill have no children but own a little Shih Tzu, Coco, whom they adore.
“I love to see the eyes of little children light up when they are exposed to the arts,” she told me. “I guess I’m the same way!”
